    Today we are looking at the Spinnaker Hull California. A new release by Spinnaker. The original hull was released a year ago, and immediately drew comparisons to the Panerai Radiomir. This year Spinnaker has doubled down on that by releasing a California Dial Edition.
    This 42mm watch comes with a very iconic looking cushion case. Utilizes a Seiko NH35A movement, and Sapphire coated mineral crystal. model SP-5071-02
    Discount Code: SHANE20
    In the past, the discount code was just that, a discount code. In the last month, Spinnaker has now tied it into an affiliate program. So now I would make a small commission off any sale in addition to the discount you receive.

    Great review. Thanks for clearing up the height, been really scratching my head over that one hearing both 12 and 15mm being thrown around. Thanks for putting up the picture of the California burrito and making me even more homesick. You can hardly find tortilla chips anywhere around here, and the closest Mexican restaurant is two hours away, and is run and run by a nice guy from Wisconsin.

      Sorry, how hard is it to find salsa or an avocado?
      Just the other day I caught my brother on facebook. He now lives in North Carolina. He was pleading with a local Mexican restaurant to learn how to make Carne Asada and Rolled Tacos.

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch 5 років тому

      @@RelativeTime The salsa that I've found here is on par with something like Pace Picante Sauce, so not great. I'd make my own, but Jalapenos are really hard to find. Avacados are pretty readily available though, so Guacamole doable. Beef is really expensive here, and mostly sold thin sliced, as that's most often how it's eaten, I think because it makes it go further. A steak or a roast is pretty darn expensive, so making carne asada or even getting some sort of pork roast to try to make carnitas is cost prohibitive. The closest we get on a regular basis is making "taco rice," Basically put seasoned ground beef, cheese, avocados, tomatoes, lettuce and salsa on top of white sticky rice. It;s actually a fairly common dish here, I have no idea where it came from, but it's pretty good.

    Personally I think Rolex homage watches are overdone.. and 100m water proof is perfect “life proof”

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +2

      That's the good and bad of being so iconic. They sort of defined the segment and it's what people come to expect in a diver. I have a Phoibos Great Wall coming, and I'm curious what people will think of the design. It's different, but in no way can it be considered a Rolex Homage.

    • @orenovadia6590

      Relative Time any non homage watch, in my opinion is better.. it’s a unique design and even as a symbol it makes more of a statement, a Rolex homage.. makes no statement other then I can’t afford a Rolex.. and I’m sure we will love your review

      @@orenovadia6590 That is true. Although I feel for some microbrand designers. Make something with safe traditional design and you risk being called an homage. Make something completely original and you risk being called crazy. Kind of a tight rope.

      Relative Time sure but even then, look at invicta the prodviver gets called a rip-off in one end, but nocked for what is original
      On it, display case back, the wing counter balance AND the engraving on the side of the case. All distinctly non Rolex .. yet somehow bad

    The best that can be said about that caseback is that at least you don't have to look at it, but otherwise there's much more to like than dislike. It does come across as very big on the wrist and in my opinion would be improved if shrunk somewhat, but it's still a thumbs up from over here.

    Great video as always mate. Said it before Spinnaker make some very interesting watches. I personally don't like numerals on a dial and unfortunately a mix of the two makes me even less tempted. Heaven 😎
      It's a carne asada Burrito. Which is one of the reasons it's hard to find. Not too many places do Carne Asada like So Cal. So small chunks of marinated flank steak. Grilled on a flat top to give it a little bit of a crsip edge to it. Then mixed in the Burrito with cheese and sour creme. Sometimes avocado and Guac. But what makes it a California Buritto is they add french fries (sometimes crispy potatoes) in it. Sounds strange, but so good. Probably not good for you though...

      Spinnaker is an micro-brand and they are connected to AVI-8. Descent quality and interesting designs. They do get some flak online, mostly because they release something new about every month, and most are dive-style watches not true divers.
      Yet when they do they send review samples to a lot of people. So for a week or two almost every channel will be reviewing the same watch. So some people just get bored with them. But the good side is that if your interested in the watch, you have a lot of information to on it.

      Relative Time off the top of my head, there’s a restaurant with several locations in the area that has them called Acambaro There’s another place in the nearby city of Springfield called Purple Burrito that also sells them.
      All that said, it’s been years since I ordered one so I can’t recall what all is in them but I do remember potatoes in some capacity if I remember correctly.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      @@IansModRite They could be legit then. I've seen some places call them that, but are more "California inspired" Real one should be thin chunks of carne asada, ton of cheese, and some sour creme. Occasionally guacamole, but it has to have either fried potatoes or french fries. usually french fries.

    • @IansModRite
      @IansModRite 5 років тому

      Relative Time well if I remember correctly, that’s exactly what’s in the California burrito at Purple Burrito, French fries and all!
      Now that I think about it, one of the taco shop owners in my small town is from SoCal and I think he does a California burrito as well.
      FYI, I really want a burrito now 🤣
      Sidenote for context, the area I live in has a very large Hispanic population so in my town of less than 10,000 we have 2 Taquerias, 3 (maybe 4) sit down Mexican restaurants and, 4 Taco trucks.

    A great review. Personally not for me, not a fan of the California Dial or the dial texture. Nothing wrong with the quality, but they should use strait sapphire, they use it on other models. Spinnaker makes some nice watches. I personally like the currant Dumas, the 1970s Seamaster Inspired Diver that came out earlier this year.
    Are you going to be doing a review of your Black and Blue Turtle? Would be nice to get your view on what a consider a great diver.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +1

      The Dumas does look nice. I was interested in that one before. Although I can't help but laugh at the name. There was a really old tv ad for A&W rootbeer that was rather funny.
      But the Turtle. Yes I will be reviewing, just don't know when. I really do like it, it's definitely a keeper. I had doubts about it's size. But the case on the turtle really does wear small and is very comfortable. It also looks great in photos and video. I had to choose between it or the Hamilton Khaki King last week. But since I've done a number of divers, and have more divers coming. I went with the Khaki King.
      My biggest question with it is if it's worth buying Seiko Turtles and Samurai when you look at what you can get from Helm and Phoibos for a similar price.
      Right now It's actually the top of my list for watches I've bought. But whenever anyone sends me anything it gets bumped back. Just a matter of courtesy regardless of if I get to keep it, or just on loan. And I've have a number of things heading my way right now. Takes me almost a while to put these together, and I'll be gone a week in June. So right now I'm thinking first few weeks in July.

    • @surfitli
      @surfitli 5 років тому

      Relative Time you brought up a great point. Is the Seiko Turtle and Samuri worth it when there are more affordable divers that out spec them on paper. I actually have experience with all 3 brands. Helms are great values, almost a steal for what they go far considering the quality and features but they are not a aviable for purchase. They sell out quick.
      Philobus makes some nice watches, I’m actually expecting my Great Wall to come tomorrow. I also have a Reef Master witch a really like.
      Seiko makes some early great divers but they have to get there QC in line. Misaligned chapter rings are a huge problem. They also keep using Hardlex in the Midrange and no ceramic bezels until you get to the 1,000 Plus models. They seem to be more interested in moving upmarket, the Prospex LX Spring Drive Models look amazing but they are all over $5,000, puts them in Seamaster territory.however If you really like the Samurai or Turtle I don’t see a problem going for it, just make sure you check everything when you receive it.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +1

      It's a good question. One I might explore more in a video for itself. Spec to Spec it's hard to argue that they are, but as a collector it's a little different. Seiko is sort of the baseline most people judge everything else at at this price. So it gives you a good understanding of what to expect. Plus the designs are classic, and always well made. They also retain their value pretty well as everyone is always looking for a Seiko.
      Which Great wall did you get? Mine should be here today or tomorrow. Picking one was hard, the computer render doesn't look as good as the handful of pictures. Eventually decided on the Orange. With that design might as well have some fun, plus match my wife's Sea Nymph more.

      Unconventional hands for an unconventional dial. I like the cathedral hands on a diver. This is a personal thing, obviously, but the dial looks like burnt plastic to me.

      I could see that more with the black version.

      I almost typed it as Cali-4-nia. I have a diploma on my wall signed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. So I think I'm allowed. (He was still "The Governator" when I graduated.)

      I'm on their list of UA-cam Reviewers. Every once in a while they will email me and ask if I'm interested to see something.

    I had a mullet back in the day. We all did. Times were different, things have changed, so I can't buy this watch.

      It was the 80s, so mullet was ok. Although funny how a lot of the 80s tv shows are coming back as remakes. Hawaii 5-0, Magnum, Macgyver..

      Is it the California dial? Or the textured dial?

    Yea! another Spinnaker ad...California dial fail @ 6 o'clock.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      What specifically didn't you like about. The textured dial or the height?

    • @guidothekillerpimp
      @guidothekillerpimp 5 років тому +1

      It's a fail at a California dial there should be a dash at the 6 ..."_" not a "l".

      That is a really good point. I noticed that Boldr has a Cali dial on their new 2109 odyssey. They have the _ and even threw a date on top. Although, should you have a date on a California dial?

    Too big in all dimensions, even for you...

    • @RelativeTime

      It's a bit tall, but thats about it. Otherwise 42mm is larger, but not large. At least to me, and at least it's smaller then most Panerai.

    Loved the design so much but unfortunately it's too big and way too chunky for my small wrist
