I literally NEVER comment on UA-cam, but as a 30-year veteran of a major TV news organization, I can honestly say that Jason Demers is nothing short of fantastic. His ability to naturally and casually bring out the best in Joe - and yes, it helps that they are friends - is seriously impressive. Love Joe, of course - dude is just just absolutely AWESOME. But shout out to JD for absolutely killing the interview,, seriously.

I remember a few years back my truck broke down on Joe’s street out on a county road in St. Thomas. Being the guy Joe is, he made an effort to stop and make sure we were ok. Great guy, great player. Love that he never forgot his roots too👍

Brodie, truthfully, sharks fans took you for granted. Ive always liked you, i know some didn't, but thats life, no one will always like you, but man, when someone else gets in the spotlight it really makes you realize how much of a pro you really were brodie. I know the new guy is new, and will get better, but we all miss you brodie.

I met Joe briefly during a game in LA. Joe had just gotten into a fight with Drew Doughty (Drew's) first. I was sitting 3 seats over from the Visitors Penalty Box and the Kings Team photographer was sitting beside me and with a Boston accent he's explaining how he would chirp the players. When Joe was skating to the box, I asked Boston Man to ask Joe, if Fordy taught him how to fight? When I was 20, I was struggling with sobriety and I was working for the Soo Hounds on Game Nights. The Hounds let me go and Fordy and Anne took me in because Fordy saw a kid who needed some help. Fordy Varcoe, was also Joe's trainer during his time in the Soo. It was there during the 99-00 season, Fordy had me helping him as he was working with the Thunderbirds and I would hear the stories about Joe, Back to Boston dude - He told me nervously that he didn't talk to Joe because "Joe is just hockey". I laughed, made a comment about Boston and he says to Joe "The guy two seats over wants me to ask you if Fordy taught you how to fight?". Joe looks at me and I leaned into the glass and said "Varcoe" and for that split second, I felt that connection. To see Joe's eyes light up at the sound of the name is something I will always remember.

I grew up in Port Stanley. His brother Alex was a year older than me and we went to the same junior high and high school. I remember in high school hearing about his phenom brother Joe that was cooking it in minor hockey. Been living in Asia for nearly 30 years and was devastated watching the 2016 Finals and Joe missing that opportunity. By far one of the best to ever lace them up but more importantly a stand-up, humble role model of a human being. Never forgets his roots, thanking those around him and kind to everyone. He kept his boat at my father's marina and although I never had a chance to meet him, my father would gloat at how wonderful and respectful a guy he was. To this day. Congratulations Joe.

Beautiful interview with a Sharks hockey icon JD, you even made Jumbo cry around 44:00 into the conversation. Lots of inside knowledge and participant perspective in your talk. JD, you are a natural born interviewer. Your future in broadcasting is bright but you must not compromise on authenticity, keep your edge and free speech instincts as you work in hockey punditry on TV and in podcasting. A man who loves hockey so much must be able to find a way to keep working on player development with the Sharks to get the next generation off the ground. Thornton knows that hard work in practice puts you in position to make the most of your luck on the ice when it comes your turn. The way that the hockey gods or an almost beyond control rubber puck bounces and changes direction is essential to understanding why hockey is so entertaining to watch. The puck luck factor in hockey is compounded by luck in regards to injuries, ice conditions, burdens of referee judgments, sticks breaking, skate blades failing and other factors. Hockey is slippery luck squared on ice with snow.
Shouldn't interviewers always wear some shoes??? Not if the interviewee has cast his shoes off because it is summer in Canada and we don't need our snowshoes.

Jumbo played in a police/fire pickup game with us once a few months back. My son (also named Joe) is 21 years old and plays juniors in Canada now. Decent size kid at 6'2/190, so he handles himself just fine on the ice. My son was on the ice that day Jumbo played with us and got the opportunity to try and play defense against Jumbo. Of course I know my kid is nowhere near NHL level, but as far as a beer league comparison goes, he's easily top tier beer league player. As Jumbo skated by into the zone, my kid tried to pinch him into the boards. It ended up in more of a hooking as Jumbo went by. My kids added weight and hooking attempts did nothing to slow Jumbo down. My kid even stopped moving his feet and attempted to really hook him and hold him back. My kid told me it was like wake surfing. LOL Jumbo took it like a champ and was even laughing. Such a cool dude and great family man. I actually think I respect him more for his family values and good character than his hockey playing, which says a lot! Love that he's attached to San Jose!
