    Dude honestly his reaction by saying I don’t wanna die and doing nothing is scary and is terrifyingly accurate to how disorienting hypoxia is, to the point in which you can’t even focus on the fact that you need to save your own life with a mask.

      Actually I think its just more like he was really confused about what the other guy was telling to him... first because its not a real situation (he was waiting for the other guy to do anything) also because he suddenly started talking much faster than before.... While Im totally agree on how hypoxia works on this video, probably that "dumb moment" could be beaten using basic orders, instead create a conversation / questions about "how you are not going to die" (that requires more proceses to be used) something like "put you mask on" would be working.
      I think a great part of the training for pilots or astronauts its to go deep into the subconscience about the risks, so if they get into this kind of trouble they will follow easier the procedure required motivated by that "fear"... Like make sure that something "disturbs" you that much that even half sleep or drunk you would be having it on mind all the time, what would be the difference on any situation like the one exposed on the video.

    As an airline pilot we would typically cruise between FL370 and FL390, and if one pilot had to leave the flight deck to use the bathroom, it was mandatory for the other pilot to put on the oxygen mask before they left. 12-20 seconds of useful consciousness doesn't leave much room for error when you're flying the plane.

      Lack of oxygen is an insanely fast and easy way to die. Because it's invisible, we can't really tell how much oxygen is in the air just by looking at it. There have been cave explorers, or maintenance workers die within seconds of entering an enclosed area that didn't have enough oxygen inside it.

      Reminds me of nitrogen narcosis in divers. They can't be reasoned with once they hit a certain point, it's like they're breathing 90% nitrous oxide and they're floating off on a cloud somewhere. Sometimes they'll beg for help in that same loopy, semi-conscious tone of voice but they're too intoxicated to follow commands. Very sad and scary.

    • @PBMS123
      @PBMS123 7 років тому +56

      Theres very compelling evidence (i really dont understand why it hasn't occurred yet it makes all the sense) for hypoxia to be used as the execution method. It truly is 120% humane. Before death you go into a heightened state of euphoria as your brain starves of oxygen, and floods it with endorphins in one final hoorah. Personally I don't agree with capital punishment, but if it has to occur, it should be humane.
      Isn't way to do this, is just to strap a mask to them, tie them down, and pump pure nitrogen in (or argon). A pure inert atmosphere will make you go hypoxic without any suffocation (it will if you use CO2 as CO2 is what causes your body to suffocate). A few porcine slaughter houses use nitrogen environment to kill the pigs. And you put them in front of a feeding trough, and just like this video, even when they fall down on the stomach from hypoxia, they'll try to get up again and keep eating, in this environment, you just end up not even wanting to save yourself, you just laugh and smile as the euphoria takes you away.

    Never had to deal with hypoxia, however, as a diver, you have to deal with with nitrogen narcosis which can have similar effects. When training for my advanced open water, the instructor took us all down to 115', and had one of those puzzles like you guys had. The goal was to get all 10 or so shapes into the toy. Everyone else fumbled around with some degree of success or another, until it came to me. All of my pieces kept floating away, so I eventually shoved the all back in the net bag, opened the toy, and shoved the entire thing into the toy. I was the only person to get a 10/10 on that exercise. The instructor said if I was lucid enough to problem solve like that with my first time being narc'd, I was good to go....

      That's the whole point. You're dying, but your brain doesn't know it, so it's just happily chugging along making lots of uncoordinated noise. Your body doesn't keep track of how much Oxygen is in your blood, tha'ts harder to detect. It measures dissolved CO2, because that's roughly equivalent to the last time you took a breath, and inert atmospheres don't occur often enough in isolation to be "visible" to evolution. As long as you can breathe something non-toxic that can dissolve CO2, your body won't care that it's running out of Oxygen, and will just run out of energy and die.
      Incidentally, that's why they say never to go inside of any kind of tank or sealed, unventilated vessel, especially septic tanks. They can fill up with CO2, a single breath of that will knock you out almost instantly. Any tank can fill with something that isn't Oxygen, and even pure Oxygen is dangerous. Just don't go in them without proper training and equipment.

This video gave me the experience of not only proving me wrong but in a way that fundamentally allowed me to understand how listening to reason before making drastic decisions is important, even if I don't necessarily agree at the moment

      @kahavelka 8 років тому

      yes it does

    • @kahavelka
      @kahavelka 8 років тому +5

      It does have a sensor for level of oxygen, and weirdly its setted as "main control"... there exist a state in your body where you have low lvls of oxygen so your body starts to breath more, yet this excess of breathing causes muscles to produce more of CO2. Which is paradoxical because CO2 is also a problem, but somehow the oxygen sensor has higher priority. Same with respirators in hospitals, If you put O2 mask for too long on person, he can literally stop breathing because body has so much oxygen that it thinks its OK to stop breathing.. Another beautiful example of this is poisoning from cyanide. The O2 sensor works by sensing ATP made by oxygen. This chain is stopped by cyanide (KCN) so your body thinks you dont breath. Which could lead to "over" breathing, but it mostly doesnt happend since you are dead from poison already

      This is what it's like to be addicted to opiates...
      I've been in recovery for almost a year, and even after all this time, it still gives me anxiety to remember what it was like at my peak usage. I wanted to stop, and even though I knew that my tolerance had gotten to a point where the line between an overdose and a satisfying dose was paper thin, I still wasn't able to stop without either another human intervening with Naloxone to revive me from an overdose, or without using Suboxone to prevent cravings and mitigate the effects of withdrawal.
      This video does a great job of illustrating how unseen factors can have so much control over a person's behavior that they can become incapable of saving themselves despite recognizing the fact that they are in mortal danger.

Had to sleep beside the back door during the winter with the door cracked. The freezing air was the only way I could breathe comfortably enough to fall asleep. That and I assume the cold helped the inflammation of my lungs. Had started getting an obvious blue tint to my lips and face and my mom rushed me to the doctor. Not sure what my o2 was at but it had to have been dangerously low for that to happen. After being on the oxygen for a while my extremities kinda locked up and I couldn't move well. They tell it to you clear as day, every single time, there's no way you wont understand it if you speak the language.
      ''Put your own mask on first, before helping others.'' the shorter the sentence, the easier it is to understand.
      If anything it just shows your parents trust their own lack of knowledge on the subject and situation, than trust the word of the people who have spent years refining methods and tools to deal with such situation.
      It's an ''I can only depend on myself'' type of mindset, which isn't a bad thing, it's a good thing really, granted that they then inform themselves on the subject.

      I'm afraid you think wrong. I've got a lot of confidence in the people at NASA, who are not only highly trained and compassionate people but also friends of Destin. That doesn't mean there wasn't a little bit of tension, but the fact that this video was uploaded sans-fanfare was a clear sign that everything worked out. It was fascinating to see how easily even a powerful mind goes vacant without the air we take for granted each day.

    When I tried the low pressure chamber the most notable symptom I sensed was a feeling of euphoria like if I had a beer just before.This is the most dangerous because you are in a critical situation and you feel happy, you would not take any action feeling like this. Also these symptoms are different from person to person so one has to train to get to recognize his symptoms of hypoxia. So if you fly an aeroplane and start to feel like having drunk alcohol check your oxygen supply and lose height!

      Another thing to remember is that your kids will survive without oxygen for a bit even if they do happen to pass out quickly. Once you get yourself breathing you can assist them and the oxygen should revive them.
