From the Romantic period, Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditse Devo is part of his “All-Night Vigil” which was composed in 1915. It consists of fifteen movements and is based on the texts of the Russian Orthodox All-Night Vigil service, which is a set of prayers and hymns traditionally performed in the evening and night before major religious feast days. The title of the piece is a phrase in the Church Slavonic language, which translates to “Rejoice, O Virgin” in English. The text encapsulates the Church Slavonic’s deep spirituality and faith in the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrating her role as the mother of Christ.
Bogoróditse Dyévo, ráduisya,
Blagodátnaya Maríye, Gospód s tobóyu.
Blagoslovyéna ty v zhenákh,
i blagoslovyén plod chryéva tvoyevó,
yáko Spása rodilá yesí dush náshikh.
Rejoice, virgin mother of God,
Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb,
for you have borne the Savior of our souls.
