Yep I liked the Level 42 of 1984. True Colours, the Hot Water mastermix and the tour that produced the live album A Physical Presence (I got to see them during it at Newcastle City Hall)....plus Mark's solo album Influences. For the fan it was great....for the band, record company pressure, sales and ambitions not quite reaching fruition. I often say it....the punter gets the better deal, just enjoying the music,
Phil Gould is one of the most hardcore drummer this planet ever seen. Hes a kind of it's own, pfunking epic drums in my book Boon brothers, lindup, King, pure quality, and yes i was at this gig, Epic.
Pure genius. Sound, mix and gear is perfect. I do like some of the later songs too but without a doubt this era was just out of this world. Line up never been bettered either. So...I agree totally.
YOU LUCK OUT !!!!!!!!! We were going to see them in 1986 at The Palace in Hollywood but there was an earthquake & my sister didn't want to risk an aftershock in that old building so we forfeited our tickets. We figured we'd catch them on their next tour but they never returned to CA in the 80s. I did get to see them at The Grove in 2010 but man alive I wish I could have seen the original lineup in their heyday .... I would have gone anyway but my sister insisted we don't.... there never was an aftershock either! 😡
@@OneHope4Heaven That old Chesnut eh Sunshine? Sister not wanting to risk an Aftershock?, Well no one is falsing them down Her neck! She could of had a Hooch or even stayed off the alcohol pops altogether and You could of enjoyed a wonderful gig from Britain's ( and indeed The Earth's ) Finest. 👍😄
I was lucky enough to see em twice in 83,just before they switched from pursuing accidents to grubbing after money & they were fantastic. Makes me laugh to hear to blokes at work say what big fans they are/were,when they've never even heard thier best stuff!
Superb musicianship - from each and every one of these guys - one better than the other. Tight unit. One of my fave L42 tracks. These guys do not disappoint in any way shape or form. Thanks for posting!!
Most drummers could not cope with MK percussive style. Phil Gould however simply evolved into one of the best drummers of all time. This is a special musical chemistry that is entirely unique. Awesome MK and PG
Yeah Mate, Mark and Phil just killed it eh and Boon and Mike layered on top to make this lot sublime? I was always hoping to see the original fab 4 live but obviously isn't going to happen now. The Best Band. Have a great Bank Hols Fella.👍
LUCKY !! Level 42 was the best in the early 1980's. World Machine is when they started to deviate. I am still a fan, though !! I listen to them almost daily !! Soooo groovy !
One of the most exciting and entertaining bands of all time. Live they are the best! Superb musicians and fantastic material to chew on! Gotta get my hands on this DVD!
The best jazz funk band EVER. Mark King was the musician along with Bernard Edwards, Chic and of course Jaco who inspired me to learn to play the bass guitar.
I saw Level 42 play at the end of October. The modern lineup is fantastic; they work extremely well together. Mike still uses the same electric piano that he has in this video! They performed this track live, and it was fantastic. They also did an album-perfect version of Turn It On, which was really surprising. They also played The Machine Stops which, until this tour, hadn't been performed live since about 1984. They are a fantastic band, if a little less energetic than in this vid!!
Thank you, Kolbola, for posting. This is superb. Decent sound too. I agree, GTAmediaproductions, the gould brothers were so good, the heart and soul of the band. Though it has to be said that Gary Husband and the other sidemen on Retroglide 06 did some amazing versions of 'Love Games', and 'Chinese Way'. Well said, though.
One of my all time Level 42 favorites, among many. What a monster rhythm section!! Sure would be great if they did another tour with the original line up.
I seen em live in '83 at the Bochum Zeche in Germany gig, we krauts made 'em coming :-) I'm proud i seen em at a 400 people gig burning the roof. Ill drums, what an animal!
Awesome song! I'd love to see this lineup together again. It was the best one IMO. Mark was sooo good even then, that it makes me either want to woodshed even harder or quit bass altogether!!! LOL
Could n,t agree more.Phil Gould,s style leaves so much room for Mark, just so solid.I don,t think Gary Husband is better or worse , just very different.Get on with it Mark ,Canada needed you!!.
Pristine transparent bass is technically amazing...but can't draw you in like old school honky bass... ...vests, comby pants, Doc Martens, insane groove triggered face pulling/jumping around...
The "hand slap" style of playing bass here by Mark King is superb . It really is both musical and adds percussion . Mark and others attribute american bassist Larry Graham for inventing the technique . When Sly and the Family Stone first started forming they had no drummer . The group's bassist Graham created the style to give some percussion and beat to the band
so much better and tighter with the original line up, Phil's drumming is far superior to all the others that have played with the band, i know we've lost boon, but mark should get phil back on drums.🤞
MK's playing from 06.10 is just sublime, the sound he creates is that unique combination of his huge talent and that unmistakeable JayDee sound.........I so wish he'd ditch those tinny Status Kingbasses which are not worthy of his musicianship :-(
There is an old theory when it comes to bass playing and drumming. If the bass line is simple, the drummer can play more, when the bass line is more complicated, the drummer plays more simplistic. It is a good rule of thumb to go by.
I came back here again after watching a performance of the same song from 2009, wondering why the later one wasn't hitting the spot (apart from it not being the classic lineup, for one thing).....and now I'd sum it up why THIS one DOES. It's because it's FAT!!! Mark's bass sound, the kick drum/the snare, Mike's Rhodes, Boon's guitar.....the compression on the sound even. It's tight AND FAT. That's the funk fusion I like anyway. Sorry present lineup, you can't touch this!! The whole DVD is VERY worth it btw.
Because the latest sound mixing (app. since 2006-2008 to nowadays) is overcompressed, the bass sound seems to came only from the line, not from the lineµphoned amp speaker, the bass EQ settings is too treble focused, too perfect, the drum is sparkly and the ambient is missing. Since around 2006, every live recording from Level 42 is too perfect, empty and sterile.
So great good playing !!!!
What a band! Level 42 at their best, everytime I listen to this tune my hair stands on end, thank you for existing !!!
Funky as Fuck, all 4 of them. A national treasure.
The good days of Level 42. No glitz, no glam and they jammed. Their music not yet commercialized. Tight performance! Just pure enjoyment!
I couldn't have said it better. Class.
You speak the utter truth.
Well said & agree 💯%!!!

A glorious performance…Typing this 42 years later in May 2024…The legacy still plays on…
What a treat! One of my favorite Level 42 tracks. Phil and Mark were two of the best rhythm sections on the planet. Their chemistry is pure magic.
My all time fave L42 Instrumental... This version... RAW!!!!
What an awesome track! I see lots of comments about Phil's drumming. IMHO, he was seriously underrated. One of the greats indeed.
Phil Gould is one of the most hardcore drummer this planet ever seen.
Hes a kind of it's own, pfunking epic drums in my book

Epic.
dig that!
Pure genius. Sound, mix and gear is perfect. I do like some of the later songs too but without a doubt this era was just out of this world. Line up never been bettered either. So...I agree totally.
absolutely agree, the boys were fantastic in this era.
YOU LUCK OUT !!!!!!!!!

Simply 4 times truly talent and they funked together like crazy...
Phil Gould with a groove that even Neil Peart envied
Wasn't Aware!
Level 42 Is way Beyond believable!
British talent at its very best. Mark is the King.
I was lucky enough to see em twice in 83,just before they switched from pursuing accidents to grubbing after money & they were fantastic. Makes me laugh to hear to blokes at work say what big fans they are/were,when they've never even heard thier best stuff!
Level 42,, always on point and full of musicians musician. The greatest!
Superb musicianship - from each and every one of these guys - one better than the other. Tight unit. One of my fave L42 tracks. These guys do not disappoint in any way shape or form. Thanks for posting!!
Real stamina from MK to hammer out that entire bass line for 7 minutes. Amazing stuff.
Most drummers could not cope with MK percussive style. Phil Gould however simply evolved into one of the best drummers of all time. This is a special musical chemistry that is entirely unique. Awesome MK and PG
Richard Boyle : Totally agree ! Always in function of the music and much more.
Yeah Mate, Mark and Phil just killed it eh and Boon and Mike layered on top to make this lot sublime? I was always hoping to see the original fab 4 live but obviously isn't going to happen now. The Best Band. Have a great Bank Hols Fella.👍
Arrr I can 😮
Excellent
Absolutely brilliant
can't... stop... watching...
Der beste und dreckigste Bass sound aller Zeiten 👍👍
LUCKY !! Level 42 was the best in the early 1980's. World Machine is when they started to deviate. I am still a fan, though !! I listen to them almost daily !! Soooo groovy !
Ultimate Band on the PLANET!!!!!!!
Probably the greatest piece of music ever written/peformed, changed my life!!!!!!!!!r
Just you wait until you hear them perform "mr. pink" in reading in 2001. Maybe not as good, but it blows this out of the water.
twenty one thousand views,it should be 750,000 views come on fans lets get this music shared, the Virginia fans want to see more views !!!!!!!
One of the most exciting and entertaining bands of all time. Live they are the best! Superb musicians and fantastic material to chew on! Gotta get my hands on this DVD!
The tonal range of the JayDee SNC is unrivaled.
I'm not so sure. He sounds like that on any bass. Thin strings do more for this tone.
Been to their concerts in Hamburg 1983 and 1984 in the Audimax - Still impressive music!
The best jazz funk band EVER. Mark King was the musician along with Bernard Edwards, Chic and of course Jaco who inspired me to learn to play the bass guitar.
They will never amount to anything.....other than The World's Greatest Band.
Great tune!!
One of the best Songs ever.
L42 perfection ❤️
my fav 42 track at their peak awesome..

GREAT GREAT GREAT - even after all these years! And THAT means something!!!! L42 FOREVER!!!!
WHAT A F...... GROOVE MACHINE!!!! FANTASTIC
One of my all time Level 42 favorites, among many. What a monster rhythm section!! Sure would be great if they did another tour with the original line up.

I seen em live in '83 at the Bochum Zeche in Germany gig, we krauts made 'em coming :-)
I'm proud i seen em at a 400 people gig burning the roof.
Ill drums, what an animal!
saw them there in 2000, what a show and what a great venue to see them :)
great bass playing and Gould plated guitar..
The JD is just so spectacular... its "Supernatural"... sorry had to say it!
Possibly my favourite track. Wonderful really. Given most bands always speed up their well known stuff when they play live.
boon....RIP
Great performance ...love it
sehr geil!!!
best ever groove from 42
PURE GENIUS.
brilliant tune, i think 1 of my fav instremental tracks from my fav band level 42
Awesome song! I'd love to see this lineup together again. It was the best one IMO. Mark was sooo good even then, that it makes me either want to woodshed even harder or quit bass altogether!!! LOL

big big big Phil Gould
thanx from hamburg
that JD sounds sooooooo much better than what he's using at the mo. Mark - please dust if off and lets here you playing it again!
Yes! Never sounded as good - although the alembic was lovely. After that - I agree- this sounds a million times better. It really does.
Pristine transparent bass is technically amazing...but can't draw you in like old school honky bass...
...vests, comby pants, Doc Martens, insane groove triggered face pulling/jumping around...
When looking and enjoy this legendary Level 42 video You have just reach the Top and dont think there is another Level even if You try some Licor 43🥳
Kings of Funk!!!
With the DR.. I forget Michelle ma bell or Madison neat 47th and Ventura blvd next to clover fields by blueberry hills and , Love ya man
Luister eens naar the persuit live in holland 2009. Het geluid is geweldig, vind ik.
Jazz-pop great !!!
2022
it's the nuts..if they played this at the next gig I would wet myself..!!

From their best album...
I agree.
Man, I LOVE Kansas City Milkman, the early versions are so weird though :-P
Tight
Musicianship.

In total agreement. I'm in awe. Always have been.
I feel like the trace Elliot amps changed as well. Status make great basses and he could have played ANY bass he wanted so must have been happy
There is an old theory when it comes to bass playing and drumming. If the bass line is simple, the drummer can play more, when the bass line is more complicated, the drummer plays more simplistic. It is a good rule of thumb to go by.
Then there is being in the not fucking about business actual properly!...World's Best Band!❤❤❤❤
Not Bad ! 👍👍👍
Please give me a time machine.......

Some good old 'progressive funk' from before they sold out.
For all the 1984 rockpalast stuff he has that JD sounging so scrummy.
Phil Gould
Go on then Name a better band than this lot.....anyone........there isn't.
Not Bad ! 👍👍👍
