I just saw them live on New York last week. Roger Daltry, the singer, is 78 years old AND HE KILLED IT!!!!!!!!!!

The best of all the British invasion lead singers. None of the rest of the British lead singers brought his mix of rock, blues, and strong touch of folk/Celtic sound. There are some The Who songs that literally take me to a music of Irish 18 century celebrations around the fire. Just so raw and powerful.

What you need to know about Love Reign O'er Me is, on the Quadrophenia album, the main character Jimmy was contemplating suicide on the 3 songs preceding Love Reign O'er Me. As he sat on a rock during a storm, drinking a bottle of gin as the tide rose around Jimmy and the rock, he suddenly realized it was foolish for him to kill himself because the only thing that really matters is love.

You will be blown away by the ending of the real version of Love Reign O'er Me, where Keith Moon puts on a drum clinic for the ages!!!! BTW, another awesome song on the Quadrophenia album is: "The Punk and the Godfather". An absolute banger, with Roger Daltrey singing at his peak!

I hear for part of the end of the album version Keith was given a set of Tubular Bells to wail on for the crescendo, and instead he simply pushed them over, and that's the sound on the record.

The Who have many great eras and albums but my favorite is their early live performances. Check out something from Live at Leeds - Young Man Blues, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Magic Bus, or my favorite My Generation. All are stripped down raw bangers showing the amazing abilities of each musician. It's some of Pete's best work driven by John's driving base and Keith's machine gun fills. INCREDIBLE!!!

CastleW is for "Castle Walls" an awesome deep cut by the band STYX (A good start for Styx would be: "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue").
As mentioned, the original album version is preferred by most fans instead of this re-mix version (maybe youtube video with lyrics is not as HQ as the vinyl). I think the original CD had some significant tape hiss.
"Won't Get Fooled Again" off the "Who's Next" album is what I suggested after this one (another epic song) and then "Eminence Front".
Heart, Bad Company, and the Eagles round out my top 7 bands (Styx, The Who, Boston, Foreigner, Heart, Bad Company, Eagles).

Yes, some of the remixing going on today, takes away the rawness of the original versions. It's like trying to make something too perfect. Like the early, simply produced Aerosmith great music, compared to the later overproduced 90's Aerosmith.

There is a problem with that version and that is that the drums are literally silenced. No matter how much you like that version, you got to listen to the other versions because the drummer Keith Moon is off the charts destroying the entire song with his drum Dominance. As far as you guys comparing them to ELO, if you grow up in the 70s in high school where we were, you would have been bullied. No one and I mean no one would ever dare compare ELO to the best of the best, The Who. If you grew up in the 70's, it was always The Who 1st & Led Zeppelin 2nd or Led Zeppelin 1st & The Who 2nd because only those two groups had the raw power and energy that absolutely no one else could come close to so to compare ELO to The Who, you would have been punished and abused cuz everyone knew much better than that back during the real hey day of rock and roll. Never in my life or anyone that I know has anyone dared compare ELO to The Who. They are truly uncomparable and you guys obviously don't know true music like me and my generation did. Our Generation knew that the biggest difference between The Who and Led Zeppelin was the singers because Rodger Daltrey brought that masculine hardcore manly singing Style where Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin brought his fruity, la la la la la sound and Rodger Daltrey would die before he would ever sing la la la in a song

This remastered version with added orchestration is frankly shit compared to the original arrangement. It muddies and suppresses key phrasing and instrumentation throughout the piece, and abruptly truncates the powerful climactic ending. Whoever decided this was a good thing should be taken to the woodshed. Highly disappointing, but good to know that it exists so it can be avoided.
