*You are a great guy my friend GROWVEG, but more importantly a good teacher. You also came across as very genuine and willing to share all that you know. May you grow in wisdom, I wish you abundant crops, happy gardeniiiiiiiiiing!!!*
Thanks so much, that's very kind of you to say. And very happy gardening to you too - I wish you great abundance and joy this growing season. :-)
I absolutely agree maybe it’s because he is a Brit like me…ha ha. No really Happy Garden I concur! ❤️
He is the best!!
Can you multisow carrots?
@@lunargoddess2002 Conventional gardening wisdom says no, that carrots and parsnips, both, put out too long a taproot too early in their growth and are far too resentful of having those roots disturbed, to trust that you'll get a good harvest. Conventional wisdom predicts forking and twisting which, if you're a market grower, is generally undesirable.
That said, if I wanted to attempt the experiment *as* an experiment of multi-sowing carrots, I think I'd begin by sowing those little, round French market carrots, known as "Tonda di Parigi" (or "...di Parisi") in Italian, and simply as "Parisienne" in French. They're about the size of a ping pong ball or a salad radish at maturity, and being round they're not too upset by heavy soils if that's what you're dealing with.
If I were not unhappy with the results and wanted to know what other carrot varieties I could multi-sow, I'd next try one of the blocky, heavy-bodied carrots like "Oxheart," which was bred to handle thick, heavy soils. (I'd try to amend the soil, too, to give my carrots the easy and adequate drainage they prefer, no matter what variety of carrot I tried to grow.)
From there, I might continue to try multi-sowing carrots which were getting a little bit longer and a little bit more slender until I found the carrots which just refused to tolerate multi-sowing, but I believe the further you get from a short, round or stocky, very thick-bodied carrot (which doesn't mean *small,* it means more length proportionate to the carrot's girth or the size of its shoulders) the more likely you'll get forking and twisting and as Ben has shown, some very artistic-looking vegetables.
Good success to you!
Last year I let a bunch of carrots bloom in the summer, which attracted a great variety of insects to observe. The plants went to seed, and "self-sowed" in the garden beds, growing over a dry and cold winter. The new crop is the best I've ever grown, and I didn't have to do a thing!
Wow - that's amazing! What a great result. :-)
Not even thinning?
I live down in south GA. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PLANT MY CARROTS? I WASNT SUCESSFUL LASY YEAR.
Heather, mother nature at it's finest. She always knows when to sprout his seed. Great garden tale thanks
@@jaquitamaynard7326Jan/Feb is a great month in deep south.
Now, I’m 63 yers old and the sight of you sitting cross legged on the woodchip fills me with envy! I do remember those days but sadly no longer possible. 😀
Hope you are still getting to enjoy your garden though. 😀
@@GrowVeg absolutely. I started off with one allotment last September and now have 5 x 10 rod plots! I may be tired at the end of the day but I’m having a blast 💖💖💖
Try 84 but I still garden.
I'm 72 and have found yoga has helped to keep me supple despite athritis.
Me, too.
But at least we haven't been "planted" yet!
God bless you.
Just a tip for anyone trying to grow carrots in denser soils with heavier clays and such, if you plant seed radishes first they will churn up the first few inches of soil for the carrots to grow. The radishes get picked far before the carrots come into action.
I harvested all straight carrots last year so I’m doing the opposite of what’s recommended this year. I do want to harvest some “comedy shaped veggies”. It won’t affect the taste but give something for our family to laugh about during the harvest season later in the year. As much as it’s hard work sometimes, gardening should also be fun!
😂😊😉
My grandkids get excited with the funny animal shaped carrots. They're disappointed with the straight ones.
Absolutely - no harm is a few odd-shaped roots - it only adds to the experience! :-)
I love that idea 😁
Homegrown carrots taste so much better than store bought ones.
Growing them in a container well above ground level has given me the best success so far
Right! Supermarket carrots have no flavour. Home grown ones tastes even better after a winter freeze.
Shop bought organic, beauties, but that’s it. Tasteless, slight perfumed, chemical smell. Grow your own from now on.
Your passion and enthusiasm for gardening is so inspiring. Love it!
That wetting the drill and covering with dry soil tip is excellent. Thank you!
Omg growing carrots for the first time this year is one of my goals!
You will love it!
DO ITTTTT!
Yes Michelle - great stuff. Get sowing!
Michelle did you plant them? I'm growing them for the first time also. Sowed on March 14th, probably will be ready the end of May. So exciting to watch them grow.
@@renel7303 yeah I planted some last month and more a week or so ago. So far so good!
Very good teacher. My 4 year old absolutely loves Ben . We are doing home education, learning how to grow and live is my most important lesson ❤
It really is such an important life lesson. The best lesson in fact! Please say a warm, slightly muddy-handed hello to your four-year-old. :-)
@@GrowVeg Thank you so much Ben. Keep teaching us!
You know your carrots! Another great video. Very informative.
Thanks for the tips,I will show my carrot seeds for the first time
Last year I started growing veg in a small 1m x 1m raised bed. Since then I’ve built 3 more larger ones large pots and a greenhouse! Safe to say I’m hooked! I have to stop myself going to the garden centre whenever possible! 😂 Thanks for the great content!!
feel that! altho we had somewhat of a monsun last year and our harvest was ONE (too early) tomatoe, three green bell peppers (start of october), actually quite a few cucumbers and as many potatoes as I planted - the rest rotted. I found a even bigger, extern garden for us and all my "pocket money" sinks into it! But I am confident to say that next year I will start of my seeds in a proper underground greenhouse!
Nice work - always great to expand!
I have a greenhouse too. It does make the trip to the nursery more guilt-ridden. LOL.
"Oh, I should have grown some of that".
In the cart it goes!
This year I’m starting for the the 1st time with 4 raised garden beds and quite a few pots around them 😂
Thank you
Thanks for the storage comment…that,s how I store beetroot…but I didn,t know you could store carrots that way😀😀😀jinxy
Great advice! Thank you. Have you ever tried to mix carrots with onions in the bed? They shall protect each other from their special flies.
I love carrots in patties with oats. Or mixed with zucchini some flour, egg and spices they make great "Rösti" (= similar to hash brown?). Some sour cream on top and it's a taste of summer garden. 😊
I still had some fresh carrots in January on my little balcony. That was great.
How wonderful to have fresh carrots in January. :-) I have grown onions with carrots before, to help mask the smell of each other's pests. But I think the main advantage in doing this is that the different-shaped leave confuse the flies, making it harder for them to hone in their preferred plant.
Howdy Ben!🖐 I was afraid to try growing carrots for a long time because of all the horror stories; however, when I jumped in and went for it, I found growing carrots to be easy and fun!😀
Hopefully you gave your garden mulch maker and supervisior a carrot to.🙂
I enjoy carrots roasted and in salads; however, every now and then I enjoy making them into a treat...carrot and raisin salad!🤤
Already looking forward to the next video!🖐
Thanks Valorie. They are really satisfying to grow. Pulling them up to harvest is the best bit!
Ha! Yes, I was laughing at the little garden foreman making sure the job was being done properly. That's what my dog does, and then once the job is done he'll go and sit all over it for the day.
I've been following you for years. You are my #1 resource for staying inspired and helping me teach 426 students about gardening! Thank you for your fantastic videos.
Oh wow, that's quite an honour - thank you!
Like the use of potting compost in the drills 😎
Pixilation on the carrots made my day
Carrot cake 🥰
Yum!
What a great introduction, carrots really can be a wonderful crop if you know what to do! I worked on a farm that considered carrots (we did a small test crop in a 40 square foot area). We read a lot of research beforehand indicating that seeds can be planted incredibly close together and still grow to maturity. Our variety grew to be 1/2 of an inch in diameter, and the seeds could be planted exactly that far apart. It was incredible, when the tops of the carrots showed through the dirt they were perfectly lined up with their neighbors (we used a small wooden box with 1/2 inch spaced holes to get the seeds in exactly the right spots quickly, as the area was so large for hand planting). It was a really exciting harvest, I never would have expected the carrots to grow that large while touching, but the ones that we grew further apart were the exact same size, it was truly uncanny. The farm ended up closing the next year because the owner wanted to move, but the carrot trick rests in the back of my mind for when I have enough space to grow root vegetables again.
That's really useful information to share - thank you! :-)
What a lovely video! I have a method for warming soil, killing the weeds, and helping the carrots germinate. I put a piece of stiff, clear polycarbonate roofing material over the bed for a week to warm the soil, and it gets so hot under that the weeds just die. Then I also water my trench before sowing, then cover the seeds, and finally put the polycarbonate on top of the bed. This holds the seed in, prevents birds and mice from eating them, gives all the warmth and light necessary for germinating, and gives me a clear view of when the seeds sprout. then I put brick alongside and raise the polycarbonate up to protect the seeds until they're strong enough to fend for themselves. It works beautifully! I love your videos, thank you so much for taking the time to teach, especially in these really frightening times of food shortages!
What an ingenious method - I love it! A fantastic case of creative thinking, thank you.
I use irt 100 plastic mulch.
My puppy has a carrot every day 🥰
Must be a very healthy puppy. :-)
I'm a new subscriber to your Channel. And I've enjoyed watching your videos. With the cost of food soaring this year, I'm going to try to grow some of my own veggies. I'm going to take it slow and not overdo it. But I appreciate all of your content to give me the encouragement to give this a go. Keep the great videos coming.🥕🥕🥕
Thanks for watching. Growing some of your own food is so empowering - and it tastes so much better!
I literally just sewed a batch of carrots today... time to see if I did things right :))
Carrot, orange and ginger soup, my favourite. Thanks for the tips, growing carrots in grow bags for the first time this year, fingers crossed.
Ohh that sounds good. Can you share the recipe ?
@@toniedalton5448 Hi Tonie, don't really have a set recipe as I make by taste.
Just add enough vegetable stock and orange juice to cover and simmer the carrots until tender, puree and add as much grated ginger or ground ginger as you want.
Hope that helps! 😀
What a fantastic soup combination. :-)
Thank you for this insightful video on carrots! My grandmother used to sow carrots together with radishes. Rashishes germinate quickly and mark the row and are ready for harvest when the carrots show their leaves.
I did not know that the carrot root fly does not fly higher than a foot above the ground. Then I will have no problems on my balcony 😅. I read in a German book on seed saving that an mixed culture with subterranean clover will repel the root fly. I will try it out this year...
Yes, the carrot flies aren't the best fliers - though the wind can sometimes blow them off course. Good luck with this season's crop of carrots.
Curried cream of carrot soup and roasted carrots and other root vegetables in maple syrup ...X
Yum!
My daughters loved the carrots we managed to grow last season. More this season are definitely in the plan. Peeled and boiled with some butter and salt takes me back to grandmas kitchen. It’s our favorite way to eat them fresh from the garden.
Sometimes the simplest ways like you described are hands-down the best.
“Comedy shaped carrots!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much for the detailed growing methods. I haven't found anyone that explains everything. I'm a new subscriber and a new gardener and you just don't know how your video is helping me. Much appreciated.
So pleased Jenn. Thanks very much for subscribing too. :-)
Splendid! Just what I needed! Thank you!
Loved the advice on the carrot root fly! 🙏🌱
Love watching your videos- thank you for sharing
Fabulous-thanks
This helps a ton! thanks
Always such fun, nice videos packed with information, straight to the point and easy to understand.
First, I love all your videos and with your help I've learned so much about growing vegetables. The only problem is that my garden keeps getting bigger and bigger 😬 About slugs.... I deeply HATE them! Since we eat a lot eggs I started saving the eggshells. I wash first than bake them at 325F for 25/30 minutes. Let it cool down. Break into small pieces then sprinkle all over my carrots and salad greens when they are still small. The sharp edges of the eggshells cuts the slugs like a blade and they die! One would called it horrible I call it don't mess with my garden! 🤭Thank you and please don't ever stop making videos!!!
Great that you find that works. I may have to re-try this myself!
💜💜💜 thank you 😊
Well done. Now I'm carrot hungry!
Great advice, Ben. I’m off to check my seed packets right now.
Great advice Ben, thank you 😊
I Always have good luck with carrots and parsnips!
I love to eat them roasted🤩🥕
Love this! My carrots last year did NOT do well!!
Hopefully better luck this time round Hannah.

Thank you for the seed sand mix method, last year I had the worst trouble with this!
Great. Idea!
Excellent video, thank you for the great information!
Thank you! My cousin makes the best carrot souffle from her homegrown carrots. This year will be my first attempt at growing them.
Good luck with them Ann. I'm sure you'll succeed.
Those are very nice watering cans you use.

Great video! Your Carrots look beautiful and delicious. Can't wait to harvest mine soon! 💚🌱
Great job! This video filled with a wealth of information. This is perfect timing as my carrot seeds just arrived in the mail.
New subscriber from Virginia, US. Very thorough video. You have encouraged me to try out carrots this year. I also enjoyed your sweet potato slips video, 1st year trying those as well. Good day!
Thanks so much for the sub, that's hugely appreciated! Delighted you'll be trying carrots this year.
First time for carrots also for me this year, thank you for the hint and tips 👍
Cracking information.
Perfect timing.
Thanks for the good video I just set out my carrots
I love carrots in salad. Fresh and sweet 😋
I bought carrot seeds today before discovering your video. I grow a lot of container crops. Looks like fun to try this year.
Sowed carrot seeds for the first time this year, in a seed tray, they will have to be transplanted - I’ll prepare myself for some comedy shaped carrots!!
I did that last spring - transplanted a few - and still got a decent crop. Worth a try - but expect a few comedy roots!
Im going to do just that 👍🏼
Brilliant video very informative 👏
"Not the smartest tool in the box " 😁👌🏻 ... demystifying the carrot root fly MO ... I'm definitely planting carrots this year .. thank you for your excellent channel 🌱✊🏻👌🏻
Great stuff! Thanks for watching. :-)
I'll have to say that I didn't even really think about growing carrots this morning.
But yet you had me at every moment and I'm watching the thing again because I think I might have missed a little bit. It is one of the most excellent videos on UA-cam I have ever watched. And I have a UA-cam channel well a couple of UA-cam channels a lot of UA-cam videos. But you just made these carrots special and you did such a wonderful job I think I might even try growing carrots. My husband is not going to be fond of you LOL
That's really great to hear - I'm so pleased you're inspired to try growing carrots. The taste alone will make it worthwhile I promise!

my dog loves carrots. good for them too
Love your sense of humor
Thanks so much. :-)
My carrots last year were dire - so few and very small. I'm planning to grow them this year and this video has given me the encouragement. Thank you, Ben.
That's great to here!
I love your videos! Super helpful! You've confirmed my suspicions that our soil was too compact & heavy this year. My little carrots didn't do much
Just the job,👍Hope mine grow this time.🤔
I already got my carrots 🥕 in the ground
Our carrots rarely make it past the rinsing and container of hummus. Great video! Thank you.
I love your enthusiasm.I'm hooked and subscribed!!!
Welcome - thanks for the sub!
Discovered carrot tops make a nice soup.
What a great idea.
lovely
Loving this channel...going to be following your advice this season....keep up the good work..thanks.
Cheers Chris. Enjoy the growing season!
I am lucky here in Melbourne. I can grow carrots all year. Biggest problem I have is getting them started. They are easily the hardest seed to do so. Been using the cardboard trick, leaving cardboard over the seeded area to keep it moist.
An older gent Homegrownveg shows how to germ carrots. It has not failed my last 2 yrs. Prick out on wet tissue in small takeaway lid box, voila tiny roots space n plant. His names Jim a lovely channel.
This was absolutely fantastic (as are most of your tutorials BTW)! You've converted me into being a carrot fan! :) After a few failures, I'm going to try growing in pots this year.
That's music to my ears - so pleased you're ready to try them. :-)
Hello friend, I am from Lexington, Kentucky I saw a video of you in my Google recommendations and I figured you have UA-cam channel so I am here I just subscribed and I am watching this carrot videos and I just realized I never grow carrots so I am learning watching your videos.
