Here’s what American discourse says. The economy’s doing just fine, in fact, it’s never been better. In fact, 70% of Americans can’t raise $1000 for an emergency, 80% live paycheck to paycheck, the majority struggle to pay basic bills, and the average American now dies in debt, which means they will never effectively save or own or earn anything: they are something very much like neo-serfs. There are only two countries in the world, in fact, where the gruesome trifecta of falling life expectancy, shrinking incomes, and dwindling savings are true: America and Britain. The American economy is not OK. Capitalism is in rude health, profits to capital skyrocketing, in large part due to massive bailouts. But capitalism is not “the economy”. The economy is people’s lives, and those are falling apart. Yet because “the economy’s doing well”, American thinkers can’t trace the next set of links. They are totally blind to the catastrophic consequences of a destroyed economy. What happens when economies stagnate? When inequality spikes? When a middle class suddenly implodes, as the American middle class did? What happens to failed states, in the end? Well, what tends to happen is fascism. Just like when Weimar Germany became Nazi Germany, or in countries from Spain to Russia to Pakistan to Rwanda. Nationalism erupts, as people try to seize whatever morsels of a failing crop they can for their own tribes, clans, people. Soon enough, the dominant tribe institutionalized all this and claims the social surplus for the true volk, the ubermen, the in-group. Wham! Fascism is born. My friends, other countries are poor and uneducated and powerless. But their discourse is far, far smarter than America’s. Even in Pakistan, thinkers will constantly warn of the dangers of religious extremism (yes, really.) Even in India, intellectuals will constantly warn that rising nationalist extremism spills over easily into fascism (yes, really.) In Argentina and Chile, thinkers will remind people of the dark times of the ascendant fascists, and how they’re just a breath away. And do you know what adds insult to injury? Intellectuals, journalists, and thinkers in those countries face real consequences for saying so. Very real ones. Jail. Prison. Disappearance. Violence. American intellectuals and journalists and thinkers face no consequences whatsoever. And yet they can’t seem to bring themselves to be anything but either fools, cowards, or simpletons, take your pick. Be your own judge to that one. I have more info on my YT channel like this, and more. ~PEACE!

@@aweirdredguy3885 What bothers me the most is that some people are so brainwashed by constant media naratives and government propagandas that they can't even think for themselves. The only logic they rely on can be basically summarized as: China/Russia = Bad, America & Allies = Good. They act like western democracy + capitalism is such a flawless system that they would immediately reject everthing Russia/China, while in reality no human designed system is without its faults and downsides. It's such a shame that this mentality essentially denies the chance for a social system to evolve when people would rather cling to an ideology than critically and objectively examine the system's pros and cons.
Krónika he is not talking about communism, he is talking about the Cold War mentality which gave the excuse to dismantle the social safety net and not have certain basic things like universal healthcare. Meanwhile if you go to Germany you have a thriving capitalist economy with a large safety net including education, medical, housing, retirement, welfare, child care, maternity leave etc. And you go to Berlin and Rosa Luxemburg is still celebrated as a hero and you can stop at Rosa Luxemburg Platz. It's a shame Marx and Engels never published a revised edition, rather than repeatedly mentioning in prologues that they had made a fundamental mistake at the time of drafting, and not specifying what that was. Which was portraying the effect of capitalist growth as being steady impoverishment of the masses, and making poverty the central criticism, which isn't justified outside of the worst economic crises when intermediary classes get impoverished with workers rendered unemployed, instead of making the central criticism the injustice of exploitation, in the fact that wage slavery by underpaying workers for the value of their labour perpetuates slavery during that proportion of working hours when the employee is contributing more value than they have been prmised in pay (and workers have to give their first week or month's work for free, because they are paid in arrears, rather than up front). It was a mistake according to the analysis of the process of capital accumulation in terms of surplus value and the relationship between the inorganic and organic components of capital, whereby the increase in the inorganic component compels the capitalists to increase pay for the organic component, which is the part which actually creates new value, and it was a mistake politically, because people are not enraged by poverty, which is mostly just depressing, especially for those of us enduring it like me, whereas people are enraged by injustice, when they understand they are being ripped off, hour after hour and working week after working week. People don't riot because they're poor, they riot because some obvious attack on their rights has taken place, some glaring injustice.
@Krónika "I mean, if you exclude socialist China which has accounted for the vast majority of all poverty reduction, then poverty has been increasing around the world" *Are there any numbers or reports to prove this?*
Agreed. Get the Martin Malia edition where he shows you all the errors Marx made, and how these were directly responsible for tens of millions of murders down the road.

Milton Friedman himself said that Monopoly is the natural state of Capitalism.
@Jeffrey Cheng wut
@Jeffrey Cheng I agree with TheTrueHappy. I'm sure you can substantiate your claim?
According to Marx in the Manifesto, Communism is society without a government (anarchy) AND the means of production are controlled by the working class collectively, not by single person oligarchs. Capitalism, by contrast, is totalitarian by design and relies heavily on despots.
rectal imposition of dialectic materialism?
@ls7orBust2 There is no such thing as a totally free market. Thus, there is no such thing as "no monoplies".
Stop fucking drinking the libertarian kool aid and think for a second. How can someone call themselves "libertarian" (people might want to read up on the history of anarchist thought, and not the 1960 abomination that the Capitalists appropriated from the left)... and not know the first thing about how hierarchies work? God damn...
Robert Stan elaborate!
~PEACE!
@Navala Thanks, I have a YT channel with more content of videos than I can handle. Thanks for your positivity. Cheers!

So in other words. Nothing will ever change as long as free market capitalism and fiat fractional lending by corrupt people is still the norm.
Fantastic discussion here Abby, Richard is a powerhouse when it comes to explaining the complexities of our economic story and how we got here. Thank you.
The cold war mentality American people are still clinging to is absurdly funny while the rest of the world has moved on long ago.
not everywhere! in my country(France) the media actively relies the antirussian anti chinese propaganda that the us gives to its people, most peolpe are completely brainwashed by neoliberal consumerist culture and do not actively question authorities or the media
It's such a shame that this mentality essentially denies the chance for a social system to evolve when people would rather cling to an ideology than critically and objectively examine the system's pros and cons.
so true!
In the USA very few people will know what the Haymarket Affair was or why we have Labor Day. It is wiped from history and our consciousness.
They haven't moved on though. Name me a major Marxist-Leninist party in the west (outside the US)that's managed to be taken seriously and not been diluted by trotskyists, socdems, and libcoms.

Something to add from the former Eastern block, in confirmation of Abby's starting words - we here now know, that the problem with USSR, leading to its crash, was *not so much economical, but rather with its corrupted late management.* It's about time the average westerners get education too.
The American Dream Is Dead, and we need economic reforms to fix the problem of our nation.

Thank you Abby and Richard, this is great. Good resource for the people who know nothing about socialism or communism, to help them form the basic understanding or change their view point a little bit.

It's the same as zionism.
And those who understand it leaves it for good . Only those with low brain capasity , who needs other to give them for theyr daily bread .Dreams about revolution.
@Krónika Sadly, you're probably right.
@Krónika
"I mean, if you exclude socialist China which has accounted for the vast majority of all poverty reduction, then poverty has been increasing around the world"
*Are there any numbers or reports to prove this?*
Agreed. Get the Martin Malia edition where he shows you all the errors Marx made, and how these were directly responsible for tens of millions of murders down the road.
The excesses of capital (monopoly/usury) AND government (tyranny) must be avoided.
It wasn’t all about women getting into a workplace out of poverty. Women also found great value in independence in financial freedom and equality after wars where they participated because society needed women to work. I think most people forget those aspects over time.

Two giant democratic victories after starting a revolution and defeating Nazis and a great loss by leaving the world open for capital penetration and imperialist plunder after its unpopular overthrow.

I live in Sweden for more than 50 years now. Maybe someone will call Sweden as some kind of "Socialism" country, because of our well developed social welfare system. Call it for what you want, but in the mind of Swedish people is a question of Solidarity. Take this word "Solidarity" in your brain, take a minute and think, what this word means. Is it socialism when you have the opportunity as an individual to have free education, free healthcare, etc. No, its a solidarity from people of this country to every individual.
Well said.... this is what its all about.... Socialism, Capitalism, Communism..are just words without meaning in the real word.
Respect to Abby’s transparency when it comes to journalism. If she continues to tell the truth and good journalism, she will make it big. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
8:00 the need for an invention of the credit card is perfect example of a failing economic model. It causes price skews over time that are not reflective of people's real purchasing ability.
I understand what is being said here and it is a valid point, but you can't remove China from the equation of people lifted out of poverty due to capitalism. That is exactly what lifted them out of poverty. Now if you want to argue that it's some sort of centrally planned capitalism, then that is a valid point as well, but it is still capitalism none the less. Fantastic discussion.
