WHOAH! IT'S THE ACTUAL ATLAS PRO!! hahah that's awesome
Love your videos!
"Than I"...-😉
Atlas Pro will go to the next level now!!
Come on Atlas time to upgrade
"Why have I been using these big beefy machines?" The answer is heat. You can make an insanely powerful laptop but the form factor will eventually limit performance as the heat has nowhere to go. I'm sure it did run really well for this tutorial. Keep using it for another four hours straight and that's where you'll see the difference between a laptop and a desktop.
The other reason is cost. Laptops are way less bang for your buck than a desktop.
Is this the first time in history a verified user’s comment has added value to a video?!
Very true. Having a good laptop cooling pad does help though...that, taking a couple of extra breaks here and there (if time affords you that luxury) to put the laptop into sleep mode for a bit.
Yup, if you work at one place regularly, it just makes sense to get desktop. Way better performance for less cost. And you will get more productivity out of dedicated workspace anyways.
You're completely ignoring the fact that you can cool the laptop off.
On top of that, Intel's chips are kind of shit compared to AMD's.
As someone who has no interest in making maps, this was super interesting and now I want to make a bunch of maps.
documentary king 👑
Just start to do,your own OpenStreetMap renderings for things that are important to you?
Weird. As someone who has tremendous interest in making maps...I wasn't too interested in this video. idk. I still hit the like button though because this is theoretically super in my wheelhouse.
"command+a"
the Mac user is leaking Johnny
The Macbook just on the bottom left of the frame...
The video editing animation at the beginning is made on a mac, you can see finder (mac's file manager) being used...

@@yoshilikestrains you aren't wrong.

@@phineas7423 depends on the task really.
they have to say that because otherwise their processor names are unintelligable
Haven’t even finished watching it yet, but I’m hardcore hooked. Really grateful you took the time to show us this...
cool to see you here mr. heimler!
Yeah, we get it, you got a 10th Gen processor for free, don't remind us every 30 seconds...!! Stopped watching after 5 minutes... I'm bored of the advert.....

did you mention that this small tiny laptop has "11 gen evo processor by intel" ?
Armies around the globe: "Now we can make a badass strategy presentation"
Lol
Jhonny: "This is sort of like Google Maps"
Mapbox developers: "Ouch"
OpenStreetMap Contributors: "Well... (C) OpenStreetMap Contributors"
The ouch is more like to OpenStreetMap (who stores the information Mapbox distributes) and the contributors (organizations and people) of the maps... like myself 😅 (but my contributions are limited and kinda old at this time)
Mapbox is to Google Maps as McLaren is to Chevrolet.
If this doesn’t involve walking carefully along coastlines I’ll be gutted
Don't worry some of us do that :)
Lol
It's funny when Johnny has to use these Laptops for sponsorship deals, but he obviously uses a Macbook normally. More interested in if he will get a Apple Silicon Macbook Pro when the 16'' is released.
He probably would tbh.
I’m sure he will
I’m guessing even the 13” Macbook Pro with the M1 chip would run laps around the Evo, no need to wait for the 16” one...but yeah, the man’s gotta eat, no problem, we understand
He probobly will, but it's gonna suck for GPU heavy programs so they probobly won't sponsor him.

THE VIDEO WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR: THANK YOU
Just watched it. All 30 minutes. Nothing explicitly difficult. Complete workflow step by step. Just Johnny opening our eyes and transcending our perspective to what's possible. Outstanding value!

Damn... I’ve always known about the geo layers plugin, especially cause I do the same old workflow you used to do essentially... but didn’t realize it was THAT good. Holy crap that saves a lot of time rather than animating a 3D null, a camera, a rotation null, blah blah blah 😅😂 $279 totally will be worth it. Thanks for the video

Hi, I have a 900$ budget, I can either get a laptop or build a desktop. I'd love to be able to use geo-layers comfortably as well as other adobe software. Could you please provide some detail on specs I should get?

You’re bringing cartography to the modern era, Johnny! Keep it up!
I initially read this as "How I Take My Naps"
that would be an interesting video.

I wonder if it's the same reason I can't.

Yeah the new M1 Macs kinda kill any intel processor now. And Adobe optimizes their apps for Mac
I'm pretty sure he said he's testing a 16" MacBook Pro with an M1X chip.
He natrually said command+C for copy so guess what

As an Architecture student, bless your soul. Also, since you're interested in mappings, I suggest you read "Image of the City" by Kevin A. Lynch.

Me: still using a 4th gen.
The funny thing is that Intel is actually using the design the released in their 7th Gen processor and have just been updating the name and making tiny improvements. Due yourself a favor and go AMD next time

Your storytelling and everything is really really good. But it is your AE mapping skills that build your brand.

Hi Johnny. You're the reason I got into GIS and mapmaking (back when you were still doing Borders). This is a really great video even without GIS involved!

OMG thank you so much for making this, Johnny! I'm not a map maker but I've been so damn curious about how you make the best maps. Thanks for all the videos. You're amazing.
Johnny geeking out over digital maps is the early Christmas present I didn’t think I needed…but here we are. 🎄❤️🥰
I haven’t watched the whole vid yet, but honestly thank you. A few days ago, for a school project, I tried to recreate one of your vox videos. It was like a combination of your Cuba and Syrian War video. I legit had no clue where to start, but saw that you used geo layers in one of the clips, so I started using that. Then I figured out how to use camera and everything. It wasn’t amazing, but I finished it, and I learned a lot! But I just wanna say, I appreciate this content the most. Of course all your other content is also amazing :) thank you!
Btw didn’t buy geolayers, used the trial lol

A Million thanks Johnny!!! First came onto your videos about a month ago and was blown away at how you make these maps. Just downloaded Geolayers now and getting the hang of it pretty quckly.
Johnny, fantastic video as always. I have no use for mapmaking as a student, yet I sat watching this video as entertained as ever. Your brain is so fascinating, and to learn about your workflow strategies was as enjoyable as educating.
7:03 YOU CHANGED MY LIFE! Thank you.
I wonder if the free option of QGIS and Blender could give you a similar result :)
Possibly, you could use the time tools to animate things. Though he uses programs that are made for graphic design and animation whereas QGIS is more about the data. But it could be done with a lot of work.
I have a lot of respect for you for sharing your skills and journey Johnny, it's a great insight
Thx mate, great concise workflow insight. I’ve owned geolayers for 3 yrs and haven’t taken the time to actually learn it, this has me up and running in a few hours. Brilliant.
I'm starting to think you can probably make a lot of this in Blender, it might take a bit longer, but it's probably doable and for free. It'd be nice if it also had the geojson stuff.
It is all just openstreetmap data, so convert to whatever you want^^
I just had an advert about Switzerland before this video and i just find that beautiful haha
Sharing this workflow is sooo unbelievably generous of you.
I literally was watching a how to make maps like Vox video to try and emulate you and then you post this and Now I’m sooo HYPED 😭🙌🏼
Step 1. Do it the "cheap" way
Step 2. Get sponsored by intel
Step 3. Install $279 plugin
GeoLayers may have improved your work, but thinking back on the early Vox days, I can only appreciate even more how dedicated and creative you are, Johnny! If only I had mapbox when I designed books for architecture undergrads 😂
dude thanks so much for posting this. Your generosity is astounding
The efforts behind the production of these videos is absolutely commendable Johnny! 👏🎬
This is a really brilliant longform ad for Intel. I was super interested, and not annoyed by the fact that it was totally an ad. Good job, all. Make that money, Johnny.
I was a little annoyed. First of his videos ive watched, im hesitant to watch more if his money grubbing is always so heavy handed. God, im so sick of hearing about the 11th gen evo.
I'm offended this video doesn't include GIS (as someone that has a geography degree XD)
How about him using Mercator for every single map? Even for animations showing countries close up where there are dozens of better projections that introduce less distortion.
Isn't Arc GIS expansive? or is GIS a completely different thing?
@@mathewtoll6780 Arc GIS is a software and it is expensive. There are many great free GIS options out there though such as QGIS.
This sort of workflow really doesn't need to be so GIS intensive. As a geodesigner, it's often important to get out of analytic software and into design software as quickly as possible.
A good shapefile or two goes a long way for one animation, but why spend all the extra time when what you need is open source and linkable?
If you need niche data (disputed borders, treaty boundaries, resource lines, shipping routes), well sure you can spend more time on it. It's just about efficient use of time for the story.
@@ryanleethomas The issue I see with it is using Mercator projection for every single project. Mercator has some advantages but it is far from a silver bullet and distorts things pretty terribly near the poles. Some have even accused it of being colonialist because it makes Europe look way larger than it is and make areas near the equator significantly smaller in comparison.
really enjoy the videos you made over the years, keep up the good work
Thank you so much for this! Your videos are so aesthetically pleasing

damn bro, intel sponsorship? respect
Bruh it was so cringey and full of misleading info tho.
@@phineas7423 i love how you commented on everyone's comment about intel😂
@@peterisaac16 I'm surprised at myself lol. It just really pisses me off when companies take advantage of content creators. And it baffles me that Intel would do it. I mean, it's not like they are a startup that has to claw tooth and nail to try to obtain profitability - they are a multi million dollar company, and we should expect better of them.
@@phineas7423 you know why that happen? that's because unlike AMD, which is headed by an doctorate engineer (Lisa Su), Intel's headed by a guy that has a masters on business administration. that pretty much sums up why currently intel is only focusing on making money instead of actually innovating. it's a shame that a last gen ryzen 4000 still beats an 11th gen on many workload, mainly multithreaded ones.

Me: “How I take my naps”
I love documentary videos and now I am learning from you how you :) I think even if you are not good at making maps, your content in your videos is still amazing!
THIS VIDEO IS HEAVEN SENT! Thanks Johnny!
I've been using Geolayers for some time now. I always thought I was the only motion designer interested in maps. The only thing that bothers me using Open Street or Mapbox in Geolayers is the legal requirement for on screen attribution. That's why I end up using NASA's imagery and a world map vector file most of the time. I still align and parent all of this to a hidden Geolayers map so I can use all the data features and labelling. Best of both worlds :)
You should make a tutorial on that. I feel like many people would appreicate a way to avoid the on screen attribution.
"They don't love you like I love you." -Johnny Harris
This is beyond amazing Johnny!! Thanks!!
I love how you do most of your stuff yourself 🙏🏻 This requires lots of skills and patience. I do my own composing, editing, mixing & mastering, rendering so I know what’s involved 😓 Kudos to you for mastering this many skills! Respect ++
Using Windows: "You can... cmd+A to..."
I feel he'd never voluntarily use other computers than Macs. Kinda silly sponsorship.
It's also full of misleading info. I hate when sponsors take advantage of people's ignorance to push BS. VPN sponsors are the worst for this, but as a computer engineer I am quite supprised to see into go down this route.
Came here just for this. Only a long time Mac user would use the term "cmd".
Well Macs are not very good for data processing, so for people that are into maps, map making, and GIS, Windows is the go to. Apple is notorious for not allowing open source software on their platform. It’s a simple mistake lol I have a MacBook and also a Microsoft laptop I make that mistake all the time. Chillllllll
@@phineas7423 Could you please explain which parts are misleading? I might get a new laptop soon and I'd appreciate more info!
@@ShinYoungNoh the misleading part is the claim atha working with Adobe on optimizing the software for the hardware has made the program run significantly faster. In reality, this is only going to cause a render time decrease if about 5% and any AMD chip will knock Intel's offering out of the water, even without the integration. Not only that, but AMD's CPUs will cost a lot less. On top of that, any GPU is going to beat a CPU in rendering by a landslide, decreasing render times by 400% to 50000% depending on the situation. So he is advertising the wrong tool for the job.
For the longest time I kept hearing "a rock"😂
I've always loved the map work on Vox videos, and had no idea you were behind them. Thank you for sharing this!
