Hello Dr. Daithi, I watched this video completely but it does not giving information how did you organize that powerpoint page to include so many images. On the other hand, you only showed how to upload image from Excel, can you please make a complete video from 1st to last including everything for example; the specific dimension of ppt and also adding other source of images such as jepg format....please
Can you please help me to how to edit figures by using PowerPoint and making the labels and titles
beautiful explanation, beautiful models, and beautiful teacher haha
Glad you think so!🥳
Your video formats are increasingly becoming more engaging, buddy! Great insights. And nice figures! I have PCA plots coming up in the not sooo distant future :D
Also, just wondering why you don't use GraphPad?
Hey! We were actively encouraged not to use GraphPad in our Uni, which comes in handy doing manual functions on the off chance you're stuck without it for some time!

Hi! Great video. I was wondering if you could explain how you organized your figures in that background. Is that PowerPoint or Illustrator? After reading some comments, I think we would like to see how you organized your figures from a standard PowerPoint slide to that 8x11 sheet? Also, what software do you use for your figures? GraphPad? That information would be great to make good figures for publication. Thank you!
Hu Juan, just PowerPoint, no other software whatsoever.
@ Thank you!
I am afraid Excel 2010 does not have such options... But this is a lifesaver! Until I upgrade to Office 2013
Hi my friend! That you for watching and commenting! There are variations of this in Excel 10 to do the same functions, they functions are in just different tabs! It took me a bit of searching too! :)
Your video is very helpful.
Please explain that how we can arrange and scale multiple microscopic images in paper
Hey Sefali, thanks so much for the view and kind comment! The trick is to have your microscope software using a consistent scale bar. In PowerPoint you can exactly replicate this scale bar tot the pixel for accuracy in between pictures as a reference tool. This may be stricker guidelines based on your university or journal you are targeting, but at minimum it's a handy and accurate tool for aligning images
Hi there, do you compile your figures in PP or do you use Illustrator or similar? I always did the former but colleagues tell me illustrator is easier in the long term.
Hi Gillson, illustrator might well be easier but I've always made up the bulk of my figures in PowerPoint. I found it fast accurate and easy so why change - I'm really a very old stubborn man at heart 😂 can never hurt to try illustrator if you think there might be benefits, bear in mind, some journals re-edit your illustrations for free by professionals.
How did you format your ppt slide to arrange figures?
The ruler option and guideline function really helps!
5:40 are you doing it on PowerPoint?
Yes sir!
Hey Dr Daithí,
Loved this video, it was super informative and enjoyable. I am starting my dissertation this year for my 4th year of my MPharm degree, any tips on what project to choose or tips on writing up? I've never been good with essays, always scored below 70. :/
My sister did her MPharm degree so she would be better placed to tell you 👌 👍 I have a video from 2020 where I discuss writing tips on dissertations in general but the discussion is heavily applicable towards PhD students so I'm not sure if the overlaying message applys - I think this is the one ua-cam.com/video/QHCcLZ8QpQU/v-deo.html sorry the dissertation was so many moons ago it's hard to remember 🤣😅 hope it helps and listen, if you have any specific questions just give me a shout on here or DM me on Instagram
Which software do you suggest for making diagrams?
I went simple, Microsoft PowerPoint! If your article gets accepted, on occasion they can get a professional to touch up a key bit of artwork
@ Does Inkscape have pre-made images like Biorender??
Please also make a video for undergraduates on how to write a review article?
Hi Mehwish, great suggestion, I actually did make one previously and couldn't do it justice by remaking one so let me know what you think: ua-cam.com/video/okMqJUP_ows/v-deo.html
appreciate it! What about tips regarding drawing figures, e.g the human figure you drew? Is that just practicing digital art and drawing skills? Thanks!
My friend, the best tip I can give you on drawing figures like the human figure is this - step one: go out, have a great time, get drunk. Step two: the next morning realise you are not mentally prepared for experiments or research. Step three: open up Microsoft PowerPoint, sketch in pencil a rough image that you want done, take a pic and email it to yourself, drag and drop to PowerPoint. Trace around it and use the fill tool, crop out half of the image and mirror the same half to make it identical on the other half (make sense?). Use the rest of the day hunting pain killers and slowly increasing the quality of the image you have just make, labelling and perfecting the figure legend! That's how it is done, don't skip step 1, the hangover is important for creativity! Best of luck my friend!
@ HAHAHAHA YES I love this. As a fellow PhD student I am quite versed in step 1 and 2. And thanks for the tip! So simple but so genius. Draw. Copy. Trace.
BioRender is the software you should look into!
Which software are you demonstrating with?
Simple excel and PowerPoint
Thank you so much! this was very helpful
Thank you for watching Lilith! Hugely appreciated! 😊 If you need anything in the future just gimme a shout! 🙃
Thank you for watching! Hugely appreciated! :)
@ Dr. You are making wonderfull figures, but where you are putting all the figures, in the word or in the excel, I mean all figures you have put in a big white paper,
Hi. Can you help me to arrange my figurs
Hey Kasun, sure how can I help?
@Thanks for your reply. This is my first full paper. Need your support arrange figures. May I get your email ID please. nay communication method? Thank you so much
Hi Kasun, genuinely tight for time these days and wouldn't be able to slot you in! Apologies and best of luck with the figures and of course with the paper!
thanks. then how to save the figures with high resolution from PPT?
Hi my friend, save it in a TIFF format😎 sometimes of you make the image really large on the page like 1000% larger before saving as a TIFF, it becomes a very large image file containing high quality detail
@ thanks. could I ask what is the size of your PPT page? when I use the function "save as picture", the resolution is very low.
@@user-nz2sv1ql3f PowerPoint page is standard A4 dimensions, I would simply copy the entire figure as an A4, paste it on a separate PowerPoint page as an image, scale it up to 10 times approx the size then right click and save as Tiff. Usually the image is about 80-120 megabytes so pretty massive
can you do a video on how to edit graphs using llustrator?
Hi Samalka, unfortunately I've never used illustrator before!
sounds like Im watching BBC documentary
Amazing thank u so much
You're very welcome, thanks for the kind comment!
Thabk you
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!!!
Do you have a tutorial for how to create figure B? Thank you!
Hi SKD thanks for the comment! Do you mean the heatmap figure B? It's really simple, you can create it in Excel 😉👌 just look up how to create a heatmap on Excel and bingo! Make sure you have the data that needs to be represented in heatmap form 👍
@ thank you! I’ll give it a try tonight! Very helpful info.
It worked! Thank you. One last question, did you then remove the values and adjust the view after creating it? TY!
Exactly! Remove the values and you have a pretty heatmap 👍👌😉 copy and past into word and voilà
@ Great! Thanks for your help with this; my heatmap is now one of my graphs for my defense in February!
0:23 sarcasm?
Hahaha never! :D XD
Yeah... I don't get how your word isn't transforming your tables and pictures into abstract art. Getting my word to be as co-operative as yours seems to be like trying to tell a blind person how to paint Mona Lisa.
Hahaha so true! I bollocked up a supplementary document in my publication because of word's temperament! Trick is to use PowerPoint and paste as a picture in word 💪🥳
@ Haha yes, I can relate. I remember when I did a bachelors degree and couldn't fit the name of my co-author on the front page pre-picked word format. Sent the document to It-technicians, company IT-support, programmers, researchers, friends and family and I sat with that one task for 8 hours before hand-in. Couldn't be done. So I had to add the name in the very end of the paper, and I still feel terrible for robbing her of my front page to this day. Word is just....terrible.(Obviously, she handed in her own report).
Thanks, powerpoint was actually a much better idea than what I usually do. I will note that.
Thumbs up for the video
Need help regarding hierarchical maps and PCA if u can help kindly coordinate through email
Hi Saba, thanks for the kind comment and question on PCA - I don't share my private email on UA-cam unfortunately
