Hikes In Europe
Belgium
Приєднався 26 сер 2021
We are a Belgian family with three young kids. Since 2015, we are hiking intensively and bring our children into contact with many unique regions and make them aware of the fragility of nature, which we should all cherish. And so far, they still like it :-) From the summer of 2021 onwards, during our holiday in Slovakia, we started to make short video recordings during our hiking trips to make our memories more tangible. After we compiled the videos, we decided to share those amazing and unique places with all of you, and group them under the heading 'HIKES IN EUROPE'. We hope that watching our videos can inspire you, give you a moment of joy or can give you inspiration for your own holidays.
Climbing the Plačlivé (2125m) - Ostrý Roháč (2088m) - Volovec (2064m) | Západné Tatry
A 3-minute overview of our hike along one of the most stunning yet challenging mountain ridges in the Západné Tatry (Western Tatras), conquering the peaks of Plačlivé (2,125 m), Ostrý Roháč (2,088 m), and Volovec (2,064 m).
On Monday, July 22, 2024, we parked at Zverovka - Spálená in Roháčska dolina (Zuberec) for our hike along on of the most breathtaking ridges of the Západné Tatry. The weather forecast predicted increasing cloud cover in the late afternoon. Coupled with high temperatures (26°C), that could increase the risk of thunderstorms. To avoid being on the fully exposed ridge during adverse conditions, we aimed to leave it by 14:00-15:00.
We started our hike at 8:15, taking the short green trail toward the main road (red trail) leading to Ťatliakova chata (timings for the sections are detailed below). From there, we followed the blue trail to Smutné sedlo (1,962 m). After a brief break, we continued along the ridge, summiting Nohavica (2,051 m), Plačlivé (2,125 m), Ostrý Roháč (2,088 m), Volovec (2,064 m), and finally Rakoń (1,879 m), before descending to the saddle Zábrať (1,656 m). From Zábrať, we hiked back to Ťatliakova chata and returned to the parking lot.
The hike offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. While most sections are manageable for experienced hikers, descending Ostrý Roháč toward Jamnické sedlo (1,908 m) is the most challenging part. Chains are installed on this steep and exposed section (2:00), but moments of inattention could have serious consequences. For this reason, we highly recommend using protective equipment (helmet, via ferrata) for children. Our kids used their via ferrata gear at the summit of Ostrý Roháč to ensure a safe descent.

A 2-minute overview of our hike through Maltatal, one of the most beautiful destinations of Carinthia (Kärnten - Austria). Despite a good weather forecast, we had to interrupt our climb to Kattowitzer Hütte and Großer Hafner (3,076 m) due to the formation of unstable clouds around the Hochalmspitze. And in the end, that proved to be a good decision … But we had enough video material to give you...

Hey~ simple video that depicts how the hike feels in actual! Thank you! love it!
Gorguess looking Views How Long does it took you to Climb the Mountain
Hello. About 2,5 hours to the summit. If interested, you can find more details on timing in the description of the video. All the best!
Such a wonderful family adventure! Looks awesome out there. I guess I am heading to Slovakia soon ;)
Liked and subscribed, nice video, I'm planning on doing that route soon. You started the hike at 4:40 am or so, what time did you reach the peak and return? I'm a bit worried about getting down in time, I'm probably going to start earlier at 3 am.
Hi Stuart, thanks for your message. All the relevant times are mentioned in the description. We reached the summit at 12:45 (8 hours climbing, including breakfast and breaks on the way up). Starting at 3am is fine for sure, it gives you more room to fully enjoy the climb and to have a relaxed feeling. Good luck and enjoy your trip! All the best!
amazing climbing & wonderful view !! well done
Great hike!
How old are kids and do they need much hiking experience?
At that time, they were 7, 9 & 12 years old. Regarding the experience for kids, I would say ‘yes’, certainly when you would do it in 1 day. You have the climb >2,000 altimeters, for us it took about 15 hours in total (up & down). The upper climb (via ferrata) is not so difficult, but you should be very careful, certainly with kids. I secured the youngest one with an additional rope. Most details of our trip are listed in the description, but don’t hesitate to contact us if you have further questions. All the best!
The answer above was ours (but apparently I was still logged in with our other account). Grts, Thomas
Walked this. Amazing route! Views are breathtaking, and climbs, too :)
The Priečne sedlo, is via ferrata the only path, or an option parallel to regular path? In video (1:04) it looks that lot of people there are going up without any via ferrata gear.
Indeed, there is a route with iron chains wich you can take without via ferrata gear. The via ferrata is a bit more adventurous but also more safe at the same time with kids I think. All the best!
@@hikesineurope Maybe a bit silly question, but that road with chains, did you see any people with dogs there? :)
I haven’t seen any dogs there 😉
The answer above was ours (but apparently I was still logged in with our other account). Grts, Thomas
Wow, your kids are going to grow up a real mountaineers. :) Watching them on vertical cliff is scary, though. What was the rescue action for? What went wrong?
Apparently there are quite some interventions by medical teams on this via ferrata trail, that’s what a local told us. I don’t know what happened on that day, but many fire fighters and two helicopters were active at that moment. For via ferrata, preparation is ‘key’! When you aren’t 100% sure that you can complete the trail, even when you doubt about 1 single section, you shouldn’t start. I think thats the main message. The Burgenklettersteig is very long, at least when you go for the 3 sections (we only did the 2nd one), so exhaustion is probably one of the reasons why people are getting rescued … cheers! Thomas
@@hikesineurope That's the confusing part. How one knows before that the particular ferrara will be doable? I am now exploring options on top of Garda lake, almost all ferratas in [google maps] have reviews of both being "easy" and "difficult" at the same time.
All via ferratas have a difficulty level, mostly mentioned on the Schall or Hüsler scale, depending on the region. Certainly check those out on Google. In our case, with our youngest daughter, we only do trails with a difficulty level C (Schall scale) or lower. I do protect our youngest daugter with a climbing rope (simultaneous progression), but especially on horizontal sections, save protection is more difficult when the kids are small and cannot get enough grip. Most via ferratas have detailed maps with difficulty levels for each section of the trail (you can see such a map on the video that we will post tomorrow - Martinske hole). Most of them are also available online. Always try to find the map and YT-videos to check the track to get the best possible impression beforehand. Good luck! 👍
@@hikesineurope nice video, the Martinske. It is this spring? And why comments off? :)
Ah … are the comments off …? 🫣 I didn’t know that … I’ll have to check this in that case 😊. We went to Martinske Hole during summer 🌤️
Waw! Super mooi! Zo tof dat jullie dat doen en blijven doen....daar ben ik nu echt eens jaloers van se
great video, thank You! most people say Rysy hike is not for kids, is it for real? Last year we had an amazing hike to Giewont with our 9 and 13 y o, this year we are thinking about Rysy from Slovak side... Is this wish not too brave?
Thank you very much. In our honest opinion, we categorise the Rysy (Slovak side) as a relatively easy mountain, but the personal perception depends on the experience/physics. But when you are used to hike in the mountains, I don’t think you will experience any difficulties. Just bare in mind that it’s quite crowdy 🫣.
Very pristine and calming! Amazingly, the Hohe Fenn are not known in the Americas, but I'm my case I read about them in a travel book and after seeing a couple of pictures, I totally became fascinated because they seem so remote in the very industrial heart of Europe! So, they're in my bucket list on my next trip to Europe! Thanks for sharing! Regards from Nicaragua! ☘️🇳🇮☘️
Which side can I climb without climbing gear?
You can climb both sides (Slovak, Polish) without climbing gear during summer. However, the Slovak side (with a very easy and short chain section) is easier compared to the Polish one.
ran into your channel and wanted to show some support for youtube small channel/hobbyist like myself
Great hike and congrats you did it in one day! 😀 would you mind sharing your starting point coordinates or route? I’m planning to do it in 1 day as well 😀
Thank you. Can you send a private message on our Hikes in Europe instagram account? I’ll send you the route in the chat. Greetings

Bedankt voor de leuke video. Op de videai zijn meerdere kindere naan het klettersteigen. 1 is extra gezekerd.
Groeten, Thomas
Your videos are a true masterpiece, I'm always impressed.
Absolutely breathtaking scenery my friend, wow! This is beyond spectacular 🔥
It seems to me that one can easily get lost there, scenery is truly breathtaking there my friend! Majestic!!! 🔥
No worries for getting lost using a GPS with digital topographic map and trails are well marked in the High Tatras 😊. Great videos you have by the way 😉👌
Nice job with the kids 🙌
Thank you 😉😊
Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I needed after a long and stressful day at work. I recently started a new job, full of changes, and needed focus to improve even outside the working hours. I do love the job, but sometimes it is very difficult and tiring, but then I watch your videos, looking at these amazing experiences I feel more energized and grounded.
