Thanks bud. This should let me finally paint my Tyranid army. I intended to do the black, grey and white then colour but I had no real plan to how. Never thought of dry brushing the grey and white on, so this will save me tons of time, thanks!

Thank you for these videos. You are the ONE person who sold me on the Slap Chop method. Before that, I just shrugged it off as some corny, gimmicky way to paint something with crappy results. After a few of your videos I bought the Speed Paint Mega Set and have just been PLOWING through hordes of Zombicide Undead Or Alive zombies with fantastic results. Thing with 'slap chop' is that it's just under painting, but it's been delivered in a format that's digestible and easy to remember. Without the other artistic theories, colour theory, light values etc, it can come off looking crappy as you say. MH applied the additional theories, even if its wasn't conscious. Hence the minotaur looks great lol
I developed this method on my own by experimenting with painting and have to say it's the most time efficient method providing impressive result I have seen yet. I won a small speedpainting competition with this method as well :D Glad other pewople can discover this method and enjoy it as well!

Great video showing non GW minis. Keep them videos on slap chop coming. I like that you actually show the process compared to other videos where they all just comment on slapchop and try to "improve" it.

I did the slapchop on my Pink Horrors but instead of grey and white I used a darker pink purple color and I think it looked way nicer then using grey and white
I use this method as well, and am also not good at non metallic metals. I did a group of heavy armored swordsmen and found, during the slap-chop drybrushing stage, swapping grey for Steel grey, and white for my whitest silver on the metal parts (and normal slap-chop on the cloth, and pouches) Worked great. If you are not doing steel/iron armor, you can do this with two other metallic paints and it should work well (i've done it with gold\brighter gold as well). The steel/iron can also be tinted with inks/speed paints and the metallic effect and shadows/highlights will still be visible
I do something similar, but for the metals I don't dry brush initially. What I do is leave it black and then dry brush a metallic paint over the black surface, it will give a nice kind of burnished worn out look. I can share some examples if you want
Use artists white gesso for the dry brush - the chalky teksture makes the details pop up way more , also its just easier to dry brush with it, you can even skip the grey paint step
For metallics, if you get a metallic dry paint (like a citadel necromancy compound) you can use grey/yellow/brown contrast/speed paints for multiple metallic effects. Might be worth to add to the slap chop pallet?
for yellow I recommend Imperial Fist contrast paint from Citadel. when you are in the market to buy more paint. Love your videos. The slap chop method has converted me as well. I use to HATE painting. But now I enjoy it with this method.
Since you mentioned not having a good yellow, if you use cadmium yellow ink over a white base, it looks amazing. I find that Liquitex makes great inks, but your mileage may vary.

I like the fact you are not trying to show off the painting method, and it's just your style of painting now, no buzz, just a dude enjoying the results of his work. And it really is a fantastic paint job. I'm painting some Adepta sororiats and wondering how to incorporate this paint style with those models

I love using this method myself. I just started painting a couple months ago. haven't even tried the "traditional" route because of how pleased I am with shading first then slapping on some contrast/speed paints. The biggest thing I have to worry about is just making sure the direction that I drybrush grey/white is the opposite direction of creases and crevices, for example if there is a bunch of vertical creases in an armor piece or clothing piece, I will dry brush at a bit of an angle horizontally. this may not be the most "realistic" method when it comes to lightning, but it normally gives the model really good contrast and light/dark areas that don't simply get filled on the low points with the grey/white primer creating better contrast. Next step is just like a coloring book, don't paint outside the lines, and tadah done. Varnish if you'd like. The minotaur looks great btw!

You can avoid those "levels/leveling" you see on the tip of Axe at 9:09 for example by just adjusting Antialiasing/ Grey Offset to like 70% to get a smoother finish. I´m using "Lychee Slicer" which is pretty easy to work with!! Looking forward to see more! Greetings from germany!
This is how I have been painting my wulfen, my first batch I used a black undercoat and honestly it was maybe too dark. The second batch I used a dark to mid brown under the dry brushing and the skeleton hoarde used for the skin looks AMAZING.
ive been using for a long time the slap chop technique with vallejo game inks before speed paints appear, they work great too, as long as u are a bit carefull with the amount u use. try them some day. nowdays i paint some parts with inks, some with speedpaints and i have a few gw contrasts too.

I've been wanting to try the Slap Chop method for a bit now, but just haven't gotten around to it. I ordered a few Knucklebone miniatures for Forbidden Psalm: The Last War, so maybe I'll give it a shot with one or two of them.
Yeah, was just saying that I might have quit out of frustration if I hadn't seen this method. I recently painted 10 plaguebearers and I appreciated these more than anything I ever made. Instead of quitting I just bought more minis.

Oooh, if you like quick and easy ways of doing it. Its a bit easier then this and gets a smoother finish that you might like. Prime it white, and then do a watered down wash of black/grime. Save you the drybrushing time, gets you the same starting point for oyur speed paints.
Looks great! Since you mentioned struggling with the bone and yellow contrast/speed paints, might I suggest that it's due to the slapchop method leaving so much dark grey and black on the model, so especially bright contrast/speed paints don't have enough white underneath to show up as their intended color. If you add a lot more white in the drybrushing step to the areas you want to use bone/yellow on, you may be able to achieve better results with them. Just a thought. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see more! :)
you could try a sliver ink for your metallics not sure how well it'll work with slap chop but it could be a solution as contrast paints are basically pre thinned inks
@@MiniatureHobbyist Daler Rowney System 3 silver is a good start, Midwinter mini's used it on some Tzeentch models when just using inks. You can either contrast over it to tint, or add drops of colour into the silver to get a nice coloured metal. A lot of places like Hobbycraft will stock it to boot. Otherwise I'm a big fan of my old trusty Vallejo Air Black Metallic (a lovely dark metal shade) and Tinny Tin (a replacement for the old rusty metal Tinbitz from GW 90's era)
Great paintjob mate, well done! I've painted some ogres witht the same method and they look awesome - especially for the (low) effort. They were a treat to paint.

I like to experiment, so may armies are done in one style for the whole army, but different between them. So i just finished my Ogors army for AoS and used the slap chop style, really liked it for those guys. But for my LotR i do a more stylised paint scheme, and for my Ironjawz for AoS i did a really grungy and rusty look. So my painting happy is different, but then if i don’t like the final result i mostly just sell the army on and try something new 😊
Don't throw away models. Sit them overnight in some pure Dettol and the paint comes right off with a toothbrush. Then rinse them off in some slightly warm water. Don't use the water before you've scrubbed them, it just turns to a muck and you'll have to soak them again. ✌
It's even easier and faster to put the zenithal undercoat on with a white spray rattlecan. Skip the drybrush completely, looks just as good. No idea why everyone thinks you have to drybrush.
Zenithal is not enough. You need to do edge highlighting... You can do zenithal plus manual edge highlighting but thats slower (potentially higher quality tho). Without edge highlighting there wont be enough contrast
The dry brushing you see of grey then the white involves putting some paint on an old larger paintbrush that might be worn, and wiping off most of the paint, then brushing it lightly and steadily onto the miniature. The grey then white leave the deepest recesses in the black primer, and the white especially picks up on the highest points of the mini. You can also use makeup brushes, believe it or not, which are similar to specialist dry brushes of the same style, but might be cheaper.
The bone (and human skin tones) are designed to be applied over pure white, the army painter bone is really good, but it looks bad on top of anything other than pure white.

I'd be interested in seeing you try this out with coloured undercoats. Take this to the next level.
Iv used a sand coloured drybrush underneath, it resulted in a darker look 🙂

and for yellow i recommend to base with army painter skeleton bone and then wash over it with vallejo yellow game color ink

Do you water down your paints?
I like slap chop as a painting method for quite a few things. I simply don't have the patience to sit down and meticulously highlight every detail.
