I've watched a lot of Oliver Twixt's interviews too and I think the consensus on Furonda was that she is so funny, smart and fun. Tyra doesn't seem to like when anyone shines bright.

The model who drank the coffee was really sweet, she considered the different culture when her top fell down not just her own embarrassment. The show didn't care about both.
That’s a good point-ANTM took these girls to all these far-off locations and would only occasionally talk with them about the importance of diplomacy, respecting other cultures when overseas, etc. We see a couple of the girls in this cycle actually trying to honor that here, but the producers did not prioritize that at all.
And you know Jay would have been like "You should have had some coffee!" if she had mentioned being tired after sitting in that heat for 10 hours waiting for her turn!
Yeah, I appreciated that as well. It makes sense she’d be embarrassed for herself but you gotta love thinking about and doing your best to respect the culture whose land you’re visiting

Aerialist here. I think its pretty dangerous to put models with no aerial skills in a harness and just flat out asked to pose. They could very well have injured themselves! Posing at an awkward, upside down angle while attached attached a harness requires a lot of core strength, without prior experience it is easy to throw your back out or even cause a spinal injury. I personally would do it and be fine, I've got modelling and a experience - but these girls have no idea about aerial and I think they did an absolutly fantastic job, especially with all this taken into consideration. So, they did an amazing job but should not have been put in this position, atleast have an experienced aerialist on set to give tips and to make sure they aren't going to injure themselves. :// xxx

Remember the ice princess shoot? They made it look like a backdrop, but to create drama, they needed real ice blocks & snow with the girls in bikinis.

And the boat people screaming back just as shocked not because they caught a mermaid but because her shiny tan skin is just so flawless lol Now that lol if I seen in a ad would catch my attention.

Facts
Danielle is an icon. What upsets me is that she pushed through so much discomfort in this season with their ridiculous demands and they used her strength against future contestants. “Oh you were too sick to do the shoot? Well in Cycle 6 Danielle was sick and she did it, you probably just didn’t want it enough!”

Yeah! She hands down dealt with that stuff very very well. I think even though she was put through bs she handled it with grace and professionalism!
The upside down concept looked awful tbh, and was designed to be uncomfortable for the girls. It couldve been used in many ways, sitting ir laying in it etc. The boat idea is superb, i can already imagine how gorgeous it could be!
That would be cool if they were sitting and balancing on the side of the boat moving their tails up and down.
Maybe a shot of them pulling themselves onto the boat.
Literally it's like they make them as uncomfortable as possible for TV moe than anything

@@THEMODELGENE same! This shoot didn't let them experience and be creative with their poses. There's only a few you can do while suspended upside down and with only your hands free. I've had a shoot where I had to lean back a lot and let me tell you, my neck has never looked more muscular and strained than then xD Kudos to them for looking elegant in the final shots
I think a net swing would have been fun kinda like a hammock or something of that nature. And honestly with how the photos looked they could have done this all indoors and photoshopped them into the background.
No one should be in pain in order to do their job. It's why we have safety rights. ANTM makes it seem like once you are a model you have no legal rights to a safe working environment both physical and psychological like verbal abuse. I hate to think how this influenced a generation in real life.
I think back to how I grew up watching this show, and how much it made me wanna be a model when I was young. I eventually got into it and discovered how nasty and superficial it was… who knows what other complexes and insecurities it gave me in those formative years.
If a model gets hurt on a shoot, the photographer is responsible, or the crew.
The narrative this show created about the modeling industry makes you not want to enter it.
It's so weird to see them tell Furonda that she's overdressed when they usually harp on the girls for not dressing "modely" enough or not putting their hair into pony tails to achieve a "high-fashion" look. 😂
I loved Furonda’s quirky beautiful style, she stood out without looking overdone. For the longest time if a girl showed up in something other than a t-shirt and jeans they said she didn’t look like a model.
That is such an interesting aspect of the show. The production of course told the models they had to bring a certain amount of outfits for the show, when realistically, tight jeans, black and nude pumps, and a tight fitting tank top would be appropriate for a gosee.

My brother does technical lighting for theatres, concerts, movies, etc and so he’s gone through OSHA training on being in a harness for when they have to change out the lights super up high. And he said that the biggest takeaway they drilled into them was if you fall off the catwalk and are dangling from the harness you need someone to get you down ASAP bc it’s cutting off the circulation from your femoral arteries and you’ll lose both your legs if you manage to survive it so this is super hella risky to have them (seemingly) only in a waist harness to support them entirely for who knows how long to shoot this
Do you think they would’ve been allowed to do this photoshoot in the US? Or would some health and safety advisors stop them?
@@LauraConnolly if it’s how it looks from the episode it’s definitely not OSHA compliant. I don’t know if they can get away with not following the rules in a different country if it’s an American show just shooting partly in a different country but that is a really good question and I’d be curious to know more!

Those aren't the same types of harnesses HOWEVER I do think this was dangerous and unnecessarily painful for the shoot.
When you don’t over critic and stay silent, you notice how monstrous the judges display superiority and even humiliate them overboard. I’m super disappointed in Nigel this episode. Honestly, the show could be so much better if they didn’t attack the girls like that. The challenge before judging also was a dreck.

I agree with you. Unfortunately the show was successful because of that, because it made good TV. Some shows have not aged well at all and imo this is one of the worst.

Imagine being a local and just going about your business selling your product and then a bunch of American show up to roll around in dead fish and take some fancy photos lol.
Me: “What a stunning photo!”
Jessica: “The background is gray, muted and no color.”
Me: “Agree, so gray and boring. I hate this photo.”
The way they dulled the background makes the shoot look like it was done in front of a green screen. 😭 why?!

I've always loved Jade. I know she was painted as the villain of the season, but I really do love her. She seems so funny and also I think she's so beautiful.

Super unpopular opinion: I never really liked Jade. She's a stunning woman and a great model, with oodles of confidence and funny at times, but she really was so rude and arrogant, and manipulative editing can only do so much. Everyone sits on their couch watching these clips of her and laughs while calling her a queen as she slams other people, but imagine being on the other end of her insults and attacks. It sure wouldn't be funny then. I've just never liked arrogant people, and while I admire her confidence, her ego is just a hard pass for me.

@@sluttymctits4496 that’s not an unpopular opinion; I remember people absolutely hating her when this cycle first aired. I think people are being more compassionate towards her now that time has passed and behind-the- scenes tea about the show has been spilled.

Actually it was a long time ago (I'm old ;____;) since I watched it and there's no way to stream it in my country so maybe I don't remember how rude she could be. But as far as I'm concerned I would give all these girls the benefit of the doubt. They were all very young and were taken advantage of a lot and this show was never about finding the next supermodel. It was about what made good enough drama for TV without regarding the mental health of the contestants. I hope they're all doing great today, because this show was awful on so many levels.
I feel like this is the most directing Jay has ever done 🤔 I also wonder if they had the food/drink discussion before the shoot. Or if they would’ve been more forgiving if she said she drank a lot of water instead of coffee (since it was hot outside).
Oh my god the editing job they did for furonda is so clearly trying to show her in a bad light. The sound effects, the cuts to Mr. Jay, the confession from Sarah that doesn’t actually match the way furonda is acting (she’s not a diva she’s literally being sweet and fun going into it and then wants to get her shoot done to get out of the heat, but Danielle talking about fish juice is perfectly fine?)
It’s so clearly a narrative they’re trying to push onto her and I hate it. 🙃

I hated this one, I thought the photoshoot was so unrelated to the product. Also imagine if any of these girls had something like endometriosis or anything that would make this horribly painful.
It would have made more sense for them to be mermaids basking in the sun… because, you know, tanning lotion? But I guess ANTM thought that wouldn’t be as “challenging”

I remember this photoshoot! The concept of them being mermaid is fine, but hanging upside-down gives them very limited mobility.

If you want to recreate this shoot without using a crane, you could use an aerialist as a model (for example someone who knows how to perform on aerial silks) and you could, for example, hang the aerial silks on a branch above a water body
Yeah cuz aerialists are easier to find than cranes....
@@grantmegan91 I can assure you there are lots of aerialists eager to have they pictures taken. It is a growing sport and you don't need to be pro-performer level to be able to pull out some easy (for you) but really photogenic tricks
also there is literally an aparatus called aerial net and would be perfect for this kind of shoot!
@@Mielikkiii aerialist here! Also a signed model.... totally agree with you! I did my own comment explaining the dangers of putting inexperienced models in an aerialists position! Thing that's difficult with aerialists can be pay. Some new models will take photoshoots as tfp whereas aerialists can be more expensive, especially if they are bringing their own rigger.... but that said, there's still plenty out there that I'm sure would just love to be involved. I'm one of those tbh xD
@@little_flitter I would be willing to pay for such photos! (poledancer here, far from professional, but skilled enough to have some cool aerial photoshoots - I paid for them all and would do it again). But I agree that the equipment could be an issue, although not an unsolveable one :)
I'm with you on how they ruined that organically beautiful background. The way they retouched the photo made it look like it was fake. Totally took away from the the power that the photos could have had if it was believable that they had actually been hanging there on site (which they were). If they wanted it to look fake, they could have just done this in a studio. Saved a lot of money.

They went to Thailand to set up this shoot at an actual market, hanging them above water and boats. Then made the photos look photoshopped lol.
“Every girl gets a character on the show.” Absolutely, girl. This is why I appreciate your videos over so many others. You know how to suss out the problems with production, rather than just reacting to what they wanted us to think.
Love the fact that you called Tyra out after the judges were calling out Jade for having too many accessories. Tyra is trying to do early 20th century hair and has lots of accessories herself but because she's the host and judge, my mind was like "Yes. Tyra's accessories look good and fashionable because she is Tyra" and yikes the brain washing this show put us through.
Loved Joanie for how much she respected the Thai culture: she was trying to learn Thai on the plane ride and bought a translation book to help her. But most of all that she knew showing a tube top was considered overexposure to the Thai people surrounding them & she didn’t judge it, she just didn’t want to offend anybody. Love that
I think they could have changed the styling to something more fitting for this environment and that would have been cool.
Nnenna says that she pictures mermaids with long nice hair but whenever I think of this photoshoot, I always think of her photo. She looked so graceful and gorgeous.

I'm not an expert on harnesses, but I have been in a harness several times (for zip lining) and the ones I have been in are designed to keep you upright and secure. Them flipping over like that is probably causing so much pain because they are literally fighting against the harness to get in those positions.

I loved the idea of a mermaid photoshoot but wouldn't it make more sense to have a beach shoot with them sunbathing on a large rock or something similar?
Right ? The whole concept does not make sense. Why would anyone be pretty, tanned, serene and ethereal when caught in a fish net hanging upside down?? Even the fishes are dead.

I have a theory. I think the person editing the photos put more effort into there favourite models pictures and the ones there thinking of eliminations they subtly make there photos darker, bland and forgettable. Then try make it out to be the models fault when it isn't x

I think this mermaid hidden in the waters of the floating market in Thailand is a cool idea. But I think it would’ve looked so much better with them emerging from it skulking in the water as opposed to upside down. But idk if you’re allowed to go in that water.

Beautiful models, ugly photography. I swear that this show searched for the most painful, most frightening, most dangerous, most risky ( and on and on) to put these women in. Then when the models follow through with the photos they belittle and laugh and grouch about their photos. 😡

I would love to see if you could take some shots from different episodes where you were underwhelmed by the editing and see if you could edit on top of them to try to “fix” them and bring them closer to their full potential. I would love to see these mermaid pictures with a brighter and more saturated background now 😍
Jess, you know you reacted to all photoshoots where Furonda was in the bottom two. LOL The bald shoot, the elephant shoot, now this.
From a biomechanics perspective, this is absolutely not a safe way to have your body suspended for any amount of time. I can only imagine the amount of nerves those cords are compressing
They fish up a mermaid and want pretty and serene. Furious and scared would be way more realistic.

I have a lot of thoughts on this episode - but, let's do a crowdfunding campaign to get Jessica to have her own "next top model" where she can take those of us who wished they were a model and recreate these photoshoots but WAY COOLER with all of Jessica's expertise, feedback, etc. To show what it could have been. I'd watch it. I'd contribute funds, let's get this going Jessica!

victoria from cycle 9 and leslie from cycle 3 both said they encountered "production notes" with the stereotypes that each model would have for the season, so i think your theory is right

I love your videos, it’s so fun to revisit this show that I thought was insane back when it was on, but seen through the eyes of someone voicing that now! Love that you always call out the BS. I do think the judging panel has a point about how the models dress for judging. IIRC the judging is like a go-see, and the idea is that you want to be stylish but simple. I think that’s because top agents, designers, photogs, have to see so many models, that they need to be able to picture the model in the context of the shoot concept, or the clothes, very quickly, to see as many options as possible during casting. And it’s hard to do that if your look is too busy.
I was thinking if the "mermaids" were modeling on the boats better than being trapped in a net. Then you mentioned it.🤣

I’ve been waiting for you to review this one! It doesn’t seem as dangerous as some of the other shoots but I remember each girl complaining about pain in this episode and as a teen watching this episode I think it made me feel like models were supposed to power through any and all pain to get the shot. This episode always sticks up in my mind as one of the most elaborate and pretty shoots that they did on the show, but I don’t remember the photos coming out as bland nor that they used the same tail!
I feel like models shouldn’t have to endure the pain of a shoot, because they’re people too and they deserve to let their feelings be known! Definitely better to speak up, otherwise it could damage you ):

I do aerial arts and hanging like that for a long time would be tough! If you wanted to recreate this photo shoot you should look for an aerialist! I would totally do it 😉
I’m so happy I found your channel because I love seeing an actual ethical photographer reacting to these.
I’m not saying this to sound like a suck up, but not even kidding I thought you were a model when I first watched one of your ANTM videos (I think you had said “from a professional perspective” and I assumed you are a model since you’re so beautiful) but it’s even better coming from a photographer who KNOWS you’d get way better shots without the idiocy they do to make these purposefully awful for the models.

Im an aerialist and this reminds me of the concept of an aerial hammock
And when you first start it is not comfortable. It squeezes and pulls on your skin (it takes a while for your body to get used to the pain…like a couple of months). It’s also very easy to get dizzy and a head rush when you are upside down and completely new to this sensation. Not to mention the amount of core to hold poses since you are working against gravity. This was setting them up to just not have a good time, and make it as complicated for them as possible
Poler here: YES! And also just the fact that when you're upside down your sense of direction gets so twisted. In our studio we're constantly going "move your arms up" and then going "no, the other up, the ceiling-up not the head-up" and the like, I'm impressed by how well they managed to take direction actually

Lol I was going to mention this as well but I didn’t think most people would be able to understand how disoriented you become upside down 😂 I was also very impressed how well they took direction. When I first started I had to wear an ankle bracelet on my right ankle so I knew which was my right side upside down lol
I feel like you could recreate this concept but in a slightly different way with aerial silks! It would give the floating graceful vibe but not as dangerous or painful to the model

I hate that this show always told girls to work it or work through it.
However when Caridee “work through it” when they did the shoot in the pool, Tyra told her, that she should “listen” to her body! It’s confusing
Tyra Banks with a Dr. Quinn's look, a flower on her head and lots of make up telling Furonda that she is over the top by wearing that dress is like me trying to teach maths to Einstein when I can barely count to ten. XOXO
I think it would be cool if you did a video re-editing some of the photos from antm! there have def been a few where the photos could've been gorgeous if they didn't totally botch the editing
The judges always gave me anxiety, when I was a kid watching this years ago, Nena is a Queen, she ran over to the girls and hugged them, didn’t even hug Tyra yessss😂😂🤣😂🤣

OMG you should react to Asia's next top model. There are a couple of episodes, I think in season 4, were they bring in an executive for Subaru and he's really mean to one of the girls. It was really shocking when I watched it
I hate when they judge their outfits! Its so irrelevant. I think some of these judges are actually jealous of these girls and that's why they're so harsh.
