Hey! I just caught your Buffy First, Middle, Last video this weekend and I've been catching up on your full series reactions. Welcome to season 3. I love that you can tell the shift in the way they are telling the story and filming things because it really is a step up for the series. Generally speaking, season 3 is considered one of the best of the series, though interestingly all of most fans favorite episodes appear in other seasons. But there is so much to love about season 3 and the way it is very well crafted. I really appreciate your deep analysis and understanding of the filmmaking, the themes, and the larger picture. It's really impressive for someone who's watching the show for the first time.

The ironic thing to your theory and/or authenticity of the movie/true story of Moses is that it dose not have a happy ending like the movie portrays. Far from it! At the last second of this film the true ending is that while Moses was retrieving the Ten Commandments, there was a mutiny going on with the Hebrews/Jews. Not to mention the true siblings of Moses were racist and did not approve of Moses wife who was actually black. There is a lot more to the Book of Exodus than just that little story.

To begin with, Giles should have stood up to the Watcher’s council. They’re the ones who decided to keep the Slayer secret, even when the Slayer is a minor and her calling should have been explained and talked about with the parents. Buffy made the choice, Joyce doesn’t understand and was left out of what was going on. Giles risking Buffy and the gang. The enough blame to go around. Fortunately, this is only a TV show, but these things do happen in the real world. Every person is not only responsible for their thought and actions, but we need to be certain not to leave a trail of bodies behind us.

Just found your DW reactions, so I'm dropping my read on this episode that I've left on previous reactions. For me, 73 Yards is an episode that is heavy on theme and metaphor to almost a Kafka-esque degree, and it pays off fantastically if you're tuned into that sort of thing; if you're not, however, you're going to come away from it frustrated and confused over its lack of firm resolution to many of the mysteries threaded throughout. My personal read on it is this is an exploration of Ruby's trauma over being raised as a foundling and the uncertainty regarding her origin, and how this has manifested as a lingering fear of abandonment and isolation. The "always distant" woman haunting Ruby is a physical representation of this, an extension of Ruby's soul and her own fear of driving others away - a fear that in a sense becomes self-fulfilling as we eventually see during the montage with Ruby being unable to form meaningful relationships due to the constant distracting presence of her own shadow self (a visual metaphor for people with abandonment trauma being their own worst enemy.) This is the curse that is cast upon Ruby for desecrating the fairy circle; she becomes trapped within a world where her deepest fear takes on a tangible, spectral form; a perfect distillation of all that Ruby dreads. This is why/how the woman sends people running in terror - they run because that's what Ruby is afraid of happening. When Ruby finds out about Roger ap Gwilliam aka "Mad Jack", she suddenly derives a purpose from this curse, believing that it is her responsibility - destiny, even - to prevent a future in which Gwilliam brings about a nuclear Armageddon. In dedicating herself to this mission, Ruby takes her own suffering and weaponises it against what is presumed to be the creature who she set free by reading the scrolls. Whether or not Gwilliam was actually Mad Jack (or vice-versa) or not is left ambiguous, but you could definitely interpret Ruby's actions as her rectifying in some sense the damage she caused at the start of the episode. It's this one act of thwarting Mad Jack, then, that later ensures Ruby is granted the chance to free herself from the spell. Upon her death, Ruby is sent back to the moment of her and the Doctor's arrival in Wales only this time not as a dark amalgamation of her fears meant to eternally follow, but as a bringer of hope and salvation. Ruby sends a final message to herself, a warning of the fairy circle. "Don't step." The circle is avoided, and so is the curse. And so the episode is closed out. It's masterfully done. I will say, it takes a number of watches to fully grasp what is actually going on (it took me about 3 or 4 viewings for it to finally click) but once it does, oh boy is it worth it.

I always saw this episode as Ruby's abandonment fears manifested. Although it was a great episode, I don't feel like we knew Ruby well enough to really feel for her during this. However, since this episode aired, I have been wondering if Mad Jack is actually her dad. Hopefully we will get some answers one day

The weird thing about the fish fingers and custard thing was it was Matt's Doctor figuring out what this new Doctor liked and disliked so having ncuti saying it's his favourite just ignores the entire point of that whole 11th Doctor intro completely.

You are absolutely right about Roger AP William. The problem with these populist politicians is people will believe them when they say they support the working class and that they're being oppressed by immigrants, so people will vote in these fascists ready to make everyone's lives a whole lot worse. (Why we need strong left wing alternatives and not mid-tier centrists) However I don't really like this episode because, like you said, it doesn't really delve into the reality of the horror Ruby is going to. It had the potential to be Ruby's Heaven Sent almost but just rushed it. Roger AP William also could have been explored a lot more.

Very enjoyable reaction. However, at that point we had no idea Angel would come back - and with Joss Whedon there never is any guarantee. So I at least felt not an ounce of satisfaction when Buffy had to kill him, all I felt was Buffy's heartbreak. At the end, she might have truly become the Slayer, as you point out, but she also felt completely alone and didn't think she could turn to her support network. So I don't really agree with your elation over the way the episode ended, but of course, you have foreknowledge of where things would go. Anyway, one of the best season finales ever following what's probably my favourite season of Buffy. No other Big Bad has ever been so personal for her and her journey imho.

Great analysis and observations @tyleralexander. It’s quite chilling to hear that the UK is facing some of the same challenges as we are here in the USA. You could have been describing our current political system with the whole idea of people getting drawn in by a false “strongman” and sense of isolation and nationalism. I felt the same about this episode. A lot to like, but the resolution didn’t quite feel enough. Perhaps that was the point? Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I'm enjoying reactions to this episode. People seem to focus on different things, and it gives a very particular perspective. A few days ago someone took this to be a symbolic representation of loneliness and abandoment issues in someone who's adopted, and it was quite a good interpretation. I did like this episode. I love the first act with that horror movie vibe, and the unsettling feeling all throughout. The political elements are very interesting. We currently have a mad man as a president in my country, and I get what you mean.

  • @neils123
    @neils123 3 дні тому

I'm not going to get into the political talk but suffice it to say I'm of the same mind as you, though I'm from the US so the names are a little different. As to the episode itself, I felt the same way - I really loved the beginning, and the middle, thought it handled the tension and suspense very well, but then it really fell apart at the end. And the reason was because, as you pointed out, it was a paradox. It was entirely circular, with no causality at all. And I hate that, because I feel like that's not supposed to happen in Doctor Who. I'm not an expert, I really never liked or got into classic Who, but I've seen every episode of new Who (2005+), and the one thing we never see is a true time loop. At some point, every apparent loop has an entry and an exit point, and usually it's up to the doctor and/or their companion to find it - to become or otherwise trigger something. There's always some aspect of causality to the loop in question. But here, there is no cause. There is no real entry or exit point. Just... somehow Ruby found herself in a loop that she was able to paradoxically warn her younger self not to enter. We don't know how she got into it in the first place, nor how older Ruby was able to be seen by younger Ruby - it just doesn't make any sense. And so from that perspective, all the audience goodwill gained from the early parts of the episode is squandered, and it definitely brings the episode down overall. Disappointing, given how great the first half was.

Oh that's tricky. On the one hand, I do quite like it as a fairytale resolution, and it's the kind of mystery resolution that is worse for being left out, but on the other, how on earth would you write and film it without it also seeming like a copout that requires a heck of a lot more characterisation from Mad Jack as a capricious not-politician entity

On your rant about knowledge and the bible, when I read the bible the first time I assumed it was fiction because it's the only way I could make any sense of it. How could anyone pre AI make a boat large enough to house 2 of EVERY animal sturdy enough to not break but light enough to not sink? What did they eat? How were they stored without killing/eating eachother? What about inbreeding? What about the aquatic species? My answer was early quantum physics given by time travellers or aliens to keep them all separate. What else but fiction could celebrate slavery, misogyny, infanticide, incest and genocide? A few stories in particular stayed with me a while, according to the book 2 Angels came down to a village and told all of the men that they MUST sleep with the daughters of the leader, they were given to them and in the square every man had their way with the girls while they were told not to cry. I don't believe for a moment that anyone could be okay with that. Another says a family was warned that their town was going to be destroyed and they had to leave immediately, as they were leaving the mother looked back to the only place she had known and was turned into salt for looking, the daughters was told by "god" to drug their father and bare him a child each, and they did. I still don't believe that anyone could take it as fact, with spontaneous combustion, sticks that can part seas, someone getting lost for 40 years without passing another person, talking animals, family tree confusion, contradictory stories which are all "the truth", evolutionary misconceptions, and so many rewrites the new bible barely resembles the old ones. (This got out of hand quick)

I don't think God's existence in this story can be boiled down to simply "a motivator." He certainly acts as that, but he is meant to stand as a call to moral virtue, which most if not all religions have to a greater or lesser degree. Those without religion are probably content just living good by their neighbors and working against injustice when they can. There is absolutely nothing wrong or dishonorable about that life, to be clear, but religion often demands a higher level of responsibility, not just to help others but to live for others and sacrifice your own happiness so others can achieve theirs. That's what Moses is doing. He desperately wants to live peacefully with his old brother, but his moral duty means he must forgo that life for the greater good. It's the true meaning of sacrifice.

I loved your discussion on identity in this episode, it helped me see it in a new light. The political and institutional themes and the role they play in adulthood are a big part of this season, and in this episode, the show makes the mission statement that if you don't assert your identity - something that is more difficult to do the more you isolate yourself from the positive influence of other people - then you easily become lost in a potentially corrupt and malevolent institution.

My take on the Romani curse: Angel is a hybrid of a pure human/pure soul in a vampire. Liam, his human self, wasn't a "great" human, and Angelus had no humanity, according to the Judge. Therefore, no, the curse wasn't fair. It didn't turn him back to Liam. It turned him into "other," which is Angel.

Notice with the theme of "who are you," Lilly/Chanterelle/Sunshine girl, the first human name she takes is "Anne." Just as when Buffy says "I'm Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" is her accepting who she is, L-C-S taking the name Anne, is her accepting that she is a human, living in the human world instead of the fantasy worlds she had constructed for herself. And sorry to break it to some people, but Lilly is not a human name, it is a flower.

At the end of S2, she had been accused of murder, expelled from high school, had to murder her boyfriend, and finally, been kicked out of her home by an inebriated mother. She might indeed need some time to decompress. She is trying to deny who she is, but by the end of the episode we have Buffy back into full Slayer goodness.

While the convo with Joyce is definitely an allegory (is this the right word? Analogy maybe?) for coming out, it's not a great one tbh, because Joyce's reaction to this, while not being great, is actually kind of understandable

Do you have educational background in psychology? And I agree with the clarification. Living in today’s WOKE society, everything needs clarification.

I loved your points in relation to Joyce blaming Giles. As an adult in my mid-40's now, my perspective has really changed since this first aired. Also I'm less inclined to always agree with the narrator's POV. I feel like as viewers, we are very unfair to Joyce and her choices, because I doubt most adults would repsond the way we expect Joyce too. I also think how Joyce went three years of her life being in way more danger than she could've ever imagined.

the school scene is a single shot. it's shot that way to show an interconnectedness and socialisation that juxtaposes buffy's situation

It seems to me that the idea was Oz was supposed to be bisexual or gay . Basically he hooked up with his cousin and got “converted”

23:05 23:17 That's totally false. Joyce said once "don't bother coming back." To most kids that statement would be completely meaningless. Sure, it's hurtful and having a fight is always hurtful, but Joyce never kicked Buffy out of the house and I'm pretty sure Buffy knows that. She's just using a slip of the tongue to justify running away, which is Buffy's response to what happened. But Joyce never made their home inhospitable to Buffy, although it's understandable if Buffy felt that way after her mom finding out.

You start praising the long tracking one shot, and I'm like "oh I didn't realize Joss directed this episode." But I should have known since I knew the "grrrl with a scythe/axe thing in a kickass pose for a title sequence" pose was in this one at the end. "Maybe this guy is good." As he describes the plot of the episode of aging quickly and sucking your soul out.
