As Peter’s widow , I cannot tell you all how much happiness I get from hearing all these lovely comments. He was an underrated and aren’t, but so glad he is not forgotten completely. Certainly not by hi family and friends, and also by people who loved his music. I thank you all.
This was one of my favourite songs when I was growing up round about the sixties and seventies. A wonderful time for music. Peter had a beautiful voice.
he was a northern guy in the true tradition. fabulously talented and definately will never be forgotten by those of us who enjoyed the 1970s. he was also a real one off and very distinctive. you must miss him a great deal. love and best wishes to you and the skellern family from me in north wales.x
He was a true gent and a true talent. Highly underrated as a performer but more so as a writer, this song proves that, covered also by the great Johnny Bristol. As I sit alone in a somewhat dissassociative and depressed state, I find Peter's music lifts me out of that, and brings me peace. It brings a sense of beauty to this world and says we must all carry on.
1975, I was 16, into Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple. Pink Floyd,......then I heard this song, blew me away, realised there was such diverse music out there, opened my ears to so much more music, and for that I thank Peter Skellern.
I'm from Brazil and I was a teenager when I heard "you're a lady" for the first time. I never forgot the softness of this melody and the delicacy of the verses. Today, 50 years later, I still get emotional remembering my emotions at that time.
There were a few exceedingly talented individuals such as Peter in that era that never garnered the full recognition that they so deserved. One other that I adored with equal merit was Clifford T Ward, among others. Peter and CTW were not failures, they had chart successes, but they should rightly have been up there with McCartney, and for decades. Thank you.
First heard this when I was 14, and my voice was beginning to break. I used to envy the bloke singing the deep notes at 0:36 and elsewhere... and now I can sing along with him! Thanks for posting.
I dedicate this song to the late Ms. Gloria Eunice Elizabeth Van Cooten, my dearest departed mother. I thank her for exposing me to the best music from all genres in my youth. Thanks mum!💕🎶
I fell in love to the music Peter sang-34 years ago. I am still very much in love with my husband and We still dance to his beautiful music in our bedroom ❤
1975 must have been a more interesting time, not without its troubles, but more authentic and less insular. I like the fact that something like this could get in the charts.
Peter Skellern is still the best after all these years and still can't get enough of his wonderful songs, great lyrics and superb musicianship. Add in the fine arrangements, especially with the brass bands, and you have a unique mix of talent and style which will endure for many years yet. RIP Peter....
I hate to plead ignorant but I didn't even know Peter skellern passed on 😢 so saddening of the loss of such a great artist. R.I.P Peter, you are sadly missed 😓
Wonderful times the 70's, if you are in your 50's you will have seen a host of genres. Fantastic ballads from this gent, disco, glam, ska, punk, new romantic, heavy etc not necessarily in that order - the best times with an incredible range of fashion.
I've been looking for this this for the last five years. The only thing I could remember was the chorus, "Baby, hold on". So damned glad I finally found it.
Me too Keith, I remembered this song from when I was a kid, then I googled the few words I remembered. Listening to an old song is like bumping into an old friend!
The 70's Was very much a decade when the idiosyncratic could project there musical uniqueness into the public! And Peter Skellern was a prime example of that may he continue 2 RIP!! From Adrian Browne @1965.Com
I'm 51 . Liked new wave, punk & heavy metal but loved this when it came out. Strange but true. This is on a great cd called guilty pleasures with lots more good songs like this one. Also, am I the only person who thinks that Peter skellern & Joe Jackson were separated at birth ?
what happened to this amazing singer songwriter. He is unique in is gender. What a complete musician, amazing arrangements ......I have been listening to most of his songs trough tube recently....I just can't get enough of hi extraordinary music....
As a musician, I think Peter Skellern was totally unique. He brought in a British- Yorkshire sensibility to British Pop Music (especially in his use of the Yorkshire Collary Brass sound). I don't believe there is a comparison to him, in the history of British Pop Music.
Yes it is. Those soaring backing vocals don't quite do what one expects. Skellern's voice, though nice enough is not particularly versatile so he used lots of ornamentation to get round it.
I think he was a bit of a bridge crosser. A traditionalist who could adapt to the pop world with his ballads. Music was more diverse then. You never knew what would be in the charts. I also remember( Radio) Hold on to your Wellies!
I heard it on the radio a few times in 1975 (it was released in the US as a 45 on the Private Stock label, but only reached #106) without ever knowing who did it, though it always reminded me of the original, Fleetwood Mac version of "Sentimental Lady". Had to Google the lyrics to find it later.

I was a five year old in April 1975. Had my tonsils and adenoids extracted! And i loved that song for comfort coming home from hospital.
That is lovely, the idea of a 5 year old tuning in to a current pop song on the radio and using it for comfort and strength
A lovely man who wrote and sang beautifully constructed music. So sadly missed, bless him.
Well said my man.
I'm from Brazil and I was a teenager when I heard "you're a lady" for the first time. I never forgot the softness of this melody and the delicacy of the verses. Today, 50 years later, I still get emotional remembering my emotions at that time.
I feel your spirit Gloria Van Cooten AKA. Mum.
May you continue to RIP. ❤️🎶
RIP Peter, another talent lost. Great pop tune and superb harmonies.
Loved all his stuff, but this was my favourite.

I thank God for Peter, I loved his songs. He had such a gentle voice. God bless him I do love to hear his songs.
1975, I would've been 10/11, living in Dundee and loving this song and years later appreciating the brass and the whole emsemble in You're a Lady
Tried to find this for YEARS!! Beautiful, haunting song.
My all time favorite song. Brilliant. Makes sometimes stir deep inside. Ingenious music composition.
True gentleman...true talent..thank you Peter..RIP

Beautiful song,by a beautiful artist , once more Peter RIP
I remember this song was played often on Radio One over months Feb to March 1975.
Wonderful times the 70's, if you are in your 50's you will have seen a host of genres. Fantastic ballads from this gent, disco, glam, ska, punk, new romantic, heavy etc not necessarily in that order - the best times with an incredible range of fashion.
True.
Also novelty and TV themes. Basically anything could make the charts. Not true nowadays.
Musically, we really were spoiled for choice
Not forgetting rockabilly teds etc
I totally agree.

Same for me as well..
This song has one of the Best Song Production's I have EVER heard on a Pop Song.
It's also damn funky.
It's a real sexy song.
I am surprise it isn't covered by more music artists.
I love this tune.

I love this song and always come back to it every so often. I think Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels fame did a cover of this back in the day.
I'm 51 . Liked new wave, punk & heavy metal but loved this when it came out. Strange but true. This is on a great cd called guilty pleasures with lots more good songs like this one. Also, am I the only person who thinks that Peter skellern & Joe Jackson were separated at birth ?
Yes....you are.
This was actually played by John Peel.

Too bad this tune never cracked the Top 100 in the USA. Great song, IMO.

HAPPY MID 1970s MEMORIES
Very interesting vocal arrangement :)

OMG, a song covered by Cheryl Ladd...
Your Joking
Where does the time go?
I forgot who sang it.i got confused with Peter Gabriel.
Does sound a bit like Peter Gabriel now you mention it.
Six million man sample here.
Ah
Please tell me that's a made up name of the producer!! I thought the 60's were supposed to be swinging not the 70's.
