I don't see why storebought cow's cream wouldn't work! Just make sure there are no stabilizers added. Cultures and enzymes are ok! Please let me know what you think of your own homemade cultured butter and buttermilk!
Tried churning my store brought sour cream for over 30 minutes and while it does get runny, it doesn't seem to separate 😭 The packaging doesn't mention any stabilizers not sure why it isn't working 😢
Yes that’s the best way, that’s the way my mom always made it, she would fill the churn an sit it behind the stove and let it sour. I still make it this way with cows milk. Lot of these old traditions have been lost but are coming back, I guess I have always been a homesteader because that’s the way I was raised but I’m an oldtimer now! Lol good memories of the past. Keep up the good work teaching the old ways.
Heather another video came across while I was looking for a recent video, I love it. From one goat mom to another. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.
I love all the tit bits of information and knowledge explaining the process and the reasons behind things. Very informative and entertaining at the same time.
I may suggest instead of using the wooden paddles to wash and salt the butter, please try the dough hook on the stand mixer. You can wash the butter on slow speed changing the water a few times to remove the remaining buttermilk. When the water is clear after final wash, drain water add salt and let it mix thoroughly. You"ll find this is a much easier hands off approach.
I learn something new from every vlog you make. This sounds so good. Can you buy cultured butter in stores? Wishing you and family a very happy holidays!🐐🌲🐐😃
Great video I learn so much from watching your channel. Can you do some cooking video using deer or the turnips. I always run outta ideas cooking dinner and we get on a cycle of the same stuff all the time. Gets old quick. 😊 thanks for sharing with us..
I've made butter in my food processor. This time, I'll make it with sour cream instead. I use unsalted butter all the time. Also, I'm glad to hear there are butter molds to be had. Thanks!
This looks awsome. I have made butter in the past with jersey milk but will have to try this way, maybe with the goats I'll be getting from you😉 i loved the baby trying to sneak past in the background lol
Thank you Heather! This is a GREAT video!! I've made lots of butter, but never from sour cream! Definitely want to try that now!! I just skim the cream from the milk so it takes me quite a while to get enough to make butter. I have a separater but I find it difficult to get as clean as i feel it needs to be. Not sure anymore of the brand, have had it many years, what is yours like? Now I'm all excited to make butter!!! Do you have a good recipe for cottage cheese? I haven't found one I'm totally happy with yet! God bless to you & your family!
To make cottage cheese we have just left the raw milk out on the counter to clabber! The curds are not as defined and textured as store bought cottage cheese. I would love to figure that out too! If I do I will let you know. I have the Slavic Beauty cream separator (from Caprine Supply) and it comes apart (many pieces) very thoroughly and can definitely get totally clean. I don't want to use it more than once a week though because it is a process to break it all down. Not difficult just tedious. Right now I get a quart of cream from 2.5 gallons of milk, but that's with it set at a pretty thick consistency. I need to play around with that! Definitely let me know when you make butter with sour cream!
That's awesome! I had no idea you could make butter from sour cream. It does make sense. I really love all you videos. I saw a commercial that the one of the Vitamix can make almond butter very quickly from almonds. I wonder if it would make regular butter quicker than the KitchenAid Mixer would?
I've seen blender butter recipes before! I bet it would work! If you over whip your butter you get whipped butter which may or may not be what you're going for. So watch it!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Good point! I hadnt thought of whipped butter. My hubby likes whipped butter and whipped cream cheese but I dont really care for it whipped lol.
Sour milk wouldn't work because you can only get butter out of cream. You can do things with sour raw milk but I wouldn't try to do anything with sour or rancid pasteurized milk. ♡
It got sour in the fridge from being in there too long before I dealt with it. It does taste goaty as it sours but we like that. It tastes "of goat" but not "like a goat" LOL!!
Yes just make sure if you're going to let the cream go sour that it is raw cream. Letting pasteurized cream sour would be a bad thing, as the cream would go rancid and not be cultured like with raw milk. You can use fresh sour cream from the grocery store as long as it doesn't have ingredients besides cream and culture! 😊
For butter you'd need to use cream. The clabber curds won't cream nicely and stay clumpy and a tad gritty when you mix them up. If you want you can make almost a ricotta out of them but not butter. If you want to make butter you need to use cream and whip it into butter. Let me know if you'd like me to link you to a butter video! ❤
Some goat milk tastes like the farm. It would depend on what the milk tastes like! Our milk from our Nigerians has that "goat" flavor because of the high butterfat content, but the LaMancha milk is very clean tasting like cow's milk!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Have you thought of trying to make clotted cream? It is a thick almost buttery cream that we Brits put on scones etc. You need a rich cream and I know it needs to be heated for the clotted cream to form. There are recipes on the internet - the milk/cream has a high content of butterfat.
@@SageandStoneHomestead I think that my first mistake was put too much sour cream and maybe not cold enough. I don’t know. I gonna try again anyway. Thanks for your attention.
I'm here anytime! I have found myself that very cold cream works best. I don't know why but I've tried it with warm cream straight out of the cream separator and it never works for me!

Where do you buy RAW Cultured Sour cream? The store bought cultured sour cream with enzymes has milk in it and won't work.
In Europe, butter is cultured... and it's amazing!
YESSS I used to buy cultured butter but it didn't occur to me how the culturing may happen. 😅
Salt was historically used to preserve butter. To utilize it you had to kneed it in cold water to dissolve it away the salt, than you can eat it.
That's so awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!

Who doesn't love butter? Our youngest used to beg for it and eat it like cheese. We had to keep a limit on him 😅

This is the Slavic Beauty Cream Separator and I got it from Caprine Supply Online!

Hi 😊 I’m watching your videos from austria. Just started today and I love them! I was wondering if I can make butter out of rancid milk also?
Sour milk wouldn't work because you can only get butter out of cream. You can do things with sour raw milk but I wouldn't try to do anything with sour or rancid pasteurized milk. ♡
Did your cream clabber/sour on the counter or in the fridge? How long did it take to sour/clabber? Did it take on any goaty taste?
It got sour in the fridge from being in there too long before I dealt with it. It does taste goaty as it sours but we like that. It tastes "of goat" but not "like a goat" LOL!!
@@SageandStoneHomestead thanks for answering! I'll have to try this! Do you still make the cultured butter?
Yes! We save newest milk for cheese and older milk to skim and make butter ♥

Does the butter taste like goats? I remember someone putting goat milk in my tea once and I wasnt keen on the goat taste.

You could have added ice cold water in it
We could but usually it isn't necessary. The tap has been cold enough
I bought a sour cream at the Walmart but it never works. 😭
Do the ingredients have anything other than cream? Like is there a stabiliser in it?
@@SageandStoneHomestead I read here right now, it’s just “cultured cream”. I spent 40 minutes on my mixer.
I'm so sorry it didn't work, it sounds like it should have!! Did it change consistency at all?

So, theoretically you can buy sour cream and make butter.
I think so if there's no stabilizers or anything else in it but cream and cultures.
