- One of my favourite so far from season 3 as we unpack how silly it all is, and how change can truly come. My review.

I love the ending to this episode so much - because honestly, when we first realise that Tahani and Jason got married, did ANYONE actually think "But what about Larry?" We all forgot about him, too. Poor Larry.
I mean he's only 6 foot 4, barely has an 8 pack and a forgettable face.
Poor Larry. He won't overcome his insecurities that soon
"Because nothing you do matters, the only thing that matters is what you do."
Not many reaction channels take so much time and thought to actually pull apart, analyse and critique the themes of the show like yours does, keep it up!
This show especially has so much depth to it and is so rewarding to actually pull apart and discuss. Plus its fun seeing you pick up on hints and themes and character arcs ahead of the actual reveals, whether or not you are correct in your predictions!
What's marvelous is that Eleanor first commented about Chidi being "surprisingly jacked" back in season 1, when she was talking to "Vicky" about her reasons for liking him. And here we are, two seasons later, and they prove it to us. 😄🤣🤩
There's another point in the series where they explain why he's so fit: he read that exercise is a good way to deal with stress, and since Chidi is always stressed, he basically never stops exercising...
With most things in life, if only given two options it's worth questioning whether that binary really exists.
Your talk of hopelessness and change, and the way human societies make us always think that "the way things are" is just natural and the way they have always been reminded me of a famous Ursula K Leguin quote. I couldn't remember it exactly, so I looked it up. She said:
"We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable - but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words."
One of my favorite episodes of the series, and one of my favorite scenes of the whole show is Chidi snapping because of the dot over the "i".
Same
You hate double negatives, well, I couldn't fail to disagree with you less.
Get out.
Thanks for another awesome, thoughtful reaction.
I've watched this show probably 5 or 6 times at this point, and it's just such a masterclass in episodic writing. The way it moves and transforms at breakneck speed without detaching us from the character arcs is remarkable, especially considering that a huge chunk of plot is the characters constantly being reset to pilot. When you get to the end, it's one that absolutely benefits from a post-finale retrospective on the entire series arc - if it interests you, would love to see that video. :)
Jeremy Bearimy is actually brilliant. It's just so simple that it seems stupid. In Dance Dance Resolution Chidi referenced Nietzsche's Eternal Recurrence. Jeremy Bearimy returns to that idea with a bit of explanation that is much needed to deal with the reality of idiots (especially those in power in the show and real life) making the same stupid mistakes over and over again. Chidi also quotes Nietzsche in this episode with his "God is dead" speech. One of my favorite episodes. And a great reaction.
Chidi’s breakdown over the ‘I’ made perfect sense to me.
As an older person (Gen X) who is child-free by choice, I will never understand my fellow olds who don’t want life to be easier for the following generations! What’s the point of all that we go through except to learn how to make it better for others? I’m an atheist, so my morality has never been guided by the concept of what happens after. I simply believe that if we can help ease others’ pain, isn’t that the right thing to do?
Which is why I like listening to people of a philosophical bent who are younger than I. It can be hard to get truly fresh ideas from those who aren’t living with all the new stressors that life has thrown at those who are going to try to keep civilisation alive.
Wonderful reaction
I love your analysis. I also just love your reaction to the show, especially the fact that you're Jason. As someone who has seen the show I'm enjoying seeing your journey. Also the only UA-camr I'm a member of. I'd never dare post spoilers but I actually can't want to see you react and also analyse future episodes.
I always appreciate your discussions & dissections.
I needed this, to get through the next leg of my work shift
Ooft, I wish you a swift and easy next leg. Hope this helps! 😄
I am of the opinion that the system is working exactly as intended. It was never meant to help anyone but the elite
I've just listened to The Good Place - The Podcast about this episode. There were 2 deleted scenes that sounded so funny. One was after Eleanor talks to Chidi after his lecture and she says "leave that chilli, weirdo" he puts his hands into the chilli pot, grabs a handful and puts it in his pocket.
The other cut scene is after Eleanor gives Fred back the drawing, his teenage daughter comes down stairs and Fred introduces her as Patricia. Eleanor says from the drawing, she thought she was younger, but the girl just says she's a bad artist. It makes more sense when Eleanor later refers to his "really untalented daughter" that she's not criticising a small child.
Also, Fred Booth's name was originally Fred Tooth, it was a stupid ongoing joke in the writers room.
I don't think Jason has been freed by this or any experience. Jason is just a blank slate (much like children are) that is constantly being influenced by the environment that he's in. He doesn't really question or think too deep, he's just goes along with the morality of whichever community he is currently enmeshed in.
It was a good ramble 👍
Poor Chidi! His whole life has been a search for meaning, and he's found there isn't any. This is a real "you are what you do in the dark" episode.
And Chidi apparently terrorizes drug dealers, takes his shirt off under sprinklers and makes peep chilli.
Yeah, philosophy as a field of study works in part because there are no definitive answers to many of life's questions, but once you know your endgame, what's there to ask? A fascinating conundrum that gave us the chili song.
July is summer, but the nights are drawing in. I don't know why but that makes it better
Thank you for another great reaction, I always look forward to these videos.
One of my favorite episodes. Again, thanks for the reaction and thoughtful analysis.
This is one of my favourite episodes, I love chaotic Chidi. 😅I feel bad for him, but I love the chaos of the chili 🤣
I've worked with a lot of wealthy people (like Tahani), especially those that inherited wealth, and it's shocking how so many of them feel ineffectual because compared to *their peers* they don't have a lot of money, so what "little" they have ($100-200 million), couldn't *possibly* make a difference in anything. I've seen these clients gobsmacked that you can buy a house for less than a million dollars because "everyone knows" that houses cost, at least, $10 million. The bubbles they live in are so disconnected from reality and almost everyone who manages their lives (accountants, lawyers, etc.) work really hard to *ensure* they stay disconnected, so that they can continue to vastly overcharge their golden geese for everything.
Another great reaction. Keep up the awesome content my guy!
I always enjoy your reaction to this show, you really dwell into topics that I hadn't really considered.
Side note, hope you someday react to the Derry Girls, now THAT would be interesting.
I actually have a character who believes in nihilism, and he sees it as freeing. Because if nothing matters, then everything matters equally. When life has no meaning, it's impossible to waste your life. And if everything you do will one fay be forgotten, then there's no real consequences in the long run
oh what luck!!! i look forward to your good place reactions so much. chidi in this episode was my fav that actor is so talented lol edit: i forgot to say that i really like your analysis not just your reactions, because i love how in sync you are with the show and you have such good discussions about it
Re improving things in society
I grew up protestant Christian in the American South. I was surrounded and raised by people who quite literally believed that improvement on a societal level was evil or selfish in some way and we deserved the bad system, and it is natural, and the world is going to end soon anyway
my only hang up on the "knowing about the after life means you cannot get into the good place" is that that people who truly believe in the afterlife would also run into this problem.
Knowing and believing are two very different things.
Back in the first season, Eleanor was able to earn points despite knowing about the system because she had decided not to try.
Of course, this was the bad place, so we need to be a little suspicious, but it seems nostalgic of what they said about points has been shown to be true.
So, if they do something after deciding they can’t get points for it, possibly it could work the same.
Shirtless Chidi in the thumbnail is fire
"sir, you can't shop here without a shirt." "Really?!"
No, not really. We're Australians. We really don't care.
The voting in the US and the UK suck.
We are lucky in Australia to have preferential voting. This means that you can vote for who you want to and still ensure that by voting for a third party that you don’t sacrifice your vote and help the major party on the other side.
This has improved minor parties and independents significantly so that 18/151 of the lower house are minor parties or independents and the senate 19/76
love this episode! especially eleanor still deciding to be good and help, even if she doesn’t Want to want it.
also you mentioned Australian’s and oh wow if you have not seen it i highly recommend Deadloch! I think you’d really enjoy it, it’s so fun!
Apparently the actor playing Chidi was auditioning for Marvel at the time, which is why he was so jacked.
4:10 but June is pride month 😢
I love your analysis as always. please dont worry about rambling. For me at keast, those are the best bit of your reaction.
Waiting for the bigger bigots to die out is the "bring the system down by not voting" of progressiveness, and doesn't explain who the people fighting for our rights in past decades were, we're just congratulating ourselves on passively being the most progressive we can possibly be - in a time when it's arguably the easiest to be that person.
I will not hear this June slander.
He HATES pride month
Uhhhhh I know this is probably a joke but it's the second comment about it so just to clarify 😂 June and July stress me because I always forget which is which and I seem to attract friends that only have birthdays in either of them. Brother's bday is July so I made that 'the preferable one' arbitrarily at an early age. It's a stressful couple months for THAT reason 😂 I do not hate Pride month.
@@TylerAlexander HA YEAH It was a joke, don't worry about it.
I thought of this comment when you first said you like july more than june but forgot until you started talking about all the issues in the world and mentioned homophobia, so I know you don't.
(Very good reactions btw! I catch them as soon as I notice they've released every time!)
4:18 Why are you homophobic? /j
