I worked in Marine Corps Aviation Logistics and had many friends who were air crew on helicopters (MAG-29)...according to them, anyone who says they are not nervous are complete liars. lol Bc the brain's self-preservation is a powerful force...but the key to being a Marine is overcoming our fears to accomplish the mission. Great job guys!! This video should be added to their training schedule.

Part of "overcoming" fear is recognizing and admitting that it's there. Then facing it. The fear doesn't go away, you don't "overcome" it, you work with it. You work through it. It's far more strong to say, "yes, I'm afraid" and then facing it than to lie and say you have no fear. "No fear" is bullshit and gets people killed.

The guys who admitted fear and still jumped into the pool without question truky embodied the Marine spirit. If you think about it in order to be courageous you must first also be a little scared. If there's no fear it requires no courage to overcome the obstacle. The gentleman in the video who jumped in without being able to swim is an inspiration to me. He will go very far in life.

Did you ever swim in a large pool and did you ever try to hold your breath and dive to the bottom (trying to touch the floor 8ft down or so)? Every time I did that, my ears would pop in and I would feel fairly intense pressure up my nose trying to force water into my sinuses , my eustachian canal or my lungs. It hurts for a second but since you were holding your breath from the surface, you can just right yourself and rapidly ascend those 8 ft and feel fine. Now imagine the opposite. Now imagine doing that 20ft down.

The Marine who said something like " you're gonna die someday" resonated with me so much with my time and deployments in the Army. It's the thought process to keep you sane when every day could very well be your last.

The first time I went surfing, I had just driven 3 days by myself across the country. I went to a surf shop and picked up a board. After some exhausting minutes learning stuff, I finally grabed a wave. It was a little bigger than I first though and it sent me flying forward into the water. It absolutely crushed me, shot me down to the bottom, and I remember my leg touching some rocks as I tumbled. The leash on the my ankle pulled my leg in the direction the board was headed and I had no idea where I was. There was no "up". Panic set in as I didn't have a chance to get a real breath before I entered the water. I didn't know where I was. I didn't know how to surface, I thought I was going to drown. Then suddenly I had this moment of clarity. I just told myself to sit still at the bottom, be calm, wait. I remember opening my eyes and looking up at the massive crashing wave above me, but where I was it was calm and quiet. I told myself I wasn't going to run out of breath immediately, so I took a moment to figure out the situation. I just relaxed and waited for everything to pass. I looked around again, the water above was calm. I swam up, grabbed my board, and headed for shore. I still think of this moment when I get overwhelmed by stuff. How I was able to just sit back and analyze the situation. This was one of the scariest moments of my life while I was entering the water, only to turn into one of the calmest I can remember to this day.

Honestly, it's really not as bad as it may seem. I did dunker training in preparation to go on an aircraft carrier a few years back. It's actually quite a fun experience unless you are terrified of water. What you need to remember is, as military, we are programmed in basic training to follow drills and commands. Not only that, it's 10 seconds to do the drills or the master diver gets in and whips you to the surface.
You'd be amazed at what you can do when you're put into a high pressure situation.

Swimming is helpful but not totally necessary for Navy or Marines, simply floating much more helpful. Swimming brings up the question of where ya gonna swim to? Nearest land may be a thousand miles away. If you can float and as the old guy said floating is natural then you can splash your way over to something floating, ( that is in the event of a sinking). If you happen to fall overboard unobserved, well, you're screwed anyway.

I wish I could ask him about this, but unfortunately he died when I was very very young. But my grandfather was in the marines during the vietnam cleanup operations. As I understand, he was in a helicopter clearing sea mines from vietnamese water when it crashed into the ocean. Pretty much exactly what is being trained here. What blows my mind is that not only was he able to escape, but he was able to pull out the man next to him who was unconscious from the crash. I always knew it was impressive but seeing just how intense this controlled and safe experiment is gives me even more respect for him

Where was this video when I started watching your videos? It's been hidden from my view until today in November 2020.
I'm a 65-year-old man, 66 in January, and I have to tell you, this was one of the most intense videos I've ever watched, and that includes a debriefing video from Vietnam where 13 US armed forces service members started out, and only 3 survived, and we had to watch death happen in front of our eyes.
Why was this more intense? In war, there is death. It's there. Training exercises aren't supposed to be fatal. But that one could have been if those marines had been on their own.
But what got to me? When you, Destin, talked about life's anchors. That was epic.
Thank you for bringing me back to my anchors, which include my sweetheart of 43 years who means more to me than life itself. And of course, what you alluded to, truth, or for us, Christ, the rock of ages and the One and Only Way.
    God bless you!

This is a great video. In the early 1970s as a USAF helicopter pilot I had orders transferring me to a unit in Hawaii while I was attending the Command and Staff College. As part of my courses I began researching helicopters ditching at sea, preparing for my own survival in case of an emergency in my future job. Realizing the seriousness of disorientation under water, I wrote two articles about escaping from submerged helicopters. Both articles were published in military magazines before formal escape training as shown in this video became available. Dan Nicholson, LtCol, USAF Ret.

Ever since I was young my small little town had a public pool. I started going with my parents when I was around 6 and by age 8-9 I was going alone, which wasn’t completely allowed but since I went for so long I was practically family. I was there basically every single day from noon to 8, with an hour or two break. I’m not exaggerating when I say that either, every single day with minor exceptions. I eventually went so much that the life guards gave me quarters to help clean up after everyone left at 8. I taught myself to swim more than anything, my parents just let me be and I’m happy they did. Doing something for yourself is much more satisfying. I became a Cub Scout for quite a few years and a couple years of Boy Scouts, didn’t quite make Eagle Scouts because I just didn’t have the time. At a camp we went to 4 times a year, we had multiple days where we had two hours of swim class. There were a few rankings you could be and had to have a keychain to show what you were. I was the highest there was, along with only one other person, out of the couple hundred that were there. Being 10 or 11 at the time being better than all of the older 16-17 year olds, really boosted my confidence. Now, being 17, having my town pool shut down because they didn’t have the funding a couple years ago, really hurt. Lost a bunch of friends that I made there and lost what I feel like a piece of my life. I don’t know why I shared with you guys this story but if you did read, I just wanted to get that story out there. Haven’t talked about it in a long time and just wanted to express my love for the water.

All US Marines can swim even if it's just a little bit. It is a requirement to pass boot camp. At least it was when I was in from 2007 to 2011. All Marines also had to pass a swim qual every year after that too. I think those two were just nervous about being poor swimmers and trying to have a sense of humor about it.

When I retired I was hired by PHI Helicopters in Lafayette Louisiana. I too went thru the day long Dunker Training. The training was awesome. And like you said extremely dangerous. I loved how the Marines said na, we aren’t scared. Hey they are Marines, the Best of the Best. As an Army Warrant Officer I have the utmost respect for the Marine Corps. Well they learned real quick that once in the water it’s serious “S”
Again Dustin you are awesome. By the way, your video during the Solar Eclipse and catching the ISS (Space station) zip past the sun was crazy spot on. Who ever did the math that got u to that Lat/Long and timing to cats the Space Station did a super job

Cheers man! I've been checking out the Warrant officer flight training program recently (lets you guarantee flying helicopters if you can pass all the classes/schools even starting as a civilian). What was being a warrant officer like? I'm sure it's changed a bit, for example I'd almost definitely want to fly an Apache, but I'd love some stories if you have them.
Apparently in the new Dunker/HOST program that warrant officers take, you also have to egress while blindfolded as the final challenge of the day. Incredible!

    • @nymalous3428
      @nymalous3428 6 років тому +1

Mich B I'm pretty sure that Destin did the math to get the timing and Lat/Long of the ISS himself, then had a friend (at NASA?) check it. As far as I know, Destin's math was correct. And yes, that was an awesome achievement, he basically calculated the exact future position of a tiny speck traveling at high speed through a gigantic expanse. Amazing.

I'm a Marine stationed near the east coast and a few months ago, I got my Open Water Scuba Diving Certification. I was cave diving with a group of about 6 people in a spring in Florida. We had two dive master's one at the front and one at the rear. To sum it up quickly, I ended up behind our rear dive master (He didn't keep track of me, it is what it is.) And I very quickly found myself alone 90 feet below the surface with just my flash-light and training in an underwater cave. The visibility got quite limited. It was certainly not an ideal situation to find myself in... however, you learn to stay calm and follow your instinct. I made it out of the cave and reunited with them before they surfaced.
If anyone ever finds themselves in a bad situation underwater, just remember; there is NO situation that you can't make worse by panicking. Stay calm, and follow your intuition.

I was lucky enough to quickly hang on to the front seat and not get thrown out. I was on the back seat with no seat belt but my brother and driver at the front did. They ended up hanging upside down with just their whole head dipped in the muddy water but they didn't know. They were panicking thinking the whole car was drowning. I was able to release their seat belt and luckily help came quickly.

A few deployments before i went on my first, an Osprey crashed while trying to land on a moving ship. It turned over and crashed in the water. The marines aboard during the time were some of my NCO’s. The crash took the life of a marine that was with our unit. The survivors reacted different towards helicopters and simply just water. This training is valuable. This training is necessary because everything goes good until it doesnt. If anybody ever has the opportunity to take a course like this, do it. You may never know when if or when itll be important.
