I love one piece....I have been watching since I was in second grade...I'm 25 now...I remember seeing Zoro fight mihawk during the baratie arc....I always wanted to know what he could really do since I was in second grade.....I have friends who I've known since second grade who now have kids who are in second grade...and I still really know nothing about mihawk ...Oda and his great pacing lol

Mihawk has been one of the most underrated characters for years. I remember 5-10 years ago people would trash him constantly, saying Jozu and Vista are stronger than him lol.
Now it is the complete opposite people are screaming about how he is Yonko level when he was stalled by Jozu and Vista sure he could beat them overtime but a Yonko should be able to one shot a Yonko commander shown by Big mom two shorting queen without using haki and Kaido one shotting Luffy

I just look at it this way. Mihawk casually travels on a damn near plank of wood around the fucking world. Meaning he’s definitely encountered Sea Kings and has also traveled into Yonko territories at some point. He’s protected that small as little plank from huge ass talking fish and Yonko crews/commanders. This man is actually insane.
I believe that Mihawk is Yonko level, he is basically a Yonko without a Yonko crew or a large territory. The path to becoming the strongest swordsman simply requires an individual to improve their swordsmanship to a great level while the path to becoming the Pirate King requires more influence, support and teamwork. That is why becoming the Pirate King is harder than defeating Mihawk. Just my opinion based on what is currently known.
Titles means nothing in One Piece. WB was the strongest man but at Marineford Kaido or Big Mom or Shanks would have been definitely able to defeat WB. Someone from Government could have been a better swordman then Mihawk or whatever. And btw. Shanks fought against mihawk 12+ Years ago. Mihawk became yonkou 6 years ago with ONE arm. That shows Shanks incredible growth, so yeah he is definitely stronger then mihawk. I see mihawk on pair with Kizaru or Akainu and i see zoro defeating any admiral but not a yonkou

The fact that he's nicknamed Hawk Eye might truly have to do with crazy observation haki. Plus his armament is obviously on a league of it's own.

Luffy didn't use futuresight at Marineford. He used the intent-based form of Observation Haki we'd seen from people like Enel previously.
16:07 is probably the exact reason I personally believe MIhawk either has the best observation Haki in the series or at least top 5. The man is always calm,level headed and never flustered.
I think the best way to scale Mihawk at this moment is to look at him portrayal-wise. He looked almost as if he was bored at Marineford, despite it being filled with top tier people. The funny thing is that he had the same expression like the admirals. Cold and calm. So needless to say that he should be admiral level.

Im one of the guys who thinks he’s a yonko level, given he has fought on par woth shanks. I think the only thing that keeps him away from being a yonko is the fact that he doesnt have a crew or territories and he was a warlord.
He fought against shanks at least 12 years ago and shanks became yonkou 6 years ago WITH one arm. And it was said that they had legendary swordfights and not a death to death fight. Shanks is known for his haki and not swordfight skills. If you put everything together its obvious that shanks is stronger. Mihawk has no reason to get stronger.

Vista didn't move as the 4th Division Commander because some (maybe all?) Divisions in Whitebeard's crew had a certain specialty. The 5th Division was the Swordsman Division, thus Vista is the 5th Division Commander as the best Swordsman on the crew. It doesn't necessarily translate to him being the 4th-5th strongest guy on the crew.
I love how Mihawk clearly knows what true strength is, upon observing on Luffy. It's crazy why almost all of the villains in One Piece underestimates luffy which leads to their loss. I just wanna see Luffy being independent sometimes like he can be a raid boss or something.

I'm so glad you brought up the point of Mihawk not aiming for Jozu. So many people use that as a negative feat, but its so obvious if you spend any amount of time thinking about it, that diamond has its own way of being cut, just like steel.
I personally put Mihawk at Yonkou level. Not all Yonkous need to be considered equal. I also believe Whitebeard, even in old age and being sick, was the strongest Yonkou during Marineford. So I would put old, sick, Whitebeard above both Shanks and Mihawk.
As of Marineford: Whitebeard > Mihawk, Shanks, Kaidou, Big Mom > Admirals > everything else.
That's not any discredit to Admirals, by the way. They can hold their own 1v1 against a Yonkou (as seen in Marineford). But if it was a strictly "fair" fight 1v1, they would not win. They would lose hard difficulty.

I think "clash" is an understatement. Don't know when people started calling them "clashes" which implies "brief confrontation". Whitebeard himself called them "Legendary duels". If the strongest character at the time calls a fight a "legendary duel" then it is more than just a "clash".

I love how sawyer actually uses some sort of critical thinking in these vids. The big example in this vid is how he explains just why Mihawk's slashes didn't cut Jozu and Mr 1(initially). These type of things get forgotten and exposes some people. I really like that OP isn't just about powerlevels and that battles and strength go beyond just some arbitrary numbers. Example of this is how Kaku and Jabra were given these power levels, but Kaku has a harder devil fruit to use and also doesn't have as much control over it, not to mention how Jabra uses tricks and such. It goes far beyond just simple numbers and one reason I love the series so much.
Well done on the perspective, made so much sense and I finally can comprehend the Power Scaling to Mihawk (till proven otherwise) BEST Mihawk analysis I've seen thus far.

He only wonders on Shanks territories. There's no information that Mihawk wanders around other Yonko territories.
I believe it was stated somewhere that Mihawk was famous for his swordskills even before Gold Rogers death. I dont know if the implication was that he was the best swordsman by then, but he certainly was a well known swordsman. And he trained relentlessly for many years to reach that point.

When Mihawk said that being a pirate king is "harder than surpassing me" thats because surpassing mihawk is just a challenge of strength or combat ability. To become a pirate king is harder because there are a lot of factors to it, such as finding the poneglyphs, besting the other yonko, having a fleet and strong crew, and much more. That is why I believe that the position of pirate king does not mean to be the strongest. Don't get me wrong, the pirate king has to be strong, at least up there among the strongest in the world, but not necessarily the strongest.

I think the big one is that becoming Pirate King means taking on the World Government. Which as we can see, Mihawk is not willing to do. Not that Mihawk is not powerful enough, but it is a responsibility that is heavier than just being a great swordsman.
When Jinbei says to Big Mom that he isn't afraid of a MERE Yonko because he will be the next pirate king's subordinate should be telling enough about the strength of a pirate king. Anyone we've seen with the title "strongest" (i.e. creature or man) has been yonko level. So hypothetically if we put Mihawk on Yonko level, which is reasonable, then becoming the pirate king could mean that you'd be more powerful the strongest known characters in the entire series.

This video and the one Sawyer did on Sabo were somehow simple yet rare. No scaling or presumptions to a general comparisons, just a look at the facts
The Sabo vid he did was great analysis, not saying what others say like "Since Sabo is revolutionary commander he's obviously as strong as ...". He actually brokedown Sabo's journey and showed us how he got to commander and why he is like his small yet important fight with Kuma, not just "you should know everything that's gone on already" then creating even more discussion on where his power level is at

Swordsman cutting within the rhythm of the material makes a lot sense in terms of the Jozu argument, especially now that we know more about what Koshiro’s teachings meant during Act II Wano. I always thought the scene was supposed to mean either swordsmen in general were unable to cut diamond (without haki at least), or that he couldn’t indirectly cut Jozu with a flying slash, he’d have to put in actual effort.
I’m surprised Mihawk aiming a casual slash at Luffy but slicing a mountain sized iceberg in half wasn’t brought up in the video, though. I feel like that feat’s kinda overlooked at times depending on whichever part of the fandom you’re interacting with.

My questions are:
1.Just what type of achievements he has,in order for the whole world to acknowledge him the best?
2.Also,the dude is the only pirate without a crew,yet nobody dares to attack him?
3.He is not subordinated to anyone,same for Ryuma,to which,does this imply that the status gives you enough power to stand at the same level with yonkos, WG leaders?
Being part of the schikibukai was more of a way to stop dealing with the marines,and a way for Oda to keep him under check,i believe that whatever happenned on his island with the marines coming after him,will be a big hint in just how powerfull he really is.

Lets put it like this: If Zoro cannot at least high diff battle with Luffy at the end of the series, then I think Oda has failed us. Zoro's goal is strength, he wants his name to reach the heavens. There's no way we're gonna get a lukewarm sendoff to Zoro's arc after all this time.
I think Mihawk's place is a man who can stand up to anyone else in the series and have a chance of beating them. I don't think there's any opponent, not even the yonko, that can low diff fight Mihawk. However, is he stronger than Kaido and Big Mom? I don't think so.
Remember, as characters gain strength in One Piece, one notable feature is that their fights usually take a long time. It can get to a point where you get so strong, that your endurance in battle matters more than anything else. I see it as the winner would be whoever had a good day, and continued to be more relentless and durable.
Luffy will probably surpass Roger's strength at the end of the series. No, I definitely think he will. Therefore, I think Zoro too will stand at the pinnacle of every other character. End of story Zoro would be able to battle a yonko and win, in my opinion. Not easily, but possibly.

Counter argument, then how did he cut the ice with the same said slash? If you can only intend a slash to cut one thing, then that slash wouldnt have done anything to Whitebeard. And if a slash can be meant to cut more than one thing, he could have easily tried again to get passed jozu (easily like people say he would) and accomplish what he was trying to the first time

The reason mihawk didn't attempt another slash was 1. Mihawk respects and acknowledge whitebeard power and more importantly his character 2. That slash was a question more than an attack and mihawk got his answer

That didn't foreshadow Future Sight. That foreshadowed precognition Observation Haki. That's a basic technique of Observation Haki. Luffy stating his arms would have been cut off is literally a future vision he saw which is foreshadowing Future Sight. Most Observation Haki users have the precognition ability but not Future Sight. Even Luffy had precognition when dodging Hody Jones' Shark Arrows but that wasn't Future Sight.

After so many replies, this edit seems out of place. But now that I think about it, only an old experienced Rayleigh had the haki to compete with Kizaru.
It would be weird to see Zoro achieve such a feat so soon with relatively low experience.
(I feel the same way about Luffy awakening his DF when it possibly took much longer for even Doffy to do it and many other grizzled pirates haven't managed to awaken theirs.)

The Fighting One no, Luffy won’t be stronger than the yonko much like Rodger wasn’t that much stronger if at all than those at the top of the powerscale in his time. He’ll be just as strong as a Yonko.
I feel like you've been saying the same thing over and over about Whitebeard's division commanders.
It's stated that they are not ranked by what division commander they are. For example, Ace was the 2nd division commander only because there was an opening, NOT because he suddenly became the second strongest in the crew.
Normally not worth commenting that, but this seems to be the second power-scaling theory video that has been using this misconception and it doesn't do your analysis any good.

Mihawk stopped sparring with Shanks because he lost his arm. Granted, Shanks wasn't a Yonko when he still had his arm at that time but he is now.
So that stands to reason that Shanks has grown in strength since becoming a Yonko. However, Mihawk refuses to fight him now because he lost his arm.
One can infer that Mihawk refuses to fight Shanks because he's at a disadvantage without that left arm, most likely his dominant sword hand.
Mihawk is Yonkou level, he was half of the shichibukai's power.
Why is this hard to get? If Oda wanted Mihawk to be "Yonko level", he'd make him a Yonko. The point Oda was trying to make was there are at least four pirates that are STRONGER than even the greatest swordsman in the world. The hype of the title isn't for Mihawk, it's for the guys that are even stronger than he is.
I personally think Mihawk, Kuma, Jimbei then Hancock, in that order. Rest of them are washed up. Lol Arlong is tuna, Gecko Moria is mia with Blackbeard, "I pray for him, and his revenge against Kaido", and Crocodile does whatever he wants, he/she doesn't care.

Well if Zoro endgame opponent is Mihawk then he has to be atleast as strong as Prime Rayleigh because Imo Zoro will be the Rayleigh to luffys Roger and since one piece is about the new Gen surpassing the old gen,Zoro beating Mihawk and surpassing Rayleigh would make sense because Luffy will probably surpass Roger by the end of the series.

JoseRufus what kind of interpretation is that? He saw the future.... in that exact moment reading that panel I knew that eventually futur foresight would come into play. It has all been foreshadowed since the very beginning. Conquer haki was showcased throughout the series before we knew what it was and now the advanced armament haki we see now was also foreshadowed long ago by Zoro.

@@MusaMansu the last time they fought was a decade ago because mihawk didn’t want to fight a one armed shanks. And shanks became a Yonko six years ago so I definitely think shanks is now in his prime as mihawk is older than him. Shanks might have better technique than shanks but absolute strength and haki definitely goes to shanks. Plus kaido didn’t even mention him when listing off the strongest pirates he knows. And if mihawk is Yonko level that means zoro and Luffy will be similar in strength and would break the co capitan and captain relationship. Plus Rayleigh wasn’t even as strong as roger and the straw hats are supposed to parallel them at most mihawk is admiral or as strong as scopper Gabon or Oden. And as a Yonko big mom two shot queen while mihawk was going at it with vista. - It's not fair to just completely dismiss Vista being able to hold Mihawk just because he had a ...thought. Come on, be fair, we've seen multiple Yonko Commander level guys capable of fighting Admirals for a bit: Jozu vs Aokiji, Marco vs Kizaru, Luffy vs Fuji, etc. So it's not unreasonable for Vista to be able to hold Mihawk. Marco didn't even bother to take on Mihawk himself, he told Vista to go handle his lightweight ...and Vista did😎. Give the Flower man some credit, even Mihawk himself said only a fool wouldn't know Vista by name.
- Mihawk never faced Jinbe in the manga, that was utter nonsense. Were talking about someone who fought Ace for 5 days, blocked a magma fist with his bare hands, and sent Big Mom flying off the Sunny. Oda has only shown Jinbe to be a beast, and that scene of disrespect was pure anime bullshit filler.

i think a question we need to adress bevor the "is xxx as strong as a yonko" talk is how strong is a yonko actually? and are there all equal? and like we see with the admirals fujitora and greenbull there are crazy strong guys out there who might just dont care about world politics and therefor are not yonkos even if they could potentialy be as strong as one... like more pple from rogers crew or rocks crew ore wildcards like dragon and garp and so on.

I miss the chapter reviews but at the same time I really do enjoy these topic discussion videos what makes me love this channel so much is how very observant Sawyer is as well as clearly being intelligent hardcore facts I love it these are the things that I love about the community when it comes to manga anime or even video game sometimes is collecting enough data to give a decent enough assessment being as accurate as possible . My guess is that he is above the admirals but weaker that most of the yonko. This is where I also put shanks in the range of as well. Of course it's a bit hard to judge since they haven't really fought yet but I think it's where the small clues we have gotten has placed them

@@system5660 I'd argue that's an old title and he is no longer that strong due to his sickness. But even if that's not the case even with practically no haki he was ahead of the admirals. They could not land significant blows until he litterally feel defenseless from sickness where anyone could hurt him. Before then he easily broke out of Kuzans ice and batted away Akainus lava. And despite being pretty much unharmed Akainus couldn't dodge wb despite having observation haki, litterally being warned, and wb was suffering pretty much fatal wounds. And the next attack litterally sent him flying through the island. Marineford didn't imply even imply equal status let alone admiral superiority.
Also perhaps even more importantly is that it makes no sense in a lore perspective. The entire balance of the world makes zero sense if they were that strong and yonko crews would not even exist.

In my opinion "swordsman" in one piece are overated , what about marksman for example, what if oda give a character title "strongest marksman" , is he gonna equal to mihawk? Is the strongest marksman equal to strongest swordsman? The diference is only in their weapon. But i think people will keep mihawk/swordman above everything

talking about mihawk, is like talking about zoro, in a way. People jump to conclusions without analyzing the characters, and their journey ... i know why in the story zoro have to not be too strong so that luffy dose not look too bad, but he is ... for that oda made luffy and sanji catching up to zoro's level with the big mom arc.
Can't really compare Zoro & Mihawk. Mihawk is literally the World's Strongest Swordsman with a black blade. I believe once Zoro's swords become black blades, then he can fight Mihawk.
One Piece powerscaling has always been toxic. I personally think Shanks and Mihawk are equal although I would give a slight edge to Shanks until I see more. If they fought 10 times though Shanks would win 5 and Mihawk would win 5.

Nah. You're using head canon to make it more complicated than it is. The Yonko are the four strongest pirates. Period. All the other pirates are therefore by definition, weaker. That's it.

Power in One Piece is measured by influence not just individual strength. Also you're putting too much emphasis on the title of yonko. Old and sick Whitebeard was known as the strongest man in the world and that was most certainly not true based on his showings in Marineford. In fact at that time he was probably the weakest yonko. The admirals are stated to be the strongest marines, does that mean Garp is weaker than them because he's a vice admiral? Of course not, Oda uses titles to subvert expectations.
Talking about crews is head canon. The Yonko are the four strongest pirates as stated. Whitebeard was still the strongest man in the world as stated. He took a sword from Squard. Shanks got Kaido not to show, but his clash with Whitebeard split the heavens and Whitebeard still went to save his "son".
Oda explained Garp. There is no subversion because Oda stated Garp to be the strongest Marine and he is. None of this in his prime head canon nonsense. Garp is the strongest marine, Whitebeard was the strongest man until he was dealt with. Admirals are the marines' counter force to the Yonko. The Yonko are the four strongest pirates and all the other pirates are not as strong. When a Yonko is defeated, Oda will write it down and we'll all know if it was by strength or trickery or treachery (or all three as in the case of Whitebeard)
