    About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

"An INFJ will dip into their introverted feeling FROM their introverted thinking perspective {meaning, the introverted thinking happens FIRST... THEN the introverted feeling comes into conscious awareness}, and the INTJ will dip into their introverted thinking FROM their introverted feeling perspective." (Again, in the INTJ, the introverted feeling takes precedence in their conscious awareness, but their introverted thinking can be brought into the light of consciousness, once the introverted feeling needs have been addressed FIRST.)
Harry, this level of understanding and degree of thorough exploration is why you continue to be one of the best (if not, THE best) cognitive "typists" on UA-cam. Thank you for the teachings, my friend! ~Matt :)

Very interesting. I known for a year that I'm INTJ, but from time to time I wonder if I'm INFJ. But it's clear that I'm INTJ because of convergent Fi: I am indeed very much in touch with my sense of identity. No matter how many times I tried to change, because of my feeling insecure for example, or socially inapt and disconnected to the immediate world (physical and social), I always come back to who I've always been. Everything I loved and felt passionate about as a kid hasn't changed, it only became more complex. As for my discomfort or feeling of being foreign to the real world, I noticed that by finding patterns, symbols and synchronicities around me, I can deeply relate to reality. Your video explains this with precision, and I thank you for that!

Using the shadow function Ti is possible, but does not happen as often for INTJs.
Here is a real life example of Ni (introverted intuition) which feeds off all the functions:
I was attending my first HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) meet up, which was outside Hyde Park, in Central London. The park is huge and the location of the meet up was unclear. Outside the park, was noisy with cars and ambulance sirens with crowds of people. When I arrived late, I noticed a person (HSP1) leaving because the noise must have got to her and she was alone.
My second HSP meet up was in a pub. There was 20 of us in the meet up. When I arrived I noticed an INFJ sitting on a sofa with an ESFP chatting. I was speaking to a fellow introvert when another person (HSP2), arrived late. I was in a deep conversation, so I couldn't speak to her. 15 minutes later she (HSP2) left.
Then the internal dialogue starts. Ni is like a whisper and is difficult to pick up in real time, as it belongs in the realm of the subconscious.
    Se- That HSP2 left.
Ni- I've seen this before (HSP1). Maybe she was anxious? Although, will need more data.
Se- That INFJ sitting on the sofa, is alone.
Ni- Why is she alone? What is going to happen next?
Te- (Quotes science book). When people are angry, scared, exercising, excited, anxious the sympathetic nervous system is activated. The brain (hypothalamus) stimulates the pituitary gland, which then triggers the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce adrenaline, which cause the heart to beat faster and the lungs to breath faster.
Ni- What are you saying Te? That the INFJ is angry? Excited? Scared? Anxious?
Se- She is not angry or excited.
Ni- What does anxiety look like?
Te- (Quotes body language book). Fidgeting, tremor, finger scratching.
Se- She does have a tremor!
Ni- Wow, she is anxious. Wait, I've seen this pattern before, the very anxious HSP... HSP1 and HSP2. Both of them ran away...The INFJ person is going to run away soon...
Fi- I'm feeling sad. A fellow HSP is anxious. Can you do something Ni?
Ni- What? Change someone's future path? Is that possible? Te do you know anything about anxiety or stress?
Te: (Quotes Professor David Peters - Centre of Resilience, University of Westminster, London, UK)
Stress is an engineering word. When you take a chunk of metal and you give it a twist. You stress it and it bends out of shape. Human beings don't bend out of shape, they spring back. When you stress people. Some people don't spring back into a good shape. Some people spring back into the same shape, more or less. Some people bounce back; actually they bounce forward. They come through adversity, in a way, giving healthy growth. Resilient people are not people who have an easy time all of their lives. Human beings are challenge seeking organisms. When we go through a challenge. If we adapt in a healthy way, we are resilient.''
Ni: Yes facing your anxiety can help growth, but how do you make the first bounce forward? Do you have anything psychology related Te?
    Te: (Quotes Psychology Today)
Attend a social gathering (even if you don't want to). If you're prone to social anxiety, it's important to make time for socialization. It's cool to be an introvert, but know that we live in a universe that revolves around connecting with others.
Ni: Aha! That's it! That's the final puzzle piece!
At this point the subconscious (Ni) becomes conscious.
Ni: THE INFJ ON YOUR LEFT, ON THE SOFA IS ANXIOUS. GO AND TALK TO HER OR SHE WILL RUN.
I walk towards the INFJ. I almost miss her, as she puts on her jacket and is about to leave. An ESFP stops her leaving and I join them, calming down the INFJ.

Simply no other source would do in terms of quality, non-heuristic-reliance-ness (?) and just overall care for the internal logical consistency of the theory being presented.

I tested as both INFJ and INTJ and still confused. I feel people, sensitive and emotional. I go out of my way to do things for others ~such a giver, at times get abused for being such, empathize and careful what people think of me -my image and avoid confrontation. Gullible -I don’t trust but gives benefit of the doubt. l love Psychology just because I can read other people’s minds, intentions and how it works- to my advantage.
BUT I’m distant. I’m not a good listener. I get drained with people’s presence. Business minded, goal and future oriented. Sapiosexual. I’d rather be my own company. I’m too stubborn to have things my way. Too FIXED once I decide. Follow my brain. I’m inflexible in most of the things. Extremely perfectionist/OC .Organized. Prepare way ahead. I am too detailed with what I want and will do things to materialize it to the point it’s annoying. I try hard to get what I want. IDFK being alone in public, having a meal, going to places etc, that it comes out weird. I’m systematic, logical~ I can formulate find ways to create, and simplify things to be efficient, cold and (secretive my dark side-I don’t follow tradition, break values/rules for my benefit). The “brain” and leads but without having to interact with people. They say I’m too independent and an Alpha. I also think this way. I’m cold to people most of the time, alone time most is a MUST and silence the outside world. I love quiet places alone. I’m too focused everytime I work like no other people exist at the moment. I rarely reach out FIRST. Have too high boundaries. Sometimes, don’t care about people. Not updated with other people’s lives nor feel the need to get them updated to mine. And lastly, I’d admit I try my best to be nice because I know I’m NOT LIKABLE .
I’m both and been confused. It’s contradicting. I possess both .HELP!!!!😭😭😭

Yay! Another Ni-dom video! I think in a way I've always had a very intense relational super-scope that I didn't learn what to do with until perhaps late adolescence. A lesson in Fe was how self-conscious that can make other people feel! I would say that accessing the thinking side of my focus can provide a helpful release for them as well as give me an accurate check-point for my decisions, so perhaps I would add that the coldness that can go with it isn't always unpleasant; the platforms of both thinking and feeling can be rewarding!

This video has been one of the most insightful videos I have ever heard concerning my brain functions. You almost know my brain better than myself. Please please forgive me when I say this... for simplicity’s sake, INFJs seem to think with some similarities as myself, INTJ, just a little less complete or maybe not quite coming full circle. For example, my son was having cramps in his legs this morning and attributed it to an “injury” from PE yesterday. However, the injury is probably only a culprit in creating a catapult from the built up lactic acid from PE and became deficient in Calcium and Potassium, an underlying problem. He made a connection but it was a little incomplete... we got in a little fight because I knew what I was talking about and I needed to educate him and he was trying to tell me I was wrong. While he wasn’t entirely wrong, he did not see the whole picture. I do understand that I’m a bit more of a mature INTJ and he is a bit more immature INFJ... being a teen you know.

Just left another comment about this elsewhere about INTJs. For me personally, despite knowing any type can potentially work with any other type under the right circumstances, I definitely feel I jive with INTJs better than INFJs in certain scenarios. At least our thinking and feeling functions are slanted in the same direction. I struggle with the whole being more detached from their feelings thing as I just don't get that. An INTJ seems to know how they feel easier, despite all the stereotypes of them being cold, this is definitely not always true. This is not to say I don't like INFJs, I just have a harder time understanding where they ate coming from.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 роки тому +5

Honestly I often have a harder time knowing where other INFJs are coming from too - the Fe authority function can make expressing any feelings contrary to a harmonious/predictable social environment a pretty uncomfortable experience. That being said, seeing others do this has allowed me to be aware of why I do the same and make improvements - while absolute type development is more thereotical, we can definitely achieve balance within our cognition (in this instance towards better Fi communication) :)

@@CognitivePersonality This is interesting because I'm an INFJ but I still feel like I do a relatively good job expressing myself. I have consciously tried to because it is one of those things that gets to me. My thoughts may be out of the blue and new to other people plenty of times, but, at least for things that I have thought about prior to talking to someone, I can correlate the present situation and/or things that the other person is also aware of/can be made aware of to what I have already known (my logic) and create an atmosphere of me exchanging this "new" perspective for the person's understanding. A lot of what makes up what I feel towards something comes from what I observed and found to be the right way to think on a subject, so if someone asks me how I feel about something, whatever conclusion I have drawn from the past, whether leaning to one side or in the middle of extremes, I will just express what I think regarding whatever I was asked about so that the other person understands my logic and why it is my opinion/why I don't have an opinion or particular feeling to assign to the topic/subject. I tend to have a full/complex perspective of situations and things based on feeling and objectivity so though I tend to know exactly how I feel about something, how I feel about it comes from all that backed up logic I constructed from observing the topic/subject. I spent plenty of time in my childhood using Ni-Ti to observe/form frameworks of thinking around people (human nature) such that it came to a point of drawing my own conclusions of human nature and many other things, so I definitely have my own set of feelings from the experiences I had and observed. Once, I took a test that lists how well you use what and my highest was *Intuitive judging 70%, then introverted feeling 67%, then introverted intuition 65%,* then feeling judging, then feeling perceiving, then *extraverted feeling 52.5%, then extraverted intuition 52.5%,* then intuitive perceiving, then *introverted sensing 47.5%, then introverted thinking 47.5%,* then sensing judging, then thinking judging, then thinking perceiving, then *extraverted sensing 35%, then extraverted thinking 32.5%,* then Sensing perceiving. -My highest being Ni if you take into account intuitive judging having been the highest, then Fi then Fe [Ne was equal in %] then Ti [Si was equal in %] then Se then Te according to the test results. The same database I used for that test did type me as Infj already too, this other test was more for specifics of how well you use what. I was pretty shocked at how relatively balanced my results came out. To be fair, the aspect of an INTJ that's about constantly improving yourself and keeping a stronghold on who you are, I relate to. However, I feel those were things I consciously decided I needed for myself to get to a better place around when I transitioned from elementary to middle school. I definitely don't innately keep improving myself like an INTJ - sometimes I can definitely be in a state of not wanting to change for the better bc I'm stubborn af of course. I take my time with improving myself in the outer world. In my inner world is where I more innately constantly try to improve myself so that in the long run I become the person I want to be. Acting out the change will usually take more time to adapt to. Self-growth is a thing for INFJs too, though not like INTJs, who care a lot about efficiency. I care more about *emotional* efficiency. A pet peeve of mine is people who are bad at dealing with emotions. Example: Someone who feels empty and doesn't realize it is likely due to an unfulfilling relationship they are in and are hesitant to leave behind. It could go on for years even. -Such a person is likely to not be intuitive while having Fi in their stack if they don't recognize how they themselves being that way is bad for the other person even when the situation has been directly explained to them by someone else they consulted on the subject. They keep evaluating their own emptiness while not recognizing the dynamics at play in their life outside of the sensing world/concrete facts, which means they didn't think to regard the other person's own emotions more seriously.

What I could tell about the 'firm identity' from my experience is that I see it as (pardon the jargon. I'm just trying to learn it by comparing to the things that I'm familiar with) 'a field theory which is perturbed by some irrelevant deformations', i.e. even after a perturbation which moves us away from the fixed point, we flow back to this point again.
No matter how many deformations I went through till this stage of adulthood, I want the very same thing that I wanted in my childhood, like the story of Moby Dick. Maybe this is related to the Ni-Fi pairing, and interestingly today I read a quote by Seneca which might summarize the whole thing: "Good people will do what they find honorable to do, even if it requires hard work; they'll do it even if it causes them injury; they'll do it even if it will bring danger."
I also very much like to share my ideas with people, privately discussing it with my close friends or with some group of kinda unknown people (in outdoors like university or in social media). I used to overdo it unconsciously which made people irritated resulting in keeping their distances.
Finally, to give you a recent example on the divergent process of Te-Se, when I learned that the annular solar eclipse (June 21) coincides with the summer solstice, I kinda felt a weirdness about it so I went through the whole NASA's database on solar eclipses and found the ones that happened on that year's sum. sol. and then the events that had happened on that specific year to find any interesting patterns... (actually I had something in mind so the whole process was to confirm it). Please don't ask me about the results cuz I won't tell. Anyway, I think I talked enough, so cheers! :)

This is great! Dense, in a good way. I especially like your point ~8:20 about INFJs being open to other logical conclusions, whereas INTJs being very open to new information -- but (inferring here) generally needing to own (self-synthesize) the logical conclusions that are drawn from the information. Also, later on in the video, I really relate to your explanation about the intensity with which an INTJ can experience the external world, e.g. finding meaning in art.

  • @HillyHonka

I can definitely relate to being unaware of the external mechanical environment, once I am engaged in a social situation. If I get into a conversation with my coworker, I will become totally distracted and unaware of what’s going on around me and forget that we have a task to perform. I have to disengage and return to my work. This can be irritating to others around me but because I am so focused on the single conversation I am engaged in, I won’t be aware of how my actions are affecting others around me and my partner (INFP) will notice this before I do.

I've been thinking and it seems like typing depends so heavily on self awareness or someone like yourself to assist, but even then you need honest reporting. It annoys me when random people announce someone isn't what they've typed themselves though, cognition is so personal and internal, how can someone looking at a brief slice of you say anything to the contrary? Is it possible you can do a video on what it means to be an INFJ? Might sound overly simplistic, it's just that I feel like you've broken a lot of stereotypes and adopted a different way of assessing things. • @novaimperialis
    @novaimperialis 4 роки тому +2

So now I know that I'm not an ENFJ and I'm torn apart between those two.
I relate to everything INTJ now, but I'm still trying to disprove myself that I'm an INTJ.
What you talked here sounds like my relationship with my truly INFJ friend.
I'm focused more on logic and "logical" emotional responses(while not being logical on my emotional responses myself) , while he is focused on butterflies(my entp friend says that about me as well-Ni wanderland). And we actually got some arguments because of this. I still think that I won because of raw logic, but he won with his Fe empath attitude that makes you forget everything. Although I always doubt his Fe mask, I have learned to not care anymore. If he is lying to me, he's lying to himself. And that's more evident from what you said, as INFJs are unaware of their emotions, so they can lie to themselves and others... but they can't lie to you if you dont trust them in the first place...
Another thing that really makes me uncomfortable is his quietness. I want to discuss real stuff with him but he always just responds with his no or yes, but he doesn't contribute.
Its annoying! And I think this is one of the reasons why INFJs can't develop. Because they focus just on their Ti framework and they don't try to find external sources to validate their frameworks that could crash in any moment without a proper base.
Also, could you elaborate on the INTJs being empaths? I knew that they were sympathetic but not empaths.
Also, could I contact you, and not for typing, but only for getting someone to therorize(or terrorize) with? I'm starved to see other view points to my theories and see if they are correct. It's important for me to know if my theories fits with the Pokémon that I think I'm. It feeds my low ego into a big one... and I need that for my depression...

It's very unusual for INFJs to withhold their thoughts or be silent in one-to-one conversation. That's more common with INTJs, partially because they often put more effort into reflecting on what a person has to say rather than jumping to Fe response mode.
Mature INTJs can often consciously relate the position of another person to themselves - it's not as much sympathy often times as is literally feeling and deeply understanding the emotions of another.
I'd love to bounce, but my time is very, very limited these days - it's hard enough finding time to respond to comments :)

    Hi!
Just a quick question: Is it possible for the INFJ to dip down into Fi from Fe in an unhealthy manner? I was wondering if the divergence of Fe would somehow affect Fi as opposed to dipping down into it from convergent Ti? I was wondering if perhaps the INFJ could only enact change in Fi when dipping down from Ti. Thank you so much!

As an INFJ myself, INTJ is only type I considered, I don't get why so many people can't decide between INFJ and INFP, to me they are so different! I got feeling that on INFJ groups there are much more INFPs who mistype themselves rather than INFJs, and INFPs are much louder there, making more posts, memes about INFJs and this makes things even worse... Or maybe it's just my imagination and something is wrong with me XD?

@@CognitivePersonality I watch both CPT and Asurapsych as my ultimate go-to. The more I dive into it, the more I juggle between an indefinite INFJ and at other points an indefinite INTJ. I've at least managed to settle that my dominant-inferior cognition is Ni (dom) and Se (inf) for certain. I just have so much difficulty pinpointing if I am Ni-Ti or Ni-Fi, Fe-Se or Te-Se. I carry characteristics of both types, represented by both channels. I have a very active and sharp Ti operating under Ni, my internal properties being one of the Ni-Ti archetype explained by CPT. I theorise a lot on the human condition, my fixations have always been tunnel-visioning into the intertwining between psychology and philosophy of the human mind and the overall essence of existence. I have barely even opened a book properly, yet I am (humbly) the most knowledgeable folk around about these topics. I can explain perspectives of depth into my own diving in much detail, although I can also struggle to explain the more abstract jargon to someone who doesn't instantly 'get it'. This hits closer to home for an INFJ processing unit, right?
But I also find myself operating in a rather Te manner. I can align myself with the external-mechanical value of the world around me. I can have an easy understanding and falling in line with the natural order of the objective world (e.g. calculate the necessary things ahead of time, INTJ "mAsTeRmiNd" stereotype-ish). Do I value that other some social harmony world? I guess I don't know. I sometimes do, I sometimes don't. What I value or don't value seems to sorta shift through life, as my perspective (Ni lens) gets updated. I would have liked to be able to settle with one answer, but life currently seems far too complex for my little brain to digest all at once, so, I suddenly find myself in a state of hopeless agnosticism between concepts and notions of.. everything I wish to figure out.
I know this is not all there is to Ni, or I even worry I might have phrased myself wrongly at some points, so I hope to not be misinterpreted for some Ne user of some sorts, as I do have an issue of being misinterpreted by most people, an inability on my part. A person once thought I was ENTP due to the fluidity of my Ni-Ti(?) analysis mode where I encompassed a vast array of possible philosophical realities. Devil's advocate if you will. Eitherway, I would appreciate any sort of feedback. I have watched most of your content and I'm sort of narrowing it down everytime, but always get stuck between INFJ-INTJ. I fear I'll never uncover the mystery of my judging processes and I'll merely remain with my perceptional ones, lol. I'm 21 y.o. if that matters at all. I know these things go by developmental pathways.. but it's also true that not everyone has had the same pace.

Hey Harry, I've labored over these new concepts of cognitive functions after a fair amount of fascination with Carl Jung's works, as well as Nietzsche, via the medium of Jordan Peterson's cultural message (these are just an example of men and ideologies which I think are massively inspiring to adopt as preemptive lenses for one's own personal lense on their own journey of self-understanding and leading their life). I've thought time an again that I could be an INTJ or INFJ, (maybe even an ISxP or their extroverted counterparts, but my natural state is more of a cognitively proactive one, although I find myself to be quite apt at Se); it certainly can be tough to figure out your primary mode of being when its right in front of you, metaphorically speaking. I like to think I love to get to the heart/core of understanding life, relations, my own personal desires, individual meaning vs societal meaning, and quite enjoy these topics in social conversation much more than the latest gossip and find them inwardly satisfying when I can actually fins someone to contend with in that way. And I'm a guy that wants to further clarify his own goals to walk his own journey as great as he can while hopefully being a light to others to lead their own lives better once I can find that inner drive and courage to do so (as genuine and non-pretentious as I can get that sound). Any potential first insights on my type? Would appreciate a response if you come across this. You do great work in this field and I hope you keep it up, Harry. Cheers.

The most popular test that already exist is the 16p (very superficial) and they added a fifth trait which they call identity (assertive or turbulent). I wonder what you think about that. I also like when you explain the subtypes and different situations that explain better how these cf are related and how they activate less dominant cf. I wonder if you can recommend online free tests better than the 16p. BTW I am not sure if I am a INTJ, INFJ, INTP or even an ISTJ. If in your videos you can provide with more concrete examples (for those not so familiar with the cf) it would be great.

I was always confused as an infj because i do fall into an ni-fi loop but there is anything else that could indicate I'm and intj. Is it even possible an fi-si shit which is the worst state for us. In that case the solution is the extraverted functions, fe-se. While digging into fi most of the times is a negative manifestation, sometimes, through music especially I have had some really deep fi moments, where I touched my core, and when I let myself loose enough with people i feel comfortable I can dig into my fi core and sing. I love getting lost in fi-ni with music, nature and in-between sleep-wakefulness states. Is that possible for an infj? because that looks more like isfp or intj or whatever. idk

Hi Harry. I must say I'm very interested in your approach to the types! I have a few questions. How does Jung's types correlate exactly with the Myers-Briggs theory? Does the Myers-Briggs theory have more types (at least one, I think I've heard)? Also, have you studied the four temperaments originated by Hippocrates? I've heard the 16 types were based on these original four. I heard this specifically said by someone who endorsed the Keirsey four temperaments, which have different qualities than Hippocrates' version of the theory. I've actually discovered by studying the original four, that Sanguine seems ENFP, Choleric seems ESTJ, Melancholy seems INFJ, and Phlegmatic seems ISTP. it seems that each type has one crucial thing in common with the other three. Such as how Sanguine and Choleric have Extroverted in common, the Sanguine and Melancholy have Feeling in common, and so forth. However, the Keirsey theory seems to work in a way that I haven't yet "mapped out". Anyway, thought this might interest you. Glad I found your channel! Have a good day! 🙂

I have a question, Harry. So, Se users are more engaged in the real world, especially if it’s convergent. However, ISTJs and ISFJs don’t have Se in their four conscious functions, yet they’re known as types that are highly engaged in the real world and barely daydream. This is confusing.
Technically, since they don’t have a strong Se, they should also be less engaged in the real world, and quite tired when engaging in an environment with lots of stimulation and movement. So, how can you explain this?

Cognitive Personality Theory I see. That makes a lot of sense.
Also, does this mean that people who have Ne/Se-Te are less sociable than people with Ne/Se-Fe? Since the codec assigned to their lens is focused on different things; the Te person would focus on the external logical world, while the Fe person would focus on the external emotional world, making the latter naturally more sociable.

How does an INFJ quit being so deeply emotional responsible and accountable for the relationships and communication between their loved ones, or anyone they are around at the moment as to tie themselves up in knots with a constant stress over the emotional health and welfare of others? Noticing all the micro-elements, which we know will, if left unchecked turn into bigger issues, means we are constantly on alert. Scanning, searching, listening. It is exhausting. I lead with Ni and work with tech and research, and if it were not for these traits of mine {I am a wife and mother, perhaps that plays apart as well}, I would type myself as INTJ, which others in my life tend to as they see the "put together, aloof" side- they often do not see the inner work and subtle ways I keep relationships among people, of all backgrounds, ages, religions, etc, flowing, honest, open, considerate and on point. It is not my choice, it just is. I actually greatly dislike the Fe and wish I could turn it off and not care so deeply. I can turn it off to outsiders if I need to, but my crew is a different matter. What are your thoughts on this? Hope all is well with you.

Honestly rather than turning Fe off entirely I would say the best solution is a kind of faith, or relinquishing of control. Fe tends to deactivate when we are not worrying and micro-managing, and there are definitely steps we can take to feel more secure in our Fe environment :)
