  • Josh JHS Made A Modular Klon Centaur-alike… Can Dan Do The Same?
Welcome to the show! And very possibly the last Klon show we do. For a while anyway. Because the very, very, very clever people at JHS Pedals recently launched the Notaklön, a Centaur-type OD pedal in kit form. Genius idea, genius marketing.
The easy thing would have been to buy one and compare it to Mick’s Klon. But. But but but but but… this is That Pedal Show and we like to be a little more, erm, enquiring. Thusly, Dan has attempted to deconstruct a Klon circuit, using other pedals to try to explain what’s going on.
Can we do it? Why would we do it? Welcome to That Pedal Show.
    Enjoy the episode!

Love that we’re seeing more humbuckers on the show. Would love an episode that explores the differences between humbuckers and single coils when it comes to modulation and wet effects. In the past you’ve mentioned that you tend to get more out of certain effects with single coils. Interested in why this is the case and what we can do to get the most out of these effects when using humbuckers.

Fascinating. Thanks guys. Notaklön was definitely marketing genius, but even more than that product development genius. Lot's of people want to build pedals but most are turned off by soldering. Such a simple solution to that problem.

I would add that it totally fits the Zeitgeist. The pandemic made many people spend more time on their hobbies, making DIY bloom. Now taking this to the next level by adding the IKEA simplicity and making it accessible for almost anyone and doing some great marketing really took it to the next level.

What I bring away from this is never mind your special magic unicorn diodes, what seems to make the Klon special is it’s very clever design, as you’ve cleverly shown, visually as well as audibly, with the today’s pedal set up. The careful tweaking of parameters that was needed to get the right sound, made relatively easily by having the knobs and sliders to hand in this example, must have been so much more trickier with the arrangement and rearrangement of components in the R & D of the original pedal. Another great show!

I think this one demonstrates something really important about the Klon: for all the secret diodes and forum threads and resale price-gougers, the most important thing by FAR about the Klon is the way it's VOICED. Getting a pedal to stay open on top, while also compressing and thickening out the pick attack, while also pushing the mids, while also keeping the lower mids clear enough not to flub out ... that's Demiurge-tier stuff

I love these "Pedal for every element of a pedal" type videos. Very informative of how things work. It'd be crazy to see this done with a Univibe

This is the ONLY way to make a Klon being more expensive than the original!😂😂😂 but I really like this educational way to approach to the effects and the relative sound that came out of it! Very, very interesting! Well done, guys, you always rulez!❤

Thank you guys so much for this demonstration! I was going to buy a vintage Klon, but it looks as if I can get that sound for much cheaper with a dozen pedals and accessories....

I am finishing up a $$$ stereo for a show. Have a Cosecant N2 USB dac hooked to my MacBook Pro and that into a hellish tube amp and speakers. The sound is incredible!!! So much so that Barley (brown & tan Cocker Spaniel) is howling :)
The two MIT engineers don't get enough merits for their work on the Klon!
    Great show thanks mates!

I want a hard clipping distorsion with three volumes; one for clean bass, one for full clean and one for distorsion. Then the normal tone control AND a parametric eq only for the distorsion signal. A distorsion control and a master volyme. That's nine knobs😂😂😂. And of course an on/off switch.
    And peace on earth.

Dan really knows his stuff with pedals, never ceases to amaze me! This was interesting and through this I know a lot more about how a Klon works and why it is such a great pedal! Mick, what number is your Klon? I think Tomo Fujita's, that he bought in the 90's is #12,,,crazy! anyway thanks guys! Have a great weekend!

I didn’t get the Centaur circuit for a long time. Though it was dull. But in the past year I’ve taken a Tumnus and cranked the gain anywhere between 3:00 and full up (got that from Josh Scott). And I love it. It’s got more than enough gain and it cuts through so very well when I play in a band situation which typically consists of drums, bass, acoustic guitar, keys and multiple vocalists these days.

Brilliant episode. Love it when Dan explains things... also always thought EQ pedals were kinda overlooked when trying to emulate tones, seems like a programmable EQ would give a player an excellent range of tonal options instead of a row of boosts and overdrives. That said, bought two Notaklön kits and eagerly awaiting delivery. Rarely make such spontaneous purchases, especially given the shipping costs but really couldn’t miss out this time...

I’ve recently discovered that my “second overdrive” pedal should have just been an eq with a slight level boost pushing my favourite overdrive pedal. Could have saved me time and $$ if I’d put the cork sniffery aside and just bought a ge7 🤷😂

The guy from JHS made a brilliant product and did brilliant marketing. He deserves every penny he makes from his pedal. I've never had much desire for a Klon but I really liked how his pedal sounded on some demos I watched. Not sure if they're sold out still but I'll be looking into getting one.

Very interesting guys, I love these videos - though I imagine there is quite a bit of work which goes into them!
I think it would be great to see a Boss BD-2 deconstructed like this as I believe it is an interesting circuit too.
