I find funny it how a non-violent offender on to heroin gets 13 years instead of treatment for her addiction, but a rapist gets three months because he "has a bright future." That's the state of our prison system. It's repulsive.

    • @summerreneluster
      @summerreneluster 7 років тому +11

      Abi Wilson
The issue is not lesser sentences for drug offenders, the issue is harsher and more equitable sentences for more severe crimes. It's also important to remember it's most likely not her first offense. It's also important to remember it's not a victimless crime, though it may seem so. Drug addicts keep drug dealers in business, in our own neighborhoods, thus expanding the problem, while often times introducing substances to others. Would you want her out on the streets with your kids? I decidedly do not.

I'm not sure why this is viewed as an either / or scenario. Of course if we had to choose between a violent rapist and a drug addict, we'd prefer the drug addict be the one of the two who is set free. But, she shouldn't be set free and neither should the rapist. Both should be incarcerated for a fair and equitable amount of time proportionate to the crime committed. There are programs available to inmates while incarcerated designed to help them cope with their addiction upon release and maintain sobriety, often times reducing sentences for their participation. For instance the WELLS program in Illinois will deduct six months off of a sentence for satisfactory completion. Could there be better, more comprehensive programs to better equip inmates? Absolutely, everything can be improved, can't it? But, what are you and I doing to actually improve them, while idling time away in the comments section of UA-cam? And if she truly doesn't have the tools, skills, or willpower to resist the substance that's taken her down such a dark path, she has no business as a free, autonomous member of society when she's such a loose cannon, so very ill-equipped for life, and with such a startling lack of control over her own actions and choices.

Theresa Mischeski Yes rehab. Like in Europe.
But I see another reason to keep so many prisoners in usa. Its the fear of punishment. Americas population is not disciplined by moral standards or reason. But by fear. They use the fear to keep everybody within the limits.

I too am an addict that went to prison. They didn't have rehabilitation, i created my own. I wanted freedom from the bondage of drugs or anything that i was powerless over the outcome. I had a me problem that needed to change. I have been out now for 30 months and started my own business. I washed windows and headlights at truck stops, i cut trees, picked up dog 💩, and cut grass. I worked as hard doing the right things, and harder, than i did seeking to do the wrong things to get drugs. I spent 1000.00 to start my company and in 30 months i made almost 200k. It's my life and i fight for it everyday to be the best day possible. Rehab amd recovey do happen we just need to love ourselves first. This is my story of LIFE OUTSIDE BARS!!!! This woman's story breaks my heart. I could have been her. Drs need to be held more accountable for prescribing these addictive drugs to people then cutting them off. Withdrawal is the most painful thing that you can imagine. Would they put a cancer patient in jail for seeking out drugs to ease their pain? It's the same thing. It's unfortunate that this woman didn't seek medical attention for her addiction.

The misery lies in your system. If you want to change it you have to change many things at the same time.
In my country there are less than 0.07 percent of citizens in jail. Our cops shoot ca. 80 bullets a year, all cops together. (82 million citizens total) And it is perfectly safe on the streets. We got a very low rate of car accidents but no tempo limits on highways. Prostitution is a legal taxpaying profession. Healthcare for everyone on highest standard. A woman can marry a women to found a family with 2 'mothers'. Thats happen in the 4th biggest economy in the world. So you see it is possible to make a better world.CC

the pootis flue >what about all those Jews this peaceful country killed<
Well we are NOT talking about our history now. But if you insist I can tell you more about killing by my ancestors. If you like to hear this ...
For example. You know the conquest of gaul (France) and later of britain (GB) by the roman empire? Unlike the british and unlike the gauls my ancestors defeated the romans successfully. By butchering every single one of them who came into their territory uninvited. They killed all of 3 invading roman armies. The superiour military at this time. Thousands of thousands roman troups. Germanians killed all of them except a hand full of survivors who should report in the city rome about what they saw. But in 1527 my ancestors invaded the city rome itself and show them what killing really looks like. They butchered everyone and everything they found. After the germanians leave rome there was not even remaining dogs, not even rats ... nothing. Germanians had always an accurate understanding about the meaning of the word 'rage'.
In the newer history my ancestors fought 2 world wars in a row. In other words: 2 wars against the rest of whole world. In the World War 1 my ancestors killed 10 millions; 20 millions wounded. Because of that in 1918 my country was completely destroyed by the British Empire. (Which started to fall apart after this war) At the same time in germany not a single brick was solid and intact. Everything was burned to dust. In the 'Treaty of Versailles' my country was narrowed down with a very strong corset. To make sure that it will never kill again. My country had to accept significant territory lost, reparations of an unpayable amount and economic restrictions. And many other things to assure a peaceful germany.
Well 21 years after 1918 germany had become the strongest military power ever seen at this time. It started the next war against the whole world. In result 65 millions killed. 6 Millions of them in 'killing factories' on an industrial scale. They even killed people's in aim to earn 'raw material' like hair, skin, fat, gold and so on. It turned out that germans are also good in counting. At this time it needs the whole power of the United States of America + Soviet Union + the remaining British Empire to strike germany down. 'Death is a master from Germany.'
In result of second world war. The British Empire falls apart; the Soviet Union comes under a terror regime of Stalin. And the United States of America rises up. My country was split in 2 parts. We are forbidden to build an army for every future time. But in the last 4 decades we become the 4th leading economy in the world so far. And we got no outstanding debts. My culture was never a weak one. The population is disciplined and loyal. Germanians always do as they are commanded. If you command them bad things, they will do it. As well as good things. Not much crime among the citizens. They stick together. In contrary to the inhabitants of USA who hate each other.
So the simple answer for your question is: The history has shown: If it comes to crime in germany, it is a crime against 'the others'.

This is just wrong. IF a person originally became addicted because of treatment for illness or accident one cannot say that this was necessarily voluntary. They did not take the medication because they wanted to experiment in drugs but because they were prescribed to them. If they have not committed a violent crime but has done things like buying drugs on the street or using fake prescriptions or making drugs for personal use and not for distribution, they should be treated medically as an addict not criminally as an offender.

Why isn't rehab an alternative? Especially for first time offenders.

Sympathy piece for people who have hurt others and caused destruction to others. Theft in large amounts causes pain too, it can cause the victims life to spiral out of control. Addiction doesn't excuse the damage you cause others.

why doesnt the justice system address WHY these people commit crimes (often poverty and mental illness) and seek to help these people change and become better members of society? especially for non violent offenses. putting someone in prison for X amount of years, and then having them leave with nothing but another obstacle in finding a job doesnt benefit them or society.

Sometimes prison is so much better for alot of peaple, i know the circumstances are wrong but it gives most of them time to think and reflect and express themselves to themselves in ways they wouldnt have if they were out. And also sisterhood where they'll look at each other but still have a bond that they wouldnt have if they were out

A lot of "non-violent drug offences" are actually violent. Say you commit an assault for your drugs, you will then plead down to just the drugs. So on paper, it's non-violent. But if you look into some of the cases, they're quite violent.

Any life sentence should come with the possibility of parole, and should only typically be levied for repeat violent offenders (but should always be slapped on anyone convicted of murder).

I work at the State Hospital, including the forensic unit.. mentally ill is real, but there are ALOT of people who FAKE it to come to the hospital, instead of going to prison, which in turn, we get so full we have to turn others away, so the people who really need the help, dont get itn very sad!.. why does the USA have more people in prison than any other country in the world? The system is broken.. people don't get the help they need & our broken system causes poverty & crime. The people in the white House are the true criminals! They set us all up to fail.. & this is the outcome!

We have to decide what we want prison to do. Punish? Rehab? Protect society? Sentencing should reflect the purpose. Maybe even tailor prisons to accomplish these goals.

Clearly non-violent drug offenders should not be incarcerated. Indeed, a strong case can be made that there shouldn't be any drug laws at all.
As for the statement that black women are incarcerated at a higher rate than white women, my immediate reaction is to ask how many of these women grew up without fathers.
