I have been a serious amateur Black Metalist for over almost 25 years and Sunbather is one of the best compositions I have ever heard, damn in any genre for that, and props to the hipsters for doing this, whoever that is.

@@wjspencer95 9 months late, but some other bands you might like are alcest (the OG band of the genre), oathbreaker (their more recent stuff. they used to be metalcore), an autumn for crippled children, and sadness.

People get so butthurt when a genre they like starts to get a lil bit mainstream. Some say this isn't black metal. It's definitely not pop either. People so narrow minded & elitist now a days just shut up and enjoy something new & fresh for once.

well, its because of the different genres of the bands that play. I think the Pitchfork guys are too lazy to change the audio settings for deafheaven
Gotta admit this would be a more difficult than average band to mix. Especially if the previous band was The Arctic Monkeys or some other Pitchfork standard. haha
i think it might be very difficult to mix black metal (black-ish metal) for an outdoor venue

It's hilarious that so many people think this band is terrible. Sunbather is a tremendous album, forget genre, ignore looks, just listen to the MUSIC! If you don't like it because it's not black metal, fine, go listen to some black metal. just remember a black metal band without corpse paint are just posers. And if they record with anything other than a 4 track cassette recorder they are sell outs. #realblackmetal
***** I never claimed Sunbather was a death metal or a shoegazer album (whatever the fuck shoegazer is). I just made the point that people that get stuck worshiping a genre and disliking anything that doesn't fit in their own idea of what the genre is, or who the artists look or act, miss out on some great music out of pure spite. Black Metal and Modern Metal in general has felt stale and cheesy to me for a long time. This band I don't care how you categorize them feels fresh. Another thing that has kept me away from the Metal genre are the fans. They come off as elitists that can't stand change. Anything that is remotely different from what they've heard for years is immediately blown off and labeled hipster.
Right? A good buddy of mine is so closed minded when I showed the bands I listen to he said "Man! listen to real metal like metallica!" Oh wow... And he's such a gifted guitarist, shame on these closed minded pricks.
It's only the hardcore metal dudes that hate bands like this. I've tried countless times to listen to traditional Black Metal and just can't take it seriously. They're trying way too hard to be evil. All the costumes and lyrics about Satan and castles. It's ridiculous.
I like the new Behemoth album; but yes I fully agree. The costumes and that #lookatmeiamevil is just too silly for words. Fun when you are 12.

Darkthrone seem to take themselves less seriously, and I've been able to get into their stuff, but I know what you mean. There's a certain cheesiness to early bm.

I think that the stark dichotomy between the singer's feverish movements and the guitarist's based presence is quite effective.

Ok. First time hearing this band. Spacey interlude deftones style no double kick drum weirdness. Its not Black Metal but by using the vocal element it makes makes their sonic texture very unique. A possible closer inspection but tbh I have other metal to bang too.
post rock influenced black metal has been around since the fucking 90s, you not knowing these bands doesnt make deafheaven the revelation of the bm genre, get over it.

deafheaven is great but this is the first ive seen a live video. glad i saw this though now i know not to bother seeing them live. its not their performance, its the crowd that would unfortunately kill it for me

I'm not even sure if I would consider Deafheaven a metal band. Sure there are metal elements [obviously including the vocals] but everything else is post-rock. That's not a bad thing though.

This sounded so much better live and whoever was in charge of mixing this totally fucked up. It sounds nothing like it did live or in the album. The vocals have absolutely nothing to give them atmosphere. The guitars are hardly present at all. The bass takes up way too much space in the mix. The drums have no clarity.
I'm glad I still have my memory of this performance because the sound in this video fucking ruined it for me.
