Use a bar to open up the soil and fill with compost and sow like I do and you will be suprised with the outcome.

Oh my word am I glad I found you. I’ve just recently taken over an allotment and literally never grown a vegetable in my life but I’m wanting to start. I’ve just put some potatoes and onions in and my next job was to sow the parsnips. I absolutely love this way of doing it so I’m going to give it a go. When I’ve got a few spare hours I’ll also watch your other videos as I’m particularly interested in The raised bed one as I have a rod in my back so it’s hard bending over as such to plant. Thank you.

I need to learn and copy this method for next year. Thank you Terry!
When I first started planting/sowing before my first video was ever done I really struggled to get seeds to germinate directly into the ground so I started doing things in a way that I was successful, this should be an improvement on last year so the roots can stay in the ground right up to this time next year. It's all in the preparation of the layers before sowing.
🥕Happy gardening, Terry King.
Oh yeah parsnips are grown just like carrots. Great to know, they look the same . Greatly planned ,awaiting a good crop.
Cheers Lillian, hopefully they will be so much better outside in their new beds.
🥕Happy gardening, Terry King.
I never had much luck with parsnips, but I always got a few. One year I saved some seeds from one I allowed to flower thinking they may do better. After planting my rows there was nothing as usual so I gave up. Later on I took the last seeds I had and just tossed them on the ground to dump them, they grew ^^. So now my preferred method is throwing a clump of seeds on the ground and raking them around a bit!
Fresh seed every year for me now and this way works for me. Keep trying my friend, stay safe and healthy.

I hope the (parsnip) seeds germinate well for you. Regarding snipping them off; Be careful, I am not sure how much your trust me but I can assure I tried it with carrots a couple of years ago and the bloody root sent up another set of leaves a few weeks later, ultimately resulting in two carrots sharing the same space. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other. I now prefer to hold one root firmly in place whilst pulling out the spare root. I'll be watching as ever my friend. 🍺
Funny you should say that as I snipped the last few off in my outside beds and in several places I had two carrots growing William so that's worth knowing, will think about how I approach this now.

I've grown my Parsnips this year in 9 brown recycling bins, bottoms cut out, sat on 1.6ft of sand filled with sand cored out and hey ho.. had a disapointing germination in a few but others look ok.
Next year I'm going to make araised bed like what you have ttere but cover with a domed netting coverred with a roll on/off clear cover - uncover for the rain and cover when necesery...
Fingers ccrossed..
Hello Glyn, thank you for sharing your experiences and once the carrots are established it's best not let too much rain get to them as they will split. I have had the Carrot-Willow Aphid spreading the Motley Dwarf virus (did videos on this)which made a mess of three beds of carrots so will be netting fully with envio mesh to stop the carrot fly and the Aphids.

Hi Terry, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them. I would like to ask about your raised beds. My wife had a knee injury a little while ago and as a result, now finds it difficult to kneel down. The upshot is I’ve been tasked with constructing some raised beds so she can continue to garden in them rather in the ground. Do you have any tips or even a video (I looked but couldn’t see one on your channel) on how you constructed yours? One of the main things I’d like to know is how deep your soil is in them and how you support the soil and allow for drainage. I presume the soil is not all the way to the ground? Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks. (Now subscribed) 😀
Edit: I wrote the above before getting to the end of your video then lo and behold a link to the very subject of building one of your beds popped up at the end. I’ll go watch that now! Many thanks. 👍🏻
Hello Jon, I haven't regretted building my raised beds and I want to protect my body and mind before age gets to me. I am lucky enough to be able to collect Compost that the Cannabis growers fly tip and I use woodchips in the paths which I harvest after 3 years and I collect around 20 one ton bags of Autumn leaves which helps with my Compost from the bin to fill my beds. If you watch my first video you will see a different allotment and those beds were too small after all these items and the manure have been added. I am finding 4 pallet collars high beds is ideal and 3 scaffolding planks high for my main beds, yes soil and all the organic materials are from top to bottom and not a penny spent filling them. I butpy on average 6 bags of Compost a year for potting up and my seeds. Hope that helps and my playlist is full of useful information. I can help by putting a playlist on the end screen to help on a certain subject.

First year 7 years ago great success with parsnips…after that never again….I’ve never chatted them which I think I should …love your set up but I’ve neither the time or space..
Never give up Darren.
Happy gardening, Terry King.
So sieved the compost/sand together …what I didn’t relize until lately was you sow the carrots and thin out,,,I was sowing then disturbing them when replanting into sieved pot..hence disturbing the tap root…hoping it works as used 30ltr pots
Try different ways so you can find something that suits you.

Very talented mr King, how long have you been using these innovative methods of gardening?
I have been growing the parsnips and carrots in the raised pallet collar beds for about 5 years after issues with germination and pests, this is all new this year and I now have them 4 high. I do get some quality roots, not so much quantity but they store well when left in over the winter months Billy. I am well known for my long parsnips and carrots.

How many bottles of whatever that is did you have to drink to get enough for all those boxes? I'm guessing they are mainly sand filled. i'll checkout your other videos for info. Look they they will grow giants!

Great video again Terry. Can I ask do you bore the holes under the yogurt pots ?
And also what size are the yogurt pots please.
The pots are 450g and 1 litre bottles Bill. I use the crow bar to create a hole to the bottom of the box and fill with dry coco coir, that will draw moisture from the soil and then I sow about a week later.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Thanks for the Advice sir. I will be looking to grow in some plastic tote boxes this season i have commented on one of your old posts in allotment life Facebook group 👍
Hello Terry. Fab video. I was wondering how deep the yoghurt pot goes down? Do you use the full pot or is it just an inch or so? 🥕
Yes Just an inch or two and no more, enough to hold the fruit bottles.
Happy gardening, Terry.
Thanks for the video enjoyed looking at you're setup. Still to cold here in Alberta Canada outside but warming up eventually. My question I would like to ask is what do you fill the hole up with made with the crow bar? When we lived in the UK in Sunderland, I worked at a local colliery. The lads there where avid gardeners most doing show vegetables. Two tips I got from them was for carrots they used two half of 4 inch pipe tied together to allow them to keep the roots from being damaged when show time came around. They just untied the pipe and all the dirt fell away from the veg. The growing medium was very fine tilth with a lot of sand mixed in maki g it easy for the carrot to grow down as they don't like hard soil. They also took a burlap sack or hessian filled it with a mix of cow and horse manure and dangled it in a rain barrel to make liquid feed. They each had their own little ways to grow to try and beat out the competition. It sometime got nasty if one grower thought the other had the edge on him and night raids would happen to spoil crops. Very competitive veg growing it seems. I remember after one event there where lots of really good veg just tossed away after the shows. We would collect it for dinners and soups. Crazy waste when you think about it. Well thanks again for taking the time to make these videos. Hopefully the lockdown won't last to much longer. Life may not be the same again after this, we aren't suffering the strictness you are we can come and go almost as normal here. My brother in Middlesbrough like you is almost house bound but he's just turned 77 and is quite fearful of getting sick. God bless you and your family..
I fill mine with coco coir that I find dumped by the Cannabis growers in lanes, I do sieve it to remove the roots, let me look back for the video which shows me filling them.

Trying to hard to reach the light they overextended themselves. Will have to try again damn it.

Terry King's Allotment Gardening On A Budget Thanks Terry I’ll remember for the next batch. God bless brother.
Hi Terry, I've got carrots growing in mini greenhouses like you've shown and now the leaves are growing quite well and starting to fill out in the bottles. I'm wondering at what point do you remove the bottle tops when you grow yours? I don't want to remove them too soon an risk the dreaded carrot fly getting at them but I also don't want to stunt their growth either. Cheers.
I use the bottle tops just to help with moisture retention and the cold winds getting to them so at this time of the year 25mm to 50mm would be ideal to give them some fresh air, you can easily cock them in the heat of the day.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
I've just found your site and it looks just right for me . I've been reading about the advantages of raised beds which I'm just starting, but haven't seen any as raised as yours, is there a reason or just a convenient height. I have subscribed and will be following. Many thanks.
If you look at my first video in my playlist it will give you an idea of the amount of quality soil I have and I have added 15,000ltrs of cannabis Compost that I find fly tipped on the side of the road ( see playlist under live videos) so two high with the scaffolding planks was because I had plenty of materials plus what I added extra in the layers, check my playlist for the raised bed builds and how to fill them for free. I am also feeling the benefits of the height and width for easy planting. The pallet collar raised beds were free and I had materials to fill them so 4 high was convenient. Filling them is the biggest cost, all the beds were built for around £270 , £200 for the scaffolding planks and screws, hand saw etc. Please ask as many questions as you look through my recent videos David and the last 6 months covers the builds, rain stopped play many times.....lol.

Hi, i see you put 3 seeds in a pot would this be normal or should I try one per pot, I’ve never been successful with parsnips - I don’t understand when you say cut them down. Thanks
You need to buy fresh seed each season, three seeds per pot or station to ensure one germinates. If more than one grows the weakest needs to be cut off below ground level with sharp snips, be careful when doing this. you should then end up with one at each pot.
Happy gardening, Terry King.
Where do you get you coir compost or what could I use instead
I get all my compost unscrupulously dumped by the Cannabis growers Jenny, any finely sifted compost will do, better to use some that has already been used so all the nutrients have been used.

a few of your videos have appeared in the recommended box and I'm enjoying your channel, out of curiosity how soon will your parsnips/ carrots come through with this bottle method? I've never had much luck with parsnips so might give it a try on the new allotment this year :)
Just depends on the weather Nathan and always use new Parsnip seeds or chit the old parsnips seeds on tissue first, as soon as the tail comes out plant them. Will be updating on there progress in future videos. Lots of information in my playlists.

Do you sieve the soil for parsnip or are they filled with fresh bought compost
The Coco Coir is sifted, but the seed compost that I put on top to germinate the seeds isn't.
Happy gardening, Terry King.
Hi Terry, nice video. Will the carrots and parsnips in those beds be grown for showing? And when you say they take care of themselves, will that compost retain enough moisture without you watering them or will you still need to water? I had a disaster with carrots last year so I'm trying to make sure I get it right this year! All the best, Robert.
The carrots do well for showing Robert, but the parsnips wouldn't make the grade in a show. If you look back on how I fill the pallet collars you will get a good idea. I will keep the top moist and once established and the bottles come off and yes they should look after themselves, the tap root should be far enough down to start feeding on the manure layer. Hope that helps, check my playlist and ask more questions if needed.

How far into the ground are the yogurt pots? Have you cut them to an inch or two or just cut the bottom off, and when do you remove them?
Just over an inch from the top of the yogurt pot, enough to hold the bottles and when they are established enough to remove them without disturbing the root of the carrots and parsnips, but they are fine left on until harvest.

Wow those raised beds are really deep, how high are they? My first we're probably only 6-8 inches, then I used decking (expensive) so maybe 14-16 inches high. I have some wood to make the nest ones at least 18 inches high this time but using any bought soil or compost is very expensiv so I've been trying to make compost.
They are 4 pallet collars high so about 4 foot a really good height to work on, but i did have plenty of soil, organic materials and compost to fill them.

@@terrykingsallotmentgardening Thats Terry, I was thinking that it must make life easier to work on them, all that bending down and kneeling is murder ha ha. Cheers and looking forward to spring!
@@JagdgeschwaderX it does makes all the difference.
Do you make a hole in the cups, thank you
They are just the tops off large yogurt pots which fit the 1 litre bottles nicely to create a mini greenhouse to help with germination.

Thank you so very much for your reply
I am definitely going to have a bash
@charlottecrawford1243 the extra effort will pay dividends Charlotte and great satisfaction when you pull quality roots out. Just remember roots don't like manure so ensure the bed you use hasn't had anything rich in a couple of years or you will end up with lots of vegetables looking like octopuses......🤣.
Hi, I'm new to growing veg. This is the first time i'll be growing parsnip. Whats with the yogurt pots? Are they full pots, or just the rims or what? many thanks. I was told to grow them in toilet roll tubes? I have sown some and they have started to sprout. many thanks in advance, i really liked the video :)
Hello Scott, I used kitchen rolls because the tap root grows very quickly up to 8 inches with the seedlings having its first two leaves. So once they show get them in the ground. I now use this method and the yogurt pot are use for collars and so I know where the seeds are so they are only an inch and a bit let's say 30mm and the hold the bottle tops in place until they are established, most of my regular viewers have seen this recycled items before but wasn't expecting this video to do so well so maybe should have said a little bit more about it, hope you stay with me as I garden on a Budget and have lots of interesting things to watch in my playlist especially home made liquid plant foods and Compost mixes. Please ask any questions anytime.

I have tried growing parsnips, however have problems with germination using fresh seeds. Normally plant in situ fail to grow so this year the outside ones have failed yet again. Trying to grow in the greenhouse still no sign have been planted about 6weeks now. They seem to take forever at the best of times cannot think what I am doing wrong.
Yes parsnips do take a long time to germinate, mine have now been thinned out day 21, video up Wednesday night at 8pm UK time. I had lots of issues so started chitting them on tissue and as soon as the tail comes out they must be planted either directly into your soil or into kitchen rolls as the tap roots grow very quickly, first two leaves they must be planted, I use a 5ft crow bar to make a long hole for them so the tap root has no resistance so chitting them is your best option. Have you watched how I fill and prepare my pallet collars beds ready for the parsnips and carrots, worth a look if you haven't.

Terry what are the white pots
Hello Sam, they are yogurt pot tops which I place my plastic bottles to act as mini greenhouses, new video up Monday night which will explain everything.

@@terrykingsallotmentgardening thank you Terry very helpful look forward to video on Mon have a lovely easter
Can I ask what are the pots you are putting the parsnip seeds into.
Thank you
450g yogurt pots and 1ltr fruit juice bottles fit nicely to create a mini greenhouse.

Don't get the ones with the cardboard around the outside Andrew.
Thank you Terry do you grow the parsnips in the pots with the bottoms cut off I have pot noodle pots and wondered if I should cut the bottoms off of those.
Thank you again I am only able to grow in a 6x3 foot veg bed with a cloche which I made myself considering I don't have a garden but grow at the side of my balcony.
@andrewwestern7622 the main reason for the pots is to be able to add the plastic bottles to help with germination so yes your pots would be ideal for your growing spaces, any bottle would do.
What coco coir product do you use

That's brilliant. Do I put an add in the local paper as I could do with some of that lol
When the carrots are growing how do you water them? Do you water just around the plant or predominately water the surrounding soil so the carrot needs to "look" for water. Some good ideas in the video.
Hello Brian, the seedlings are now up and ready for thinning video up next Wednesday night at 8pm and the plastic bottles will come off when the seedlings get a little bigger and before I remove them they will get a good water and that is possibly the last watering I give them because the tap root should be about 6 to 8 inches long on the carrots and 12 to 18 inches long on the parsnips and well on there way to reaching down for the manure which will keep them going until they are harvested and the last bay of carrots should still be there this time next year and hopefully the last of the parsnips as well. Hope that helps.

I'm DOWNUNDER..just asking why your farm is called an allotment 🤔🤔🇦🇺
Hello Paul, its similar to community gardens, but we have these spaces for as long as we want as long as we keep them in good order. Allotments are normally on a site with many others the same and don't cost alot of money per year my allotment costs £34 a year. Google Allotments for more information. If you can imagine a field or Homestead with lots of fences of growing spaces this is how we can grow extra food if we have little space at home.

it means the plot holder is "alloted" (given a piece) of land in the rented garden

Though I have confidence in the result, that's a lot of plastic 🙂
Hello George, while plastic is still used as packaging then I will try and reuse repurpose it as many times as I can and yes I could do this without the yogurt pots and fruit juice bottles, but I wouldn't get the quality if I planted directly into the ground just randomly, all the seeds have germinated and I will be showing how I thin them out on Wednesday's episode at 8pm UK time. Thank you for taking the time to comment I do really appreciate it.

This is a very poor video, I learned nothing and it only left me with questions.
I can't please everyone, but this video has helped lots of other gardener's who struggle to grow carrots and parsnips.

@@terrykingsallotmentgardening How has it helped anyone?
@@lksf9820 preparation is key and giving the roots plenty of space to grow and thinning to one per station to get the best from them. I still have plenty of both in the ground to last me till April.

Thank you Beverley.
