  • Out on the road with "The Guthrie Family Rides Again" tour, we were asked to record "Deportees" for Mary's Memorial service, November 9th, Monday night. Abe and I mixed and edited the song last night. We were at it until four this
morning. We sent it off and Jacquie said, "It made her cry." I thought I would share this on You Tube!
RIP Mary Travors, we love you!
    Abe Guthrie vocals keyboards
    Krishna Guthrie (Abe's son) guitar
    Annie Guthrie vocals
    Cathy Guthrie vocals
    Sarah Lee Guthrie vocals guitar
Johnny Irion (Sarah Lee's husband) vocals guitar
Terry al la Berry (Guthrie) drums (we adopted him)
Filmed and produced by Jackie Guthrie
We just received a wonderful note from Peter Yarrow to Arlo,
ARLO'S WONDERFUL VIDEO FOR MARY'S MEMORIAL CELEBRATION:
    Dear Arlo,
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this effort on your part. It's so
very moving, and even though it's not inherently a "tearjerker" it brings
the kinds of tears to the eyes that ennoble the struggle, as well as Mary's
    life.
Your having done this for her, Arlo, our friend, means more than I can say.
Love goes out to you in so many, many ways. In this time when in as sense
"the bottom line" is being shared, your own voice will touch the hearts of
    those attending.
Please thank your family as well for us. We're grateful in full measure.
    Love,
    Your brother, Peter

Put 75 years in. Heard a lot of singers. Arlo is the only one who left me feeling I'd been entertained by a friend who knew how to play the soul cords being strummed in my own heart as each of us (similar ages) as our lives unfolded.

arlo i love the thought of being a ranger. if you are in a tower you get to look for peace in the valley. you an yodel and wait for.echo to return. you will have time to sing billy joel royal song we didn't start the fire but first you have report to the appropriate fire fighting first responds then you have to be safe in Johnny cash's ring of fire. if you are on a trail line you might catch a ride on the wabash cannonball. or a train to the city of new orleans or you can smoke a joint until you can sing johnny denver s song of rocky mountain high with mama cass eliot or was that i leaving on a jet plane or pinkard and bowdens parody im lebanon on a jet plane.
arlo thanks for the memories. according to the briggs meyer test i should have been a lone woofer and one job was a forest ranger it it was a suggestion for at least the 5 times i took briggs meyers test. i was mainframe cobol dinosaur
maybe i could be a glen campbell rhinestone cowboy or toby Keith's should've beena a cowperson or may take the briggs meyer test suggestion i already have a 50 acre pasture that grew up to a 74 acre wood lot. would it grow larger if i were a forester another lone strange. oh well only in america. it suspect that it is 65 acres but will be taxed at 75 acres because the tax accessors need to gain 10 acres some where they gave to an out of state flat lander. my foiled them by enrolling it in the land use program which would offset the taxes. and thick type town has to pick up the difference because the state cannot pay the taxes. i gave the town a chance to reduce my acres to reduce the tax burden to the town but they prefer i keep 10 acres of fake property. a new meaning to the song for this is my land this your land. now it my turn to own 10 acres of invisible. only in america yakoff smirkoff said it best

The first time I heard "Deportee" was on the Bound For Glory soundtrack. But the first time I realized I could find out who wrote a song so that I would always have that song, even without the songbook, I could find another copy somewhere, was when I read in my second grade music book, "This Land is Your Land," written by Woody Guthrie. Woody has never been far from my life since.

Hi, Len. This Arlo clip touches me. What a tribute to Mary! I think of the braceros I knew who were made to live in dugouts on a foetid creek in northern San Diego County, with 1930s-style gun-thugs running interference for the ranchers--and that was in the 1980s! Fortunately, Alex Cockburn and Tom Hayden put a stop to that practice.

It's a shame that 76 years later this song is still so relevant.

The more things change.....the more thy remain the same..... Thank you, Arlo......Perhaps someone should send a copy of this to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Why? The occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave whom this song was aimed at on Nov 7, 2009
when this was recorded doesn't live there anymore. He cashed in, street hustler that he was, and now has several multimillion-dollar mansions, gated and secure to hide out in. Maybe you can copy this video to a florescent thumb-drive and sling-shot it over the fences if his Secret Service detail doesn't shoot you first. I'm sure he wouldn't mind being disturbed by a little folk who helped make him a fat-cat.

I found this video to be incredibly moving...as is always the case when music, love and family unite for an emotional cause. Here tribute is given to the sacrifices of the "deportees" as well as the lives of the strong, beautiful people (including Mary) who gave those deportees a voice. What a treasure you have given us by sharing it with us here. Thank you.

This particular song holds some fond memories for me! 'Twas a Thursday evening in Murray's Top-Shop in Lusk, County Dublin when my old friend Dick Delaney (RIP), Denis Murray, Eamon Carroll and I "brought- the- house- down" with a rendition of Deportees. The late Dick with his white guitar, took the lead with the rest of us providing harmony and extra guitar support. Ah... Dem was the days!

Mary was born in Louisville, KY (my hometown), and moved to New York when she was two. Unfortunately, most people in Louisville are unaware of her Louisville roots. Hopefully, there can be a statue/memorial to pay respect for her talent.
