"Now we dolly back" "Now we fade to black" I can't think of another group that could evoke visuals like Steely Dan. This puts me in mind of a 50s film noir.
That "dominant sound" was the talk box guitar. The guitar was played by Dean Parks with Walter Becker recording the talk box effect over the original recording. This method had been around for a while and was very prominent on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way," Peter Frampton's live album and Jon Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer."
Haiti is famous for its “same day-no fault” divorce which I believe is why she (Babs) went there to get but after some drinks and a fling she doesn’t go through with it and returns to Clean Willie but after time passes she ends up giving birth to “Charlie’s” Semi-Mojo(half black, Kinky haired so and so)baby and they’re back where they started only this time it is Willie who files. I love that you listen all the way through without interrupting the song and wait until the end to give your reaction.
Another great song from another great album...one of my favorite Dan albums. The Royal Scam has "Kid Charlemagne," "Don't Take Me Alive," "Green Earrings" and "Everything You Did." This album proved to me that everything Steely Dan did was magical and so very original...and no genre was safe from their creativity.
They called what she did her "Haitian divorce" because at the time, just one married person could go to Haiti and receive an official divorce, even without the other persons knowledge.
8:32.. She went down a bar in Haiti and met herself a six-foot black island man..."Tearful reunion in the USA"" --She came back home to hubby and they make up, But oops--She's preggers from the one night stand and has his baby. Which means they're getting a divorce for sure now (Unless hubby's a really good sport) So it really was a Haitian Divorce!!
One of my all time favorite bands. I am so old I remember when that album came out. Me and my friends wore it out on the turntable!!! Thanks for this. :-)
You only got half of the story. Yes indeed they have a horrible wedding night brawl, she gets drunk, heads off to a club and bonks some local guy. Then she goes back to the US has a " tearful reunion" with her husband, they smooth it out but..uh oh she has a baby...and it don't look like her husband " who's this kinky so and so " By the way " Papa" refers to Papa Doc the dictator of Haiti at that time.
Nice reaction Angela to a terrific Steely Dan tune! The sound you were inquiring about is a guitar that is running through a sound effects device called a Talk Box, probably the most famous example of which was Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like I Do" on his 1976 Frampton Comes Alive double album. The Talk Box is not an easy device to master. Hope you feel better soon -- Happy Valentine's Day!
Can't go wrong with the Dan. Talk box: There's a plastic tube involved that you put in your mouth, the other side connected to a loudspeaker system connected to the guitar, and you shape your mouth in certain ways to get the effect. Love that sound.
Hey Steve great job picking one of my favorite Steely Dan songs. Angela 🥰 I’m so glad you’re feeling better that was some very nice chair dancing. 🔥😍🙏🏽✌🏽♥️
Thanks Mauricio! Cool fact about Haitian Divorce… Dean Parks was as surprised as everyone else when he heard Walter’s talk box studio rework of his solo. And not too happy about it, either. But it’s a classic!
@@mjm5081 I can't even pick which song from The Royal Scam is my favorite, let alone which Steely Dan album is my favorite... I can never make up my mind, LOL. The other day I was listening to Aja and amazed (again) how good I Got the News sounded (especially the drums)... and I Got the News is supposedly the weakest song on the album! I think it's time to recommend Green Earrings...
@@catherder78 Yes, Green Earrings!!! I Got the News is amazing! No bad songs on Aja. In fact, of the first 7 albums, I don't think there's a song I don't like. The later albums are good, but not quite to the level of the earlier stuff.
I don’t think the breakup took place immediately but surely within a year after the wedding. So she goes to Haiti to get the divorce. But after that she comes home to the US and wants to reconcile with hubby. Eventually she has a baby but as it matures it becomes evident that the kid is not his but rather the result of her visit to Haiti.
New to me again! They were a very innovative band with a blend of many unique sounds! That talk box guitar I believe was made mega popular by Peter Frampton in his Frampton Comes Alive LP! Goodbye and all the best to everyone!
Yeah it's called a talkbox you play the guitar and the sound goes through a plastic tube in your mouth or the players mouth and you manipulate your mouth to make those Wawa sounds it's pretty cool Peter Frampton used it in one of his songs
Steely Dan always told unique stories in their lyrics and set them to beautifully produced music. You picked a smart one, Angela. Glad to hear you sounding better and your dancing is lovely as ever! ;) x Keep up the good work!

I know what you mean… I like to think of Steely Dan as filmmakers who make movies that are short and have no visuals 🤔
One of my fav SD songs . There are no bad SD songs lol

It looked like Frampton was using the talk box in the live recording. So they still needed to do another track with the talk box?

These dudes were brilliant. The minor to major switch after the first 'chorus'. They kept you on your toes,
Awesome!

when she smiled, she said it all..

Great song from a great band, their albums are classics
Great music never ages, love this every bit as much as when I bought the single back in 1976,sheer genius!

Such a great song. Steely Dan is the absolute best ever!

And the caper. She gets a “Haitian Divorce” from her own unexpected baby as well. Steely Dan’s perverse sense of humor on full display.

I grew up on this band. Can't believe u reacted to it. You have taste

Musical geniuses!
Classy funky jazzy tune the 70s was so good!
I came to watch Angela dance. I also have this album which helps.
Another great one is "Everyone's gone to the movies". It has one very creepy back story!
lol, doesn’t it just
Talk box.. voice bag. First recorded by the master Jeff Beck. On 2 LPs. Then Frampton and Joe Walsh.
Whoever your valentine is, is lucky!

Not love lost, love found in Haiti! Just took nine months for it to show up! Lol!
That's coincidental but.. *Medicine Head* is an actual rock band.. 😁
happoy valentines day, angela
Cut to the best part of Angela’s reaction 6:30 👁👁♥️
Royal Scam music.... Very nice...
If you like Steely Dan (great band!), i have a sense you'd like some of Gino Vannelli's songs. "People Gotta Move" is a good starting point.
Dean !
Try LOVE STINKS BY J GIELS😎😉🤟😁
Please can you react to Madonna - Oh father 😊
