If my memory is correct he used a database. A large database at that, I expect healthy user bias is huge. Those who minimize sugars, who eat whole foods and exercise. Omega 6 is essential, the source of it is important. Oxidation would need to be isolated in regard Omega 3 & 6 .

@@Cacheola Absolutely. Not covered. And no links provided to studies referenced.
Also Dr Harris claims Omega-6 oils are 'essential', meaning I guess that without them you'd be unhealthy or dead. But he refers to the carnivorous diets of indigenous peoples (presumably the Inuit) and the complete absence of T2D, cancer, heart disease & dementia when they were living on their ancestral (natural) diet. There are NO carbs in the Canadian North: none. What would have been the source of Omega-6 oils in their diet?
SO many questions this interview raises.
      VERY POORLY DONE VID.

Degradation and oxidation is definitely a huge problem. I think that the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is as important. The recommended ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is 2:1 to 4:1. The average Western diet is 1:15 or even 1:20.
I'd rather eliminate the omega-6 then spend a lot of money on supplements.

Something you aren’t adapted to eat can only cause problems. Also I have read comments by other people that when they consume them after not using them they notice a difference in their joint pain. Steve from Serious Keto has had this happen on several occasions. Now that I have my inflammation down and feel good most of the time, I think the oils cause the same issue for me. Seed oils are UNSTABLE in oxygen. As an example, let's take flax oil. Store-bought flax oil tastes bitter and funky even if it is organic. Flax oil goes rancid very quickly, when exposed to oxygen. By the time you buy it, God knows when the oil was extracted, and the bottle is not filled to the top, no, it has an inch of air in it. I use to get flax oil in small amounts that was from a local business. They extracted and bottled the oil on Mondays. I would use it up within a week (250 ml. bottle). It was nutty with no rancid, bitter taste. Store bought seed oils that are already rancid cause free radicals at the cell level. I will not use any seed oil, no matter what some "expert" says.

If you think extremely processed oils that are subjected to extreme heat and toxic chemicals like hexane, are good for you or are not harmful, then I say, good luck to you. Remember, most studies have an agenda and they are funded by someone that wants to see a specific outcome. We all know that statistics can be used to show almost any wanted outcome through some manipulation. Is it possible that these oils are fine if they aren't subject to over-processing? So, getting them naturally from the seeds and vegetables are okay but processing them to the point of oxidation makes them bad for us....I will continue to avoid seed oils and still feel I need to do more research on fish oil and omega 3's. I think there is still a lot to be discovered on this subject so I will proceed with caution.

At no point in my life have I had a different reaction to seed or soybean oil. Yet this is supposed to be good for you? Something is seriously wrong with this research. I have never had such issues from natural, unprocessed fats like tallow, lard, organic virgin coconut oil, and high polyphenol olive oil. The second these processed seed oils enter my system, they wreak havoc. If it makes me physically ill with a migraine, I have gotta wonder what it's doing to my liver and heart. Based on my own reading of studies, I long ago decided that the modern American diet was insufficient in Omega 3 and that we consume too much corn, soy, and seed oils that are heavily processed. I come at health from an evolutionary perspective. Our ancestors first ate fruits, berries, and seeds, then meats, much later came sedges and roots, then in the last 12,000 years grains and dairy. It's obvious that unprocessed seeds that humans were long made to consume are healthy, not so processed grains, soy, canola. Ancient populations processed and fermented or mixtalized the first two to make them edible, but processed anything nowadays is suspect for poisions and pollution and denuded of nutrition, which is the opposite of what ancient processing does, i.e. remove poisons and antinutrients.

It's not all about the reheating, opposite to what some comments point out. Some seed oils are only good for salads, like organic sesame oil, or also as medicine: a spoonful before eating, like organic flaxseed oil. Cooking I'd still prefer olive and coconut oils, butter, ghee and tallow. We have enough Omega 6, and it stays really long in the cells, too.

It seems to me that the whole concern over oxidation of processed seed oils when frying with them is entirely missing from this conversation. From what I’ve heard elsewhere (Mainly Dr Paul Mason and Dr Dr Ken Berry, both MDs) this is the primary issue with seed oils. There’s also the likelihood of these oils oxidising while stored, or even during the manufacture process where they’re extracted. It’s the oxidation products which are dangerous not the oils themselves.

Unsaturated fats used for frying, like french fries, will be far more susceptible to oxidation and even polymerization than saturated fats, so it may well be that aspect of the massive increase of linoleic acid in our diets is the case, as opposed to linoleic acid that has not been degraded. In addition, there are isomers of linoleic acid and it is not clear to me whether or not the analysis in studies have been able to differentiate the linoleic acid isomers actually being measured.

having a data based opinion warrants changing it relative to the checks and weights of the data. We should not personally identify with the idea that data promotes, as it leads to personal bias. I am glad to hear DrB. fight against preconceived relationships with data, regarless of the topic. As an aside, I often wonder why we use theoretical concepts of diet resulting from anthropological, archaeological studies as a source more reliable than a comparative analysis of adaptive traits amongst species: such as our length of intestine, jaw and teeth type and array and other adaptive traits that strongly suggest diet - more strongly, for me, than archeological and anthropological evidence at this time. Hunting and gathering occurred, but this seems to be post homo sapiens adaptive physiological evolution. In simple terms: it is no wonder the bacteria of a vulture is designed to support the consumption of carrion. It should be no wonder that the saliva of human is designed to convert starch to sugar (as one of many adaptive trait examples), strongly indicating what we evolved alongside with regard to diet - in that case the consumption of succulent tubers, without the need to chemically alter with heat/cooking to make it safe.

I’m both fascinated and disappointed by the comments. Everyone is obsessed with mechanisms, manufacturing techniques, and their own personal dogma. These are interesting for social media posts, but ultimately of little relevance to human health. What matters, in the end, is outcomes. As Dr Harris said, and as Dr Boz is realizing, the human outcome data for omega-6’s is pretty good-certainly not the bogeyman some claim.
She deserves serious credit for discussing her cognitive dissonance in real time. She’s working hard to keep an open mind, consciously choosing data over dogma. We should all be so willing to change when confronted with compelling evidence.

    • @kiwikim5163

    • @mfkleven
      @mfkleven 24 дні тому

@@kiwikim5163 It's not all correlational--plenty of RCTs show the same benefit.
But I think you're misunderstanding the limitations of epidemiologic studies. If linoleic acid is as toxic as people claim, we should be able to detect a signal in observational studies. If the toxic effect is strong, we should see it in every study, with unmistakable hazard ratios, and it should rise proportional to exposure. But we don't. In fact, we see the opposite.
Why? Because seed oils are not toxic.
You're certainly free to believe that anything purified (seed oils are not made, they're extracted, as you said) in a factory is unfit for human consumption, but that's a belief. It's dogma, not science. There's a good chance a lot of the pork, ground beef, dairy, and butter you enjoy also involved a factory.

Very interesting video - thanks! Is it possible that seed oils, themselves, aren't necessarily bad, but the way they're heated over and over (in fast food fryers, for example) alters their chemical characteristics and changes the way they affect the body? That seems to be the claim that some health influencers make when they point the finger at seed oils, but I've never seen anyone show any direct evidence that our bodies react differently to "fresh" vs "over-heated" seed oils. Has that been studied explicitly?
