I make LARP safe weapons and use similar construction, just with LARP safe materials. Watching you make the sword and especially the shield has inspired me to up my game!! Great job!! I can't wait to try some new techniques.
For a similar effect on the handle you can get badminton grip tape which is meant to be wrapped like that, so one side is already sticky. Plus it comes in many colours!

Ii love that you are using the laser to cut EVA foam - it is so much faster to draw things in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator and cut them that way. It also makes it easier to share patterns. I just wish that the setting for cutting foam were easier to share.
