    3/32 tig filler rod is stiff enough. The guage keeps you from drilling and comes in multiple flavors. I'm using stainless.

    Haha. Andrew gifted me two older ARRL books, one was for Antenna Design, both are thick books. He is well known here for making great antennas. Had a good chat with him, a top bloke!👍🤠
    P.S... I'm gonna have a look to see if that design is in there. Lol

    Great video and has me thinking to make a HT portable dipole. Pro tip, when using soft copper wire like stripped romex, before you cut and shape the wire, use a handheld power drill motor and spin a twist into the length of wire. Put one end of the wire in a vise, the other in the drill chuck. Give it a handful of turns and It will remove the kinks and add some stiffness to the wire. (assuming that you want stiff wire).

    I uses this fitting to make a 2m/70cm dipole. I used banana plugs to hold the wires then put them into the fitting. I used an antenna analyzer to trim them to the point where the SWR is very low. I did the 2m first, then added the wire for 70cm. That threw the 2m off until I got the 70cm properly trimmed. They are mounted on a frame of 1/2" pvc. Not terribly pretty but works quite well. I used old stranded speaker wire.

    Hey Chuck KK6USY. Great video! A quick note though - it's crucial to adress the balance in a dipole. The jacket of the coax acts as ground so if you add a balun, the second element of the dipole also becomes radiant, making it a true dipole instead of an extended 1/4 vertical with a tiger tail. Tiger tails work great compared to the normal ground plane on an HT (your face!) but a balanced dipole is heaps better still. Always great seeing creativity in HT land / levels the field with all the custom antennas for HF. Thank you! 73, SA6HAM.

    Isn't the gap too much with this BNC-connector? I guess its 12-15mm gap, but should be as small as possible. What effect has the larger (than necessary) gap?

    I just bought my first beginner ham gear: a GT-5R and a Signal Stuff Dual Band 2 m / 70cm (19" long) antenna. I live near Pearl Harbor. I've barely heard a squeak from anyone on ham, GMRS, or FRS frequencies. Seriously disappointed so far.
    Regarding your video (sorry if I'm being SUPER ignorant), you started out cutting two 6-1/2 inch pieces of 14 gauge wire. How did you end up with wire that looked like a couple feet long?
    Nice chilled style. Thanks!

    • @KK6USYHamRadioAdventures
      @KK6USYHamRadioAdventures  Рік тому +2

      Tana, the longer antenna ends were for 2m , the 6.6" elements were for 70cm sorry I probably wasn't real clear on that. As for hearing traffic near Pearl Harbor I do know there are a few nets that you should be able to hear easily. I have a friend Todd that lives near PH and he runs a couple of the nets. If you want to email me , I''m good on QRZ I can find out a list from Todd and they are very welcoming on his net, I joined in on a vacation last year. Also to help get stronger signals you might try a roll up Dipole from Dr. Ed Fong. edsantennas.weebly.com/
