I can understand why, she was an overachiever, never really failed at anything and she viewed herself as a high quality woman. Her marriage was falling apart from being away from her husband and she found a new guy "on her level", and tried to upgrade. Astronaut guy basically rejected her after having his fun and she couldn't accept her replaced her with a younger woman. I mean, duh! What did you think Lisa? I don't think that NASA can "beef up it's screening process" anymore than it already is. It's probably one of the most intense screening processess there is. There's always going to be a person here or there that ends up having problems down the line. They could have a mental illness show up that they've never had before, and definitely didn't have during the screening process. Or certain stresses that build up and cause a mental breakdown. Plus a lot of "normal" people end up having strange abnormal reactions when it comes to love, or what they think is love. They could fight in a war, have no serious issues at all, but then have someone break up with them and they go of the deep end.

Nowak also trained with Tammie Jo Shults, who went on to commercial aviation with Southwest Airlines and became famous after she and her first officer on that set of flights, Darren Ellisor, landed their 737 after an engine blew out. In rather stark contrast to Nowak, Shults volunteers and helps a lot of people.
Edit: as the replies have reminded me, I seem to have forgotten about the part where a passenger was halfway out the window, requiring truncation of the emergency procedures for an engine out event. Or maybe I hoped people were capable of using Google if they didn't understand what the hell I was talking about. Gods forbid people actually do a little research before saying things. I know, it would take precious seconds out of our lives, but really, I shouldn't have to regurgitate all the information about an event every time I talk about it.

@@doomsday9973 I see you want the essay? Excellent. See below for TLDR.
Sorry for the late reply, I don't have notifications for comments turned on, for a reason. Also sorry if I seem like I'm in a bad mood, I'm sore and perpetually tired and the letters on the screen are blurring together, but I'm making a valiant attempt to give you the benefit of the doubt. I also won't make you sit through my favorite landings but suffice it to say losing a single engine isn't always the nonevent it's designed to be (UAL232 and UAL1175 are two wonderful examples).
Lo and behold, I kinda forgot the part of this story where one of the passengers was half out of the window. A fan blade out event occurred, causing cowling to fly off the engine with the same force as if the blade had penetrated the cowling, striking the fuselage. This caused a window to pop out, blowing the poor lady seated next to it halfway out in a rapid decompression. Which actually meant the crew had three emergencies on their hands, which is more impressive, and I guess you can blame me for assuming people would at least try and find out what I'm talking about if they didn't know.
I don't recall implying Captain Shults and First Officer Ellisor pulled of a nigh-unsurvivable maneuver from a rather insulting movie though. Flight was based very loosely off Alaska 261, which lost a critical component and spiraled out of control into the ocean, killing everyone on board. The families of those killed in that flight were upset at how certain people were portrayed and honestly, they're right to be upset. There are better movies about flights, though I'm not sure I'd consider Sully (2016) to be one, not completely, as it's really more about the trauma of the landing than the event itself.
But yeah, Captain Shults flew Southwest 1380, if you remember that one. I highly recommend reading the full CVR for SWA1380 because the efficiency of the crew is something to behold. The amazing factor with SWA1380 isn't so much the single engine as it is the effective and efficient use of CRM in the face of multiple emergencies. Can't land a plane if you're fighting with your crewmembers. Actually, crew disagreeing on how to fly their plane has led to many accidents. Or everyone was working the problem instead of, you know, actually flying the damn bird. Go ahead and fact check me on all this. Do it, you won't.
TLDR; This was SWA1380, the flight with the lady hanging out of the window; Flight is an awful movie and its creators have no souls, the interesting part is the CRM.

The United States Naval Academy is not an Ivy League school, but it is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. In fact, it's admissions rate is more selective than some of the Ivy League schools, like Cornell. Just getting in is an enormous accomplishment, let alone graduating. It has graduated more astronauts than any other school.

I live in Annapolis and have met and talked to alot of those kids. The USNA degrees are "lite" versions of equivalent degrees offered in normal colleges, with a healthy side of Phys Ed. The kids are mostly connected as admission is related to getting sponsored by a state senator. As a group, they have the typical "yes sir, no sir" military persona and a need to be part of something bigger than themselves. No creatives in that group, just "work hard play hard" sons and daughters of narcissists. They are set for life.

I know this might sound crazy, but I followed NASA manned missions very closely back then, I would get the Flight Data Files from JSC through the FOIA office, would print them up and follow the mission by watch on NASA TV and the flight documents that I had. The point to that is to show how closely I followed those last shuttle missions. I saw Lisa Nowak on CAPCOM during a lot of those flights. When she got picked for a flight on STS-121 I was happy for her since she had been on CAPCOM so much. Being on CAPCOM is usually the step before being picked for a flight. When Nowak attacked Shipman I was really upset and wondered why she did that, then the e-mails were released and it was "what were you thinking."

Human nature. We're designed for sex. Some of us can't control those urges. That's it. If anything its pretty good that only 2 astronauts so far have ever been convicted of a serious crime. The system mostly works in vetting out the ones that can't control themselves. Mostly.

I worked with her when this all went down. She would show up to Bill's training and she wasn't even in his crew. We all thought something was up. Funny thing, is that Micheal Jackson died right after this and I knew a girl who worked with NASA's PR guy and the day Michael died she told me the pr guy was coming back to Houston because his interviews were canceled. I asked why and she said that Micheal Jackson had just died. I asked "did we just off Micheal Jackson and I didn't get the memo?".....what was a joke to me at that time, now truly has me scratching my head. I haven't worked there in about 10 years.

@danevertt3210 I have a lot of crazy stories during that time. Rusty Yates, the husband of Andrea Yates (lady who drowned her kids in a tub) also worked there. I saw him a few times and he was a weird guy. I bumped into Travis Barker in the restroom there. Blink 182 was getting a tour in our building and I just tore that 2 stall restroom UP! Big lunch....anyways, on my way out I literally bumped into him and I said "you might want to wait about 35, 45 minutes.... or find another restroom." LOL he said "it's all good brother". Oh, and I will always add that Mark Kelly, yes the senator's husband, was one of the most egotistical and mean people I've ever met. Just a terrible Human being who just treated everyone like trash. I will forever go out of my way, until the day I die, telling people how terrible he was. Just so rude and mean to us. His twin Scott, was awesome and friendly.
