    Hi, very interesting... but I had to find a converter to convert degrees fahrenheit to celsius each time you talk about T° 😅 If T° is an indicator, many other parameters come into play, such as the flow of the river, the drop or rise in air temperature, atmospheric pressure, weather, light, the moon, etc etc, and of course the mood of the Trout and the fisherman 🤫

    • @brooktoriverflyfishing
      @brooktoriverflyfishing Місяць тому

      Yes. For sure there are other factors. But for me, I start with the temperature. Low flows make some pockets too shallow for fish to hold safely and so on.

      Yeah I’ve been seeing the same thing. Honestly, that was my exact experience with Sempe which is why I switched to the Adams. I think it probably varies on a spool by spool basis but it is annoying for sure. The spool of Sempe I ordered was ok for the first trip. The second leader I tried to make a month later would not hold a blood knot no matter what I did. Haven’t used it since. I haven’t had any i issues with the Adams 4x so far and I used almost the whole spool. When this leader broke it was the slighter that snapped. Just found your channel. A euro nympher after my own heart. I've tried everything you've tried, starting with Dom' mono rig and came to the same conclusion- I love the Adams leader material. I like 3x and add a few feet of Cortland 4x sighter, then a stopper knot. Much less prone to tangling and wrapping around the rod tip than the Sempe. I also make use of small indicators with this rig. The new XS Oros Indies will hold up a 2.8 bead pretty well, and it is much less hassle than floating the sighter or even dry/dropper. I've found the oblong (not the round) pinch on indicators also cast quite well with a micro leader. Not as versatile as the Oros, as you can't adjust the depth, but even less splash than the Oros. You quote Dom at Troutbitten often. His motto of "do what works" fits well with this approach. Keep up the good work. You got a thumbs up from Cory at Old Dominion Trout Bum, which is high praise indeed.

      Thank you for watching and for the support. It sounds like we both like to experiment and try things for ourselves. I am always trying to up my game and try new things/techniques. I have listened to every single troutbitten podcast episode. Many of them up to 4 or 5 times. I love Dom's approach of "doing what works." I also have learned a ton from Cory at Old Dominion Trout Bum. I also love Devin Olsen's stuff and own all of his videos and book. There is so much to learn and every little nugget translates into more/bigger fish. Cory and I fish many of the same waters since we both live in Virginia. A few months ago he and I fished one of our favorite rivers a few weeks apart. We were literally catching the same fish, out of the same lies but on different bugs. I try very hard to be a versatile angler and I like the challenge of fishing new/different water. It keeps you sharp and on your game and you have to be ready for anything. I will throw on an indicator any time the situation dictates it and it is a very effective way to catch fish in certain water types. The Adams is currently my favorite leader material but I've been hearing good things about the new Umpqua stuff and want to try that out soon. I just got out yesterday for a whole day and landed 3 fish at 20" plus around 40 others. It will take me awhile to put together that video but it's going to be awesome. You don’t really want you sighter to be much thicker than your leader but this combination has worked great for me for quite awhile. I’ve also been hearing good things about the new Umpqua sighter but haven’t tried it yet. Ideally whatever slighter you pick will be something that you can see well with a diameter that is similar to or slightly less than your leader diameter. If your sighter is a lot thicker than your leader you will be able to see it more easily but it won’t cast well due to a reverse taper.

    Looking fwd to your new video. Let me know if you try new leader material. I hope using the fly line will work out for me but once you use a single diameter nylon as leader and realize the superiority, it puts the bar really high for any alternative. Maybe just long enough for my skin to heal 😂. I looked at Adams on Devin’s site yesterday. I know you are using 4X. Have you tried higher diameter like the 3X or 2X?

      Haha. It’s like someone is reading my mind. You have had many of the exact same thoughts and problems that I have and even tried the same solutions. I have used the 4x and the 4.5x. I like the 4x better. It didn’t curl at all like the 4.5 did and I throw/strip jig streamers on it so if it’s too thin it’s hard to grab. Thanks for watching and if you have any other Nymphing buddies feel free to share my stuff with them.

    Superb tutorial - Really great info ! I have been doing Euro nymph for 3 seasons now and all the learning steps you described, I went through them :). I have tried SEMPE 16, in green. It's good but I have experienced similar issues as you described. I tried the Cortland tapered leader formula (Avid Max video) and it works fine but frankly, less knots is what I need, especially as I do only nymphing. Lately, I have settled using a ceramic coated Nylon 2X for leader (it's basically a tree tone indicator soldarini in 2X that I never used as indicator. Color is not super visible so I repurposed it as leader and it works really well). Using 40ft is fine and it's the perfect diameter for me but I have experienced lots of cuts on my fingers due to the line. Therefore, I'll try to use in my hand my Euro fly line by shortening my 2X leader to 13ft (plus 4 ft color + 5 feet tippet). I have an 11 ft rod. As a Euro line, I recently got the Cortland nylon line at 0.017" It's smaller than the other Euro line and I do not do competition so I am OK. It's an interesting alternative as it does not sag at all and it's gentle on my dry finger skin ;). Finally, tippet material and knots.....like you the 16/20 is one of my favorite. For tippet, I am using more and more Nylon instead of Fluorocarbon. It works great and I really like the elasticity Nylon procures over Fluoro. I have not noticed any issue related to Nylon being "more visible". Unless you fish super clear tail water, I don't think it's a problem. I don't buy cheap stuff, Frog hair is my favorite brand. Finally, I have been experiencing stop knots instead of tippet ring. This works really great ! It is super fast to connect any tippet material and I am finding myself relying less and less on tippet rings. The connection is straight and it allows such a perfect drift.

      Thanks man. I appreciate it. My goal was to make a comprehensive tutorial for people who were just getting into it. Sounds like you have done enough of it to experiment and find what you like. That’s great! I have had similar issues with the 4x adams making small cuts in my hand. I thought I was the only one! It’s slightly annoying and I have tried fishing a shorter leader with a euro line but I don’t like my drifts as much that way. I honestly just deal with it. I head that umpqua has some new mono and sighter out that’s supposed to be really good but I haven’t tried it yet. And yes, I hate knots in my guides so I fish a flat leader most of the time. I’m getting ready to put out another video before too long. Check it out if you get the chance. Tight lines man!

    Back in the early 60's and old fly fisherman gave me this advice. Always rub the ferrule on the side of your nose before connecting, He explained there are enough natural oils there to help lubricate the connection. Just a habit to get into.

      Thanks Richard! That's where we used them too. Those brand new 3D targets are no joke to get carbon arrows out of. And that was 25 years ago with a slow, old bow. I can't imagine how hard it is these days with the ultra-fast bows!

    Seriously good idea! I've seen the tissue paper trick work, but using an arrow holder grip is just smart..I would say don't twist too hard starting out as it could seriously torque the rod...I am into archery too, these arrow holder grips really are made for that grip that you can't get any else!
