I believe having this surgery saved me from a future of diabetes , joint pain and a shortened life. I went from 318 lbs to 150 lbs and finally fall into the "normal" range for my weight.

Watch some of the videos from people who had it done. They will be FAR more honest than a doctor. The surgeons won't tell you everything because they are scared you might change your mind. They are hungry for that money.
The Sleeve looks and sounds a lot safer imo. I don't like the thought of the bypass procedure as it just leaves the rest of the stomach there in your abdomen. This video is great and has give me a better understanding of both surgeries. Now I just need to get the money to pay for it (UK) I don't know how I go about seeing if I am an available candidate for the NHS to this. Thanks

I recommend anyone considering weight loss surgery joins a weight loss group on Facebook and get information from those who have been through the operations. They cut out the Fundus is what I’ve heard. That’s the part that makes the Ghrelin it’s true it does come back but never in the way it was before. Wow. You must live in a good nursing home. I had visited one and on my way in, a man was calling for help. 2 hours later after I finished my visit, on my way out, he was still calling for help. I asked him if I could help. His pant was caught on the bed and he was holding onto his walker that whole time unable to unlatch it in his own. I unlatched it in two seconds and he raced toward the restroom happy "I'm going to make it this time!" I noticed he wore a hand-knitted yarmulke hat. Say thank you to every nurse who helps you.

I'm at 29 months& I whole- heartedly agree. Perpetual nausea/ vomiting ,strictures, stenosis, and now I marginal and jejuneal ulcerations. The only joy is I now weigh a little over half of my original weight (365 to 193 pounds) but i have stretche'd out skin from where the fat left, wrinkles where I never had before facial, I feel ugly, I feel sick, what an emotional cost to just live longer.
I had my spleen removed when I was a teenager, and during a back surgery in 2010, a vascular surgeon had to make an incision at a 45 degree angle from my spleen scar to work on my spine from the front. Knowing this info would that disqualify me from gastric bypass?

Don't quote me on this but I think it's because the fact that you are eating 85% less. So you might be missing out on calcium or vitamin D and what not.

I also have acid reflux so I want to have bypass so it clears up that. I don't understand why you shouldn't have bypass if you've had ulcers? Also why does the bypass something cause hernias? Hi dr. I really need good advice to make decision to do gastric sleeve or no, cause I’m 5f3” and 180lb, 42 years old. My concern it is do NOT want lose weight more than 65-70lb, cause it’s going to be to much if lose more than 70lb. We have performed over 16,000 surgeries and almost never hear a patient say they feel they lost too much weight. Surgery is a tool; not a cure. You still control what you eat and how much you eat. The amount of weight you lose is largely up to you.
that what i heard the bypass can cure gerd, since the part of the stomach that causes acid is separated for the esophagus.. so in theory no more acid reflux.. while the sleeve might make reflux even worse...
Bariatric surgeries do not lead to stomach cancer. As a matter of fact, people who have bariatric surgery and lose a significant amount of weight have a decreased risk of multiple types of cancer.
Hi thank you for the informative video im supposed to be getting my surgery next month and i still havnt been able to decide on whether to go for the rny or the sleeve. Im 32 yrs old and i have pcos. Ive been doing ok with the diet that my nutritionist put me on. My surgeon suggest that i get the sleeve but i was originally favoring the rny. I was 280lbs starting this process not im at 254lbs due to my pcos o havnt been able loose weight easily or get pregnant . Now that being said im afraid that of i get the sleeve i will gain alot of the weight that i loose back. O have friends who have had sleeve done and get 3x as big. I dont want that to happen to me any suggestion?
generally if your medications cant be gotten in liquid form then most surgeons will advise you to get the sleeve since your stomach absorbs medications the same after but bypass does not because it creates a lack of medications passing through the part of the intestine where meds are absorbed.
Yep they sure do- every time you'll have X-rays the radiologist will mention it in the notes- just had upper gi with barium- I was reminded I have surgical staples/ clips there( 29 months since GB) and from my gallery bladder and appendix removals which were 36 years ago. Ah well, it dies give them something to talk about.
After going to the support groups, the people who had the bypass done seemed to be the ones with malabsorption issues, iron, Vitamin D, even when they took the vitamins, their bodies seemed to not absorb them. Part of the reason why I went with the sleeve, plus overall I’m pretty healthy, just 100+ lbs overweight for my height. No diabetes or other issues, I just need more help than diet and exercise to get my weight down. You’re taking vitamins though because you won’t be eating the same as before, only a fraction at best.
i had the lap band and have regretted every day for the last 10 years i went from 460 pounds to 300 pounds than i slowly gained weight till i was 490 pounds and im miserable and my date only gets worse because my teeth are like chalk can i cant chew anything hard
Many band patients have converted to a sleeve or bypass and have great success with their revisions. An important element of safely and healthfully losing weight after surgery is to be on BARIATRIC-specific vitamins and to have annual labs done to check vitamin and nutrition levels. With gastric bypass, is there records of the left portion of stomach affected by to much bile? there is no food in stomach to absorb bile, so are the gastric juices going to erode the stomach inner lining as they have no food to work on?Thank you.

I had an open removal of gall bladder and appendix with a right paramedian scar 6+ inches long 36 years ago- nope didn't preclude my gastric bypass.
I have malabsorption problems in all areas. The doctors are thinking Crohn's. That was their thought last CT scan.

You can only eat 4-6oz after the surgery. Which a normal stomach takes more than that.
Lifelonh supplements are only on the bypass not the sleeve

Can I have this kind of surgery as my Gaul bladder was removed?
Yes. Having your gallbladder removed does not affect your ability to have bariatric surgery.

What about acid reflux? It was recommended I do the RNY over the sleeve since I have a history of severe acid reflux.

Now that being said im afraid that of i get the sleeve i will gain alot of the weight that i loose back. O have friends who have had sleeve done and get 3x as big. I dont want that to happen to me any suggestion?
You should get pregnant and nurse. I went down to a size 2 nursing. The baby eats all your food.
What if you stopped smoking 8 years ago?
A gastric bypass can usually be done on someone who has successfully stopped smoking.

generally if your medications cant be gotten in liquid form then most surgeons will advise you to get the sleeve since your stomach absorbs medications the same after but bypass does not because it creates a lack of medications passing through the part of the intestine where meds are absorbed.
I know with the sleeve the staple's stay in for the rest of your life (yikes!) what about gastric bypass?
Yep they sure do- every time you'll have X-rays the radiologist will mention it in the notes- just had upper gi with barium- I was reminded I have surgical staples/ clips there( 29 months since GB) and from my gallery bladder and appendix removals which were 36 years ago. Ah well, it dies give them something to talk about.

If there's no malabsorption in either case, then why have to take vitamins the rest of one's life? I don't understand...
Wonderwall36 i think its just because you would be eating a lot less, and not able to get all the necessary nutrients through food alone.
eating less means less vitamins from your food for your body so you need the vitamins..
After going to the support groups, the people who had the bypass done seemed to be the ones with malabsorption issues, iron, Vitamin D, even when they took the vitamins, their bodies seemed to not absorb them. Part of the reason why I went with the sleeve, plus overall I’m pretty healthy, just 100+ lbs overweight for my height. No diabetes or other issues, I just need more help than diet and exercise to get my weight down. You’re taking vitamins though because you won’t be eating the same as before, only a fraction at best.

i had the lap band and have regretted every day for the last 10 years i went from 460 pounds to 300 pounds than i slowly gained weight till i was 490 pounds and im miserable

Many band patients have converted to a sleeve or bypass and have great success with their revisions. An important element of safely and healthfully losing weight after surgery is to be on BARIATRIC-specific vitamins and to have annual labs done to check vitamin and nutrition levels. It really is a lifelong commitment and you need a thorough program that offers that support.

You mention ulcers, I have ulcerative colitis, I'm assuming when you say "ulcers" you mean both stomach and colon ulcers?
No Marissa usually they're talking about marginal ulcers In the stomach pouch and jejunum ( small intestine) 29 months after surgery I am the unhappy bearer of both. Have a phone consult (because of COVID19 not face-to-face) with my b surgeon in coming week

You can get surgery with a bmi of 35 -40 if you have co morbidities

With gastric bypass, is there records of the left portion of stomach affected by to much bile? there is no food in stomach to absorb bile, so are the gastric juices going to erode the stomach inner lining as they have no food to work on?Thank you.

Good question....my sis had stomach issue with stuff spilling into her gut after here surgery.....shes not here anymore and it makes wonder was that the cause of her death....Im supposed to be getting tbe gastric bypass so yeah.....I wanna know rbe answer to that as well
