@@brandielee7971 IDK about that one, I remember an infamous 1978 Battlestar Galactica toy that was recalled for firing small projectiles that turned out to be a fatal choking hazard. Dude, all I know is when I hooked up my TMNT pizza shooter to a 9-volt battery, shit got real. Real satisfying. I'm only sorry that it got lost before I could weaponize it further with metal pizza discs.
the idea of Jim Cummings returning to voicee an old character he played in the original Darkwing Duck is actually a misdirection, because it's not DARKWING he's returning to play It's the VILLAIN he played in that show, NEGADUCK, who he returned to portray, and the fact they try and hide that fact until the ending is the big twist AND the misdirect.
@@sarafontanini7051 It's a good thought, though and adds an extra layer of complexity that most people probably haven't realized yet, but it also makes it far more fun to think about.
. . . Umm, the moment they revealed "Drake Mallard" the bait and switch was destroyed. Drake Mallard was Darkwing's Real Name in the old show, and it should be OBVIOUS what was gonna happen from the first moments of the episode.
@@Dargonhuman It's also probably a reference to comics writer Jim Starlin, the creator of Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, and Gamora for Marvel and a key Batman writer for DC. Most notably, he wrote A Death in the Family, the story where Jason Todd was killed. It works on so many levels
Start of episode: there’s no way they can pull this off, getting DW right is impossible Halfway through episode: they’re doing it all wrong, I don’t like Starling’s DW at all End of episode: oh my god they did it, that was FREAKING AMAZING
I got to admit, I felt the same way. I thought they were ruining the character. I thought it would be impossible for them to reconcile the old TV show version of Darkwing with a real version in the same universe. Not only did they give us an amazing new back story to this version of Darkwing, they also did an amazing commentary on reboots in general. Darkwing is not just Jim Cummings. Yes, he was the original, but as long as the spirit and humor is there we can make way for a new actor to take on the role. A new version with a new backstory. And better yet, they gave us a way better back story for Negaduck this go around. If they actually do a full on series I will be on the edge of my seat as the story unfolds. Drake Mallard fighting against his childhood hero, who is possibly pulling strings from the shadows only to be revealed at the end of season 1.
Yes, I loved that part. Letting the audience know that the new Darkwing still has an ego, just not the insane ego Jim Starling has. Drake has all the heroic traits Darkwing needs with a touch of the ego he needs as well. Jim Starling is just a total egomaniac, the worst traits of Darkwing with none of the heroic traits. This was the best possible way to introduce a reboot of Darkwing. They do a tease with the old show featuring Jim Cummings, now a great back story for the hero and main villain. On top of that they gave a back door way to bring in the classic villains even though they were also on the show within the show. Negaduck is a crazed former Darkwing actor. He hates Drake Mallard for stealing his "part". Using his knowledge of his old show, he goes out of his way to create villains based on the characters from the show. So we can have Negaduck behind the scenes orchestrating the creation of various villains, teaching them all of Darkwings moves. Drake spends season 1 fighting his new rogues gallery, unaware of who the mastermind is. Then at the end of season 1, Negaduck and Darkwing face off, Darkwing coming face to face once again with the childhood hero that inspired him who he thought died a hero. OMG, I want to see this happen so badly!
Well the Darkwing character is obviously inspired by Batman to begin with. So to make his arch foe Negaduck more resemble the Joker and his insanity, makes perfect sense really. I love the angle the show is taking.
Jim Starling really wasn't the sanest man before. It does not take one bad day, that is just the Joker desperately trying to tell himself that what he does is in some sense right, it is just one of his delusions.
My favorite line from the episode is "look, I know this movie's not perfect, but I really want to make it better." It made me see it from his perspective, getting the honor of *playing as* a character he's love all his life must be life changing, even if you know the movie's not gonna be good, and he tries his best in his role.
If Darkwing Duck gets it, they have to bring in Jim for his spirit and fierceness as Darkwing then & now, and to be NegaDuck in the future. It would be a great way to celebrate the old & the new alike.
I feel like the bit where Launchpad turned Mrs. Beakley into a Darkwing fan was setting up for connecting Drake Mallard with S.H.U.S.H. since Mrs. B used to be an agent for them
And they can use the F.O.W.L. villains from the old show as antagonist for the new. I'd always imagined Ammonia Pine had an interesting relationship with Mrs. B
Here's an episode pitch: Agents of SHUSH Starring Brandy and Mr. Whiskers, Max Goof, Bonkers Bobcat, the Rescue Rangers, and Maui Mallard (from Cold Shadow).
My theory is Launchpad is going to be offered a job by Drake Mallard by the season finale. Which means Della takes his place as the Duck family pilot. And, this will lead to a Darkwing Duck reboot that takes place in the same universe as DuckTales. For those thinking, "Shouldn't there have been leaks for this little bit of information?", they've been keeping a secret that Della would be returning home earlier than the season finale. Edit: Wow! Thanks for giving my DuckTales theory over 1,000 likes!
I don’t think it will separate out into a spin-off. Even if it does we probably won’t loose Launchpad. This new Darkwing lives in Duckberg. Like the rest of the cast. So even if Launchpad starts assisting him, he would still be in the same city and able to interact with the old cast. My bet is that DW will just be a side-character on Ducktales. Nothing more.
I love that idea, and it would fit. With Della being so angry that Scrouge got a new pilot. But the creators have also been hinting at another way they can make it work. Lauchpad has been going off on dangerous adventures with old flings in several episodes. He could just go off and help out Drake Mallard when he doesn't have screen time. And then they casually hint that's what he's doing in a throwaway line.
It's possible they'll pull a Loud House and have the Darkwing Duck spinoff just be part of the show. Every few episodes it'll switch to St. Cunard and have Drake and Launchpad do shit.
Umm, they already released the episode involving della's return and Donald's "trip". But I believe they won't make a separate spinoff series for Darkwing, but keep it as an in universe B plot following Darkwing and Launchpad. Since this show is called Ducktales this show could easily just follow different ducks for episodes. Also fun fact, Jim Cummings really loved playing negaduck more than Darkwing so in the reboot this is a dream come true for him. Oh and with Negaduck showing up, he might try to create other villains from his old show in duckberg. I bet that, Louie will win that bet made by Scrooge and Glomgold *Duke Baloney* since the bet was specifically: "The business to make the most money, wins the losers company" and Louie would have known about it. Scrooge would be distraught but unlike Glomgold... He'd be able to make it back. Glomgold on the other hand would snap after losing his company, possibly resulting in him gaining a new mental state. That of one similar to.... Quackerjack. While one of the beagle boys, I would say Big Time due to his want to impress or be better than his mother. Would become a new Liquidator. If so that would make 3 of the Fearsome Five. Last being a Megavolt and a Bushroot. Those two, I have no idea who would take those places unless they decided to change things up a bit. Like have the Black Heron return but somehow mutated into a plant like Bushroot if she survived that fall, or having Mark Beaks turn into a new Megavolt equivalent.
@@katherinealvarez9216 Not necessarily, considering the show likes to reveal adapted but changed characters at the very end, revealing Gosalyn early would reveal his identity too early.
This is a reboot done right. If only more people understood why. It's one thing to be skeptical of fan backlash before a beloved story/icon is brought back. It's another thing to mock fans after betraying their trust.
That's my only issue with the whole video here: I don't care if you are a fan of the original thing; that doesn't mean your new ideas are a good thing! TTG, new PPG, and the soon-to-be new Thundercats are all being made by 'fans' who have awful ideas and should NOT be in charge of any productions!
@@Jennie-qy5ps actually the guy making thundercats. Isnt a fan. He was bullied by his older brothers. Who were fans. Hes a fat, sweaty manbun who wasted his folks money and is considered fat and woke enough to work for these greasy companies.
"You could do this for real. Gizmoduck does." "I -am- better than Gizmoduck." A small but nice nod to how DW was often competetive against Gizmo when the latter crossed over to his show.
How good was this episode? Where do I begin?! First off, the buildup throughout both seasons really gave this episode a powerful impact. As you said, it's a great way to introduce new audiences to Darkwing without making him feel shoehorned for fan service, while still making him feel like he can exist within the new Ducktales universe. Plus, having Launchpad fill in as an audience surrogate for older Disney Afternoon fans certainly helps. Second, its social commentary. It does a great job exploring the struggles of making reboots, such as why the new creator/director needs to understand the source material and why people enjoyed it in the first place. The same goes for fans, at least certain fans, needing to learn to accept changes in reboots and understand how the actors/producers feel while working on these projects. Third, the casting choices of the two Darkwings. To add to my previous point, since this episode was partially made with older Disney Afternoon fans in mind, having Jim Cummings play the older Darkwing actor nails the episode's commentary on reactions to changes in a reboot. It not only provides the nostalgia with Jim's classic voice, but also illustrates how people can't think of anyone else playing their favorite character besides the original actor. Having somebody else play Jim Starling in this case wouldn't have made the commentary nearly as strong as having Jim return. Speaking of actors, I also really liked Chris Diamantopoulos as the new Darkwing. He did a great job at not only giving a similar vibe to Jim's original voice, but also doing his own thing with a beloved character. I especially loved his performance during the trailer scene and the climax/ending. Heck, with the way those scenes played out, I wouldn't be surprised if Jim saw himself in the new Drake's position. I mean we are talking about a voice actor that had to take over roles previously done by other voice actors he admired (i.e. Winnie the Pooh for Sterling Holloway and Tigger for Paul Winchell). Finally, the big twists. No matter how many times I see them, I still get excited when they happen (Just like Launchpad at the beginning of this episode). Once the new Darkwing revealed his name to be Drake Mallard, I was thinking to myself 'Well played, Ducktales crew!' I also loved the final shots that lead to Negaduck's reveal. Seeing the purple dye liquid flowing into the sewer and off of Jim Starling's Darkwing costume was chilling enough. But when he turned around to reveal his new colors, I was completely ecstatic! Whatever Frank and co. have got in store for the new Darkwing and Negaduck, I absolutely cannot wait to see it. Also, seeing reboot-Megavolt look like Bane from "The Dark Knight Rises" was hilarious.
New Negaduck reminds me of that Lazy Town fan theory that Robbie Rotten is the previous Sporticus gone rogue. It double the shear comedy of the situation to me.
One of my favorite parts of this, is that it how Drake's backstory basically mirrors what we seen in the original series. In both cases, Darkwing Duck inspires a dweeby little to be a better person, a hero... eventually becoming the hero that inspired him.
There were actually a couple of different origin stories in different episodes in the original series as they also made fun of the Superman origin in an episode.
He's had several origins. At one point, he's given multiple origins in the same episode. (Including the aforementioned Superman parody.) There's also an episode where Drake has a HS reunion and you find out that he was classmates with Megavolt and they were both bullied. There had been a school dance and stuff happens and Megavolt is created and starts terrorizing the dance, so Drake takes on the Darkwing persona to save the other students.
And apparently if the series had continued they had plans for even more mutually contradictory origin stories. Really seems like a strength of the character; unlike a lot of superheroes, his origin really isn't important, so you have room to play around with it.
@@KingOfElectricNinjas There's also just the fact that the character is largely comedic. The multiple origins are a way of poking fun at the superhero origin story.
I mean, now that Della is back being the McDuck pilot *And she refuses to let anyone take her spot* this would mean Launchpad would distance himself from the McDuck family helping Drake more than them.
Let's not forget that they also referenced Cape Suzette and even brought in Don Carnage and the sky pirates. Talespin reboot perhaps? Also, that scene with the piano. Did anyone else catch the opening notes to Darkwing's theme song?
True, but that would mean Dewey's re-interpretations are either Zack Snyder's or Joel Schumacher's Batman. To be honest, I've always thought Dewey in this series' Canon could probably become a Movie Producer with his active mind and need for attention, but if he were to grow up a little more, he strikes me as a producer in the vain of Tim Burton, weird and edgy to the point of spectacle rather than gritty like Snyder or campy like Schumacher.
That was, ironically, the only part I didn’t like. As an ardent Batman and superhero fan, I’ve seen these exact jokes hundreds of times before. I mean, I hate the Nolan trilogy as much as the next girl (actually I probably hate it more than the next girl) but I am also sick of hearing people rip on it. The jokes are just tiered. The only original-ish joke was the bit where they referenced the Daredevil logo with the fire.
I found it sweet that they named the new Darkwing Duck "Drake Mallard", after the civillian name of the original. It could lead to expand upon the family themes of DuckTales.
I feel like not enough people are talking about “The Duck Knight Returns”. The writing was very strong and amazingly clever that it didn’t feel overwhelming and lead to a brilliant payoff that dead-ass left me teary-eyed by the end. Ty for this thoughtful essay, and I hope more people talk about this ep. I can not recommend this ep enough and sing its praises enough. 10/10 🙌🏽😭😭😁👊🏽
This episode is also heavily inspired by the Batman the Animated series episode: Beware the Grey Ghost, where Batman/Bruce Wayne teams meets and teams up with the actor that played his childhood hero. Including flashback scenes of young Bruce in a Gray Ghost hat watching TV like how young Drake was in a Darkwing hat watching TV. Gray Ghost is voiced by Adam West the classic Batman, just like classic Darkwing is voiced by Jim Cummings.
2 things: 1. I disagree with the assertion that when these studios reboot a property that means that they are usually big fans of said property. All too often we have seen where a lot of them do this usually to cash in on the earlier success or are doing it as a kneejerk reaction because something similar is popular at the moment. 2. I'm surprised that you didn't mention how Jim Starling being caught in the blast of the Negabolt movie prop was a reference to the old episode where Negabolt used a canon on Darkwing that caused him to split into 2 personalities: the good one and the evil one. Even still, you did an awesome job on this vid and it shows that you really did your homework researching it. You've just earned yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the great work!!
Yeah your first point is definitely a big red flag against this video. Sure fans of the series may be involved with the project, but that isn't why the project is taken on. The project is taken on because a lot of people are fans and it will/should generate money. If it is good, that's a plus, but what really matters is just that it makes money. To quote Mark Hamill, "It doesn't have to be good; it just has to make money," he ignores the fact that the movie being made in the show really wasn't good. At all. The new fans (dewey) didn't like it and the old fans (Launchpad) didn't like it either. You can't ignore that. Sure the actor may be a fan and may feel blessed that they are in the movie and maybe it will inspire some people, but it wont be as good as the original and will quickly fall by the wayside. We see this pop up in the new Star Wars movie (also made by Disney. Perhaps this episode was tangentially touching on the fan backlash of that franchise?). John Boyega, who plays Finn, is a massive SW fan as is his mother. However, that doesn't matter when people watch the movies. Episode 7 was decent but a rehash that a lot of people quickly forgot and Episode 8, whether you think it's great or not, severely splintered the fanbase. It doesn't matter if fans are actors on the project. If a movie is bad, it is bad. Look at the DCEU movies. Those too have been panned by fans of older media in DC complaining that it isn't portraying the characters correctly. And they were right. Batman was killing people, Superman never smiled, Flash was... whatever Ezra Miller was, and Cyborg was too forgetful. This episode, and thus this review, doesn't actually touch on the quality of the reboot past probably the first 3rd. It first points out the reboot isn't good by any standard, but when Launchpad meets the actor, it quickly switches to putting Launchpad in the wrong and somehow because the actor is a fan of the original, it makes a soulless reboot okay because the actor also wants to inspire children. That's an admirable goal, yes, but Launchpad is still correct: it is not a good portrayal of the character. This is a wonderful episode and I can tell that from the review. Though I did see the Negaduck twist coming once the fight started and there are some issues with actor-becomes-superhero since... well, everyone would know his identity and he'd be breaking the law taking it into his hands, so he'd be arrested. But logic aside, good episode; I just feel like the 'moral' doesn't actually apply to Hollywood reboots in its current state and I can't help but feel that they are using it in an attempt to defend the parent company, Disney, from criticism (Seeing as they are the reboot kings at the moment)
I also agree. Most remakes are cash grabs, or add things that they think audiences want to see, such as making the story really dark or, more recently, making it more "diverse".
Yea, I was questioning that part of the review too, thinking back to the Ghostbusters 2016 debacle and the backlash against the Star Trek and Star Wars reboots (I'm counting Discovery and the new SW trilogy as reboots for the sake of conversation) in particular, and for the most part, those backlashes were justified, especially when the studios and actors involved went out of their way to antagonize the fans who were speaking up. It's gotten to the point that it's safer to take a jaded look at reboots as fans just because of the long history of bad and purposefully contentious reboots in the past. Though, in the episode's defense, there was some pushback for the Nolan Batman reboot that they're parodying here, but that one turned out to be one the rare good reboots.
@@xaayer This comment hits the nail right on the head. Some reboots might be made with love, but mostly for money. Especially if it's Di$ney. Just look at the terrible live action "remakes"
@@Dargonhuman Look at those poor boys of 80s/90s cartoons getting "rebooted". The classic get sh*t on meanwhile the "creators get praised for not knowing the source material and just creating fan fiction..
I was shocked how they showed other then darkwing but retold the story of negaduck.. That ending blew my mind and still blows my mind, I was very young when this show originally came out but I loved it, I'm hyped for the darkwing duck reboot.
Great review. As a massive Darkwing Duck fan who considers it among the best TV series of all time, this episode was just straight up 10/10. The jokes, the themes, the references and easter eggs (it's honestly kind of ridiculous how many there are), the story, and especially the characters were done brilliantly. I honestly couldn't find a single fault with this episode as a fan of the original series. It is just that good. If this episode doesn't lead to a rebooted Darkwing Duck show, I will be incredibly disappointed. One thing I liked about the revised origin story for Darkwing is that the new origin is in essence not that different from the original series. There is one episode where Darkwing goes back in time to when he was just a small child, and while he is in that time period he inspires himself to become a hero in the future. It is a massive time paradox, but it is still very fitting and hilarious at the same time. The reworked origin is of course pretty different, but it retains that same spirit, and that to me shows a level of care when crafting this episode that I have rarely seen in reboots. As an old fan, the showrunners get my seal of approval.
here's a bit of trivia maybe an Easter egg or piece of trivia. Jim Starlin is the name of the writer of Batman a death in the family where Jason Todd dies
This feels like a more thoroughly developed, in-universe take on "Beware the Gray Ghost." For those unfamiliar it was a season 1 episode of Batman: The Animated Series in which Adam West plays actor Simon Trent. Trent was "The Gray Ghost," a Shadow-like TV character who has fallen on hard times due to decades of being typecast. Bruce watched the show as a kid and it had some effect when designing his costume, gadgets, and the Batcave. Not unlike how the Shadow inspired Bob Kane and Bill Finger. This had a lot more thought put into it and is a brilliant, beautiful way introduce a real hero into the series. Now we've got Cyborg who suits up more like Iron Man, and Batman. Slowly building to the Duckstice League.

You said it beautifully about how fans react. I had a feeling the actor's name was Drake, cause of the background origin comic of how Darkwing inspired him had Drake's bully from the original cartoon. I also thought Jim was pulling double duty as Jim Starling and Drake Mallard, to find out it was someone else voicing Drake blew my mind. I think DW is in good hands... well vocal chords.
Tad Stones playing a character saying he's never heard of Darkwing Duck is super hilarious, and what a great meta joke that is LOL. The CREATOR of Darkwing Duck basically said he's never heard of it xD. Man this show is clever. Even as a super-fan of the original Darkwing Duck show (so I'm like Launchpad, who would love things to be the same as they were before), I still approve of how they handled him in this episode, because I feel like they nailed the essence of Darkwing very well. This IS Darkwing Duck, through and through, as well as Negaduck. They got both of them right. That's some amazing talent and skill and I'll always love this show because of that.
I noticed the Daredevil reference. Fun fact. The name Jim Starling most likely is a reference to comics legend Jim Starlin, known for his work on comics that inspired the creation of Darkwing Duck, such as Batman, Daredevil, Dracula (Dracula Lives), Doctor Strange, and many other crime-noir type stories spanning 3 different publishers since the 1970s.
I was wondering that about the Jim Starling name myself, like, "huh, that's a subtle and somewhat obscure reference, but even more awesome for being so subtle and obscure."
That's what I just said. Launchpad was happy to see him, indicating that he used to work for Scrooge and that this is the same universe, but that his time with Darkwing is after his time with Scrooge.
Despite what Tad Stones said in 2016, the original Darkwing Duck cartoon did present itself as though it did take place in the same universe as the original DuckTales cartoon. I'm surprised that you found this to be confusing since the original DuckTales was a product of the 80s while Darkwing Duck came out in the 90s. By the time Darkwing Duck began airing on The Disney Afternoon, DuckTales was over and airing only reruns. It's easy to see Darkwing Duck as a show taking place entirely after DuckTales was over, with Launchpad's enhanced competence easy to explain as a sign of character growth between the two shows. Plus, in Gizmoduck's chronologically first appearance in Darkwing Duck, "Tiff of the Titans", he comes to St. Canard from Duckburg (which even features a big billboard with Scrooge McDuck's face on it) and shows up at Drake's and Launchpad's place as Fenton Crackshell. Launchpad and Fenton are shown to already know each other, Launchpad introduces Fenton to Drake as his "old pal from Duckburg", Fenton namedrops McDuck Manor, and Launchpad says "Fenton and I used to work for the same guy." The first episode of Darkwing Duck also has Launchpad flying his old biplane from DuckTales before he upgrades to the Thunderquack, and numerous tie-in comics (both vintage and modern) published for both Darkwing Duck and the original DuckTales have further tied the two shows together by positioning Darkwing Duck as taking place after DuckTales. One epic five-part comic story from Disney Adventures magazine, titled "The Legend of the Chaos God" (scans of which are available to read online), even boldly attempted to place TaleSpin, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, and Goof Troop all in the same shared universe as DuckTales and Darkwing Duck as well, which I think is pretty awesome.
Allistiar Boorswan didnt seem like a fan of Darkwing despite directing the movie. He doesnt recognise the OG DW actor and tried to make the movie as non-child friendly as possible.

I also really love how this episode touches on how to reconcile the love of a series that's defined part of your identity and a lead actor that's become problematic. With so many stories coming out about famous people these days, it's not uncommon for people to have to consider that the actors that brought to life their favorite characters aren't good people. It can lead to a feeling of guilt for still enjoying the thing that meant so much all those years ago. I think it's a great lesson that no matter who the actors that played your favorite characters turn out to be, it doesn't change what that character meant to you. It's not somehow wrong to be inspired and driven by lessons you learned from a childhood role model, just because the actors were awful people offscreen.
if i'm not mistaken in the Ducktales reboot they've actually also made mention of both Saint Canard and Cape Suzette, Saint Canard being from Darkwing Duck, but Cape Suzette is from Talespin, now all we need them to do is name drop Spoonerville and we'll have most of the disney afternoon. Spoonerville being the setting for Goof Troop..
The Duck Knight Returns was such a meta episode. Launchpad's line about high-budget reboots was literally the best thing I could have never imagined him saying at that pointm

First things first, I LOVE DARKWING DUCK. I was born in 1992, DuckTales and Darkwing Duck was my absolute favourite Disney show. still is! I totally missed this whole REBOOT. I want to personally Thank YOU! while i was watching this, i was singing the DuckTales theme song, When you i realised Drake was the Fan at the start my palm uncontrollably clapped together like a walrus lol. The MOMENT! The DarkWing Duck Cliff Hanger was revealed, i just YELLED and had to go back 2 mins to rewatch... At that moment i realised, thats the Last thing i remember about DarkWing. I REMEMBER NegaDuck (Yellow DarkWing) and that there was 2!!!!! DarkWing Ducks!..... AS @Seaniccus goes on to REVEAL the final outcome of now DuckTales haveing a DarkWing Duck and Launch Pad ASWELL as a NegaDuck! I AM SOOOOO HAPPY RIGHT NOW! I CANT WAIT TO GO WATCH! i know i this was Disney's Story not @Seaniccus's! I Want to thank the Writers of these EPISODES! WHOEVER made the REBOOT Possible! AND @Seaniccus for his NARRATIVE!
I also loved Edgar Wright as Alistair Boorswan- a tribute and a "Take That" to the "Grim & Gritty" sensibilities of Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder. And whattaya know? He was right! "That was the PERFECT end! The hero grappling with his dark id in a cleansing rain..." Shame that the whole knock-down drag-out between Darkwing Duck as the noble hero and Darkwing Duck as the egomaniacal show-boating vigilante was lost because Dewey wanted to film himself dancing "The Perfect Cast." Yeah... Dewey's doing the dance from "A Goofy Movie," just like he was jamming with his mom to a PowerLine tune in "Raiders Of The Doomsday Vault!"
From now on whenever someone asks me why they should give the new Ducktales cartoon a chance, or why one should give [most] reboots/remakes a chance: I'm recommending this beautiful 20 minute video essay.
Kinda surprised you didn't mention Drake's new voice a bit more. Nice video still. PS: Donald appeared in safety videos from Disney in the past. Also, did you notice Amphibia yet?
I could have made a 40+ minute video if I talked about everything I wanted to in this one! I think Chris is doing a great job with the voice, though. It has enough Jim Cummings tone in it to sound familiar, but is also it's new thing.
Someone else already connected Della as the returning Duck Family pilot to Launchpad getting a new job with Drake Mallard, but I kind of hope they also lean into the hint that Starling's obsession with Launchpad might turn the whole damsel-in-distress/sidekick (also usually in distress) thing on it's head with Negaduck pursuing Laucnhpad trying to get him on his side. Also the Gizmoduck vs Darkwing Duck rivalry and reluctant teaming up when a bigger threat shows up I AM SO EXCITED!!!
I didn't go anywhere, I just didn't have free time to make videos for awhile. Work at my day job just got really busy! It still is! I barely had time to make this one! I'm glad I made time for it.
Very solid review of the episode, and I agree that the Ducktales crew clearly took their time to set it up and do it right, going to the original creative team and doing their best to incorporate the material into their new setting in a respectful way. It's one reason why I think that episode isn't just criticizing fans, but everything that goes into a re-make/reboot. I'd go so far as to say that of anything, the fans are criticized the least, since ultimately Launchpad and Drake are proven to be the ones in the right. Drake got involved with the project because of his love for the franchise and hopes to use his position to course correct the worst aspects of it. Launchpad's love for the franchise is shown to be completely pure and genuine, his only fault is that he lets that love get taken advantage of by others. The pair's love for the franchise is, if anything, shown to be endearing and a source of strength. Otherwise the folks that get the most criticism are the director and Jim. The director is clearly a parody of guys like Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer, Zack Snyder, Ryan Johnson and Michael Bay, who purposefully take old franchises and intentionally change them to suit their own biases without regard for the history of the franchise or its core elements. They make the films darker and more violent, they intentionally subvert expectations, they dumb it down and sex it up to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Meanwhile Jim showcases the folks that will intentionally exploit people's nostalgia and love for franchises to satisfy their own egos and to get what they want. They don't actually care about the fans or the franchise, but will offer the promise of what the fans love without intending to deliver. It also clearly shows that some people will happily reboot a franchise without really caring about it. The director doesn't really have any love for the Darkwing franchise, and it shows in his approach. But it was something that was popular once, so it has a built in target demographic and is otherwise something a studio owns that could be making them money, but isn't. It's like how the last Predator film was basically a parody of itself and spent 15 minutes with the characters talking about how "Predator" is a stupid name for the alien. There's a reason why both Drake and Launchpad are both sympathetic while the director is pretty much never sympathetic, while Jim has brief moments of sympathy. Jim at least clearly cared about the franchise at some point, and lost his way due to his own egotism, and a reminder of what the franchise meant to him briefly brings him back to his senses. The director has no such moments of clarity.
I love the other setups the show did before this episode: 1) The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee - establishing that there is to much crime in Duckburg for one hero 2) Raiders of the Doomsday Vault - setting Della as the familys new pilot, freeing Launchpad’s schedule for crime fighting 3?) Friendship Hates Magic - making Mrs Beakley a huge DarkWing fan, giving him an entry point into S.H.U.S.H. (OK, this one might be going to far)
This is a fantastic synopsis of the triage of this specific reboot, reboots in general and what this channel is all about. This was masterfully worded and I loved every second.
9:53 The "Adventures" thing could also be a reference to the tie-in comics DC published for their animated series. Each one had a title with the word "Adventures" in it to differentiate it from the mainline comics. It's a trend they've continued with any tie-in to the DCAU, with the new digital release "Batman: The Adventures Continue" being the newest to use it.
The fact that there is a Darkwing reboot still supposedly in the works makes me hopeful that maybe we can still comeback to this Duck universe that we love so much. But unfortunately, it’s going on 4 years since the reboot’s announcement, and there haven’t been many major updates since 2022.
OMG *lol* NegaDuck. One of my all time fav villains from the original TV show. From him being a alternate-world version of Darkwing, to being the actual Negative Personality of Darkwing.. They even tossed in the original Characters name from Darkwing Duck Drake Mallard. It's almost like they're setting up the Original TV show in the 'real' world with Drake being Dark Wing Duck for real and the TV show we grew up watching-is 'his' life, after becoming DarkWing. And since 'Drake Mallard' and Lunchpad are friends it would also explain how it was he came to tag along on DW's misadventures. It also seems a bit of a secret nod to the Batman TV show in where Bruce watches an old TV show called the Grey Ghost-and is himself inspired by the show in the manufacturing of his gadgets and Batman himself.
Now, after the Let's Get Dangerous episode, I would love to hear your thoughts on the Darkwing Duck reboot. Me personally, both while watching The Duck Knight Returns and Let's Get Dangerous, I was sobbing with joy at almost every scene.
@@victorhernandez8723 someone said in one of their videos but the guy voicing the director was the director of Ant-Man I don't know if the simple is true but that makes it really funny
Hey, this just means they won't have to hire more voice-actors for when we inevitably see the Justice Ducks... ya KNOW they're gonna replace Stegmutt with Storkules as the team Dumb Muscle. Though if we've got a new version of Gandra Dee, it's dollars to dog-biscuits we're also gonna get a new Morgana Macawber.
Trokon Hufnagel the grew of this show sure do like Chris Diamantopoulos, in fact they wanted to use mickey mouse for the series (but unfortunately the can do it) and have chris to be the voice instead of Bret Iwan
I wonder how long they'll take to add Gosalyn to the canon. After all, if Drake Mallard represents all the good parts of Darkwing, that has to include being a father. On a related note, what are the odds of them pulling Goofy in for a cameo? They are fond of including Disney Afternoon references after all, and Goof Troop was a part of that. I'd also love to see Rescue Rangers make an appearance, given Donald's connection to Chip and Dale.
Spoonerville was mentioned by name in the first episode and they had a Powerline song make a cameo appearance. Also, the Sport Goofy in Soccermania special was essentially the Ducktales pilot episode.
This is such a great review. It is clear that you've spent a lot of time on this, and your vast knowledge really stitches it all together really nicely! Great observations and opinions about it all too :)
I can’t wait for this episode to premiere!! I feel in love with Darkwing Duck a few years ago and since then I have read the comics and watched the two volumes on dvd. ( hope they release a third since the fourth vol for Ducktales was released) I really enjoy your content Seaniccus and have loved your Ducktales videos. Can’t wait for more 😁
This episode has so many lines that are just pure comedy gold: "Launchpad: WHAT?! I never saw THAT coming! Dewey: Wait, haven't you seen this episode? Launchpad: Seventy-five times. But, never in a parking lot." "Launchpad: That was not Darkwing Duck! DW'd never hurt innocent people or set the city on fire! Not on purpose! Boorswan: But are we all not both the heroes and villains of our own story? Launchpad: What? I don't... What??" "Boorswan: What did you do to my psychological masterpiece?! Dewey: I added chainsaw jugglers. You're welcome." "Launchpad: HELP! I'M TRAPPED IN A PRISON OF GUILT! Actor: FEAR NOT, HELPLESS - Oh, hey, it's you! I, I heard your cries and I freed you...from my... trailer? Wh-what're you doing in my trailer?"
Season 2 solidified that Disney found the perfect group of people to reboot DuckTales. I can not wait to see what fun little Easter Eggs and references to Disney’s past will be in Season 3!
I really loved this storyline. How the hero we grew up with (for the ones who lived the 90s like Launchpad) is an old actor of a Superhero Tv show whoes personality become distorted by his own ambitions (and totally lost it by seeing himself be replaced with a younger actor) in a way the creators of the remake of Ducktales both given homage to the old series and recognized their role as a "new" show. I was really feeling for Jim Starling as he was trying as the original to take back what it was his own: The role of Darkwing Duck (a role he dedicated all of himself and the only real recognized success in his career). But at the same time we feel for Drake Mallard the new younger "sharper" actor who is genuinely a good character and show the traits we loved in Darkwing Duck .It was really touching seeing for a moment Jim lower the chainsaw and see his own reflection realizing How much he changed from the image of a Hero. And how he then turned into Negaduck. Leaving like this the role of "good" guy to Drake and taking the mantle of the villain. (This origin for me was better than the original story of Negaduck)
It’s interesting to note that Drake Mallard in the Original Darkwing Duck series of the 1990s is what the titular character’s real identity had been named, this episode appears to have a similar plot to an episode of that series with Drake Mallard (a Darkwing Duck fan who closely resembles Jim Starling) being inspired to become the Terror who Flaps Into Night himself.
I still can't get over the fact that the toy that forges Launchpad and Drake's friendship was banned for being TOO dangerous. _Ironic._
I believe, but could be wrong, that it's spoofing a Boba Fett toy that was also banned for the exact same type of mechanism and reason
Very ironic...VERRRRY ironic.

the idea of Jim Cummings returning to voicee an old character he played in the original Darkwing Duck is actually a misdirection, because it's not DARKWING he's returning to play
It's the VILLAIN he played in that show, NEGADUCK, who he returned to portray, and the fact they try and hide that fact until the ending is the big twist AND the misdirect.
But brilliantly executed.

It works on so many levels
Start of episode: there’s no way they can pull this off, getting DW right is impossible
Halfway through episode: they’re doing it all wrong, I don’t like Starling’s DW at all
End of episode: oh my god they did it, that was FREAKING AMAZING
Excuse me. Are we the same person?
I saw most if not all of the Negaduck foreshadowing and didn't think they'd actually go there. Man was I so happy to be wrong.
Darkwing duck is a symbol
I felt the same way through the episode! And I like it even more now after this video
"Yeah, I'm better then gizmo duck" we have a real dark wing duck over here.

Jim Starling really wasn't the sanest man before. It does not take one bad day, that is just the Joker desperately trying to tell himself that what he does is in some sense right, it is just one of his delusions.

@@Dimensioneer88 Huh, I had an idea for a Goof Troop reboot with Max and his friends being spies.
I think it would be a side episode situation and which they would have a couple episodes of the Ducktales and then an episode of Darkwing Duck

A small but nice nod to how DW was often competetive against Gizmo when the latter crossed over to his show.
New Negaduck is like Reverse-Flash meets the Joker with that scene, and I love it.
New Negaduck reminds me of that Lazy Town fan theory that Robbie Rotten is the previous Sporticus gone rogue. It double the shear comedy of the situation to me.
Little trivia Jim Starling is the name of the writer of Batman: A death in the family the 4 issue story where the 2nd Robin (Jason Todd) dies
One of my favorite parts of this, is that it how Drake's backstory basically mirrors what we seen in the original series. In both cases, Darkwing Duck inspires a dweeby little to be a better person, a hero... eventually becoming the hero that inspired him.
Not only that- young child-Drake is dressed the same, if my memory serves me right.
Now with 100% less bootstrap paradox!
In the original cartoon, Darkwing Duck traveled back in time to inspire his past child self in the episode Paraducks.
Good Point
I mean, now that Della is back being the McDuck pilot *And she refuses to let anyone take her spot* this would mean Launchpad would distance himself from the McDuck family helping Drake more than them.
I like how the drake origin is that as a child he was inspired by dark wing duck. Like in that back to future episode.

Just like to mention this episode's brilliant satire of Christopher Nolan, expertly voiced by his friend and fellow filmmaker Edgar Wright.
@@time391 Oh definitely Jon Peters/Joel Schumacher, the musical number Dewey tries to through in proves that part.

@@jennifergriel861 Daredevil stole that idea from the crow.
I found it sweet that they named the new Darkwing Duck "Drake Mallard", after the civillian name of the original. It could lead to expand upon the family themes of DuckTales.

2 things:
To quote Mark Hamill, "It doesn't have to be good; it just has to make money,"
he ignores the fact that the movie being made in the show really wasn't good.

Yep

I also thought Jim was pulling double duty as Jim Starling and Drake Mallard, to find out it was someone else voicing Drake blew my mind. I think DW is in good hands... well vocal chords.
Oh god...watching Launchpad glance back and forth from Ms Beakley to the DW show is every kid who ever tried to introduce their parents to anime.

@@mochapoetics WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAAAAAME?!

I wasn't thinking it, actually, but now I am.
And you're not wrong.
Launchpad and Fenton are shown to already know each other, Launchpad introduces Fenton to Drake as his "old pal from Duckburg", Fenton namedrops McDuck Manor, and Launchpad says "Fenton and I used to work for the same guy."
The first episode of Darkwing Duck also has Launchpad flying his old biplane from DuckTales before he upgrades to the Thunderquack, and numerous tie-in comics (both vintage and modern) published for both Darkwing Duck and the original DuckTales have further tied the two shows together by positioning Darkwing Duck as taking place after DuckTales.

Yay!!
I love the other setups the show did before this episode:
1) The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee - establishing that there is to much crime in Duckburg for one hero
2) Raiders of the Doomsday Vault - setting Della as the familys new pilot, freeing Launchpad’s schedule for crime fighting
3?) Friendship Hates Magic - making Mrs Beakley a huge DarkWing fan, giving him an entry point into S.H.U.S.H. (OK, this one might be going to far)
This is a fantastic synopsis of the triage of this specific reboot, reboots in general and what this channel is all about. This was masterfully worded and I loved every second.
How ironic...

Now we need an actual Darkwing Duck Spin-off Reboot from that episode
It’s interesting to note that Drake Mallard in the Original Darkwing Duck series of the 1990s is what the titular character’s real identity had been named, this episode appears to have a similar plot to an episode of that series with Drake Mallard (a Darkwing Duck fan who closely resembles Jim Starling) being inspired to become the Terror who Flaps Into Night himself.
