I hand it to Joe on the Howard Stern show, he admitted that replicating EVH is hard even for a virtuoso. His struggle with the intro to Mean Street proves that he's human. Can he pull off the tribute, you bet. Will his tone match EVH's, nope! Joe is Joe and he's honest about it. He once said he got to play Brian May's guitar and setup and he sounded like himself.

Jacob Deraps, he's had multiple VH guitar covers on YT for around 10yrs. There's one of him doing Mean Streets, he was 16 at the time, nails it. He plays these songs (looking) effortless. But even almost as equally important as you can see in his later vids he can move and looks stage worthy like Eddie did while he's slaying the strings. This kid would be the perfect fit imo.
I totally agree. Jacob has the swing and groove of EVH's playing nailed. He plays all of those songs as good, if not better than anyone. Sounds damn near exactly like the playing on the albums. I just recently heard him play Girl Gone Bad and it was done flawlessly.

However, he has no name recognition, no high level of fame, no publicity behind his name. He won't sell tickets according to Hagar.. Also, I can see Hagar not thinking Jacob is up to par with the other three legends in the band, Hagar would see that as being disrespectful to them. Oh, and if that is a requirement to have a legend to go along with the other three, then call Paul Gilbert, not only can he play VH note for note, he has extreme reverence for Eddie, would be so respectful, would do everything he could do to do Eddie and the fans justice. But, Paul wasn't in Chickenfoot, so I guess he is out..

I think it's crazy that no ons is mentioning Wolfgang, to stand in for his father. He plays his dad's material quite well and sounds damn near similar. It would be awesome if Roth/Hagar, Alex, Michael and Wolf did a tribute tour. That would he as close to Van Halen as you can get and I think Eddie would love it this way.

To have Joe Satriani play Eddie Van halen actually shows how good Eddie was, kudos to Joe because he has the balls to take that challenge as it shows how unique Eddie’s style was as even a great guitar guru like Satriani could not imitate Van halen. There is just one Eddie Van halen and one Joe Satriani both are legends at their own way so stop comparing.

No matter who plays a van Halen song, there will always be hate towards that player because it's not Eddie. No one will ever be Eddie. There for, should there be no more live van Halen because there's no Eddie. I think Joe can do it. Give him some time and I personally think he will get it down. It won't be good enough for everyone but it will be good enough to see someone at least trying to keep van Halen going.

Better way to do it is to have 5-10 guitarists (Nuno, Gilbert, etc.). Give them each 2-3 songs that they can work on and get nailed down. Also need to finish the show or tour with Wolfgang if he's willing to do it. He's got the old man's stuff down cold. Close your eyes and it's tough to tell the difference.
That's how to do a proper tribute.
We do not know how long Joe had to prepare for the Stern event, but Hagar made the comment of the 'This is the first time we rehearsed this (5150 I believe)'. The band was also playing through some weak sounding equipment probably because the Stern show had that requirement for the studio. I think everyone is being way too hard on this single event. Given the proper time, I think Joe would nail it. -IMHO

It was that his amp had too much gain and not enough mid range to induce the harmonics. It was 6 am and he wasn’t thinking about how his rig would need to be adjusted when performing this particular part.

guy stepped in for mick jagger in ‘88 and deep purple in ‘94, he’s been a pro in the business for close to 40 yrs so i dont think hes gonna have ass this and he’s done the prep work for big gigs before. Everyone shit their pants and freaked and no one wants to wait till the actual tour to see him play this stuff, of course he’s gonna woodshed the material

To me putting anybody up there to play Eddie's exact parts is what would be disrespectful I just see this as a group of guys, 2 of whom were actually Van Halen members, who have a lot of experience playing together doing the songs from the Hagar era. Second.....Eddie had his style but he was never as good a musician as Randy Rhoads, Jake E Lee, Zakk Wylde, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen. Eddie had his sound and style but he could only play Eddie. The others can play more, they are versatile musicians period. No one can replace Eddie. What would happen if Nuno Bettencourt joined a Nirvana tribute band? Satriani's tone always sucked for crushing riffs and there is no better material than VH to expose it.
Joe didn’t even use a real amp on the Howard stern show, it was a Fender tone master pro amp modeler (which has the 6505 with EVH pedals in it)… his signature Amp Peavey JSX was based on the EVH 5150 amp (Both designed by James Brown of peavey). You don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to tone or anything lol
Since joe has a old peavey 5150, el34 5153, and some plexi marshalls i wouldnt be surprised if he tours with those (or one of them) but i think he’ll stick to the jvm marshalls

Yeah, Josh Jones is an excellent guitarist, but his playing style can often get a bit too aggressive/hyperbolic, when considering playing EVH’s material. Eddie Van Halen was definitely not a metal guitarist by any stretch. He would be an awesome fit though, for any VH Tribute band.
Jacob Deraps is another dude that plays EVH really well. Like you mentioned, there are quite a few on UA-cam, that would easily be a better fit than Satriani (no offense to Joe).🤨

Joe will be fine and play the hell out of these songs. All pros need to practice, all you are hearing is a band just starting to play material for the first time in a long while. They went on the show after just getting the idea together. People bagging on one of the top guitarist of all times is ridiculous. Joe is a GOD, the best instrumental guitarist on the planet, he won't QUIT. And he's a perfectionist who didn't even REHEARSE Eddies material. I'm 48, heard every guitarist out their from the 80's, and played with 1 of the best (in Byzantine) I've ever seen or heard. Joe isn't trying to replace Eddie, just like no one can replace Joe. One of the best ever, but styles/tones too different." After seeing the clips on Stern I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE HIM DO MORE AND ADD HIS FLAVOUR! OMG! It is soooooo tasty what he did! I just watched of few minutes of the band playing “Summer Nights” on the Stern performance & in my opinion, it was weak.
The intro was a complete train wreck & the band has no energy. I understand it was 6am, but I know 3-guys who could have played that song better than Joe did.

A well rehearsed, in the zone Satch can and would pull it off better than anyone. Will there be some Satch nuances peppered in here and there,? Count on it. However, he would t do it unless his performances of Ed's parts, leads and rhythm parts were spot on. He's arguably one of the best guitarists alive.
Another worthy candidate is Joe Bonamasa.
No doubt Ed's playing is technically challenging if not exhausting, so to play an entire show Of VH songs in front of thousands and deliver it flawlessly is probably the most demanding gig a guitarist can do.

Sammy also stated that is why he chose Joe Satitroni 1. Respected guitar player that will draw fans and other guitar players out and 2. The guy knows what he is doing professionally with years upon years of playing and live playing. Hey man, calm down a bit and put the Howard Stern situation in context. Yeah, I agree, the level of distortion was too high. The drums were an e drum-set. They haven't rehearsed extremely much yet. You can criticize all that. Also that Joe has his own style and you could hear that a bit too much. On the one hand, many things will be brought to the point when it really gets going. It was just a message that they're going to do something because others can't get anything going. DLR is the lousiest guy when it comes to that. That's why the first thing I was happy about was the message that something was finally coming in that direction. Sammy is 76, by the way. I personally don't want anyone trying to be 90 or 100% Eddie, what's all this nonsense? First and foremost, he should play the songs with ernergy and in such a way that we can celebrate Eddie's songwriting. Sammy and Michael have the right to play with musicians where the chemistry is right. That is the case with this line-up, O.K! So you should more be happy about the project rather than constantly complaining. What are the others doing? Nothing! If they do anything at all - then it's always complaining or being lazy. That pisses me of. There isn't even a live DVD/BluRay of VH1 yet. They haven't managed to do anything in this direction. That's pathetic. At VH and DLR there was always some kind of dispute going on the whole time. This permanent arrogance also prevented the fans from being well looked after. It is currently even preventing the last VH album from being available to buy. Unbelievable. Well, there might have been a possibility that would have been great. Namely, if Wolfgang would play the guitar. He has proven that he can do that. Maybe he'll come on stage and play at least 2 songs. We'll talk about it again next summer when we've seen what was ultimately done. Then we can complain ... complain ... and complain in the usual DLR way. Rock n' Roll

Yes. The issue with satriani is that the show is highlighting evh and he doesn't seem to take it seriously. If he was put on the spot by hagar without practice it was a totally unprofessional move that stained something in its "pre" stages and caused concern and rightousely so. Nobody should pay top $ to see a show that didn't perform the product at top quality. Satriani is great, surfing/flying are excellent but if he cannot replicate evh's early playing then you will see a subpar show playing vh songs that sound like evh "light" as evh abandoned his true talented playing by 1984. Hagar is forever playing hagar era vh so there isn't much of a draw as you can see that anytime hagar plays live...the draw is in playing both early era vh songs with a guitarist that can nail them and having vh members play their parts. And trump? Bankruptcy 5+ times and not one offer to help those small businesses he fkd when doing so. Does not rep everyone. Biden? Clown that has two things going for him, he doesn't discount "freaks" because they aren't "normal" and doesn't force people to give up their personal freedoms like the abortion "debate". Trump talks about "draining the swamp" when he lives the live of a swamp inhabitant.

Yeah his guitar tone was wretched and it was obvious he just can't play Eddie. I liked Surfing With The Alien but since he's been a hired gun for tribute bands, Deep Purple, ect... And Jason Bonham can't do Alex either.

Sammy didn’t do it right he went above Alex Van Halen’s head and organized this half ass tribute band be cause it’s a tribute to his time in Van Halen and that’s all he cares about people need to wise up and see this for what it is a direct slap in Alex Van Halen’s face and the face of every true Halen fan and not to mention Eddie’s legacy,your way over your head sammy the brothers kicked you out for a reason accept it move on have a little respect!!!!

I think you're being a little harsh when it comes to Joe's playing. Of course Joe isn't going to sound like Eddie did back in the day. Eddie is a once in a lifetime guitar player. That man was literally sent by the cosmos to shred on the guitar like no other. It was incredible. Joe is 67 years old. Sammy is 76 years old! These men are not in their prime and they still sound pretty darn good! I get that your expectations are high as a diehard Van Halen fan, but at least they are getting people listening to Van Halen again with their interpretation of it. I mean, David Lee Roth is 69 years old and can barely hold a tune anymore. In Eddie's final years, he couldn't play the way he once did. These men are getting old and want to rock out! What's wrong with that?
