Xanadu was based in the unfinished poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, about a man who seeks immortality, and then discovers that it's not what he expected; 1,000 years later, everyone he's known has long since died, and he's imprisoned in a cave of eternal darkness, going mad as he waits for the world to end and set him free. Another Rush essential IMO is Ghost Rider, which was based on what happened when Neil's wife and daughter died tragically within 6 months of each other, and he took a break from the band and travelled all around North America on his motorcycle as he worked to process his grief; he was also a best-selling authour, who wrote a book of the same title chroncicling his journey. Rest in peace Professor. 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐
"They look like rock stars there." I agree. But they also looked like they could be your next-door neighbors. That is what was so amazing about Rush. They looked and acted like they could be your friends. Most of all, they always looked like they were having fun, without drugs (well some... early in their careers) but mostly without drugs, or controversy, or criminal behavior. Just three friends having fun. "Organized chaos. ...and I mean that in a good way." Exactly. Most of their music in the early days was arranged like classical music. In movements.
Welcome to my world I'm 64 years old the first time I seen him was in 1974 this is a band that no matter what in over 40 years of planning has never let me down back in the true sense is absolute perfection
The best Prog. Rock band ever. The transitions are always flawless and flows so perfectly. Have you done Neil Peart drum solo live from Frankfurt yet?! A must do. And Spirit of Radio studio version.
There will never be a band like this one. Geddy plays the synth with his foot, while playing the bass and singing as well. If he had another arm, he would probably ask Neil for a drum stick to hit something too. What a monster. I cant say enough about these monster musicians, but to assure you that the planets were aligned when they met. By the way, Geddy`s double neck is conformed by a bass guitar and a 12 string guitar which he uses at the end of the song for the grand finale. This band is addictive. I have not been able to stop listening to their music for 45 years. I am 61 yo and I crank it up every time I have a chance. Now, to my like, their best song is Cygnus X-1, book 2. The lyrics are Neil`s best, and, believe me, he has written the best lyrics I have ever heard, and the music behind it, just awesome. The end of such master piece song is a lesson for humanity. They shaped my life. I have a friend who told me once that Tool is a better band......but he refuses to listen to Rush, I guess it is because he is afraid he`ll change his mind immediately. There is no comparison. They are light years apart.
Rush and Tool shouldn’t be a competition. Both are incredible. I hear a lot of influence from Rush to Tool. Prog metal at its finest. Danny Carey has named Neil as a direct influence.
Part of the reason they didn't get their flowers was high school kids couldn't dance to them at dances . Only the fans could keep up with what they were laying down . Saw them in Edmonton in 85 , as a young man for Power Windows . Made my kid skip school with my credit card for a chance to get front row center stage for Snakes and Arrows . He pulled it off , , last time I was that close to Geddy I had to rush the stage and not get caught . Second album i bought was A Farewell To Kings . Good seeing somebody appreciating what i grew up with . Keep on keeping on brother
A brilliant performance of a masterpiece! This is progressive rock and progressive rock takes some elements from classical music in having different movements and tempo changes. Red Barchetta from the same concert is another suggestion along with Secret Touch from the Snakes and Arrows tour Great reaction! Cheers
Dude, love you. Rush is the music for THINKING people, and you are one of us. I'm gonna hit the sub. tab now. RUSH ON EH!!! #RushFamily ❤❤❤ Three hearts, one for each of them.
Great analysis use usual. I love all types of music, and have worked for many years at music festivals here in the UK as a stage manager/compere. There is some music I always come back to. I could just put it on, but I enjoy seeing other people's reaction to it. Your reactions are very well thought out and expressed. I like that. Any way ckeck out 'The Garden' live. the last song on their last album, again lyrics by Neil. Also look up the story of Neil's life and the song will resonate a little more. I think yo'u'll understand. Thank you again and take care. A.
Actually Geddy's Guitar is a 4 string bass and 6 string guitar, but I have never seen a double neck bass before. I heard Alex sold a bunch of his guitars but I can't imagine he sold this amazing double neck SG.
For Rush live performances, I highly suggest checking for the "Stick Hits" remastered videos. The quality of audio and video is superb, and really brings the performance to a higher level.
When Geddy starts singing at the start he is singing, playing Bass, and playing bass synthesized pedals all at one time that's 2 different instruments and vocals all at once.
@@dragonage2112 that is correct but that's not when I'm talking about , he uses the peddles more than once but if you take a look at 9:25 you can clearly see him move in to play the peddles you can hear the sound it makes as he steps on it . I have seen them live 19 times so I can tell you with 1000% certainty that they both use the peddle quite often through out a Rush Show . here is another video of them playing this song and you can see him playing them at around the 2:06 mark ua-cam.com/video/SEuOoMprDqg/v-deo.html
😳 Wait did you do Cygnus Book 1: The Voyage first? 😲 Did I miss that reaction or is that on Patreon also! 😒 Without Book 1, it's like 🤔 walking in on a Movie half way thru. The Voyage covers the 🚀 Rocinate trip thru the 🕳️ Blackhole: Cygnus. Book 2: Hemisheres tells you what happened when the ship exited 🕳️ Cygus on the otherside. 🤗 Hope that helps! 😂 Dude didn't just wake up on the other side of a blackhole. 😁 Ijs .... 🥰🐰
Cygnus Book II: Hemispheres is on my Patreon. I started with that because that was recommended the most! I’ll go back and check it out! Thanks for informing me
LOVE the reaction!! :) Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR?????!!!!!!!!! :) ♥ “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
Actually, Geddy is not playing a double neck bass. The lower neck is a guitar (count the strings and tuning pegs). Towards the end of Xanadu, Geddy plays a background guitar part under Alex's main part. Layers upon layers upin layers. Typical Rush overachievement.

Yeah the camaraderie is definitely there!

Quite possibly my favorite live performance ever!!

Danny Carey has named Neil as a direct influence.
Not a 12 string on the double neck bass, it's a 6 string.
Don't forget that both Geddy and Alex are also playing organ-like foot pedals as well.
❤ greatest band of all time period
😂 The Professor at work is definitely 🤯 something to behold yo! 🥰🐰
Exit Stage Left was my first concert.
Check out Neil Pearts drum solo CottonTail

The talent and skill of all three guys...is just unique and amazing. Collectively...they are unparalleled.

RUSH ON EH!!! #RushFamily ❤❤❤
Three hearts, one for each of them.
Thank you David!
😂these dudes were tripping when they came up with this stuff.🤯😵💫🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎹
😱 🥸😎😵
According to one interview from Alex...at this period of their lives, they did a lot of...hash. 😁

Geddy’s double neck for this was a bass on the top and a 12 string guitar on the bottom…. He plays the 12 string towards the very end
Actually Geddy's Guitar is a 4 string bass and 6 string guitar, but I have never seen a double neck bass before. I heard Alex sold a bunch of his guitars but I can't imagine he sold this amazing double neck SG.
Gordie Johnson had that SG while he was in Big Sugar.
It's a four string bass and twelve string guitar, the models called a Rickenbacker 4080/12.
For Rush live performances, I highly suggest checking for the "Stick Hits" remastered videos. The quality of audio and video is superb, and really brings the performance to a higher level.
Alex 12/6 string, Geddy 4/12 string. Neil, a gazillion drums. 😅🍁🔥🇨🇦
And every other thing you can hit that makes a sound. 😁
You gotta checkout the other Canadian Power Trio, Triumph, a good start would be "Fight the Good Fight" or "Magic Power"!
You're not far off with the mad scientist comment. Neil Pearts nickname was "The Professor " ❤
Great video. Geddy has a bass top. 6 string bottom. He plays the 6 string at the end.
Alex has a 6 and 12 string.
Geddy's got a bass on top and a 12 string on the bottom neck.
How three guys can sound like thirty. 😊
Right!!!
It’s funny that you refer to Neil as a mad scientist, because his most famous nickname is the professor.😂
😄 oh, you just trying to get me over to patron with that little Cygnus tidbit ... 😒 You may just see me over there 😁🥰🐰
🤗 I ♥️ Xanadu Reactions! The same way I ♥️ NYC! 🥰🐰
I haven’t been to NYC yet 😬 only Rochester
Geddy's "doubleneck bass" Is actually bass and 12 string guitar...
When Geddy starts singing at the start he is singing, playing Bass, and playing bass synthesized pedals all at one time that's 2 different instruments and vocals all at once.
pay close attention to Alex and you will notice he is playing taurus pedals also
@@raymondjones6686 where in the song?
@@raymondjones6686 If you are talking about the intro by Alex afraid not that is a volume pedal he's using lol

At 16:35 watch Alex switch guitars. So fast you didn't see it. I guess
