Had a pop at this last year and the results were ridiculous, so thank you. 1st, 2nd and 3rd in my local show and then chopped up, blanched and frozen and were still lovely 3 months later. Sithee later!
Hi Dan. Love how you do the carrots in the boxes. Picked up some polystyrene boxes from my local Aquarium last year and grew some carrots in them which I put on top of my shed roof..Bang on 👍 Watch those ribs with all that pulling good buddy Haha. All the best Dan and stay safe, Andy & Karen 👍😎
Cracking video, I did have trouble with the sharp sand keep falling out of the tube so incorporated roughly 40% builders sand and attached a reducer from 68 to 50mm, hand over the end to cause a vacuum, worked perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to pass on your knowledge.
Hi Dan ✋ Nice to see someone planting something this year, it’s been shocking. I lost some early spuds 🥔 and some tomatoes 🍅 but still have a few to go at. Great video again. Thanks for the info. Regards. Eamonn.👍
Nice one mate. I have a bendy one and have to pull it sometimes... Lovely carrots though. Grown in gods country. Not been back for two years too see mi mam...
May I ask do you core last years holes filled with compost out so that once all the carrots have been pulled and fill the bores back up with sand ready for the next year?
Eyup Dan. I've got a very small garden with a six to ten foot brick wall all the way around and the carrot flies can't get out or don't want to. My raised bed is two feet tall and every time I grow carrots they are knackered by carrot fly. Darwin would be proud. Wind? Sithi after! Dave

There is no bottom to the box. Mine is sat on a weed membrane but if you sit it on a soil bed you'll get even bigger carrots as the tap roots grow into the soil. Cheers,Dan

Wow fantastic.
Wow beautiful
Those carrots are amazing!!!
Much obliged for the brilliant idea.
Excellent thanks for vid.

I tried some in a small bucket and they did well too.
Cheers Dan
Good to see you at it again remember watching the old videos and the prizes you got cheers 🍻
Those were the days. 😉
Cheers,Dan
Growing these for food, you really are working smarter not harder!
Do you think this method you’re using would work well for other root crops like beets and radishes?

I love your funnel 😀
Hey Dan, that is soooo cool! I must give that a go! Thank you for the direction from today's vid.
amazing!!! it is reall called a perfect idea from your own experiment. thanks fro sharing this.
Impressive every time I see you do this.
I'm doing that next year thanks for letting me know your way 👍

Been freezing this year.
I'm weeks behind.
Gonna be minus 3 tonight so emptied greenhouse into the porch.
Sick of it.
Cheers,Dan
Amazing! Really lovely way to grow carrots!
Trying this out this year, I am very interested to see what results I get. Your carrots look AMAZING!
Howd they come out?
At the end of the season what do you do with the sand, do you replace it or reuse it next year?
Wow! So impressed those are fantastic carrots
I would love to see one of these hollowed out, stuffed, and baked.
That'll do! What kind of seed did you grow? Love your videos!
Amazing! God Bless from Wiltshire, England
Great video good luck with them, what variety are your carrots please
Sweet Candle - I grew them too last year and they are a lovely eating carrot - added bonus, they'll sit in the ground well past Christmas
Wonderful results bud. Greetings from Bulgaria. Now do perfect strawberry?
Do you feed them along the way or do they only get the pure compost you start them with as overall food?
Do you fertilize throughout the growing cycle?
Fantastic, Dan! What variety of carrots do you grow? Take care of those ribs, my friend!
The tastiest and also best for show is Sweet Candle.
Cheers,Dan
how do you clear the compost from the hole after & do you reuse it ?
Same question
You can use the corer again to take the compost out and then redig the sand and use it time after time.Cheers,Dan
I don’t dislike it at all that was an accident sorry 😞 went to press like. I love this video
I dont know how you do that with bum ribs. Love all your videos. I think I need to try this. Stay safe!
Ribs are much better than they were .
Cheers Dan
Interesting birds in the background, any idea what they are?
I think it is a song thrush 😊
@@jucjuc314 Thanks for that. Here in Brighton & Hove I have never seen a thrush, song or mistle, in over 30 years.
Really interesting video. Do you refill planter with sharp sand each year. What do you do with the sharp sand at the end of the season ?
I remove as much compost from the sand as I can and reuse it year after year.
Cheers Dan.
Great video, how many planter boxes do you have going at any one time.
Are you self sufficient in carrots
What time of year do you sow the seed? April?
What variety are those? Nantes, autumn king etc
What fertilizer do you use?!?! Those are Amazing!
I don't usually use any.
Carrots aren't big feeders and can get huge with little or no added fertiliser.
Cheers Dan
What do you do end of season as presumably you can’t reuse sand as there will be compost mixed in with it?
I am looking to try this next year but what do you do with the sand after?
Is there a way to re use it or is it a one time only?
Just remove as much compost from the holes after harvest and then reuse the sand year after year.
Cheers,Dan
@@Allotment-diaryUk thank you keep up the good work and see you at Harrogate.
Proud dad!
What type fertilizer you use?
Nice one mate. I have a bendy one and have to pull it sometimes... Lovely carrots though. Grown in gods country. Not been back for two years too see mi mam...
lmao
I love a good tug on the old root.
Can't beat it.
Is it necessary to have the box above the ground level? Can I dig a cube hole in ground and put sand there?
When you say "sharp sand" where would you get such sand ? I'm in the U.S.
LOVE IT WHEN YOU HARVEST WASHED CARROTS ROFL
Pfft...found the jealous can't grown weeds commenter! 🤣🤣
Do you recommend successive sowing say at fortnightly intervals to avoid having to harvest all at the same time ?
May I ask do you core last years holes filled with compost out so that once all the carrots have been pulled and fill the bores back up with sand ready for the next year?

Yeah 2ft isn't guaranteed but may keep the lazy ones out.
You need to try some enviromesh me thinks.
Cheers,Dan

Can you pleas specify, what is the diameter of the tube?
Nice! Thank you for the video!
How did they taste?
Actually they are the sweetest carrot I have ever tasted even when they grow to a big size.
Cheers,Dan 👍
@@Allotment-diaryUk 👍 🥕 Wonderful!
Blessings from Virginia, USA
When did you put them in please
how can we find the sand
Hi,
I just have a question .
How come that you pulled the carrots inside the tunnel but you seeded them outside?
Yes he sowed them in buckets, waited till they grew a little, picked off weaker ones before transplanting the strongest into the raised bed.
why sand? is it to keep the weeds away and better for a carrot?
What verity where do you buy the seeds?
What sort of?
Do you put a bottom on those boxes or is it in contact with the ground? I’m gonna have a go at this, just need to find some wood 👍
There is no bottom to the box.
Mine is sat on a weed membrane but if you sit it on a soil bed you'll get even bigger carrots as the tap roots grow into the soil.

@@Allotment-diaryUk thank you so so much for the tip!!!!
Sorry Dan. I should have read the comments before asking the question as you have answered it before. Thanks. Stay safe.
Can you please show what sand is used.
He said sharp sand.
I use sharp sand or grit sand.
Cheers
look forward to seeing how they come out 🙂🌱🌱
