- A quick discussion of your music industry journey, how to get to where you want to be, and what that means to you if it works...or doesn't.
I referenced another youtube video and I think its worth a view even if you aren't a graphic designer.

yes, its my flamingo shirt
😂
Best sartorial choice for the delivery of a non-surprise, abrupt surprise ending. koan-like. that's not a lot of movies watched. Jacob's Ladder(1990) might have some similarities with Sliding Doors, but with a Meister Eckhart quote .
The internet’s number one Hip Hop podcast!!!
this really can't be overstated.
I don't have to ask myself this question. I already know first hand. I tried and wasn't able to make a living out of it, but I've never been able to stop, and I'm only getting decent now after 25 plus years.
I expect a good percentage of us watching these are in this boat, happy to still have the fire burning in our belly.
100% true about one thing being able to change the course of your career.
I never planned on becoming an audio engineer. I graduated for something else (English teacher) but wasn’t feeling it and wanted to try mastering for the heck of it as I had been making music and my own masters for 20 years. Things went ok yet a bit slow for 2-3 years.
Then, a few years after I started (ca. 8 years ago), a then hobbyist / bedroom producer got in touch asking if I could mix/master his songs. I said of course. He’s now huge in house music / EDM and thru working with him I’ve earned a really good reputation and I have a full-time job that I love. Work comes in daily.
Lesson? Gotta respect every client.
Yes! DJ'ing and producing for 30 years now. Succes is not ever lasting. I think it comes in waves. To be creative is an internal force🙂🎶
Dude. I just started producing 3 weeks ago, at 35, been writing, mixing and rapping since early twenties though. You give me a lot of hope. You're being a little antsy now that your channel suddenly got an influx is intoxicating too. Thanks for being here. Also the insights and pro tips are invaluable. ❤🎉
antsy? I did have a lot of caffeine.
Off course its all about the journey not the destinantion , salute.
on and "off" the course...ya got a nice typo
Invaluable advice. I hope I can carve out a path in this industry to be able to work with people like Tony. These kind of people can catapult your music career to new heights.
What a great point on copying making one late to the scene!
You can't rush greatness!
To be totally honest, if I knew ahead of time that I was going to reach some lofty goal (in my case mix engineering-related), then at some point I think I would start letting off the gas a bit, losing motivation here and there, because it would most likely start to feel like it was my "destiny", and then maybe start to feel like it was my right; as if I now should reach it no matter what I did.
On the other side, if I knew I would *not reach that lofty goal, then I'd probably still stick with it for the journey's sake; it is a fun hobby on its own
Plus 5 is just a number. You may pop off in 6 years. We gotta keep pushing & enjoy the ride!
level matching!
Pedal to the metal. X-ing off the days. All in.
Just do your thang professor mix
Kinda wild that you posted this today. Recently I've been questioning if my potential is actually what I imagine, amongst other things like mortality and everything. Glad that my instinctual answer to your final question was yes, I would keep going. Really preciate all this philosophical/motivational content.
keep going!
Am sitting here today.....
Looking forward to it.
God Bless
That's an interesting question and if I knew for sure I would not achieve any high status or fame at the end of my 5, 10, or 20 year goal. I would still do it because I look at "Life is a Journey, Not a Destination". A person on their journey doing what they love every day and being happy doing it is a success in itself because your happiness and fulfillment is in the present. You might not have made that "GOAL" but you sure did love every second of the journey.
just watched that video you mentioned right before this!
good story there.
It's crazy how we're getting so close to it lmao. Anyway, it reminds me of how I spent most of my 20s skateboarding, doing graffiti, and smoking weed (33 now) because I thought a lot of underground techno industry people in our city were boring or just really uncultured in reality.
Mr mpc hip hop hooray im happy today
I pretty much know its not going to work out but im still trying to Beat the algorithm of The matrix.
thought of another reason to replicate an old classic. discover what music theory the song is using. when ppl start with music theory it can seem like an endless wheat field. dunno where to begin. finding similar musical devices in your favorite classics helps tremendously
this goes for making beats for producers too. listen to beats and vibes you enjoy and want to capture to make your own someday. be consistent by yourself remaking those beats and vibes paying attention to sounds placements scales for that genre etc. eventually u will be able to remake perfectly the style of beats u want, then from there the floor is yours to add the caveats.
i do this. meaning i recreate tracks i like to try to figure out how it was made. its always interesting. not because i want to sound exactly like X, Y, or Z but because i want to identify the playing field. how many sounds, effects, compressors, saturators, on an on, do i need to "compete", to "sound official" for whatever genre. i think its valid.
hunter thompson used to type out long sections of famous works from other authors to "feel the rhythm" of the language
HT was nuts, but he was onto it at times.
@@TonyBlackNYC there's nothing wrong with having a flawed guru. all gurus are flawed, imperfect in one way or another. "gold is where you find it"
being original in 2024 gets no play , thats ok with me :)
Tony, this may be your best video yet (!) because it was not what I was expecting. It was somewhat philosophical in nature. Just tell me that five years from now we won't still be smoking cigars at the Inn just as we do today!
we'll be smoking better cigars
Yes.
Yes
Wild to think we live in the Space Age future.
I see your name mentioned mr TPE
not watched it yet, title sounds ominous . lol
30 movies in your life. That's crazy!
Are you a book guy?
If you knew in 2029 you would be a big deal…..then just knowing that would make it not happen.
I used to have to deal with all sorts of young big headed ego ghetto punk rappers in my studio and one thing they all had in common was to commandeer beat production because they always referenced to a song they like and told me to make it more like that. This always stressed me out to find a happy medium when what they are instructing more than requesting for you to basically make an entirely new track to make them happy. Aggressive micromanging the producer gets nothing done at the end of the day when a rapper is incapable of adapting to their environment and finding their own identity as a rap artist when their dialogue gravitates around references pertaining to other rap artist work and you have to sit there biting your lip from saying "be creative and go with the flow"
real talk
I've come this far without it working out so why stop now
If you had a million dollars, what compressor would you use for a rap kick ?
I'd use the ssl channel...and pocket the rest $$$$$
@@TonyBlackNYC lol. If you are free to zoom, I would love to aks you some more questions. I think you will love my studio
Hey Tony you’re getting a little smoke from a guy called “THE PRETEND ELITE.”
The video is “ Musician, problems-Rick Beato and Tony from NYC”.
I don’t think he understands your position.
all good!
Q- How to make a track sound good?
A- compression.
that's clickbait ...
You aren't a movie guy, are you a Seinfeld guy?
