- If you are SERIOUS about landing big fish you NEED to CHECK YOUR LEADER REGULARLY! When I started doing this, as well as tying good knots and fighting fish correctly I started landing the big fish I had been losing. By eliminating any weak spots on your leader you maximize your chance for success. I also check all of my tippet knots and tags as well by putting them under tension before I ever make a cast. I'd rather break them myself than have a big fish do it!
Good idea I'm guilty of not checking mine often enough. I've been hearing how Adam's breaks down I didn't fish it long enough to see
I haven’t had any issues with the Adams but it sounds like plenty of people have. I had lots of problems with the Sempe which is why I switched to the Adams. I am lucky to get out fishing more than twice a month. My stuff sits longer than I’d like sometimes. I have to check because I can’t afford to lose any fish on my precious fishing days because I’m lazy.
@brooktoriverflyfishing we've been getting a ton of rain here in NC. Every chance I get to go fishing, the streams are blown out. I've tried all sorts of leaders, I have a drawer full of different materials. I was wanting a few things from troutbitten and ordered his new hiviz standard leader just to try. Honestly, it's the best one I've found. His lengths are perfect, and I can see it, unlike Chameleon and its so more versatile than the micro stuff i was using. I couldn't tell the micro stuff improved my catch rate either if anything it went down. Now I need to buy even more so I can make my own hi-vi leaders Lol
@@stringtwister7654 if you are looking for a versatile do it all leader that would be a good choice. I talked about they some in my “how to set up a euro Nymphing rod” video actually. I prefer flat mono for strictly Nymphing since I don’t like any knots in my guides but a tapered leader definitely gives you more options. Hi viz sounds nice, I haven’t tried that avenue yet. The white Adams shows up pretty well in most circumstances but I’m always looking for more options.
Folks have been reporting that ADAMS 4X degrades over time. Multiple report about quality issue out of the spool with 6 months old spool of unused leader. Keep and eye on it and report. Thanks for sharing some good practices. Been there and it's frustrating when it happens :)
Yeah I’ve been seeing the same thing. Honestly, that was my exact experience with Sempe which is why I switched to the Adams. I think it probably varies on a spool by spool basis but it is annoying for sure. The spool of Sempe I ordered was ok for the first trip. The second leader I tried to make a month later would not hold a blood knot no matter what I did. Haven’t used it since. I haven’t had any i issues with the Adams 4x so far and I used almost the whole spool. When this leader broke it was the slighter that snapped. My fishing days are too precious to me to lose fish because of a faulty leader.
@@brooktoriverflyfishing How often do you change your leader section (the ADAMS 4X) ?
@@stephanebogen5411 I test it before each trip and when it won’t hold a blood knot any more without breaking I swap it out for a new one. I have a leader wallet with 10 different leader configurations pre tied for different situations. I think I have three pre tied Adams leaders in there now. Some with sighter, some plain for use with markers, and some with tags.
@@brooktoriverflyfishing very organized :)
Very good reminders!
