Rex becomes ok when you see him for what he is... A kid that doesn't know anything about the world and got put into a big adventure that is way to big for a KID. Still like shulk more and elma too because i prefer how they act more with their brain rather then not really thinking. I really don't like early game Rex.

While I find fiora to be very likeable, I wish she was a more complex character. It seems like her only motive is to serve Shulk, and be nice to everyone else. I think the reason why Melia is considered one of the more popular characters - she is much more complex than flora and the rest of the cast (besides Shulk)
I definitely agree that Rex deserved to be placed pretty high. While his type of character is far from my favorite, I do consider him quite well written, there are a lot of factors that explain why he is the way he is, that the the story repeatedly touches on and the Heart-to-Hearts explore further. The most underrated character on the whole list has to be Mumkhar, who I consider to be an absolutely fantastic Love to Hate villain. Him not being complex really doesn't hurt him at all, if anything, more characterization could have underminded what the developers were going with. Malos is a great and hammy villain, but his complexity makes him a lot harder to hate. This is fine for a final villain, but for a villain like Mumkhar being purely evil and despicable works better IMO.
I think a lot of the hate of Rex comes from the fact that his VA and/or the writing doesn't really do the high tension emotional parts well. Rex is just a bad screamer. However he really shines in the quiet moments and occasional humorous parts in the game. As far as 16 year old JRPG Shonen protags go he's defo one of the better ones.
Honestly Mumkhar was my favorite villain from the entire game, mostly because of his line delivery. He comes off as despicable just from the way he talks. Also, he has easily the two best cutscenes in the game (When he kills Fiora and the Unfinished Battle cutscene), so that's part of it.
@@jonasseorum5471 I've played both XC1 & 2 in English and did NG+ playthrough instead with Japanese VAs and I can, in my opinion, say English is far better. Only problem is uh...the long-running meme of Rex's screams, but even then, his voice acting wasn't as bad as people described it, was rather nitpicked if anything. No screw that, bonus points to Rex for being a meme.
I do think he's rated a bit too high in this list, but I expected to hate tora going into the game and was pleasantly surprised that I liked him overall.
I've only played XC1 and 2, so I don't have much contribution on the part of X, Saga, and Gears, but for the most part I think I agree with you on most characters. I actually have a higher opinion of Amalthus due to how much of a foil he is to Malos yet is so obviously the influence behind his actions (more than just them saying that he is). I'd probably put him around the top of A-tier because the conflict between him and Jin really puts a different spin on the entire story of 2. In the same manner, I probably would've put Egil up there with Amalthus simply because almost every line he speaks works so well for 1's story and villain-wise he's the most redeeming quality of 1's plot imo. I don't know where I would've put Pyra, but I do think she's just a bit better than close to the bottom of B-Tier due to her obvious impact on a lot of the cast in 2. I feel Mythra has an overall better character, but when it comes to plot in 2, Pyra really makes up a lot of the Aegis' connections to other characters. Probably nearer to the top of B-tier or up in A-tier for her. I disagree heavily on Tora and Haze, although I really like both of them, but you made those picks clear so no point in explaining I guess. Would've put them down around the middle of A. Other than those I really found your justification for character placements interesting, and most of all was pretty stoked you didn't shit on Rex.

Damn, that is definitely controversial! Also you could say the opposite, and just say amalthus is just “mom died”. I’m not actually saying that, but I do think Jin is better, especially in his interactions with other characters
Amalthus, Malos, and Jin are great characters. Amalthus is super interesting and pretty deep, although he probably could be executed a bit better. He's also a bit of a parallel to Rex, and shows what Rex could've ended up like if he hadn't grown up in such a positive environment.
I don't think you give Jin enough credit, but I agree that Amalthus is a very strong and complex villain. Enel just absolutely despises him because of what he did to Haze, and those are probably two of the characters where his bias is the strongest. A more objective list would have had Haze in like B Tier, while Amalthus would at least be A Tier.
i actually hear quite often that people hate tora and i don't get why. even if you don't like the nopon, which are basically a comic relief race, he still doesn't do stuff that is bad character writing. Also i think riky deserves b tier. his scenes where you really see the 40 year old father of multiple kids shows you why he is not just leaving the party even so he could, with his only reason being in it having debt. even the second oldest dunban, melia is high entia and they live trice as long as homs so her age would be more like 26 in comparison, has nothing near to being such a father like part of the group. also answering the heart to hearts in a way you gain affinity shows that riky isn't just a walking ball of comedy but someone who just is from a different culture so he is different by nature of being nopon.
Part of the Tora hate I've been hearing here and there basically boils down to "pervert = bad", but I don't think it's a bad trait at all, it's not like he's trying to harass the other girls or anything. He's more of a "wholesome" pervert who likes his cute maids. Also, that's like 5% of his whole character, you don't constantly hear about it (like the "Tatsu is a potato" bit that gets old really fast).
@@FlameHricane Personally, the fanservice in general of XC2 was a turn off for me. One of the thins I like about the Xeno franchise is the willingness to avoid pandering in favor of a more serious, albeit open to charming and comedic moments, without shoving too much over-the-top fanservice down the player's throat. Tora wasn't the only one in XC2 which did this somewhat often, though his comedic perv moments interrupted otherwise potentially emotional moments. You have scenes of him mourning the deaths of his family which are undercut by multiple silly fake outs and absurdist humor. Neither of these are inherently; it's simply not what I play Xeno games for. The character motivations tend to have some serious aspects to them, even on Riki or Tora's fronts, and I felt Riki had more to him by wanting to provide for his family and at times giving subtle insight. I didn't really get much of that from Tora. But at the end of the day, XC2 had a broadly lighter tone than basically every other Xeno game, and it virtually never landed for me. I'd go so far as to say I disliked every comedy heavy character. Zeke, Pandoria, and Tora soured me on them straight away and their serious moments were so scarce that when they did happen, I no longer cared enough about them to feel anything due to an expectation that it would b ed undermined by pointless gags. I'm aware there were times in which Zeke and Pandoria veered away from that pitfall, but the expectatoon became so deeply ingrained for most of the cast that it was hard to take anything seriously. I don't want a dramatic scene to have a goofy surprise where Rex and Pyra have the dumb chibi shocked expressions, and Tora was the catalyst of those in spades. It killed the immersion of the game on a whole since I laughed maybe once in a very long game riddled with unnecessary comedy relief. When you have characters like Zeke and Pandoria who are more significant to the themes of the game, and Rex/Pyra/Mythra having plenty of comedy moments, goofy antagonists like Bana, Tora does end up feeling redundant. The overuse of comedy made none of it really stand out, honestly.
Tora in particular is a character who got an entire arc off of a pervert fam of Nopons whose ultimate goal was to make cute maid robot waifu artificial blades, and then he takes a backseat for the entire rest of the game to bring devolved to pervy comic relief projected onto his robot waifu (absolute cringe at Poppi's dog bark heart to heart and "You should be more maid like. Blushy crushy." The flip side is Zeke's great execution on humor. While not completely perfect, almost every time he's on screen and has something funny to say, it's delivered well. "Keep it coming!" "Go die in a fire" "Handling a man's turtle"... there's so many good moments on top of being a very compelling character whose role as the big brother of the group lasts til the very very end of the game. Or Riki (to prove i don't just hate Nopon), whose convinced his whole way through that his friends are "sidekicks" to his journey as heropon, has one of the best introductions of any Xenoblade character that establishes his role and character for the rest of the game, and also heartwarming scenes like his beach scene with taking care of Melia and listening to Dunban.
Okay honestly, I liked tatsu. He was genuinely friendly and the first friend BLADE made in Mira, and without him many important plot points wouldn't have happened.

XD Something I will say is that I think the XCX Party Members are pretty overhated, and the reason I believe so many dislike its cast is because they just brute-force the story when XCX is a game that wants you to focus more on the world as a whole rather than the main story (you don't truly have their full characertization until you do all their Affinity Missions and even Heart-To-Hearts, which is definitely quite a bit of work but once I saw all of them I ended up liking people like Doug quite a bit more). Lao being placed as high as B made me very happy. ^w^
I don't particularly care for Doug, not because he's unlikable or bad, but because he really just feels too normal for my tastes. Then again, my party consists of L, HB and Nagi/Yelv/Celica, so I understand why people hate certain characters, screw boze especially, I went out of my way to provide a home and diplomacy to all these alien forms and you're pissed about it. (Also L and HB are gold, I can never do without my [SUPERIOR DECOY ROUND] or ☆SHOOTING STAAAARRR☆)
Edelgard is my favourite of all the Fire Emblem lords. There's really nobody like her in the entire Fire Emblem series. That said, I like XC2 more, considering it's my favorite game period lol.
That is basically another reason to not take this tier list seriously at all. Edelgard is one of the best well written female characters in gaming, and he said he will defend a character such as Pyra over her.

In a tier list, you put the character regarding his position and importance in the story and how impactful this character really is. And Edelgard would definitely be S tier regardless if you agree with her or not. In my opinion, she is miles beyond Pyra in terms of character. To be honest, the only character in Xenoblade who deserves to be S tier is probably Shulk.
The fact that you can shout "SHION STOP" in one moment and then empathetically sigh "Shion..." in the next is a Testament to how amazing she is as a character. I like how the game doesn't try to make her a great fighter or always have her making sound decisions, and she's not even really the "main protagonist" of the second game (which is more about Jr and the URTVs), but you still know and accept that she's the lead, and that her personality and skills make her extremely relevant all the same. I also loved Momo, although I wish combat- and aesthetic-wise that they had settled into her ether archer form earlier in the series (instead of wanded magical girl).
FinnaBus I got sorta good news. She’s not extremely low. She’s sorta average. She’s my personal favorite character in Xenoblade and my second favorite game character in general
I just started playing xenoblade 2. When I saw Akhos for the first time I freaked out, his Design, to me at least, is one of the best in the game.The way they introduced him was really cool aswell. Him having the ability of foresight (with that one blade that just, dissapears lmao) was super cool, and the fact the played him off as a theater kid made me just, adore him. Getting the backstory of Akhos and Patroka at the end of the main story (dont know if the dlc adds anything to that im waiting to 100% my main story before buying the dlc) made everything that Mikhail said to Patroka (in that one fight with just Patroka and Mihail) make alot more sense. I just, adore him, and probably for no reason hahaha.
Speaking of Mikhail and Patroka, seeing them for the first time immediately made me think of final fantasy, and now seeing their blade art has all but confirmed in my mind that they are a final fantasy oc made by a 15 year old kid on deviant art and I love it.

How do I play them tho? They've never been ported to anything and I don't have a PS1/PS2/Original PS3. Plus, I heard that they're like, super rare physically or something. Is Xenogears on the PS4 store? I want to play that one first.
KrimsonKatt Xenogears isn’t on the ps4 store but it’s on the ps3. So you have that option if you have a ps3. Otherwise you’d have to invest into a lot of money if you want especially gears or saga 3 ($300 lmao). Your only other option would be to emulate them, and I think it’s a perfectly valid option. Emulating does take some time but it’s not as bad as it may seem. There’s updated guides online. The xeno games do have minor issues that you have to change very minimal things to fix. If you do decide to emulate them and ever need help I’m more than happy to help. Just ask if you want to dm me elsewhere
Thank you for giving Rex some love. People hate on Rex because of his voice or his outfit or even that thing he did in chapter 7 with Nia! I understand if people may not like these things about him, but they have nothing to do with him as a character. Change my mind
Rex is well written and interesting when analyzed. I think the issue most people have with him is that at face value, he can be really fucking annoying and feel just plain stupid. I def didn't like him my first run through the game, but he's grown on me with time and I consider him to be pretty darn good. He's also a LOT more compelling in Japanese. The English voice acting is so fucking bad for him unfortunately

The Dickson turn is my least favorite part of the Xenoblade 1 story. I agree that his personality turns so bizarrely 1-dimensional at the end, where almost none of his old personality shines through, and there is no depth to his motivations, nor does he show any complex emotions at all. Just because the turn was foreshadowed does not mean it was good.
I’ve been thinking about ways to make Zanza a bit more interesting. Alvis claimed he truly wanted friendship. What is we make that his primary motivation? Perhaps he waged war against Meyneth/ the Mechonis to be seen as a benevolent protector to the Homs and the High Entia. But, as Alvis said, his memory faded in the people’s mind. So he turns to more desperate means, like the aforementioned war against the Mechonis. (I admit, this is just a spur of the moment. Thoughts?)
I'd also like to being up with Milton that I liked his relationship with Addam and Mik and had some nice moments too like the Mythra cooking scene and with Lora in Hyber villiage. He also show's how great of of person Addam is and his death undoubtedly shook up Mik especially since he helped Mik open up. It's not I disagree with your ranking on him, I just thought I'd mention their's some more going for him than just Mythra plot device.

Emeralda really suffers from being added to the party RIGHT before the end of disc 1. However, I’ll have to contest the claim of her being plot irrelevant-she’s the reason Krelian’s plan to resurrect Deus can move forward and she’s the daughter of a major character (which is why she joins). However, her character development side mission is really easy to miss. Adult Emeralda’s biggest draw is that she’s basically a better version of the character she replaces (more consistent spells and better stat growth than any other party member). It’s just a shame we don’t get more character development for her.

I think Melia is the best character in 1 but I haven't played 2 just yet but I hope to like someone in it as much as her but doubt I will lol. Riki is hilarious and underrated to plus him and Melia have great chemistry.
For me personally my favourite is Pneuma and Jin, I loved seeing Pyra and Mythra finding a reason to want to live and then getting one of the best character designs ever imo, Jin is great too, Jin was a villain that I could really understand and feel sympathy for

There were a few characters I would have placed slightly higher/lower, though I can definitely understand the reasoning behind your choices (at least, for the characters I recognize.) I hope you can release more content including the non-Blade games someday, though seeing how many people haven't even heard of Xenogears or Xenosaga, I can see why that'd be troublesome. A very reasonable tier list, also pretty obvious that Shion is the top of your list, but it's cool, I like Shion too. I really wish Xenosaga can get a remaster. And I also wish KOS-MOS can get another appearance in another Xeno game, hopefully in Xenoblade 3.
I've only played xenoblade 2 so I don't know about the other characters so I don't really have a problem with the list. I just like Pyra as much as Mythra so I would rank them the same plus I like Rex the most in the game.
Best girl is in SS tier, no surprises there. If this were an IGN list than Melia would be the lowest one there because she is “under developed” lmao. Overall good list but I would put Melia up one tier, I do like the bird lady lmao.
Other things aside, I think Zanza should be a bit higher, I know fighting God is a bit of a jrpg trope, but I think they pulled it off very well in XC1, and until playing through it again you won't realize just how much Zanza has influenced from the beginning of the game, like all of the voices you hear when shulk picks up the monado in the research lab, the beginning of God Slaying Sword playing when Reyn picks it up, realizing that the dude you are talking to on prison island is ZANZA and not whatever his name was and much more

Well, since I haven't played Future Connected, Torna, X, or any of the Xenogears or Xenosaga games, my list is significantly shorter so I might as well post it here. S- Reyn, Dunban, Zeke, Shulk, Poppi, Egil A- Melia, Pandoria, Morag, Vandham, Nia, Fiora B- Alvis, Almalthus, Malos, Kallian, Mumkhar, Tora C- Mikhail, Dickson, Jin, Akhos, Zanza, Riki, Pyra, Mythra, Tyrea D- Sharla, Brighid, Patroka, Meyneth, Azurda, Rex, Gadolt E- Vanea, Dromarch, Roc, Aegaeon F- Lorithia, Juju Just for the sake of giving a vague understanding of my opinions on each character F: I genuinely do not like these characters, Lorithia exists as a villain placeholder and Juju... is Juju. E: All incredibly boring. Vanea exists as a guide and the blades in this tier lack any personality with the exception of Dromarch... who's just copy pasted Azurda. D: They each have some quality to them that I like, but they're all easily overshadowed by their peers. C: Each of the villains in this tier have a level of charisma that makes it incredibly difficult for me to dislike them despite the flaws they harbor, with the exception of Jin who's just kind of a cool character who feels incomplete. Probably because I haven't played Torna. The heroes in this tier are all likable with their own varying levels of depth, including Riki, but again fall just short of their peers. Also Tyrea's story is fun to piece together. B: Alvis concept alone earns him this tier, Almathus and Malos dynamic is really interesting, Kallian is a surprisingly impactful character in the story, Mumkhar has too much villainous charisma to dislike, and funny Nopon with a decent level of depth. A: Honestly my reasons for liking each of these characters varies and I don't feel like explaining each of them, so to put it simply they all either have strong personalities that I enjoy, powerful impact on the story, or both. S: Egil is easily the most compelling villain in the two games and envokes one of the most interesting strategies to achieving his goals that I've seen in a while. Poppi manages to deliver emotional scenes far more powerfully than anyone in XC2 despite being a literal robot and that alone is enough to earn her the spot. I love how emotionally incompetent Shulk is as it's a fun spin on the "dumb anime protagonist" since he's intelligent enough to assess situations and come up with plans, but can never for the life of him spit out how he's feeling, love this idiot and his progress throughout the story as he becomes more socially aware. The Zekenator has one of the best entrances into the story and only gets better once you learn more about his heritages and see his reactions to the world around and plans to improve it, also I have a soft spot for "idiot characters who aren't actually idiots." Dunban's cool, what do you want from me? And of course, Reyn. His relationship with Shulk is easily the best friendship of the two games and I love how well he compliments Shulk, being idiotic when it comes to strategies or anything involving his brain really, but when it comes to emotions, he's able to get someone's head straight immediately and either reasure them or prevent them from saying or doing something stupid. Again, I have a soft spot for "idiot characters who aren't actually idiots," and Reyn is one of the best examples of this.
I was really hoping Shion would be ranked highly on this and was so pleased to see where you put her. To me she is hands down one of the most compelling characters in a JRPG and is a big part of why I replay the Xenosaga games every year.
This really makes me want to go back and play Xenogears and Xenosaga. I picked up Xenogears a while back but had to stop playing due to going to school and between a festering obsession with the Fire Emblem series and it being so long ago since I played it, I just haven't been able to get back into it. Meanwhile, I just got Xenosaga but haven't touched it yet. Edit: lol I made this comment long before Edelgard was mentioned.
Miang was the GOAT Xeno character. I mean really there wasn't anything like her back then. Perhaps the most powerful character in the XG universe, but she never relied on her physical strength and got @#$% done not w/ brute force but through manipulation. You could kill her, but she'd get revenge not by plunging a knife into you when you least expect it, but by taking over the body of someone you care about, turn everyone you love/trusted against you and driving you mad. Nobody really trusts her, but everyone needs or wants her approval. She knew when a person needed support and knew when to verbally rip you a new one. Grahf would always strut around like the edgelord he his and she'd put him his place w/ a simple line like "its not polite to stare". Shakhan was an idiot puppet and she let him know it. Elly needed someone on her side and she gave her comfort when she was Gebler. Rasmus needed both caring for and the occasional dressing down. In the Kislev/Aveh lambspat, have at it boys "I'm just gonna align myself with whoever wins anyway" (drops mic, walks out). Part of me thinks that as time passed by the time Ep5 hit, there was a part of her that didn't want to revive deus, after all she was immortal on this planet, she was god and was having so much fun being so much manulipating the sheep.
I’m just glad Malos gets the recognition he deserves. I totally believe Menkin’s voice acting affected his rating as it is absolutely amazing. He’s constantly challenging the protagonists in their philosophy while being hammy!

While I find fiora to be very likeable, I wish she was a more complex character. It seems like her only motive is to serve Shulk, and be nice to everyone else. I think the reason why Melia is considered one of the more popular characters - she is much more complex than flora and the rest of the cast (besides Shulk)

I definitely agree that Rex deserved to be placed pretty high. While his type of character is far from my favorite, I do consider him quite well written, there are a lot of factors that explain why he is the way he is, that the the story repeatedly touches on and the Heart-to-Hearts explore further.
The most underrated character on the whole list has to be Mumkhar, who I consider to be an absolutely fantastic Love to Hate villain. Him not being complex really doesn't hurt him at all, if anything, more characterization could have underminded what the developers were going with. Malos is a great and hammy villain, but his complexity makes him a lot harder to hate. This is fine for a final villain, but for a villain like Mumkhar being purely evil and despicable works better IMO.
I don't find mumkhar to be a bad villain. They don't try to act like he is deep. Heck he even is called out for being shallow and childish by dunban.
I think a lot of the hate of Rex comes from the fact that his VA and/or the writing doesn't really do the high tension emotional parts well. Rex is just a bad screamer. However he really shines in the quiet moments and occasional humorous parts in the game. As far as 16 year old JRPG Shonen protags go he's defo one of the better ones.
Honestly Mumkhar was my favorite villain from the entire game, mostly because of his line delivery. He comes off as despicable just from the way he talks. Also, he has easily the two best cutscenes in the game (When he kills Fiora and the Unfinished Battle cutscene), so that's part of it.

@@jonasseorum5471 I've played both XC1 & 2 in English and did NG+ playthrough instead with Japanese VAs and I can, in my opinion, say English is far better. Only problem is uh...the long-running meme of Rex's screams, but even then, his voice acting wasn't as bad as people described it, was rather nitpicked if anything. No screw that, bonus points to Rex for being a meme.

I do think he's rated a bit too high in this list, but I expected to hate tora going into the game and was pleasantly surprised that I liked him overall.
I've only played XC1 and 2, so I don't have much contribution on the part of X, Saga, and Gears, but for the most part I think I agree with you on most characters. I actually have a higher opinion of Amalthus due to how much of a foil he is to Malos yet is so obviously the influence behind his actions (more than just them saying that he is). I'd probably put him around the top of A-tier because the conflict between him and Jin really puts a different spin on the entire story of 2. In the same manner, I probably would've put Egil up there with Amalthus simply because almost every line he speaks works so well for 1's story and villain-wise he's the most redeeming quality of 1's plot imo. I don't know where I would've put Pyra, but I do think she's just a bit better than close to the bottom of B-Tier due to her obvious impact on a lot of the cast in 2. I feel Mythra has an overall better character, but when it comes to plot in 2, Pyra really makes up a lot of the Aegis' connections to other characters. Probably nearer to the top of B-tier or up in A-tier for her. I disagree heavily on Tora and Haze, although I really like both of them, but you made those picks clear so no point in explaining I guess. Would've put them down around the middle of A. Other than those I really found your justification for character placements interesting, and most of all was pretty stoked you didn't shit on Rex.

Amalthus, Malos, and Jin are great characters. Amalthus is super interesting and pretty deep, although he probably could be executed a bit better. He's also a bit of a parallel to Rex, and shows what Rex could've ended up like if he hadn't grown up in such a positive environment.
Jin is also super deep as a character too. I agree that Amalthus is amazing as well but don't trash Jin either.
I don't think you give Jin enough credit, but I agree that Amalthus is a very strong and complex villain. Enel just absolutely despises him because of what he did to Haze, and those are probably two of the characters where his bias is the strongest. A more objective list would have had Haze in like B Tier, while Amalthus would at least be A Tier.

i actually hear quite often that people hate tora and i don't get why. even if you don't like the nopon, which are basically a comic relief race, he still doesn't do stuff that is bad character writing.
Also i think riky deserves b tier. his scenes where you really see the 40 year old father of multiple kids shows you why he is not just leaving the party even so he could, with his only reason being in it having debt. even the second oldest dunban, melia is high entia and they live trice as long as homs so her age would be more like 26 in comparison, has nothing near to being such a father like part of the group. also answering the heart to hearts in a way you gain affinity shows that riky isn't just a walking ball of comedy but someone who just is from a different culture so he is different by nature of being nopon.
Part of the Tora hate I've been hearing here and there basically boils down to "pervert = bad", but I don't think it's a bad trait at all, it's not like he's trying to harass the other girls or anything. He's more of a "wholesome" pervert who likes his cute maids. Also, that's like 5% of his whole character, you don't constantly hear about it (like the "Tatsu is a potato" bit that gets old really fast).

@@FlameHricane Personally, the fanservice in general of XC2 was a turn off for me. One of the thins I like about the Xeno franchise is the willingness to avoid pandering in favor of a more serious, albeit open to charming and comedic moments, without shoving too much over-the-top fanservice down the player's throat. Tora wasn't the only one in XC2 which did this somewhat often, though his comedic perv moments interrupted otherwise potentially emotional moments. You have scenes of him mourning the deaths of his family which are undercut by multiple silly fake outs and absurdist humor.
Neither of these are inherently; it's simply not what I play Xeno games for. The character motivations tend to have some serious aspects to them, even on Riki or Tora's fronts, and I felt Riki had more to him by wanting to provide for his family and at times giving subtle insight. I didn't really get much of that from Tora.
But at the end of the day, XC2 had a broadly lighter tone than basically every other Xeno game, and it virtually never landed for me. I'd go so far as to say I disliked every comedy heavy character. Zeke, Pandoria, and Tora soured me on them straight away and their serious moments were so scarce that when they did happen, I no longer cared enough about them to feel anything due to an expectation that it would b ed undermined by pointless gags. I'm aware there were times in which Zeke and Pandoria veered away from that pitfall, but the expectatoon became so deeply ingrained for most of the cast that it was hard to take anything seriously. I don't want a dramatic scene to have a goofy surprise where Rex and Pyra have the dumb chibi shocked expressions, and Tora was the catalyst of those in spades. It killed the immersion of the game on a whole since I laughed maybe once in a very long game riddled with unnecessary comedy relief. When you have characters like Zeke and Pandoria who are more significant to the themes of the game, and Rex/Pyra/Mythra having plenty of comedy moments, goofy antagonists like Bana, Tora does end up feeling redundant.
The overuse of comedy made none of it really stand out, honestly.

Tora in particular is a character who got an entire arc off of a pervert fam of Nopons whose ultimate goal was to make cute maid robot waifu artificial blades, and then he takes a backseat for the entire rest of the game to bring devolved to pervy comic relief projected onto his robot waifu (absolute cringe at Poppi's dog bark heart to heart and "You should be more maid like. Blushy crushy."
The flip side is Zeke's great execution on humor. While not completely perfect, almost every time he's on screen and has something funny to say, it's delivered well. "Keep it coming!" "Go die in a fire" "Handling a man's turtle"... there's so many good moments on top of being a very compelling character whose role as the big brother of the group lasts til the very very end of the game. Or Riki (to prove i don't just hate Nopon), whose convinced his whole way through that his friends are "sidekicks" to his journey as heropon, has one of the best introductions of any Xenoblade character that establishes his role and character for the rest of the game, and also heartwarming scenes like his beach scene with taking care of Melia and listening to Dunban.

Something I will say is that I think the XCX Party Members are pretty overhated, and the reason I believe so many dislike its cast is because they just brute-force the story when XCX is a game that wants you to focus more on the world as a whole rather than the main story (you don't truly have their full characertization until you do all their Affinity Missions and even Heart-To-Hearts, which is definitely quite a bit of work but once I saw all of them I ended up liking people like Doug quite a bit more). Lao being placed as high as B made me very happy. ^w^
I don't particularly care for Doug, not because he's unlikable or bad, but because he really just feels too normal for my tastes. Then again, my party consists of L, HB and Nagi/Yelv/Celica, so I understand why people hate certain characters, screw boze especially, I went out of my way to provide a home and diplomacy to all these alien forms and you're pissed about it.
(Also L and HB are gold, I can never do without my [SUPERIOR DECOY ROUND] or ☆SHOOTING STAAAARRR☆)
Edelgard is my favourite of all the Fire Emblem lords. There's really nobody like her in the entire Fire Emblem series. That said, I like XC2 more, considering it's my favorite game period lol.
That is basically another reason to not take this tier list seriously at all. Edelgard is one of the best well written female characters in gaming, and he said he will defend a character such as Pyra over her.

The fact that you can shout "SHION STOP" in one moment and then empathetically sigh "Shion..." in the next is a Testament to how amazing she is as a character. I like how the game doesn't try to make her a great fighter or always have her making sound decisions, and she's not even really the "main protagonist" of the second game (which is more about Jr and the URTVs), but you still know and accept that she's the lead, and that her personality and skills make her extremely relevant all the same.
I also loved Momo, although I wish combat- and aesthetic-wise that they had settled into her ether archer form earlier in the series (instead of wanded magical girl).

I just started playing xenoblade 2. When I saw Akhos for the first time I freaked out, his Design, to me at least, is one of the best in the game.The way they introduced him was really cool aswell. Him having the ability of foresight (with that one blade that just, dissapears lmao) was super cool, and the fact the played him off as a theater kid made me just, adore him. Getting the backstory of Akhos and Patroka at the end of the main story (dont know if the dlc adds anything to that im waiting to 100% my main story before buying the dlc) made everything that Mikhail said to Patroka (in that one fight with just Patroka and Mihail) make alot more sense. I just, adore him, and probably for no reason hahaha.
Speaking of Mikhail and Patroka, seeing them for the first time immediately made me think of final fantasy, and now seeing their blade art has all but confirmed in my mind that they are a final fantasy oc made by a 15 year old kid on deviant art and I love it.
This list makes my monolith no longer soft. Memes aside, fantastic list and everyone should play Xenogears and Xenosaga. You should do a music-related tier list next, such as ranking every boss/battle theme

KrimsonKatt Xenogears isn’t on the ps4 store but it’s on the ps3. So you have that option if you have a ps3. Otherwise you’d have to invest into a lot of money if you want especially gears or saga 3 ($300 lmao). Your only other option would be to emulate them, and I think it’s a perfectly valid option. Emulating does take some time but it’s not as bad as it may seem. There’s updated guides online. The xeno games do have minor issues that you have to change very minimal things to fix. If you do decide to emulate them and ever need help I’m more than happy to help. Just ask if you want to dm me elsewhere

Rex is well written and interesting when analyzed. I think the issue most people have with him is that at face value, he can be really fucking annoying and feel just plain stupid. I def didn't like him my first run through the game, but he's grown on me with time and I consider him to be pretty darn good. He's also a LOT more compelling in Japanese. The Dickson turn is my least favorite part of the Xenoblade 1 story. I agree that his personality turns so bizarrely 1-dimensional at the end, where almost none of his old personality shines through, and there is no depth to his motivations, nor does he show any complex emotions at all.
Just because the turn was foreshadowed does not mean it was good.
I’ve been thinking about ways to make Zanza a bit more interesting. Alvis claimed he truly wanted friendship. What is we make that his primary motivation? Perhaps he waged war against Meyneth/ the Mechonis to be seen as a benevolent protector to the Homs and the High Entia. But, as Alvis said, his memory faded in the people’s mind. So he turns to more desperate means, like the aforementioned war against the Mechonis. (I admit, this is just a spur of the moment. Thoughts?)
I'd also like to being up with Milton that I liked his relationship with Addam and Mik and had some nice moments too like the Mythra cooking scene and with Lora in Hyber villiage. He also show's how great of of person Addam is and his death undoubtedly shook up Mik especially since he helped Mik open up. It's not I disagree with your ranking on him, I just thought I'd mention their's some more going for him than just Mythra plot device.

Emeralda really suffers from being added to the party RIGHT before the end of disc 1. However, I’ll have to contest the claim of her being plot irrelevant-she’s the reason Krelian’s plan to resurrect Deus can move forward and she’s the daughter of a major character (which is why she joins).
However, her character development side mission is really easy to miss. Adult Emeralda’s biggest draw is that she’s basically a better version of the character she replaces (more consistent spells and better stat growth than any other party member).
It’s just a shame we don’t get more character development for her.

A very reasonable tier list, also pretty obvious that Shion is the top of your list, but it's cool, I like Shion too. I really wish Xenosaga can get a remaster. And I also wish KOS-MOS can get another appearance in another Xeno game, hopefully in Xenoblade 3.

I've only played xenoblade 2 so I don't know about the other characters so I don't really have a problem with the list. I just like Pyra as much as Mythra so I would rank them the same plus I like Rex the most in the game.
Best girl is in SS tier, no surprises there. If this were an IGN list than Melia would be the lowest one there because she is “under developed” lmao. Overall good list but I would put Melia up one tier, I do like the bird lady lmao.
Other things aside, I think Zanza should be a bit higher, I know fighting God is a bit of a jrpg trope, but I think they pulled it off very well in XC1, and until playing through it again you won't realize just how much Zanza has influenced from the beginning of the game, like all of the voices you hear when shulk picks up the monado in the research lab, the beginning of God Slaying Sword playing when Reyn picks it up, realizing that the dude you are talking to on prison island is ZANZA and not whatever his name was and much more

Well, since I haven't played Future Connected, Torna, X, or any of the Xenogears or Xenosaga games, my list is significantly shorter so I might as well post it here.
S- Reyn, Dunban, Zeke, Shulk, Poppi, Egil
A- Melia, Pandoria, Morag, Vandham, Nia, Fiora
B- Alvis, Almalthus, Malos, Kallian, Mumkhar, Tora
C- Mikhail, Dickson, Jin, Akhos, Zanza, Riki, Pyra, Mythra, Tyrea
D- Sharla, Brighid, Patroka, Meyneth, Azurda, Rex, Gadolt
E- Vanea, Dromarch, Roc, Aegaeon
F- Lorithia, Juju
Just for the sake of giving a vague understanding of my opinions on each character
F: I genuinely do not like these characters, Lorithia exists as a villain placeholder and Juju... is Juju.
E: All incredibly boring. Vanea exists as a guide and the blades in this tier lack any personality with the exception of Dromarch... who's just copy pasted Azurda.
D: They each have some quality to them that I like, but they're all easily overshadowed by their peers.
C: Each of the villains in this tier have a level of charisma that makes it incredibly difficult for me to dislike them despite the flaws they harbor, with the exception of Jin who's just kind of a cool character who feels incomplete. Probably because I haven't played Torna. The heroes in this tier are all likable with their own varying levels of depth, including Riki, but again fall just short of their peers. Also Tyrea's story is fun to piece together.
B: Alvis concept alone earns him this tier, Almathus and Malos dynamic is really interesting, Kallian is a surprisingly impactful character in the story, Mumkhar has too much villainous charisma to dislike, and funny Nopon with a decent level of depth.
A: Honestly my reasons for liking each of these characters varies and I don't feel like explaining each of them, so to put it simply they all either have strong personalities that I enjoy, powerful impact on the story, or both.
S: Egil is easily the most compelling villain in the two games and envokes one of the most interesting strategies to achieving his goals that I've seen in a while.
Poppi manages to deliver emotional scenes far more powerfully than anyone in XC2 despite being a literal robot and that alone is enough to earn her the spot.
I love how emotionally incompetent Shulk is as it's a fun spin on the "dumb anime protagonist" since he's intelligent enough to assess situations and come up with plans, but can never for the life of him spit out how he's feeling, love this idiot and his progress throughout the story as he becomes more socially aware.
The Zekenator has one of the best entrances into the story and only gets better once you learn more about his heritages and see his reactions to the world around and plans to improve it, also I have a soft spot for "idiot characters who aren't actually idiots."

And of course, Reyn. His relationship with Shulk is easily the best friendship of the two games and I love how well he compliments Shulk, being idiotic when it comes to strategies or anything involving his brain really, but when it comes to emotions, he's able to get someone's head straight immediately and either reasure them or prevent them from saying or doing something stupid. Again, I have a soft spot for "idiot characters who aren't actually idiots," and Reyn is one of the best examples of this.
I was really hoping Shion would be ranked highly on this and was so pleased to see where you put her. To me she is hands down one of the most compelling characters in a JRPG and is a big part of why I replay the Xenosaga games every year.

This really makes me want to go back and play Xenogears and Xenosaga.
I picked up Xenogears a while back but had to stop playing due to going to school and between a festering obsession with the Fire Emblem series and it being so long ago since I played it, I just haven't been able to get back into it. Meanwhile, I just got Xenosaga but haven't touched it yet.

Miang was the GOAT Xeno character. I mean really there wasn't anything like her back then. Perhaps the most powerful character in the XG universe, but she never relied on her physical strength and got @#$% done not w/ brute force but through manipulation. You could kill her, but she'd get revenge not by plunging a knife into you when you least expect it, but by taking over the body of someone you care about, turn everyone you love/trusted against you and driving you mad.
Nobody really trusts her, but everyone needs or wants her approval. She knew when a person needed support and knew when to verbally rip you a new one. Grahf would always strut around like the edgelord he his and she'd put him his place w/ a simple line like "its not polite to stare". Shakhan was an idiot puppet and she let him know it. Elly needed someone on her side and she gave her comfort when she was Gebler. Rasmus needed both caring for and the occasional dressing down. In the Kislev/Aveh lambspat, have at it boys "I'm just gonna align myself with whoever wins anyway" (drops mic, walks out).
Part of me thinks that as time passed by the time Ep5 hit, there was a part of her that didn't want to revive deus, after all she was immortal on this planet, she was god and was having so much fun being so much manulipating the sheep.

I loved your placement of Tora as well I always thought he was in ways a better/improved riki who was already a good and loveable character
I’m just glad Malos gets the recognition he deserves. I totally believe Menkin’s voice acting affected his rating as it is absolutely amazing. He’s constantly challenging the protagonists in their philosophy while being hammy!
I'll definitely watch this when I'm finished with XC2. I've been loving your videos on XC1 so far
