- Singer, actress, model and talent manager Patricia Apollonia Kotero was born and raised in Santa Monica, California but, her parents moved around quite a lot so, she did spend some time in San Fernando and San Pedro. The eldest of four children of Mexican immigrants, she also speaks fluent Spanish and Italian. Her middle name that she would adopt as her stage name came from the Olympian deity in classic Greek and Roman mythology named Apollo, recognized as a god of music and dance, the Sun and light, poetry, and more. At the age of 16, Apollonia would drop out of high school to pursue a career as a model while also working a regular 9 to 5. Her parents were going through a divorce at the time so, her paycheques were a great help to her mother. She would admit, many years later though, that dropping out was the biggest mistake she could have ever done.

If you look at certain artists who were always surrounded by entourage they died alone. And they tried to change the game, Sam Cooke, Michael Jackson, Prince. One thing I always admired about all 3 ladies of Apollonia 6 , when everybody was trying to get rich after he died off of his legacy , the 3 ladies remained respectful to him til this day .

Even though this video is about Apollonia, it's still suspicious how Prince's passing was an "accident" after he got his Masters and tried to give everyone the $$$ they were owed. Good to know she still holds him in high regards.
Please stop with the conspiracy. Addiction is what killed him, fentanyl to be precise. Quite simply put Prince wad addict due to a traumatic childhood he was unable to emotionally heal from. Hence the reason why he number his pain with drugs and alcohol.

I always wondered what it would be like if Vanity was on Purple Rain. I picture her face in the Appolonia scenes. I think she would've done amazing. But Appollonia was amazing.

ALL her songs, especially 'Sex Shooter' was written for Vanity6. There's even a demo of Vanity singing lead here in UA-cam. Even Glamorous Life was written for Vanity.
Everyone knows Prince and Vanity dated, even stating that Vanity was Prince's one and true love. Why they broke up will always be under speculation.
So, to assume that Appollonia did a better job in the role is clearly only opinion, for we'll never know how Vanity would have done.
But one thing is for sure, Vanity had way better stage presence the Apol, more sex appeal, and way better chemistry with Prince, because she did date him.
The movie would have done wayyyyy better (even though it still was a box office smash) with Vanity than with unknown Apol. Apol was popular cause she was pretty, period. Clearly not for talent.
And the 'girl next door' persona is crap. She dressed like a tramp throuh the entire movie....

It probably would’ve been slightly different, maybe feel more authentic, but over all probably feel about the same. The director, and other film people that worked with the director, made the movie good. You can tell the drop in quality when Prince did other movies after Purple Rain.

"Take Me With U" was originally supposed to be on the Apollonia 6 album but Prince pulled it for Purple Rain. Prince wrote "Manic Monday" and this to intended for the Apollonia 6 project as well, but was also pulled and offered to the Bangles a few years later. Apollonia "claims" to have wrote lyrics for a few Prince, but there is no evidence expect for a torn out section of one her notebooks.

Yeah alot of the the facts here are based on claims Apollonia has made but has been disputed and disproven by many other people who were there. She never co-wrote the lyrics for Manic Monday or Glamorous Life - they were written before she was hired to replace Vanity. Apollonia is also not her middle name. Prince gave her that name after the character in the Godfather movie because it signified the "hit by a thunderbolt" feeling when Michael Corleone first saw the Apollonia character in the movie.

At the time Purple Rain was being cast, I saw a blurb in the back of a free Los Angeles paper, The LA Weekly. I remember that Prince specified that the women auditioning had to under '5 4", or something, presumably because of his diminutive stature.

FACTS!!!! Even on the Apollonia 6 album some of the best tracks on there are the ones that don't feature her on lead vocals. "Some Kind of Lover" which is a Brenda solo is my all time favorite from the LP!
I think Prince placed more value on the image marketability aspect, sexy character in a story vibe, over someone’s singing ability.
Apollonia and Vanity definitely weren’t the type of singers who could challenge the likes of Patti LaBelle or Aretha Franklin, etc. but they could sing good enough to make the kind of songs Prince liked and wanted to market, that fit his image aesthetic and vibe. Morris Day wasn’t the best sounding singer either. He wasn’t a Luther Vandross, or Marvin Gaye, but he fit Prince’s image aesthetic, vibe, etc.
