I was a FL resident when the Lightning started and later played against Manon, who played forward in men's league, in So Cal, in early 2000's. Great video!
I vividly remember hearing about her playing in the OHL, seeing highlights of her in an NHL exhibition game - and watching her as Canada's goalie at the 98 Nagano Olympics. Congratulations Manon Rhéaume for inspiring a generation of women with your strength, courage and wonderful legacy. Fantastic video!
Great piece! She will be remembered as a true trailblazer and rightly so. I'm so happy that women are finally able to able to experience this amazing game for themselves and its thanks (in part) to people like Manon. I ref in a women's league, and I see the smiles on everyone's face after each game. For many of them, playing hockey is nothing short of life changing.
@JSnipes-nb7uy What I mean is that when my girlfriend was growing up, there were no teams for her to join. Boys her age played, but there was no provision for girls to learn and play hockey. It wasn't that long ago. This piece about Manon says she was the only girl on a boys' team. It's recent history. It's the same in many sports, not just hockey.
Well done feature. I'm working on "The History of Ice Hockey in Reno, NV" - can't wait to interview Manon myself and talk about her brief stint with the Renegades. GKG!
One thing that no one knows is that she Played for the Las Vegas Thunder….Yes Las Vegas Had a Hockey Team before The Golden Knights and whats So Cool is that I have her Goalie Card when she was here as a Las Vegas Thunder
True story. My buddy had a crush on her years ago when she 1st became known. I tried to get a hold of her on the phone for him. I got a hold of her mom in her home town in Quebec. I said I was a reporter wanting to do a story on her. I was on the phone with her mother but she didn't speak much English at all so her brother got on the phone and spoke much better English. They were both very nice. He gave us the number of the arena she was at for practice. I don't remember what team she was on all I remember is it was somewhere in Georgia. I was able to get her on the phone and from there my buddy chatted with her for a few minutes saying he was a reporter and wanted to do a story about her. She said she didn't have time to talk right then but to call her back later at the arena. We left it at that and didn't bother her again
She played for the Atlanta Knights of the now-defunct IHL. Also, that brother to whom you spoke may or may not have been Pascal, who played 318 games over nine years in the NHL and won the Cup with the Devils in 2003. They were teammates with Trois-Rivières of the QMJHL in 1991-1992.
I was fortunate enough to be working in radio (970-WFLA) in Tampa when the Lightning were just getting started. I saw Manon make her Lightning debut and was proud to have been there.
I played goalie as a kid on the ponds, creeks and rinks and into adulthood and loved to play that position. Goalies are my heroes and Manon is right up there with my goalie heros! Thank you Manon for being you and being a great role model!
Reminds me of the "Ice the Fire" charity game that she played in (with Cammi Granato, Michael Ontkean, Jerry "Killer" Houser and another female goalie I can't remember. Erin?). I was so mad that Manon was a Duck! (as was Charlie Simmer with Dave Taylor playing against him!) I think Kelly Hrudey left his crease and scored on her, thus earning himself a pummeling by the Hanson Brothers. My memory of that is too hazy to know whether any of that actually happened the way I remember it, but I know there was a lot of fun and silliness that night.
Growing up in the GTA during the 70s and 80s when the GTHL was the MTHL with the SHA,never knew this ,never even heard of her,man thought I knew all the milestones ,good story
I remember her playing pickup hockey in Las Vegas at the Santa Fe arena as a skater not a goalie she was a great skater during the time she played for the LV Thunder .
Atta girl !!!😅😅. Proud of u for leading the way for other girls.Dream large, work a bit harder than others and the girls will succeed. Regards from me in Windsor,Ontario.
Good video, but it kind of invites he impression that no women played hockey back then, which was absolutely not true. In the 70s my little town of 3,500 in New Hampshire had its own girls team, the state university in my state had a women's team, and all the Ivy League schools had women's teams. I have a hard time believing no women were playing hockey four hours north of us.
Phil Esposito is a stand up guy -- one of the best Celebs I've ever met. If HE says Manon was good enough - SHE WAS ! I liked her because she's attractive !
FYI, in spite of what the narrator said about women playing hockey being a rare thing .. there have been women's hockey teams in Canada going back more than 120 years. Also, the Q is a minor league and not just under the NHL.
Qmjhl is NOT 1 step bellow the nhl.....only a very few ever make the step directly to the nhl from major jr. For most, there are 2 or 3 stops before going to the show.
What do you mean? People go from the OHL to NHL all the time. Around here it usually goes AAA, jr. B, jr. A, NHL. Sometimes they might get drafted then go play in the AHL or now the NCAA is a bigger thing but I dont really understand you.
woman can do anything men can do...just shouldn't do it together. not in the army and not in sports. esposito even said it himself "...(first year in tampa bay, innaugural season)...my brain started clicking...cbs was there, abc was therre..." loll...the perfect publicity stunt at the perfect time. and esposito saw the dollar bills clicking in his mind. for himself...then the team, then the nhl, and then, Rheahume. the only reason she was there in tampa was for the publivity and $ generated from it. that's it. talent wise, there are a few dozen male goalies worldwide with the same talent level as her, if not more. the only reason she was there is cuz she was a massive $ making publicity stunt for tampa and the NHL.
Phil and the Tampa organization did this purely for publicity. There is no way she deserved a spot more than the thousands competing with her but sometimes you need a ploy to make it to the next level.
What if the team failed to get a following and folded without her... then thousands that did get a shot owe it to her. She also helped to launch women's hockey which has been a huge benefit to girls all over North America. Maybe don't always take the Fox News angle and try to see the bigger picture.
She led the way for women’s hockey. For that she deserves a place in the NHL Hall of Fame.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bahahaha no she doesn't, she did nothing and was nothing more than a fad to get people to come check out a team.
