The first thing I thought of when I read the news an hour ago. As an American I found him to be the most interesting and gifted master of dialogue. This scene is a gem.
An absolutely classic British film. Everyone was superb in this film and i think Daniel Craig probably got to be James Bond on the back of this. As for this scene, Michael Gambon kicks ass. He is no1 and he aint going to take no shit!
I know his was the less popular interpretation, but I loved Sir Michael Gambon's take on Dumbledore. Harsher, colder, a bit like Layer Cake, fitting the darker tone. "You still have a lot of shit to take, Harry". RIP
I never read the book but from Eddie Temple's banter about the Layer Cake you get the sense that he's nobody's fool but he's also wisest amongst the gangsters he's bested in his time. He knows that xXx has the blood to inherit his own position and probably figures that toughing him up with this humiliation is a sort of right-of-passage. It's a stark contrast to xXx's former boss who was prepping to frame him with the cops. Eddie knows his time to step down is nigh, so he perks this Young Turk up a notch in the Layer Cake. A lesser minded gang leader would have jealously snuffed xXx out.
You see it one way, I see it another. The movie didn't show us xXx's guys taking out Eddie Temple so it stands to reason (to me) that there's no vendetta to take Temple out and replace him by force. You say that Eddie is afraid of xXx then why didn't he just kill him outright in the first place or let "little Jimmy" set him up after hearing Mr. Troupe's wiretapping of Jimmy's backstabbing scheme? Sorry but you need to show me evidence from the movie that Eddie Temple was scared and was using the drug heist at his consignment center and slight humiliation of xXx was a mere ruse. I just don't see.
I think in some ways getting the scousers to do the job just right after Eddie's men took the pills would've erased any suspicion that it was xxxx and his crew, making Eddie probably think that the Serbs did it.
@@Fan_Made_VideosI still don’t understand what eddies angle was in this whole thing. Why piss off Xxx and his men without killing them and not expect revenge? He even said he is getting old now so what happens when he retires? What’s to stop xxx getting his revenge in 5 years time after watching and waiting…?
the tiny bit missing in the end in this is amazing, all them mad bastards wanted really was his head, as the door opens they were making millions and millions of pills, it wasnt about the pills or the money, it was all about getting the dukes head. love this film.
Totally, Gambon us such a great actor. I remember years ago, I was very stoned watching this movie and totally tuned in and when it got to that scene where he threatens Daniel Craig on the rooftop, I felt genuinely fearful, watching Gambon deliver his lines. It wasn't just "watching an actor", I felt genuinely invested and it reall impacted on me. I'm sure the dope had a huge impact on that, but also, an equal impact was Gambon's powerhouse of acting. None of that "over-the-top, Iconic, Memorable, scene stealing" shit of most "great actors".... But just pure understated, convincing, yet subtle reality, sucking you in.
@@childofthesun32 I used to smoke a bit...well quite a bit actually but I had stopped for almost a year and one evening I was like I miss it lol and my neighbour had some crazy skunk and I got couple of gram off him and was like gonna watch a good film and chill ended up watching gangster no 1 and smoked only 1 bong just as it began and honestly what you described I felt that and more.. was totally glued to the film and kinda shocked actually and was like wtf this is crazy, clearly the weed had hit me like a train... everything was so real and brutal what a night 😂
Just in case anyone was wondering what they said at the end, the man with Dragon that says "this is the end Mr Duke" says "Pilule?" which is Serbian for "Pills?" asking Dragon what happend to them. Dragon responds "Policija" which is Serbian for "Police". I saw online there was a lot of confusion about what was said there, also the dialog does not appear anywhere in the script.
It's not serbian it's romanian. I know they're supposed to be serbian but for some reason they speak romanian. Serbian and romanian languages/cultures have nothing to do with each other (besides some slavic ancestry). Trust me because I know what I'm talking about, it would be impossible for me (or any romanian or serbian citizen) to confuse the two languages. Even the actor playing Dragan's boss (not Dragon) is romanian, Marcel Iureș.
@@RatzCarnatz you can give them the in universe reason that they are purposely lying about being Serbian to hide who they truly are If you have ever watched the TV show the Wire. there are a group of international smugglers led by a man called the Greek and there is this scene: Vondas: My name is not my name. and you are only the Greek The Greek: and of course im not even greek ...

The first thing I thought of when I read the news an hour ago.

@@JAYKUS The reason it works is Sir Gambon allows the lines to be the star and not him trying to outshine the speech.
One of the tightest crime movies ever. One of my absolute favorites.
+Stevie G. You should check out "Eastern Promises" That is another great british made crime movie.
Thanks, I'll definitely look for it.
+Vince Niknazmanesh With very realistic fight scenes to add to that. Viggo mortensen does excellent with his russian accent. Great movie for sure.

Vaughn described him as Harold Shand 30 years on had he not been killed by the IRA.
