  • The single most important maintenance procedure of a knife is regular sharpening. Marttiini sharpening stone, made of phyllite, is a traditional and efficient way to sharpen a knife.
The main minerals in this sharpening stone are quartz, feldspar and mica. The sharpener also includes a groove for sharpening hooks.

I sharpen mine similarly on a large bench stone, then I put a (horror) a micro bevel with a ceramic rod, works great for me, and toughens the cutting edge a bit and no longer get micro chipping (when using on curved hardwood)

My father passed away a few years back I recently found quite a few of his knives, he held Janne Marttiini in high regard and am wondering if I can send them to you folks to fix them up on a best effort basis. Is this possible?

I dont m kw if they answered , but I think you'd get great peace and connection with the blades like your father had. I knkw every scratch on my knives, the feel of them in my hand , and have a deep emotional tie to the ones I actually use. You'd love the feeling of doing ut yourself , it may take awhile , as you'd have to go slow and learn as you go, but that would only deepen the bond. I'd also suggest looking each one up, as you may not want to restore it, the value may rest in staying as is, so good luck and I hope you've found what you need by now lol.

I have been using this exact stone the way it demonstrates in the video, same motion for sharpening the knife also but i find that all it does is make my knife duller. Is there any reason for this?

I just ordered mine and after a few tries, I've noticed the same result. Not sure if I'm using it properly but the stone seems to take the most sharpest edge away

Hi! Thank you for both for your questions, we're happy to help you! We'd say that you could first ensure that the following is done correctly. When using the sharpening stone, it's important to maintain the same sharpening angle during the whole sharpening process. In the end, the sharpening is finalized with removing the burr from the tip of the blade (burr is the deformation that forms when sharpening the blade). Hope this helps! You can find more instructions for sharpening on our website: www.marttiini.fi/Instructionsandtips/Sharpen-regularly

Sharpening is not an easy process! It's easier on a "sncandinavian" grind like that knife in the video but it doesn't mean it's easy.
Try to practice on a cheap knife that you don't mind damaging, That's the best way to learn!
Keep in mind that you pretty much have to eyeball a very exact angle and stay very consistent during the entire process.
Be careful and good luck sharpening :)

This has already been answered but heres my two cents. The factory edge is polished to a mirror finish which gives it razor like sharpness. The stone marttiini sells is excellent stone but its somewhere around 1000-1200 grit in my experience. It's for a edge maintaining or finishing. If you have let your edge go you want to first use more coarse stone preferably 400 or even 200 grit. Even if you did the sharpening well you still need to use strop to polish the edge to get that razor edge back. Only leather can do that. Then again if your edge doesn't bite swiftly to your nail after sharpening you are doing something wrong.

I'd like to add for newbies to get a strop ( piece of leather glued to a 2x4, apply some knife compound ( very cheap, redily available online) and strop your knife after grinding on the sharpening stone. It will fine tune it and the edges with it.
