I had an IVC Filter installed in Dec 2019, after a PE one week before i was scheduled for total hip replacement surgery. Blood thinners prevent open wounds from healing. Finally, my wounds healed having sacrificed 2 toes to amputation. Had infection to the bone. Aug 19 I consult with the orthopedic surgeon about doing my hip.
Then , when the hip is all healed, they can remove the IVC. I hope.

I’m preparing for total knee replacement. I had DVTs and PEs with diastolic heart failure 7 months ago. Ortho dr said “go off Eliquis for 2 days pre op and then 2 baby aspirins for 2 wks post”. I felt uneasy abt that so asked my pulmonologist. He said “whoa, whoa, no, no, no! That’s old protocol.” He suggested IVC filter put in shortly b4 TKR and removal asap after surgery and back on Eliquis but now I’m scared and confused. I’ve had really crappy luck in last 2 yrs after having had Covid….one thing after another.

@teriwrong…I’m in the hospital r/n as I’m reading your comment. I had a IVC filter placed in the early 2000’s with the hospital trying Eliquis first. Ended up having a thrombectomy on both legs in 2020 after complaining for DAYS that my legs were killing me, so I b!tched and moaned for HOURS before they did a doppler scan and the Vascular Surgeon said that clots were “back up like a 4 lane highway in both legs. It took them one day to do one leg and the next day to do the other and I went straight to ICU both times.
Now I’m here in the hospital and have been here 10 days because the filter has “tilted” and the “legs” of the filter have perforated the surrounding tissue. They told me it would take a full open abdominal surgery to remove it but because of my 40 years of having Crohn’s Disease and 10 open abdominal surgeries they have decided it’s way too risky. Tomorrow I go down for an EGD with a EUS to see to what extent it has perforated. I’ve been told by the Vascular Surgery Team that pain control is my ONLY OPTION PERMANENTLY and I’m absolutely FUMING!
I hope the best for you and I 🙏🏽 that you experience no complications if you have to have one, and then have it removed ASAP!!

I have one of the cook filters that I didn't know was put inside of me (found by accident by a xray done at a Chiropractor). Was told because of the time it has been in (2005) and it's perforated, it cannot be removed.

Same here, same model! I’m watching this from my hospital bed! I sued Cooks Medical in Federal Court and was JUST made a settlement offer with “no fault” two weeks ago but my Attorney’s have REJECTED the amount. Get you representation ASAP!! Mine cannot be removed and pain management is my only option at this time, at least this is what they are telling me!! I’m in sooooo much pain and it’s UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

I have had a PE. I now need a total knee replacement. Dr. Said I needed a IVC filter for the surgery and remove it after about 3 months. I still have a clot in the leg that I’m having surgery on. Is this a good idea.

Is blood thinners needed if you have an ivc filter? It was put in in 2015. I have a solidified DVT in my left calf. It was put in when I was just out of a 2 week, medicated coma when new clots developed in my right calf. That one went away. The left one likely never will. Very active i am. Thanks.

you should probably still use blood thinners if you have a DVT

The filters they use now in 2019 are a lot better and less complications. I just had mine put in yesterday in preparation for bariatric surgery on Dec. 10th. My doctor explained all this in detail and told me about the few problems he's had with filters but he's been doing this for 30 years and said the filter they are using now, he's been using for a few years and has never had any problems with. Good luck with your Dad.

Yes, they say the filter will eventually cause you other health problems. Mine being removed in June and I've only had it for 6 weeks.
