Misleading is an understatement! When I first listened to the Sunbather album for the first time, I looked at the album cover and thought it was some kind of vaporwave album!
In my humble opinion George Clarke is the most intense frontman out there now. Not that it should ever be a competition but the way he psyche himself up for these performances is just on a another level...Met him after a concert a couple of years ago, he was on the brink of exhaustion...Raw emotion...Damn...
the combination of heavy shoegaze sounds drenched in reverb and then the black metal style in the singing make for a perfect combination. This huge wall of sound is the ideal situation to be screaming.
@@pedrododI never thought that a rock/metal sub genre would exist. It was thanks to two UA-cam Channels that talk about Blackgaze. I both love it, Deafheaven & Alcest are my favorite Blackgaze bands.
"I still don't understand how these kinds of vocals are performed without blowing out the voice." as a person that's screamed in a hardcore & never used a mic - don't give a fuck, the emotional connection to the song matters - not if you blow out the voice. who cares if you cough up blood. seriously. lol
The vocal performance in this video is absolutely soul wrenching unlike most black vocalist he doesn't scream in one monotonous manner he really tries to phrase each section differently by changing pitch, volume and altering from high's and lows and top it all off he does this with such emotion it just drives the music so well. Unbelievable performance by one of the most unique band's in the world at the minute.
holy shit i never even thought about that, you're so fucking right. the conditioning to get to where he's at now must've been absolute hell. much respect to the guy

I had the privilege of working with these guys when they performed in my theatre earlier this year. Being there to absorb the whole process was awesome. SItting there alone in the auditorium while they sound checked was like having my own private gig and I was happy to give them feedback in regards to the mix, because I am pretty sure but not certain when I say that our guy on the desk who was in control of the mix had never even heard of the band before. Getting to work with artists like these guy is why I work in live entertainment. Happy to say that were totally down to earth and a pleasure to have on stage. I'd say he is rather, well, standard, if that's the right word. He just follows the song, nothing creative there. Check out Azarath's drummer, Decapitated's Vitek, Inferno from Behemoth, etc.
Hahaha, yeah I am a bit. But honestly though, I prize "following the song" above creativity. You could play really creatively in regards to composition, sound and feel, but if it doesn't fit into the context of the song it won't really sound good. In Dream House the blast beats melds perfectly with the beautiful strummed chords and creates this chaos in an otherwise wistful, almost transcendental wall of sound. This really fits the composition and makes the emotional impression of the song more profound, and ultimately more beautiful. I'm not saying "don't be creative" but rather to be creative within the boundaries of the song. So in short, If you deliver what the song needs it will sound killer. Btw I'm not really talking shit about Vitek, he's fucking phenomenal (Day 69, phew) and let me tell you this, he delivered. Cheers.

The technical ability of Deafheaven is something I feel is often overlooked. How these guys tremolo pick, blast beat and scream their brains out for 40+ minutes is beyond me 🙌🏻
Kudos to whoever did the audio for this - it sounds incredible. I can only imagine the engineer pulling their hair out every time the singer wrapped his fingers around the mic. Can't even call that cupping. Jesus.
I think with the dynamics of his screaming technique he'd need to cup the mic to get the full effect. He sounds incredible tho. I can't complain with any thing the sound guy or the band did

cherryfirebird i disagree I think it would be way more monotonous without it. Blackgaze can sound very repetitive if you don't have something that stands out to break it up.

It just feels like since they became popular, in reviews and commentary about other bands with similar sounds always seem to bring up Deafheaven, and it's annoying. It's kind of how I used to feel with Tool and prog during Tool's peak - a lot of Tool fans would tell you all day and night that Tool is THE prog metal band, and that they are the standard that other prog metal bands should be compared to. Even though Tool is great, it's annoying to see them come up when you're reading about a band you actually think is better than them, despite being in the same genre. Just to re-state; I think Deafheaven is great. I also think it's great that people who weren't previously into metal or even this specific type of metal are getting into it through Deafheaven. It's just frustrating when a lot of those fans think this type of music started when they discovered it; with Deafheaven. A lot of long-time fans think that's patently false and it's annoying to see people say it a lot. Plus there's always some animosity in some metal fan circles towards the band that brings in droves of fans that weren't previously fans of the genre, and they project onto them the lowest-common denominator among them - the guy who thinks Deafheaven is this revolutionary band that was the first to uncover an innovative new sound and that there are just a bunch of Deafheaven-copycats. That guy might not be very common, but he's definitely out there. That's just my take on it anyways. My finger isn't as much on the pulse of the metal community as much as it once was, but that's precisely because things like this seem to happen all the time. As per usual, there are *far* more comments talking about how shitty the metal community is for arguing all the time, and seemingly very few comments of people actually arguing about genres or whatever. That guy is also really fucking annoying - sees a couple buried comments of people scrapping over something stupid and then says ""oh I'm so much better than the metal community, look at those losers argue over nothing. I love this music but I'm infinitely more cultured and mature than all you other losers who love this music" and then a dozen people upvoting and agreeing "oh yeah tell me about it, metal fans arguing are so lame", meanwhile the actual argument is long gone, and we're left with what the "metal community" has actually become, which is a bunch of hipsters claiming to be better than the imaginary straw-man metalhead with his rules and pretensions that lives for arguing with other metalheads. That guy doesn't even exist anymore, but the guy that thinks he's so much better than the non-existent guy and wants to tell you about it is fucking everywhere. It's especially frustrating when two fans are having a courteous discussion about influences and, yes, labels (*gasp* what a loser) and that asshole comes in "QUIET you plebs stop arguing about bullshit like the metal losers you are and just enjoy the music like I am, gosh you guys are so pathetic". Some people like to analyze music, and more often than not it's not some flamewar argument about who's tastes are better, but just a casual dissection of how certain fans see the music. But maybe I'm just taking it personally because that's happened to me, and I do get a kick out of trying to pin down genres and influences, if for no other reason than it is fun and does in fact help me find other music I enjoy. Basically it just feels like a lot of music bloggers/journalists as well as fans on social media have never actually been to a metal show, and yet have all these ideas about what the ''other' metal fans are like, presumably based off youtube comments or their own prejudices. I guess you could say there's a fair amount of Deafheaven fans that fall into that category.
I might have already this on this very video two years ago but SO much respect for this drummer for playing like this for 40 fucking minutes. how are his legs even still working?? fucking props!
It's weird how long it took for me to get into them. I was not into them at all years ago, but these past few months stumbled upon bands like Alcest and Oathbreaker and fell in love with the ambient post-rock/black metal sound. Now that I decided to revisit Deafheaven, I realize these guys are incredible. It just took some time.
Hipster post rock, pop and shoegaze with some sub par black metal thrown in. Check out Blut Aus Nord if you want some forward thing and original black metal.
Different kinds of black metal for different kinds of moods. Blackgaze for the days I feel like an angsty teen, old school for the days where my hatred is strong, DSBM for the days I really want to die and folk-influenced stuff when I dream of a simpler life in the woods were I grew up. Variety is something that should be praised, not shunned. Of course, you don't have to like it but it's crucial for the survival of the genre(s)
+DaDankDarlesCharwin Idk if I've ever listened to Wolves in the Throne Room and felt like an angsty teen, but... sure. Idk if I've ever listened to Lantlôs and felt like an angsty teen, but... sure. Idk if I've ever listened to amesoeurs and felt like an angsty teen, but... sure. Have you ever heard of a "new" type of blackgaze called "folk-influenced blackgaze"? It will blow your mind.
I've never been more moved by a band as much as Deafheaven. Ever since I first got into it, I've always viewed black metal as a poetic and contemplative art form and I've never really associated moshing or violence with it at all, despite the history of its Norwegian influence. Deafheaven so perfectly captures that essence of beauty that lingers behind such a powerful genre and twists it into their own unique sound. They really know how to trigger all of the emotions at once, which I feel is a key factor to be considered while creating any kind of art.
If you think black metal is about beauty, you are mistaken. And no, it isnt about "evil" and "grimness" either. But thats fine, you are free to enjoy Deafheaven and other such "beautiful" introspective, motivational lifestyle music. But it has nothing to do with black metal.
I think black metal is a genre that is good for conveying passion. The soundscape is so thick and coupled with the screeching vocals it really does sound passionate.
+Stephen Bennett Death Metal vocals are very low and growling with some high pitched screams, check out Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under and Deicide for examples. Hope this helps 👍
I like some Black Metal albums and I know that this is not pure BM but Blackgaze or what. This music is so beautiful. Lots of people probably can't understand it but this melodic and extreme music at the same time is very beautiful. I can't even describe it by the words how I feel when I'm listening to it. I'm suffering from hard depression for over 3 years and you don't even know how relief it is when I'm listening to this music. When I'm low and I hear this screaming I always imagine me doing that. It's so emotional that it's driving me to tears but it's beautiful.
UA-cam COMMENTS INSTEAD OF GOING OUT AND STARTING MY OWN BAND WHERE I FEEL PASSION AND EMOTION I WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET BECAUSE I AM BITTER AND JEALOUS THAT SOMEBODY ELSE IS TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND I AM NOT UA-cam COMMENTS
Toxin08 comments are necessary when your idea of a band 'trying something different' is actually just Pitchfork and Spin Magazine 's latest re-branding of a derivative sound (*cough SCREAMO). You're defending a MARKETING TOOL that happens to be a band.
So amazed and impressed. I thought black metal was dying out, then I discover these guys keepin' it real and relevant to reality, breaking every stereotype. Respect! Refreshing, and awesome performance.
I always thought he had a massive ego problem, but after speaking with the drummer of a band that opened for them (No Spill Blood) and him saying that they are an amazing bunch of guys, who are incredibly humble, it made me rethink it completely. His stage presence is through the fucking roof.
20:03 This is the emotional apex of the track and DFHVN threw in a breakdown for good measure. The audience didn't know what they were witnessing and they are just awestruck.
Justin Zymbaluk I used to be a death metal singer, and Ive also watched countless death and black metal vocalists in the past. Ofcourse, some form of intensity is needed in order to bring this sound out of your body. This dude is just way over the top I mean... are these movements really necessary when he's not singing for 2 minutes straight? Well maybe they are for him.. I personally prefer to just listen to the album
I saw these guys live last week. His hand movements were really distracting to me. I don't know what purpose they serve, for him or for anyone else. I guess once you got used to seeing it it might be OK, but just looks pretentious to me.
Beachgothhoneybear 87 Lol it's true. When you go on to a metal video and see little girls with dan and phil profile pictures asking if their cancerous "phandom" is there, it really makes me not want to stay
I watched this via the live stream as it was being recorded and was so/so on it. I keep coming back to it and love it more and more each time i watch it. solid, solid shit
What a captivating performance. The singer has me in the palm of his clenched fist. I keep coming back to this vid cos of his sheer intensity. Gives me chills every time.😊
+PAJ DrumsnGuitar The US community is embarrassing. Stop making sentences starting with Oh my God and finishing with Jesus Christ, putting a fuck-fucking-fuckity in between, they're all totally obsolete swear words. Think for yourself, question authority.
PAJ DrumsnGuitar Classifying is identifying, putting away the fear of the void and unknown for the simple minds and the weak ones. It takes away a huge part of freedom (speech, music writing, etc) but it holds the cattle together so I won't say it's good or bad. I'll just say it is necessarily pain for the free ones not kill the fragile ones because of their weaknesses.
I like all kinds of metal. These guys are in a class all by themselves. Love being able to listen to stuff that doesn't pay homage to the devil. Raw intelligent and emotion lyrics. These guys are going to be in my top 10 for a long while. Wish I would have discovered them sooner.
I didn't really give this band much of a chance at first, but after listening to Sunbather in its entirety I regret not giving them a chance earlier. The atmosphere this band projects in both their music and live performance is amazing, who would've thought shoegaze melody mixed so well with black metal brutality.
I must've watched this performance a few billion times by now and I maintain my position that the magic of Sunbather is in the mixing of the vocals and guitars. It's incredibly solid live, but it's not the same feeling. Vocals do give it a warmer vibe if they're lower in the mix.
Holy shit this set kills. Some guitar troubles early on, but holy crap this is brutal. Drummer is killing it, and the singer is fucking bringing mad energy. Doesn't matter that its 2 or 3 in the afternoon, this shit is dark. So awesome.
when I listen to your music, I am overwhelmed with a deep, unplaceable sense of nostalgia and loneliness. The tones and melodies of your synth work transcend the eras they emulate. You capture feelings better than any artist I know. I don't have a question. I just want to thank you for all your amazing work which has been incredibly important in my life
Have you wondered why that might have been? For a moment you could see his torso covered in tattoos until he buttoned his shirt up again. I’m guessing he did that (and also why he wears long sleeves) is that his tattoos are very personal and are not for public viewing. Maybe I’m wrong, but…..

I might have already this on this very video two years ago but SO much respect for this drummer for playing like this for 40 fucking minutes. how are his legs even still working?? fucking props!
have u ever seen death grips live? they play for like an hour and some straight and zach is just going insane the entire time lmao
Look at how simple his drum set is, too. Just the essentials.
truth! simple and the most effective
Jay Cotrone Melt Banana are amazing live.
why? he's not even playing any double bass lol he's an awesome drummer but as far as speed there's a ton of drummers who astound me way more than this
It's weird how long it took for me to get into them. I was not into them at all years ago, but these past few months stumbled upon bands like Alcest and Oathbreaker and fell in love with the ambient post-rock/black metal sound. Now that I decided to revisit Deafheaven, I realize these guys are incredible. It just took some time.
A career defining performance for sure
My new favorite metal band, their newest album New Bermuda is insane!
+Reikoreigan Reseñas i think its way better than sunbather
I feel sorry for you if you think this is metal.
It may not be black metal, I agree, but if it's not metal, what is it?
Hipster post rock, pop and shoegaze with some sub par black metal thrown in. Check out Blut Aus Nord if you want some forward thing and original black metal.
What a HUGE performance by George Clarke ! Just wow.
Still getting back to this live after 5 years. It's just perfect.
How this guy's larynx doesn't shoot out onto the stage after a while and land as a bloody, pulsing blob is beyond me.
Technique.
It's just what metal singers do
There's secretly a dude behind feeding him bottles of water idk. 🤣
I love his vocals. I wish they were higher in the mix on the album version. However, the buried vocals give it a special sound too.
+DaDankDarlesCharwin pigeon holes are only good for 1 thing .shit
+DaDankDarlesCharwin Idk if I've ever listened to Wolves in the Throne Room and felt like an angsty teen, but... sure.
Idk if I've ever listened to Lantlôs and felt like an angsty teen, but... sure.
Idk if I've ever listened to amesoeurs and felt like an angsty teen, but... sure.
Have you ever heard of a "new" type of blackgaze called "folk-influenced blackgaze"? It will blow your mind.
+DaDankDarlesCharwin Ugh; "Blackgaze". Jesus Christ..........
pigeon holes are only good for one thing. shit
black gaze its not fucking black metal
I don't think the guitarist on the far right got the dark clothes memo
he stands out on purpose, as the main songwriter. i'm sure you know that by now though
Dark clothes are for wimps.
ik i’m 4 years late on this response , but to be fair - their album cover was pink
nice shoes
LOL
y
Thanks Karl!
stop gazing
Yeah I was gazing at them too
I've never been more moved by a band as much as Deafheaven.
Lol ok
I think black metal is a genre that is good for conveying passion. The soundscape is so thick and coupled with the screeching vocals it really does sound passionate.
BaconJets I couldn't agree more.
8:46 is so epic!!! look at the sweat or is it a tear? running down his face!! can't wait to see these guys again!
probably sweat but it's cool anyway
Seriously.

I think its saliva
@@altrumodi5694 IS A TEAR, HE IS CRYING, that is so VERY beautiful
the singer has tamed demons with that scream, fuckin epic
+emerica4u what
+emerica4u I've always preferred death metal vocals over black, but black vocals always sound fucking possessed
I love the bassist, he seems on endorphins playing in slow motion grind-tempo parts
+H.R.T. Fantisma jajaja hes so chill like a tamed tiger, just fucking grooving
I wanna live in his universe. Hop on that bass line and take a riiiiiddddeeee.....

Toxin08 Well said. People are silly.
Toxin08 Well, that describes like 99.9999% of UA-cam comments. Lol.
17:28 is probably one of the most intense live moments I’ve seen.
the most intense song on the album !
100%
The mix on this is crystallllll. that voice!! those guitars.... that DRUMMERRRRRRR!!!!!
I'm convinced that if they didn't look the way they do that most people who hate on them would be fans.
I thought the same
"scene is an image of society"
Elitists don’t like it because it mixes atmospheric black metal and post rock (blackgaze) with screamo vocals. But i love it, elitists gon hate.
@@gabiocampos these are not really screamo vocals though? Sounds a lot like original bm vocals to me, just in a different setting.
I like this band, however they do seem to go out of their way to dress like a bunch of Portland dipshits 😂
Very rarely have a heard a gig that's mixed this good, especially for a metal band. I mean the sound is ridiculously amazing. Not to mention the band.
He has such a perfect scream
4-й раз уже смотрю этот лайв. Шик.
i saw this fucking band live in Brazil, and now i'm addicted to your music
did they come to brazil? why do i only start listening to bands after they come here and cant go to their shows?

His stage presence if wow.....speechless for a black metal band
I always thought he had a massive ego problem, but after speaking with the drummer of a band that opened for them (No Spill Blood) and him saying that they are an amazing bunch of guys, who are incredibly humble, it made me rethink it completely. His stage presence is through the fucking roof.
I've always loved how ritualistic they are when they perform too, especially george
20:03 This is the emotional apex of the track and DFHVN threw in a breakdown for good measure. The audience didn't know what they were witnessing and they are just awestruck.
this band is pure emotion. Chaos and beauty at the same time. Its gorgeous
I love this guy's voice.
His absurd bodily movements traumatize me though
+E Schur It's tough to make the sounds he's making without those movements. The intensity he puts into those vocals comes through in his body
Justin Zymbaluk I used to be a death metal singer, and Ive also watched countless death and black metal vocalists in the past.
Ofcourse, some form of intensity is needed in order to bring this sound out of your body.
This dude is just way over the top
I mean... are these movements really necessary when he's not singing for 2 minutes straight?
Well maybe they are for him..
I personally prefer to just listen to the album
Reminds me of a young Maynard James Keenan
I saw these guys live last week. His hand movements were really distracting to me. I don't know what purpose they serve, for him or for anyone else. I guess once you got used to seeing it it might be OK, but just looks pretentious to me.
Ghese guys helped me get a new phone at t mobile. Had no idea they were such talented musicians
this guys got some crazy vocals.
Truly one of the greatest bands of this decade.
I keep going back to this. The sound engineers on this are gods
My all-time favorite band! I can't even tell you how many times I've watched this.
I rewaxh this like 5 times a week last 1 year 🎉
Drummers are the unsung heroes of black metal. blasting for 5-10 minutes straight is no joke.
The current metal community is the reason why it's not expanding any longer.
yea the elitists and fangirls ruin it for everyone
fucking sexist piece of shit
Beachgothhoneybear 87 Lol it's true. When you go on to a metal video and see little girls with dan and phil profile pictures asking if their cancerous "phandom" is there, it really makes me not want to stay
tracts lol right-o

This soothing wave of shoegaze riff in old school black metal crispy guitar tone with George’s somehow warm scream is breathtaking. Im lost of words.
this was so ahead of its time when it came out I remember being so confused but fascinated by vocals
yeah, they're good at that. It's so intense yet so calming at the same time
oh my god, he smiled 34:16
I was looking for this comment. thanks
i havent seen a more passionate live show than deafheaven, except maybe being as an ocean
maketotaldestroy seen them too. They kick major ass.
Check out some of Letlive's live shows
BryAttak ive seen videos
+mac cavanah ever heard about slayer?
derunsympath nooooo, never heard of slayer in my life ever as a metal fan lol
I watched this via the live stream as it was being recorded and was so/so on it.
I keep coming back to it and love it more and more each time i watch it. solid, solid shit
One of the most solid live shows I've seen! Totally awesome!
Such amazing band and one of the best live shows I ever saw.
What a captivating performance. The singer has me in the palm of his clenched fist. I keep coming back to this vid cos of his sheer intensity. Gives me chills every time.😊
This is the first metal song to make me cry
As a fan of all metal I’m glad this band exists to piss off black metal wieners. You guys fucking rule.
Oh my god the metal community is embarrassing. Stop putting rules on everything and enjoy the fucking music. Jesus Christ.
+PAJ DrumsnGuitar The US community is embarrassing.
Stop making sentences starting with Oh my God and finishing with Jesus Christ, putting a fuck-fucking-fuckity in between, they're all totally obsolete swear words.
Think for yourself, question authority.
+TheSheer96 you literally just put rules on everything as well.... See what i mean?
PAJ DrumsnGuitar
I'm asking for something, giving my opinion and now you're taking my opinion as an order ?
Who has a problem with authority... ? ;)
+TheSheer96 hahaha no point in arguing dude. I just hate how they have to classify EVERYTHING. Ya feel?
PAJ DrumsnGuitar
Classifying is identifying, putting away the fear of the void and unknown for the simple minds and the weak ones.
It takes away a huge part of freedom (speech, music writing, etc) but it holds the cattle together so I won't say it's good or bad.
I'll just say it is necessarily pain for the free ones not kill the fragile ones because of their weaknesses.
"The music's gotten boring because of the people who want everyone to sound the same."
Essa live é uma obra de arte, Deafheaven faz músicas tão boas que nem parece que estão ao vivo.
Verdade meu colega, além de suprir expectativas.
Muito foda🤘🇧🇷
Pqp
Camera man should put much more atention to the drummer. He really deserves.
Beautiful.
потрясающая подача, вдохнули жизнь в блэк метал сорвав маски \
I like all kinds of metal. These guys are in a class all by themselves. Love being able to listen to stuff that doesn't pay homage to the devil. Raw intelligent and emotion lyrics. These guys are going to be in my top 10 for a long while. Wish I would have discovered them sooner.
You can feel the energy just radiating off their vocalist
I didn't really give this band much of a chance at first, but after listening to Sunbather in its entirety I regret not giving them a chance earlier. The atmosphere this band projects in both their music and live performance is amazing, who would've thought shoegaze melody mixed so well with black metal brutality.
I must've watched this performance a few billion times by now and I maintain my position that the magic of Sunbather is in the mixing of the vocals and guitars. It's incredibly solid live, but it's not the same feeling. Vocals do give it a warmer vibe if they're lower in the mix.
I see way more comments complaining about lame comments, than lame comments themselves :D !
I just want to thank you for all your amazing work which has been incredibly important in my life
I love watching bands play at these types of festivals and seeing how the crowd reacts to them.
Drummer is solid as fuck, even if he looks like he's about to play the back 9.
kind of lol he was fucking everyone up in the intro of unrequited
dude needs a metronome
Couldn't believe my ears
So incredibly good
I love that George took the time to re-button his shirt. Cracked me up.
Have you wondered why that might have been? For a moment you could see his torso covered in tattoos until he buttoned his shirt up again. I’m guessing he did that (and also why he wears long sleeves) is that his tattoos are very personal and are not for public viewing. Maybe I’m wrong, but…..
He did it so fast lol
Sunbather is such a great album. Love the blending of different genres. Great musicians.
Just saw these guys early this week. Literally amazing. George interacts a lot with the crowd and has sooo much stage presence.
Deafheaven is that one band I can't listen to without getting the feels.
"I am dying"
"Is it blissful?"
"It's like a dream"
"I want to dream"
This lead vocalist has cult leader energy
The way he’s able to scream all show and still have such a soft speaking voice is crazy
эта музыка о радости, горе, печали, страхе, любви, ненависти, нужде, достатке... все существующие эмоции сплетаются в один яростный испепеляющий крик и больше ничему не остаётся места.
For me, this concert is the Deafheaven Holy Grail
I love the part at 17:25 when George is singing.
8:47
I don't know if he's sweating or tearing, maybe both.
It just breaks my heart, THIS IS AMAZING.
Hey man, you wanna take a water break!?
This is awesome in itself, even given the absolute fact that I love Slowdive. The singer’s performance is beyond any reproach. He is a conductor.
The way this was recorded really captures the emotional intensity of this set. I can only imagine seeing these guys live.
