    Fun video. I did know that Motion Picture Funnies was a Weekly. Didn't know some of the other answers.

    Namor's first appearance is actually in Marvel Comics #1. Motion Picture Comics never even paid Bill Everett for his comic. Pirated material doesn't count as being published.

      Thanks Skully for the info. I had not heard that the work had been pirated. Do you have any citations. I would love to dig in. Thanks again.

    I happen to own detective comics 29 and I’m looking at the cover right now and I cannot see a Batman emblem on his chest. I think you should take a closer look at that one.

      Detective 29, it's not technically showing. Although I think the black dot under his chin is supposed to imply it's there.
      Agreed on Marvel 1 not showing a number 1 on the cover.

      Hi Mancave! You are right. I looked at several copies of Marvel 1...couldn't find it either. Couldn't find it on Marvel Mystery Comic 2 either...Apparently, MM3 was the first to start the numbering.

      We'll say correct on a technicality :-). ...yeah, I didn't know that 'Tec 29 didn't show the emblem...or perhaps I had forgotten it. Thanks for the eagle eyes, my friend!

  • @tec31kid
    @tec31kid 10 місяців тому

    Actually, two notations on a few questions :
    The Bat emblem answer is technically Tec 29 but since the question seemed to refer to a Batman titled book, then Bat 5 is correct but it’s not the first (Tec 29)
    Marvel 1 and Supe 1 both have “#1” omitted from their front covers.

      He's right about marvel comics 1 not having a 1 on it.

    So long as we’re digging into obscure facts about late ‘30s comics, here’s a question I haven’t been able to answer - is there some kind of connection between Marvel Mystery Comics and the automotive chemical known as Marvel Mystery Oil, which was marketed beginning in 1923 (and is still sold today)?

      Okay, I looked around online and found something interesting.
      As serious Timely/Atlas fans may know, publisher Martin Goodman used the designation “Red Circle” on some of his pulp magazines - including a few issues of Marvel Tales in 1939-40.
      Red Circle used a distinctive circular logo. It contained a red dot in the center, surrounded by a black ring upon which was printed white, block lettering that said “A RED CIRCLE MAGAZINE.”
      In 1949-1950, a similar logo appeared on the covers of the first four issues of the comic book titled Marvel Tales (issues 93-96). This time, the lettering said “MARVEL COMIC”.
      Now, please go online and locate any image of the product Marvel Mystery Oil.
      You will notice that the label includes a circular logo. In the center of the logo is a red dot with "MM OIL” in white printed inside it. The red dot is surrounded by a very thin white band that, in turn, is surrounded by a black ring with the words “MARVEL OIL COMPANY SINCE 1923” printed on it in white, block letters. There's a red ring surrounding the black ring.
      Quite a bit of similarity there.
      Also, I found a Marvel Mystery Oil ad in the January 1930 issue of the magazine Automobile Digest, and it contained the Marvel Mystery Oil logo described above.
      So the MMO logo was in use before Martin Goodman began using a similar image. Or so it seems.
      On this basis alone, I think there’s reason to believe Martin Goodman was enamored of the Marvel Mystery Oil company’s merchandising efforts and sought to borrow a few elements for his own use.
      Thoughts?

      Hi Tom, Thanks, my man, for taking the time to do some research. Yes, wouldn't surprised me if Goodman was inspired by MMO. Let me share this with my buddy, Ben who is a Marvel Mystery historian to get his opinion.

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch 9 місяців тому

      Yes, by all means.
      I was also thinking about firing off an e-mail to the Marvel Mystery Oil company to ask if they were aware of any, er, appropriation of their ad imagery by Timely Comics back in the day.

    I don't know much about comics (it's basically my 4th hobby in terms of fervor), and I got 8 points because I guessed 31,000 ASM 300s and I'm assuming 1 point for the most obviously desirable book in my collection (Crime Suspenstories 20 in 9.2).

      Hi Rocket, Just looked up Hulk 181 in the 1990 Overstreet Guide. They list it as Hulk 180 1st app cameo and 181 as Wolverine Appearance. No first mentioned with 181 although the 181 is priced 3.5x of 180...so, clearly the more valued book even back then.
