As part of Lotti’s Credo in F major which starts off with four parts and string & continuo accompaniment, Crucifixus a 8 is the only piece with 8 voice parts and is accompanied only by the continuo. Describing Christ’s crucifixion and death, many composers often frame the text in a musical descension - but Lotti’s take on the text from the Nicene Creed stands out as he instead chooses to build and stack from the low voices up to the highest. He composed this particular piece in Dresden as its court composer and it is known today to be one of his greatest works.
Crucifixus etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato:
Passus, et sepultus est.
