The face tracking is fine. Those of us here to learn only need the audio anyway. Also, don't bother acknowledging the trolls. Most of the time it just encourages them rather than fends them off and it takes time away from those that appreciate the content as is.
Thanks for doing what you do!

Wow, some great gems in this video: My take-homes:
    1. Focus on the sound. Visuals may be helpful but may also distract your focus away from the sound.
    2. Commit to finishing a project by a deadline.
    3. Vet your information. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet.

Tony, I have an MPC 5000 and I know they get a lot of bad talk but I have a lot invested into it with an upgraded memory and several sound kits for it…..it takes me 10 minutes at start up just to load all my sounds up not because it’s slow but because that’s how many I have….anyways, I feel like I make my music the way you’ve been talking about how it was done in the 90’s…..of course I’ve been recording at home since the 90’s….but I record everything into my DAW which is an Apollo, separately (but at the same time) through plug ins as you can do with the Apollo. Then I have full control of every single track in my beat, hi-hat is separate, kick, snare, strings, synth, any sound is separate and a lot of the processing is done going through the Apollo. I also will do further processing with plug-ins if needed. Maybe some time you can hear some of my work ….i have many samples of even only 1 minute long if you’d ever like to hear how close i think i get to an early 2000’s sound. IMO.

Ha! I remember creeping at the doors, waiting to hear if it was cool to go in or not. Sooo many rules back then! What a time! And speaking of time, you never knew what time it was; you were in that room as long as the one in charge needed to be. Spent plenty of nights at the studio having had a session run all night and being the one scheduled to be back in the morning to open up.

There is a Busta Rhymes video on YT. Years ago. Where he describes the budgets artists had 'back in the day' compared to now.
He also asserts that what ruined hip hop (maybe not his precise words) was when everyone started sitting looking at the audio waveforms on the computer screen. Some people MIDI sequence and record audio DAW less. Hardware set up.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences ! It is fascinating to hear what it was like at the time. Can you speak a bit on how / when things started transitioning to Digital? You mentioned on your other video about buying a tribe called quest album on vinyl but I fear that most modern releases of classic hip hop on vinyl are cut from digital files regardless if they were originally mixed and mastered to tape.

love this content and your insight. thank you. Will you speak on the difference you hear in sonic quality when comparing software DAWs to hardware pieces such as MPC/SP1200??? and the difference you hear between plug in style eq/limiters/compressors etc etc to actual hardware or even 500 series gear? thank you

this is making me want to get a 2000 again. I wore one out in the 90s. one point i was making it do accent fills by taking a full sequence, duplicating it, and then making sequences with time signatures going like 3/16, 3/16, 2/16, and repeating that. Made for some interesting ways to do hits. But back then, I had no idea how to mix bass. I didn't get it. Now I do stuff in logic but the feel in logic requires such hair pulling to get it groovy. Terrible. Makes me just want to stick with playing drums or get a loop pedal so I can just repeat the feel that I can get with my hands. I keep thinking I'm gonna crack the Logic code but it always ends up in the graveyard. Blegh. Please keep this content coming!

Another good post thank you Tony! About 90´s hiphop mixing in studios with boards: What were the most typical eq´s used for drum samples? SSL (The console in the studio) or rackmount stuff? Foe example mixing and. tracking with Nashiem Myrick, Easy Mo Bee ( SP 1200 Dudes) and the MPC guys you worked with.

I've worked as an assistant for a mainstream producer for a year, and is basically what you said, we have to be there, when you leave the studio and the music is going on, you have to take care when coming back, to not take the focus out of everybody

@@TonyBlackNYC so many questions 😅 thanks for the reply. Probably not a big demand for this topic, but if you ever get a chance to cover the kinds of gear and tracking techniques they would've been using (vocal chains, console, stuff like that), I would love to know more. Not trying to copy it per se, but I have grown up loving that sound so much and couldn't quite put my finger on why. :)

that's pretentious ny stuff , my dad was a session player and tour manage for Ohio players, and session player for countless ohio funk bands (lakeside, slave, parliament etc) they would have a movies on mute playing sometimes. ( NOT ALL THE TIME ) so you are right , more focus and attention was placed on the actual product. but they would indulge in visual mediums from time to time

There was another question about the gml that I had … I seen a lot of them on the internet racks in them ssl studios … were they used frequently or barely at all? And was it for the buss? Or was it for individual tracks or both ? I just don’t see any engineer’s that ever talked about it … I see how you kinda answer questions so depending how you answer this one I guess if it’s light I won’t ask to much more lol

About that 'telephone thing'. Sharing knowledge with referencing where/who you got it from is paramount, yet one can say goodbye to all royalties when you dare doing so during or after the creative process. It really is a blurred line, pun intended.
