Climbing Stol/Hochstuhl (2237 m) from the southwest with kids | Karawanks (Slovenia)

In less than two minutes we give you an overview of the ascent of the Stol/Hochstuhl along the Slovenian side (southwestern flank), so you have a first impression of the magnificent panoramic views and the trail characteristics, allowing you to prepare your own trip.
Brief hike description:
The Karawanks are a mountain range whose ridge forms the border of Slovenia (in the South) and Austria (in the North). The highest peak is the Stol (SLO) or Hochstuhl (AU), with a height of 2,237 m. On 18 July 2022, we climbed the Stol/Hochstuhl with our kids as a ‘warm-up’ for our one-day-hike towards the Triglav on 19 July (Julian Alps, see another video). We parked our car along a gravel road about 200 meters away from Valvasorjev dom pod Stolom (1,163 m) (46.4256N°, 14.1500°E). We started at 11:00 am, we hiked over Zirovniška planina, and from there more or less straight on the southwestern flank towards the summit of the Stol/Hochstuhl (13:40 pm). The path wasn’t very difficult but often quite steep. The landscape above the tree line was characterized by eroded stone/rock blocks, which was more impressive and spatially extended than what we expected based on the view from below. We were especially stunned by the vertical rocky northern side (Austria) of the mountain which was very impressive. In the East you have an extraordinary view on the Kamnik-Savinja Alps with the Grintovec (2,558 m) as a highlight. In the South you’ll find Lake Bled and the Julian Alps (Julijske Alpe). After the main summit, we hiked to the neighboring Mali Stol (2,198 m) and we stopped at Prešernova koča na Stolu to have a drink. From there, we descended about 1h45min towards the parking.
