The old timers were getting the equivalent of $20.67 per ounce. How much work would you have done for that?
It wasn't worth their effort, while today, it's at $1,668.61 USD 1 oz, or $2,491.95 AUD 1 oz and is.

For those who say you could make more working at McDonalds, over a century ago townsfolk told the prospectors they could make more working at the saloon or livery stable.
Working for someone else was Not the reason the prospectors traveled to the gold fields, finding gold and adventure, the thrill of the hunt, the hope for a golden tomorrow was, and still is, the lure of prospecting. For those who have never found a nugget, or a fly speck of gold, they will never understand.
    Follow that dream!

This was a fun video! So nice to see you hanging out with a group! I'm sure you offered helpful advice.
One of my older brothers told me once "One reason to go golfing is to go golfing. The other reason is you get to be outside in nature for four hours".
I'd imagine it's similar for prospecting. You must "see nature doing its thing" on the hike to a spot.
Not to mention how good it is for a dog ...

Chris, PLEASE properly neutralize the sodium hydroxide (caustic) after it is done “cooking” ! Water is not the way. I would hate for Fern to accidentally drink from the tub you had it cooling in, or walk on the grass where you ran the water into the cup to dilute it! If you can’t get ahold of some HCL or citric acid, a few cans of coke or Pepsi will work in a pinch. Get some PH paper/strips as well and get it to a 6-9 PH before you pour it out! Even the residue on the outside of the cup can be harmful when it hits the water in the “cooling” tub!

Those are very handy. A lot of people in the American deep South use those for hunting. They have several species of rattlesnakes and water moccasins, coral snakes and copperheads. All those except the coral snake have longer fangs than the brown snake, so you'd be pretty well protected.
